Wade, feminism, and the struggle for homosexual rights as evidence of cultural decay and as a challenge to religious orthodoxy. Social liberals viewed Carter’s faith with skepticism and took issue with his seeming unwillingness to build on recent progressive victories. Ultimately, Flippen argues, conservative Christians emerged as the Religious Right and were adopted into the Republican fold.
Examining Carter’s struggle to placate competing interests against the backdrop of difficult foreign and domestic issues―a struggling economy, the stalled Strategic Arms Limitation Talks, disputes in the Middle East, handover of the Panama Canal, and the Iranian hostage crisis―Flippen shows how a political dynamic was formed that continues to this day.

We Can't Have It Both Ways

Carter was judged unfairly in office. Critics could not have accurately predicted how influential this administration would become in mapping out the course of the American political landscape for subsequent generations. It's one heck of influence in my book.
While professing his Southern Baptist faith out on the campaign trail, Carter did (mildly) support the then-active Equal Rights Amendment ratification effort in states.
And he would appoint Sarah Weddington, the lawyer who won the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court case legalizing abortion, to his White House administration. Weddington would be in charge of initiatives to and with women's rights groups, then a growing constituency within the Democratic Party.
These two moves did not impress the evangelical vote, who must have felt that their support was now being taken for granted. Carter no longer exactly appeared as one of them.
But what is even more significant is that he had gone around assuming that he could effectively court conservative evangelicals and their more liberal religious/non-religious counterparts. Realizing there were two separate and distinct types of voters, Carter's actions subconsciously forecast modern America's political groupings.
The book is good for people interested in presidents and/or political strategizing. People interested in the Carter administration should also pick it up.

Carter as Catalyst for the Religious Right

This book explores the inner workings and the significance of the presidency of Jimmy Carter (1977-1981). Flippen observes that President Carter took for granted that he could retain the loyalty of fellow religious conservatives, while courting support from the left by giving his blessing to initiatives related to the growth of feminism, the legalization of abortion, and equal rights for homosexuals. All along, such issues, each one bearing a religious dimension, were becoming more partisan with each side becoming more entrenched. Consequently, Flippen argues, the Carter Administration served as a catalyst for the rise of the Religious Right.
