Great read so far
By Paul links
Great read so far. Living in Roswell I am most familiar with the areas from Island Ford to Johnsons Ferry. I know the routes, I know the sandbars and the shallows. What I never knew was the history of the trip. I'm planning to do some longer trips with my son and this book is great for picking day or weekend trips.

Eugene Bullard, Black Expatriate in Jazz-Age Paris, by Craig Lloyd

Although he was the first African American fighter pilot, Eugene J. Bullard is still a relative stranger in his homeland. An accomplished professional boxer, musician, club manager, and impresario of Parisian nightlife between the world wars, Bullard found in Europe a degree of respect and freedom unknown to blacks in America. There, for twenty-five years, he helped define the expatriate experience for countless other African American artists, writers, performers, and athletes.

This is the first biography of Bullard in thirty years and the most complete ever. It follows Bullard's lifelong search for respect from his poor boyhood in Jim-Crow Georgia to his attainment of notoriety in Jazz-Age Paris and his exploits fighting for his adopted country, for which he was awarded the Croix de Guerre. Drawing on a vast amount of archival material in the United States, Great Britain, and France, Craig Lloyd unfolds the vibrant story of an African American who sought freedom overseas. Lloyd provides a new look at the black expatriate community in Paris, taking readers into the cabarets where Bullard rubbed elbows with Josephine Baker, Louis Armstrong, and even the Prince of Wales. Lloyd also uses Bullard's life as a lens through which to view the racism that continued to dog him even in Europe in his encounters with traveling Americans.

When Hitler conquered France, Bullard was wounded in action and then escaped to America. There, his European successes counted for little: he spent his last years in obscurity and hardship but continued to work for racial justice. Eugene Bullard, Black Expatriate in Jazz-Age Paris offers a fascinating look at an extraordinary man who lived on his own terms and adds a new facet to our understanding of the black diaspora.

From Library Journal
Lloyd (history, Columbus State Univ.) explores the extraordinary life of Eugene Bullard (1895-1961), the first black wartime aviator and celebrated prize fighter, musician, and decorated member of the French foreign legion and the French airforce in World War I. Beginning with his birth in Georgia, the author charts Bullard's boyhood, his flight from home, and his emigration to Scotland and then to Paris as a stowaway in 1912. There, in the city's tolerant racial climate, Bullard soaked up the cabaret scene and mingled with jazz stars Sidney Bechet and Josephine Baker. Lloyd continues with Bullard's role in the French fight against Nazism during World War II and his flight to New York in 1940, where he battled racism until his death and was awarded the Croix de Guerre. Providing excellent background material, especially about Paris after World War I, Lloyd adds substantially to Bullard's unpublished memoirs and the thinly researched first biography of Bullard by P.J. Carisella and James W. Ryan, The Black Swallow of Death (1972. o.p.). He provides a solid monograph for scholars that will serve as the definitive biography of a remarkable man in search of freedom.DDave Szatmary, Univ. of Washington, Seattle

From Booklist
Lloyd, a history professor, takes the life of an exceptional individual and explores his universe, one with which we are generally familiar as Americans, from an unusual perspective. At the end of the nineteenth century, Bullard escaped the Jim Crow practices of his native Georgia and stowed away in a ship bound for Germany. He reinvented himself in Europe, becoming a prize fighter, dance-troupe entertainer, and jazz band drummer as he traveled between Berlin, Paris, and Moscow. He settled in France, adopting its culture and fighting on its behalf in World War I, even earning citizenship with his heroism as a fighter pilot. But the presence and prejudice of white American soldiers when the U.S. entered the war provided Bullard with painful reminders of the racism he left behind him. Still, Bullard prevailed, becoming a popular Jazz Age entertainer and working for the French Resistance during World War II. Though he died in relative obscurity in the U.S., Bullard is celebrated among the French, who accepted him as one of their own. Vernon Ford

Review

[An] unbelievable, Zelig-like tale . . . What makes it magical is the shear force of hope . . . in the face of hopelessness.

(Athens Banner Herald)

There are plenty of reasons to read [Eugene Bullard]: not merely the rich details of Bullard's life, not merely the careful and thorough way in which Lloyd has researched and told his story, but also the things that story tells us about race, racism, and human courage.

(Washington Post Book World)

Explores the extraordinary life of . . . the first black wartime aviator and celebrated prize fighter, musician, and decorated member of the French foreign legion and the French airforce in World War I. . . . The definitive biography of a remarkable man in search of freedom.

Important story
By Charles Croft
This is an important story that needs to be more widely told. The writing style is thick and seems more carefully academic than it needs to be. It might be a better fictional novel in order to get the important points across with regard to the continuing racism of the US and how it even pervaded France from US tourists through the racism encountered when he returned to the US. Regardless, it is an incredible story worth reading and I highly recommend it. I also recommend reading Queen Bess about the first black female pilot, Bessie Coleman.

A forgotten hero not deserving to be forgotten!
By Simon
A very well documented biography on a genuine American and French hero. Unfortunately he was born during the Jim Crow era in the south (even though the constitution which was written over 100 years before his birth mentions "all men are created equal", this did not include any non-caucasian's or women, did it? Did not use the word minority since it denotes less than some majority, there are more non-caucasian's in the world anyway and what is really meant by that word is just that, non-caucasian. I find it odd that the USA was founded by European descendants like the English, French and even though the country prided itself on it's progresive nature, it did not include equality, even though Europe itself did not practice racial discrimination). He was born the seventh child of a large family and his father always had a premonition of a very distinguished future for him and let it be known to him when he was young. Talks about his travel through the south after he left home and was told early by his father of a country (France) where all men are truly free. This had a profound effect on him because he eventually made it to France via England first.
He began his livelyhood as a theatre performer and boxer; two opposing and similar avocations. He joined the military and became the first Black American and Black Frenchman aviator and was awarded medals for his bravery, dedication and skills. Very well liked, he had a contagious personality and started working at a famous Paris club later in life and eventually became a club owner himself. He met the famous of the day like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Langston Hughes, Bricktop and many others. This biography also got me interested in Jazz age Paris to request both autobiographies of Hughes and Bricktop.
Slowly (too slowly) more is being known about this man and his acomplishments and contributions to the human race.
You won't be able to put it down. Jack Johnson's autobiography "In the Ring and Out" is another good bio of that era too.

Bullard's definitive biography
By A Customer
Eugene Bullard was an African American man who was born in 1895 in Columbus, Georgia, and lived a really fascinating live. After leaving the U.S. in 1912 to escape the existing suffocating racist oppression, he stayed first in Britain, and then settled in France where he lived as a boxer, entertainer, jazz drummer, was a war hero in the trenches in Verdun, and become the first African American combat pilot in 1917 (in French service: the U.S. would allow black combat pilots only in 1941...). After the war, like so many other African Americans, he remained in Europe. He become a well known entrepeneur in the Parisian night club life during the 20s and 30s. At the German invasion in 1940, and after a brief stint in the French army, he went back to the U.S. where he died in New York in 1961. Revered in France as a national hero during is life, and completely unknown in his country until more than twenty years after his death, the life of this extraordinary man has in this book a much deserved homage and, probably, its definitive biography.

Craig Claiborne's Southern Cooking, by Craig Claiborne

Craig Claiborne, world traveler, iconic New York Times food writer, and author of more than twenty cookbooks, was always a southerner at heart. This is the only one of Claiborne’s cookbooks to focus exclusively on the South. It was, he readily admitted, his most personal book.

As John T. Edge and Georgeanna Milam note in their foreword, Claiborne, a native of the Mississippi Delta, had a love of southern food that ran deep and wide, spanning Cajun, Creole, Tex-Mex, and other regional cuisines. Included are more than three hundred favorite recipes―from Claiborne’s own kitchen, from his mother’s Mississippi boardinghouse, and from some of the South’s best cooks, including Bill Neal, Edna Lewis, and Paul Prudhomme. He introduces many of the dishes with comments and notes on their history, their evolution over the years, and his favorite versions; he also includes instructions on preparation and serving. Throughout, Claiborne remembers the many southern classics of his childhood, such as fried catfish and beaten biscuits and Smithfield ham.

“Nothing rekindles my spirits, gives comfort to my heart and mind, more than a visit to Mississippi and environs,” wrote Claiborne, “and [to] be regaled, as I often have been, with a platter of fried chicken, field peas, collard greens, fresh corn on the cob, sliced tomatoes with French dressing (that’s what we call vinaigrette sauce), and to top it all off with a wedge of freshly baked pecan pie.”

From Library Journal
Southern cooking is the "vastest and most varied of all traditional and regional cooking in this country," Claiborne states. Soul food, Creole, Cajun, Tex-Mex, and barbecue are delicious subdivisions. Claiborne has written close to 20 cookbooks, and the clarity of his recipes and the acumen of his mind and tastebuds is unquestionable. Cheese-straws, Cajun popcorn, Jeff Davis pie, North Carolina chopped barbecue sandwich, it's all mouthwatering. Major recipes are presented in several versions. This is a fine selection, arranged by course, from a region which is the subject of scores of specialty recipe collections. Highly recommended. SP

Review

Claiborne admires a good story and a good meal. And his mostly nostalgic, comforting view of southern food is as it should be. Instead of creating stir-fries of collards or fried chicken calzones he sticks to the basics. . . . Mr. Claiborne's collection is one the Southern-starved cook will reach for-recipes that stand the test of time.

(Florence Fabricant New York Times)

Craig Claiborne was the most important of all food giants.

(Jacques Pepin)

Craig Claiborne's perspicacity as a journalist and a tastemaker were matched only by his generosity of spirit. A man who seemed perpetually on the go, he always made time to mentor younger colleagues like me―and I am immeasurably richer for it.

(Bryan Miller author of New York Times Guide to Restaurants in New York City)

Secure in his cooking skill and native Southernness, Claiborne also concocts Southern-style food, like catfish fillets in white-wine sauce. From the traditional to the original, these lucid, flavorful recipes will be welcomed by Claiborne's substantial following and by fans of regional American cooking.

(Publishers Weekly)

Craig recognized some of the wonderful regional foods and cooks coming from the South and brought them into the limelight, which nobody else had done.

(Florence Fabricant)

He is at once the great sensualist about food, fussing over its taste, texture, aroma and appearance . . . and a great democrat, ensuring that however complicated the cuisine that arrives on the table, the directions that put it there are always easy to follow.

(Metropolitan Home)

He made food respectable

(Julia Child)

Anyone who is even slightly serious about what goes into his mouth owes a boundless debt to Craig Claiborne for his passionate celebration of fine dining.

(Gael Greene)

Twice-Told Tales presents the life and writings of Dante Alighieri's maestro, the Florentine notary and diplomat, Brunetto Latino. The book first discusses archival documents found in Florence, the Vatican Secret Archives, Genoa, England and elsewhere, which were written by or which name Brunetto Latino. The documents concern, among other topics, the Vallombrosan Abbot Tesauro, the Sicilian Vespers' plotting, and the death by starvation of Ugolino. The book then discusses Brunetto's translations of Aristotle's Ethics and Cicero's De inventione, as texts presented to Charles of Anjou and others, as well as the influence of these texts on Dante. Appendices present the archival documents discussed in the book and list manuscripts containing Latino's writings.

The Romantic Manifesto: An Anthology (American University Studies), by Larry H. Peer

The vexed question of what the Romantics themselves said about Romanticism has been approached in a number of different ways, but their major public declarations have never been gathered together. Indeed, with the exception of a few of these (such as Stendhal's Racine et Shakespeare), this body of evidence has been unavailable to the English-speaking audience. Many of these manifestos are translated here for the first time: the remaining are newly translated for this collection. Taken together, they show Romanticism as a coherent and unified movement appearing in pulses throughout Eastern and Western Europe in the early nineteenth century, with a continual spiritual kinship to Schlegelian origins.

Zero to Three (The Cave Canem Poetry Prize Ser.), by F. Douglas Brown

What started out as a way to address dealing with parenting and, in particular, fatherhood, became a series of poems focused on familial roles and situations that are difficult to articulate, even among family members. The poems in Zero to Three mark both the change in the child and in the father, who is also a son himself. The term “zero to three” derives from the developmental period that many clinicians and pediatricians believe is the most fundamental phase for children whose delicate brains are undergoing drastic and formative change. Research also shows that parents undergo formative change alongside their children during this period from conception to toddler age. These poems do not intend to offer a definitive stance on parenting or fatherhood but, rather, to capture an emotional gestational period that extends beyond the womb and exceeds beyond the grave. They celebrate pop culture and family, as well as lament the anguish and frustration of a parent losing his temper or a parent losing a parent. Ultimately, these poems attempt to sing and dance in the fact that parenting is a wonderful mystery to witness and experience.

Review

These poems lead us from the birth cry in a hospital delivery room, to
dusk and revelry in Spain, to modern-day Florida and history-laden
Mississippi where Trayvon Martin and Emmett Till were slain. Even when
what Brown has set out to do is grieve loss, his lines move with a
buoyant, marrow-deep music, percussive and rich. They move like ‘a
train, bound to a destination’ and they arrive with ‘the crackle
lightning makes when it hits.'

(Tracy K. Smith author of Life on Mars, winner of 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry)

F. Douglas Brown writes on behalf of the families we make and the families that make us. Poets like Robert Hayden and Elizabeth Bishop join lovers and kin in shaping his magnanimous craftsmanship and compassion. The late poet Stanley Kunitz once said he wrote about his life in order to amplify it. Likewise, this engrossing debut makes our world more vivid, transformative, and transcendent. Zero to Three is simply a triumph.? (Terrance Hayes National Book Award Winner, Lighthead)

From the hectic blur of family dynamics amidst raising young children, F. Douglas Brown’s Zero to Three reminds us there is much to learn about what shapes parents into better people. (Samantha Duncan The Rumpus)

A beautiful collection
By EJR reader
At once heartfelt and thought provoking, I read and re-read this collection several times. There was an almost narrative quality to the collection, as the author wove a takes you first through the experience of fatherhood, which slowly suffuses and alters his understanding of his familial role, from father to husband, to brother to so. By the end, he's woven a rich tapestry of interconnectedness, mapped the sometimes joyful, sometimes painful relationships that bind us to one another. Compelling, beautiful writing.

Katharine and R. J. Reynolds: Partners of Fortune in the Making of the New South, by Michele Gillespie

Separately they were formidable―together they were unstoppable. Despite their intriguing lives and the deep impact they had on their community and region, the story of Richard Joshua Reynolds (1850–1918) and Katharine Smith Reynolds (1880–1924) has never been fully told. Now Michele Gillespie provides a sweeping account of how R. J. and Katharine succeeded in realizing their American dreams.

From relatively modest beginnings, R. J. launched the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, which would eventually develop two hugely profitable products, Prince Albert pipe tobacco and Camel cigarettes. His marriage in 1905 to Katharine Smith, a dynamic woman thirty years his junior, marked the beginning of a unique partnership that went well beyond the family. As a couple, the Reynoldses conducted a far-ranging social life and, under Katharine’s direction, built Reynolda House, a breathtaking estate and model farm. Providing leadership to a series of progressive reform movements and business innovations, they helped drive one of the South’s best examples of rapid urbanization and changing race relations in the city of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Together they became one of the New South’s most influential elite couples. Upon R. J.’s death, Katharine reinvented herself, marrying a World War I veteran many years her junior and engaging in a significant new set of philanthropic pursuits.

Katharine and R. J. Reynolds reveals the broad economic, social, cultural, and political changes that were the backdrop to the Reynoldses’ lives. Portraying a New South shaped by tensions between rural poverty and industrial transformation, white working-class inferiority and deeply entrenched racism, and the solidification of a one-party political system, Gillespie offers a masterful life-and-times biography of these important North Carolinians.

Review
Michele Gillespie’s sophisticated examination of the intertwined lives of Katharine and R. J. Reynolds represents an exceptional contribution to the historiography of the modern South. At once a penetrating portrait of a marriage and an acute analysis of the many ways in which the lives of the partners shed light on business and social history, Gillespie’s book provides readers with dazzling new insights regarding the dynamics of power in the rapidly modernizing region the Reynoldses called home. (Peter A. Coclanis, Albert R. Newsome Distinguished Professor of History, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill)

Deeply researched, beautifully written, and cogently argued, this is an engrossing study of a power couple extraordinaire, R. J. and Kate Reynolds, which will appeal to a wide readership. Telling us much about an unusual relationship, Michele Gillespie also provides a new way to understand how the post-Reconstruction New South elite helped construct business structures, social relations, and racial hierarchies. The result is an important addition to our understanding of the industrial South in the North Carolina Piedmont heartland.

(William A. Link author of The Paradox of Southern Progressivism, 1880-1930)

This innovative, beautifully written dual biography is carefully contextualized in the history and historiography of its region and era, and as a result it makes a significant scholarly contribution to several fields of history not always recognized as being related.

(John B. Boles William P. Hobby Professor of History, Rice University)

[T]he range and depth of Gillespie’s work coupled with clarity of her writing combine to create a read that will be welcomed by students of history ― both amateur and academic ― who want an interview view of the world occupied by the founder of the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company and Mary Katharine Smith.

(Tim Revis Northeast Georgia Living)

Gillespie . . . masterfully builds a contextual framework around which to construct and present complementary biographies of two compelling individuals. The result is engaging and thought-provoking narrative history, which is also informative about the social, economic, and political issues of the time and region.

(B. M. Banta Choice)

Ms. Gillespie uses Katharine's life and work as a kind of prism through which to view the prejudices and predilections of Southern culture in the 1910s and 1920s. The author . . . also offers an impressively researched essay on the emergence of the post-bellum Southern economy. . . . Ms. Gillespie has . . . produced a rich and original history of misunderstood period, one drawn almost entirely from primary sources.

(Barton Swaim Wall Street Journal)

Michele Gillespie provides a sweeping account of how R. J. and Katharine succeeded in realizing their American dreams. . . . Deeply researched, beautifully written, and cogently argued, this is an engrossing study of a power couple extraordinaire.

(Bob Edmonds McCormick Messenger)

In this examination of Katharine and Richard Joshua Reynolds, Michele Gillespie achieves a rare feat: turning a dual biography into a tour de force. . . . Gillespie has produced a top-notch study of a powerful couple negotiating the shifting socioeconomic world of the New South and early corporate America.

(Bruce Eelman Journal of American History)

Carefully researched and elegantly written, this thoughtful and engaging dual biography of Katharine and R. J. Reynolds is a story that needed to be told. . . . A sophisticated study that will appeal to a broad range of readers within and beyond the academy, Gillespie’s work pivots on her keen insights about the dynamics of power in a political culture built on intricate hierarchies of race, class, and gender. (Mary E. Frederickson American Historical Review)

In this well-researched joint biography of entrepreneur Richard Joshua Reynolds (RJR) and businesswoman Katharine Smith Reynolds, Michele Gillespie traces the rise of a husband and wife from the ranks of the middling sort to positions of great wealth and power. . . . The author takes care to situate the couple in the economic, political, and social currents of their time, and Gillespie's diligence in this regard informs readers about southern history and conveys appreciation for the lives of the couple. (Julia Kirk Blackwelder Journal of Southern History)

An Insider's Perspective
By Marshall Marvelli
For anyone interested in the South, modern Southern culture, feminism and racism in the new (post Civil War) South, the history of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the impact of industrialism on the early twentieth century South, this book is a must read. Before this reviewer proceeds, he must make two disclaimers: first, I am an RJR man having worked for the company nearly 20 years of my professional life; second, I know Dr. Gillespie personally and have an inordinate (unrestrained) respect for her research, teaching and writing having been a recipient of the fruits thereof. So, I admit a bias; but,I feel that my opinion is sufficiently buttressed by the limpid quality of the written expression and thoroughness of the research that created this book. It's an enjoyable read. The characters come alive on the pages. Their hopes and dreams, both dashed and realized, are presented for all the see. For a Winstonian, the names and places of our community come alive with a history that few of us know. For the student of the new South, the partnership of Katharine and Richard, a pair of equals according to RJR, seeks to achieve a a company and community that would not have existed without these two remarkable people. In Dr. Gillespies's newest book, Winston-Salem becomes a microcosm for a South that has come of age in the past 40 years. Michele Gillespie's book helps to make sense of this brave new world in which we live and for which we have so much hope. Good reading to one and all. Buy the book![ASIN:0820332267 Katharine and R. Reynolds
By jay reynolds
The book is well written, however, it has the feel of a text book and it is not difficult to speculate that it will be required reading for a history class or college level class discussing the timing and cultural significance of the era.

Southern Manhood: Perspectives on Masculinity in the Old SouthFrom Brand: University of Georgia Press

Spanning the era from the American Revolution to the Civil War, these nine pathbreaking original essays explore the unexpected, competing, or contradictory ways in which southerners made sense of manhood. Employing a rich variety of methodologies, the contributors look at southern masculinity within African American, white, and Native American communities; on the frontier and in towns; and across boundaries of class and age.

Until now, the emerging subdiscipline of southern masculinity studies has been informed mainly by conclusions drawn from research on how the planter class engaged issues of honor, mastery, and patriarchy. But what about men who didn’t own slaves or were themselves enslaved? These essays illuminate the mechanisms through which such men negotiated with overarching conceptions of masculine power. Here the reader encounters Choctaw elites struggling to maintain manly status in the market economy, black and white artisans forging rival communities and competing against the gentry for social recognition, slave men on the southern frontier balancing community expectations against owner domination, and men in a variety of military settings acting out community expectations to secure manly status.

As Southern Manhood brings definition to an emerging subdiscipline of southern history, it also pushes the broader field in new directions. All of the essayists take up large themes in antebellum history, including southern womanhood, the advent of consumer culture and market relations, and the emergence of sectional conflict.

Review

An important and timely contribution to the burgeoning field of gender history. This rich and compelling collection will take its place on the bookshelves of every serious scholar of gender in the American experience.

(Anya Jabour author of Marriage in the Early Republic: Elizabeth and William Wirt and the Companionate Ideal)

The essays in Southern Manhood are joined by an attention to race and evolving market forces. What emerges from this are often subtle arguments attuned to southern men's overlapping concerns with class and racial identity as they negotiated their position as men within local societies.

(Matthew Basso editor of Across the Great Divide: Cultures of Manhood in the American West)

A fine collection of essays that apply the new methods and approaches of masculine studies to the study of the Old South. . . . Southern Manhood: Perspectives on Masculinity in the Old South is a pioneering effort opening new ground in both the study of masculine history and the history of the American South.

(North Carolina Historical Review)

All the essays in this collection are insightful, original, well written, well researched, and well worth reading.

(Civil War History)

The insights that this study yields are tremendously useful and provide valuable building blocks for more in-depth epistemologies on region - including the South - in critical masculinities.

(Men and Masculinities)

This fine collection of essays provides an important corrective to what has been a generally narrow discussion of masculinity in the antebellum South.

(Journal of American History)

Southern Manhood is a marvelous addition to our understanding of textured manhood.

(Florida Historical Quarterly)

southern manhood during one century
By Jeffery Mingo
The editors stated that analyses of Southern masculinity have focused on upper-class, white men and their honor system. This book tries to break that mode by discussing working-class white men, Choctaw men, and African-American men. Usually, cultural critics and literary critics embrace gender studies, rather than historians. Here, however, historians juggle this ball with positive results. This book cover topics like literacy, slave escapes, humor, unions, military schools, inter alia. The authors are male and female, despite this being a men's studies text.

The book strictly covers the post-revolution and pre-Emancipation era. Those looking for a talk on modern Souther masculinity must turn elsewhere. This book does represent the entire South, rather than focusing on one state and assuming that it was representative of all of them.

The book states interesting things about Southern, white men. Not only did Southern men purposely differentiate themselves from their Northern counterparts, they also strictly saw themselves as not European. The changing economics of the South is also analyzed, noting how it changed concepts of manhood accordingly.

The book is not flawless. The first chapter, "Refuge of Manhood," details how Southern voluntary soldiers distanced themselves from women and African Americans and demanded guns and uniforms. However, these two concepts are never really brought together. The chapter ends up just being a laundry list. In "Fraternity and Masculinity," the author attempts to compare white artisans to black ones. However, she focuses much more on whites than blacks and never once explains why or bothers to note this as a problem.

The best chapter is "The Absent Subject: African American Masculinity and Forced Migration." In it, the author says that whites and Northern blacks looked at slaves as fools and eunuchs for not running away or committing suicide. Here, Edward Baptist gives precise details how male slaves often created their sense of manhood by caring for women and children or doing shoddy work on the plantation. They also embraced Christianity, hoping the afterlife would be the promised paradise the Bible suggests. As a black person whose grandparents did not leave the South until the tail end of the Great Migration, I was blown away by this piece. Big applause for Edward E. Baptist.

Sometimes the chapters felt like they were all details and little analysis. The chapters are quite short but are well-written. Readers will applaud the contributors because surely this dated information would be hard for any person, even academics, to find.

Uneven Development: Nature, Capital, and the Production of Space, by Neil Smith

In Uneven Development, a classic in its field, Neil Smith offers the first full theory of uneven geographical development, entwining theories of space and nature with a critique of capitalist development. Featuring pathbreaking analyses of the production of nature and the politics of scale, Smith's work anticipated many of the uneven contours that now mark neoliberal globalization. This third edition features an afterword updating the analysis for the present day.

Review

Smith provides a brilliant formulation of how the production of a particular kind of nature and space under historical capitalism is essential to the unequal development of a landscape that integrates poverty with wealth, industrial urbanization with agricultural diminishment.

(Edward Said)

Smith attempts no less than the integration of nature and space in the Marxian theory of capitalist development. The aim is to link two radical traditions―geographical and political―by theoretically illuminating the reality of uneven development. . . . Smith raises the level of the debate on the fundamental question by taking a definite stance. He improves the clarity even of the arguments made in disagreement with him. His book should be widely read, used, and discussed.

(Environment and Planning)

This book is a classic. It deals with fundamental issues that simply do not go away, and demonstrates the enduring relevance of Marxist political economy.

(Noel Castree coauthor of Spaces of Work)

Uneven Development is one of the most important books of specifically geographical social theory to be written in the English language in the last 30 years. As rapid environmental change and attendant political divisions and struggles return to the fore (propelled in no small part by global climate change), this remains one of the few places to turn in social theory for a rigorous and insightful explanation.

(W. Scott Prudham author of Knock on Wood: Nature as Commodity in Douglas-Fir Country)

About the Author
Neil Smith is Distinguished Professor of Anthropology and Geography at the City University of New York and serves as director for the Center for Place, Culture, and Politics. He is author or editor of nine books that explore the broad intersection between space, nature, social theory, and history and is co-organizer of the International Critical Geography Group.

Excellent
By David
Although I am not extremely well versed in Geography, this book is an excellent work about space and creation of uneven development in capitalism. The first two chapters are especially interesting, and deal with the general understanding of space on a philosophical level. The comparison between earlier views, such as relative space, against Newton's absolute space. As far as I understand it relative space saw space as a relation between specific matter or objects. Absolute space is the way we see space now in common parlance, signifying space as a large capsule where things are contained within. After reading this book, I seemed to have come to the conclusion that capitalism has aspects of both philosophies in practice.
Neil Smith also distinguishes between various theories of nature, how society has come to see nature as external to man. He ties this in later with Marx's theories on spatial relations and 'production of nature'. Good companion to David Harvey's Urban Experience or Condition of Postmodernism, who incorporates Marx's theories in application to space.
Slightly difficult, and abstract, but well worth the effort.

great development
By Georgina Calderón Aragón
I think that it is a great book, for all those geographers or of other diciplines interested in the space aspects, the ones that are in this book in a very good fundamental argument about the development of the term space production and the factors that influence in the unequal production in a capitalist system
