Extending the chronological scope of previous studies of race, work, and unionization in the Birmingham coalfields, Woodrum covers the New Deal, World War II, the postwar era, the 1970s expansion of coalfield employment, and contemporary trends toward globalization.

The United Mine Workers of America's efforts to bridge the color line in places like Birmingham should not be underestimated, says Woodrum. Facing pressure from the wider world of segregationist Alabama, however, union leadership ultimately backed off the UMWA's historic commitment to the rights of its black members. Woodrum discusses the role of state UMWA president William Mitch in this process and describes Birmingham's unique economic circumstances as an essentially Rust Belt city within the burgeoning Sun Belt South. This is a nuanced exploration of how, despite their central role in bringing the UMWA back to Alabama in the early 1930s, black miners remained vulnerable to the economic and technological changes that transformed the coal industry after World War II.

Mary Turner and the Memory of Lynching traces the reaction of activists, artists, writers, and local residents to the brutal lynching of a pregnant woman near Valdosta, Georgia. In 1918, the murder of a white farmer led to a week of mob violence that claimed the lives of at least eleven African Americans, including Hayes Turner. When his wife Mary vowed to press charges against the killers, she too fell victim to the mob.

Mary’s lynching was particularly brutal and involved the grisly death of her eight-month-old fetus. It led to both an entrenched local silence and a widespread national response in newspaper and magazine accounts, visual art, film, literature, and public memorials. Turner’s story became a centerpiece of the Anti-Lynching Crusaders campaign for the 1922 Dyer Bill, which sought to make lynching a federal crime. Julie Buckner Armstrong explores the complex and contradictory ways this horrific event was remembered in works such as Walter White’s report in the NAACP’s newspaper the Crisis, the “Kabnis” section of Jean Toomer’s Cane, Angelina Weld Grimké’s short story “Goldie,” and Meta Fuller’s sculpture Mary Turner: A Silent Protest against Mob Violence.

Like those of Emmett Till and Leo Frank, Turner’s story continues to resonate on multiple levels. Armstrong’s work provides insight into the different roles black women played in the history of lynching: as victims, as loved ones left behind, and as those who fought back. In exploring this remark, Abigail Cheever examines the ways in which social influence was thought to deform individuals in midcentury American culture. How could a person both be and not be herself at the same time? The answer lies in the period’s complicated attitude toward social influence. If being real means that one’s performative self is in line with one’s authentic self, to be a real phony is to lack an authentic self as a point of reference―to lack a self that is independent of the social world. According to Cheever, Holly Golightly “is like a phony in that her beliefs are perfectly in accordance with social norms, but she is real insofar as those beliefs are all she has.”

Real Phonies examines the twinned phenomena of phoniness and authenticity across the second half of the twentieth century―beginning with adolescents in the 1950s, like Holly Golightly and Holden Caulfield, and ending with mid-career professionals in the 1990s, like sports agent Jerry Maguire. Countering the critical assumption that, with the emergence of postmodernity, the ideal of “authentic self” disappeared, Cheever argues that concern with the authenticity of persons proliferated throughout the past half-century despite a significant ambiguity over what that self might look like.

Cheever’s analysis is structured around five key kinds of characters: adolescents, the insane, serial killers, and the figures of the assimilated Jew and the “company man.” In particular, she finds a preoccupation in these works not so much with faked conformity but with the frightening notion of real uniformity―the notion that Holly, and others like her, could each genuinely be the same as everyone else.

The epithet "phony" was omnipresent during the postwar period in the United States. It was an easy appellation for individuals who appeared cynically to conform to codes of behavior for social approbation or advancement. Yet Holly Golightly "isn't a phony because she's a real phony," says her agent in Breakfast at Tiffany's. In exploring this remark, Abigail Cheever examines the ways in which social influence was thought to deform individuals in midcentury American culture. How could a person both be and not be herself at the same time? The answer lies in the period's complicated attitude toward social influence. If being real means that one's performative self is in line with one's authentic self, to be a real phony is to lack an authentic self as a point of reference--to lack a self that is independent of the social world. According to Cheever, Holly Golightly "is like a phony in that her beliefs are perfectly in accordance with social norms, but she is real insofar as those beliefs are all she has."

Real Phonies begins in the postwar period to examine the twinned phenomena of phoniness and authenticity across the second half of the twentieth century--from adolescents like Holly Golightly and Holden Caulfield to sports agents like Jerry Maguire. Countering the critical assumption that, with the emergence of postmodernity, the ideal of "authentic self" disappeared, Cheever argues that concern with the authenticity of persons proliferated throughout the past half-century despite a significant ambiguity over what that self might look like.

Real Phonies

I read this book a few years ago so I'm afraid my review won't be as precise as I'd like, but let me just say that I would very highly recommend this book. I'm a bit baffled as to why it hasn't been reviewed by anyone else yet. I suppose that would be because it comes off as an academic book critiquing mid-20th century literature. And while that is true, it addresses so many books and films that almost everyone has seen or read. For me, it was illuminating to discover common patterns through these texts and figure out why I love the literature I love.

Really you just have to read this book if you're interested in mid-20th century books and film. It's written in a very approachable style with several discrete essays, so it's easy to finish one essay and put it down for a month before picking it back up.

Fight against Fear is the first book to focus on Jews and African Americans in that remarkable place and time. Mindful of both communities' precarious and contradictory standings in the South, Clive Webb tells a complex story of resistance and complicity, conviction and apathy.

Webb begins by ranging over the experiences of southern Jews up to the eve of the civil rights movement―from antebellum slaveowners to refugees who fled Hitler's Europe only to arrive in the Jim Crow South. He then shows how the historical burden of ambivalence between Jews and blacks weighed on such issues as school desegregation, the white massive resistance movement, and business boycotts and sit-ins.

As many Jews grappled as never before with the ways they had become―and yet never could become―southerners, their empathy with African Americans translated into scattered, individual actions rather than any large-scale, organized alliance between the two groups. The reasons for this are clear, Webb says, once we get past the notion that the choices of the much larger, less conservative, and urban-centered Jewish populations of the North define those of all American Jews. To understand Jews in the South we must look at their particular circumstances: their small numbers and wide distribution, denominational rifts, and well-founded anxiety over defying racial and class customs set by the region's white Protestant majority.

For better or worse, we continue to define the history of Jews and blacks in America by its flash points. By setting aside emotions and shallow perceptions, Fight against Fear takes a substantial step toward giving these two communities the more open and evenhanded consideration their shared experiences demand.

Building off of the pioneering work of scholars such as Leonard Dinnerstein and Mark Bauman, Clive Webb's _Fight Against Fear_ is a major contribution to our understanding of both Jewish history and race relations in the United States. His footnotes and bibliography reveal an immense amount of research. He has visited at least twenty archives in numerous states. His analysis is as impressive as his research. Throughout the text, he portrays Jews in the South in all of their complexity. Some were outright racists who defended segregation vociferously. Others were brave citizens who fought for black civil rights even in the face of terrorism and personal danger. Still others negotiated a delicate balance between both extremes because of their uncertain place within the Southern social order. Southern Jewish life during the Civil Rights movement has never been so fully and so richly portrayed. This nuanced portrait also helps expand our understanding of race in the United States. Historians of the American South have longed envisioned their region in black and white. Professor Webb reveals that ethnicity among "whites" is an important category of analysis below the Mason-Dixon line. Those interested in Jewish history, the American South, and race relations in the twentieth century will want to buy this book.

Born into slavery in Kentucky, William Wells Brown (1814-1884) was kept functionally illiterate until after his escape at the age of nineteen. Remarkably, he became the most widely published and versatile African American writer of the nineteenth century as well as an important leader in the abolitionist and temperance movements.

Brown wrote extensively as a journalist but was also a pioneer in other literary genres. His many groundbreaking works include Clotel, the first African American novel; The Escape: or, A Leap for Freedom, the first published African American play; Three Years in Europe, the first African American European travelogue; and The Negro in the American Rebellion, the first history of African American military service in the Civil War. Brown also wrote one of the most important fugitive slave narratives and a striking array of subsequent self-narratives so inventively shifting in content, form, and textual presentation as to place him second only to Frederick Douglass among nineteenth-century African American autobiographers.

Ezra Greenspan has selected the best of Brown's work in a range of fields including fiction, drama, history, politics, autobiography, and travel. The volume opens with an introductory essay that places Brown and his work in a cultural and political context. Each chapter begins with a detailed introductory headnote, and the contents are closely annotated; there is also a selected bibliography. This reader offers an introduction to the work of a major African American writer who was engaged in many of the important debates of his time.

In the 1960s and 1970s, New Orleans experienced one of the greatest transformations in its history. Its people replaced Jim Crow, fought a War on Poverty, and emerged with glittering skyscrapers, professional football, and a building so large it had to be called the Superdome. New Orleans after the Promises looks back at that era to explore how a few thousand locals tried to bring the Great Society to Dixie. With faith in God and American progress, they believed that they could conquer poverty, confront racism, establish civic order, and expand the economy. At a time when liberalism seemed to be on the wane nationally, black and white citizens in New Orleans cautiously partnered with each other and with the federal government to expand liberalism in the South.

As Kent Germany examines how the civil rights, antipoverty, and therapeutic initiatives of the Great Society dovetailed with the struggles of black New Orleanians for full citizenship, he defines an emerging public/private governing apparatus that he calls the "Soft State": a delicate arrangement involving constituencies as varied as old-money civic leaders and Black Power proponents who came together to sort out the meanings of such new federal programs as Community Action, Head Start, and Model Cities. While those diverse groups struggled―violently on occasion―to influence the process of racial inclusion and the direction of economic growth, they dramatically transformed public life in one of America's oldest cities. While many wonder now what kind of city will emerge after Katrina, New Orleans after the Promises offers a detailed portrait of the complex city that developed after its last epic reconstruction.

About the Author
Kent B. Germany, a native of Louisiana and former resident of New Orleans, is Assistant Professor of History and African American Studies at the University of South Carolina. Previously he was Deputy Director of the Presidential Recordings Program and director of the LBJ Project at the University of Virginia's Miller Center of Public Affairs. He is co-host of "For The Record," a PBS program on politics and history, and is coeditor of two books about Lyndon Johnson and the 1960s: "The Kennedy Assassination and the Transfer of Power" and "Toward the Great Society."

Important study of a critical period in New Orleans history.

In order to understand why New Orleans was such a mess when the federal levees broke in 2005 it is necessary to understand the decades of decline the city had undergone. After the Promises sheds light on the changes in the 60's and early 70's, an incredibly tumultuous and defining time for the city, with a strong commitment to detail, however it is marred by the presumptions of its liberal author. The book begins with Johnson's "Great Society " and ends with Marc Essex, the New Orleans sniper; this sort of framing says a lot about the attitude beneath the surface towards the poor and black in New Orleans. Ultimately, it draws questionable conclusions and doesn't look deeply enough at changes such as the decline of the city's port in the falling fortunes of the city.

I ordered this book. It was a great price, arrived promptly, and was in first rate condition. The book itself is very well researched and competently written. Perhaps the best book on the subject of New Orleans anti-poverty efforts in the 1960s.

About the Author
FRANCIS LAM is editor-at-large at Clarkson Potter. He appears at the Critics’ Table in the fifth season of Top Chef Masters (Bravo). He was features editor at Gilt Taste, which was awarded six IACP awards and four James Beard award nominations in its first two years. His own writing has been nominated for a James Beard award and three IACP awards, winning one. He has served as senior writer at Salon.com and a contributing editor at Gourmet, and his work has appeared in the 2006–13 editions of Best Food Writing. JOHN T. EDGE is the director of the Southern Foodways Alliance at the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi. He is the author or editor of more than a dozen books, including the foodways volume of The New Encyclopedia of Southern Culture.

About the Author
Joe Mitchell is a certified senior ecologist with the Ecological Society of America and is the owner of Mitchell Ecological Research Services. He is author of "The Reptiles of Virginia and Atlas of Amphibians and Reptiles in Virginia." Whit Gibbons, a professor of ecology emeritus at the University of Georgia and head of the Environmental Outreach and Educational Program at the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, has written or coauthored more than a dozen popular and scientific ecology books.

Love this series!

I have all the books in this series and recommend them to anyone I know that has an interest in herps in the southeast. They are just full of information about individual species. It has great pictures and easy to read range maps. It covers all the information about life history without getting too scientific so all levels can use it.

Salamanders ROCK!!!!

Here it is, at long last... a marvelous and long-awaited volume on salamanders that completes this magnificent series outlining all the herp species of the Southeast. Some species give the distinct impression that a mad imaginative artist gone wild with a palette of dazzling colors designed them... some of their habits are equally bizarre, but all are rather secretive denizens of our woodlands that like to hide under logs and rocks and can require some effort to find... Some salamander species are associated with specific habitats like seasonal wetlands, cool mountain springs, etc. and this book takes the innovative approach of grouping the species accounts by the type of habitat they favor.

Amazingly, even now, some hitherto overlooked species are being discovered, like the tiny patch-nosed salamander (Urspelerpes brucei) which is apparently restricted to a small area in northeast Georgia and adjacent South Carolina. Many other subtle changes have been made to the taxonomy and scientific nomenclature, and this book will bring you up to date. Don't just walk -- run out and get this!
