The Rise and Decline of the Redneck Riviera: An Insider's History of the Florida-Alabama Coast, by Harvey Jackson III

The Rise and Decline of the Redneck Riviera traces the development of the Florida-Alabama coast as a tourist destination from the late 1920s and early 1930s, when it was sparsely populated with “small fishing villages,” through to the tragic and devastating BP/Deepwater Horizon oil spill of 2010.

Harvey H. Jackson III focuses on the stretch of coast from Mobile Bay and Gulf Shores, Alabama, east to Panama City, Florida―an area known as the “Redneck Riviera.” Jackson explores the rise of this area as a vacation destination for the lower South’s middle- and working-class families following World War II, the building boom of the 1950s and 1960s, and the emergence of the Spring Break “season.” From the late sixties through 1979, severe hurricanes destroyed many small motels, cafes, bars, and early cottages that gave the small beach towns their essential character. A second building boom ensued in the 1980s dominated by high-rise condominiums and large resort hotels. Jackson traces the tensions surrounding the gentrification of the late 1980s and 1990s and the collapse of the housing market in 2008. While his major focus is on the social, cultural, and economic development, he also documents the environmental and financial impacts of natural disasters and the politics of beach access and dune and sea turtle protection.

The Rise and Decline of the Redneck Riviera is the culmination of sixteen years of research drawn from local newspapers, interviews, documentaries, community histories, and several scholarly studies that have addressed parts of this region’s history. From his 1950s-built family vacation cottage in Seagrove Beach, Florida, and on frequent trips to the Alabama coast, Jackson witnessed the changes that have come to the area and has recorded them in a personal, in-depth look at the history and culture of the coast.

Review

Hardy Jackson writes about the Redneck Riviera with an insight and love that makes you want to travel back in time and stick your toes in the sands of its history. He makes you want to splash in the water when it was still clear, and sway in a hammock before condominiums eclipsed the sky. He makes you want to shake hands with the pirates and reprobates who once roamed here, in a time when it was apparently perfectly legal to shoot your ex-wife as long as you warned her not to come within shooting range. This is more than a history of a place and its brushes with disaster―the BP spill―and its changing social landscape. It is a story of a coast and a man's relationship with it. Those of us who have stared into that blue-green water have waited on this book for a long time.

(Rick Bragg author of The Prince of Frogtown)

This is a splendid social history, and Hardy Jackson, a native son of the coastal South, was born to write it. His witty prose combines the rigor of the trained scholar, the sharp eye of a journalist, and the unsentimental affection of a skilled memoirist. The result is the best guide yet to a geographic region that is also a cultural state of mind. I had as much fun reading it as I had on my first trip to Panama City Beach circa 1948.

(Howell Raines author of My Soul Is Rested)

Harvey Jackson’s Redneck Riviera is pure delight. From the Gilded Age resort hotels and the first mom 'n' pop motels, to Spring Break, mullet-tossing contests, and the 2010 Gulf oil spill, Jackson chronicles the booms and busts that have shaped his beloved Gulf Coast. He has the keen detachment of a historian and the passion of someone who cares deeply about sand dunes and honky-tonk bars.

(Gary R. Mormino Frank E. Duckwall professor of Florida history, University of South Florida St. Petersburg)

Even if you're not a redneck, you will want to go to the Alabama coastline when you read Harvey H. Jacksons III's new book, The Rise and Decline of the Redneck Riviera. . . . If there was ever a person that could tell the personal and historical story of the Redneck Riviera, it's Jackson, Eminent Scholar in History at Jacksonville State University.

(Theresa Shadrix Jacksonville News)

Hardy Jackson brings to this job all the right tools. . . . [H]e can personalize history, narrate history in a highly readable fashion and commit sociology in the best possible way, from personal experience and keen observation. . . . It is all here. Some chapters generate nostalgia, some anger, fear and loathing. All chapters can educate us and make readers think about what they value most.

(Don Noble Alabama Public Radio)

Reared in Clarke County, Ala., chasing 'submarines and alligators' along the Alabama River and whiling summers away on the Florida Panhandle, Jackson is as far from a tweedy academic as it is possible to imagine. He looks good in shorts, T-shirt and flip-flops, glories in offshore fishing, and loves the Flora-Bama with a passion to match that of any bubba. And, man, can he write. If after finishing this beer-soaked and sand-whipped tour de force you don't find yourself heading to the beach, check your pulse.

(John Sledge Mobile Press-Register)

Whether or not you have an attachment to the Gulf Coast, you'll find much that is interesting and entertaining in The Rise and Decline of the Redneck Riviera. . . . Mr. Jackson's personal perspective enhances rather than interferes with his analysis, and his lucid, often pithy writing makes this book an engaging read.

(Ray Hartwell Washington Times)

The most endangered species native to Florida's Panhandle and Alabama's Gulf Coast might just be the redneck. . . . The Rise and Decline of the Redneck Riviera is a fun romp through a place that has long been dedicated to fun but it also dips its toes into the cultural conflicts the region has experienced―a bit history, a bit social commentary and a good read.

(Susannah Nesmith Miami Herald)

What It Used To Be
By Ted M. Dunagan
Harvey H Jackson's Rise and Decline of the Redneck Riviera is not about the decline of the Gulf Coast of AL and FL, as far as the number of people living or visiting there, nor the lack of businesses, high-rise condo's and new homes. It's about the decline of the availability of it to the working man and his family as a place to do the things they couldn't back home.
Written with wit, clarity and accuracy, the book takes you back to all those special places which mostly are gone now. It tickles your memories to the point you almost feel the soft breeze and taste the salty air of the Gulf once again. It also documnets the economic and natural disasters of the area, and how it always recovered, from the 1930's right on up to the BP oil spill.
It's about how the newly arrived, the "raffish Rotarians, pirates with cash register eyeballs and hard-handed matrons" do not desire anyone to come there anymore and "run amok, act noxious and make offensive noises."
In 1960 I could do all those things, sleep on the beach and only be awakened in the morning by the bugs. Try that today and you'll be sleeping somewhere much less desirable than the beach.
For all the changes, good and bad, the author lets us know there are a few remnants of redneckery still hanging on down there. My favorite is still right there on the AL and Fl state line, the Florabama Bar, where they still toss mullets, play trashy white music, serve up refreshments, and where the ladies still leave their bras hanging from the rafters.

Good Book, But Some Sections Too in the Weeds
By T. Barksdale
I heartily recommend Harvey Jackson's book for anyone wanting to know the history of one of America's unique regions. I grew up in south Georgia and have been a regular visitor to the Redneck Riviera all my life. Jackson covers it all--the honky tonks and cheap tourist attractions right next to gated beach communities, average families on quiet vacations sharing space with drunken louts and ribald collegians on spring break. In the background, politicians and developers milking the beach cow for all it was worth, and the environment be damned. And enough colorful characters to keep anyone enthralled.

I sometimes felt that Jackson got too mired in details about what was being built at any one time. Also, like just about every book I read dealing with geography, the lack of maps--or even one detailed map--was appalling, a real drawback. This was a real gap in a book where discussion of specific towns and locations is what it's all about. Even better would have been maps or graphics showing specific developments. Before and after photos would have been a show stopper. I don't know whether my Kindle edition may lack visuals from the printed version.

But the book is overall a great read and evokes tons of nostalgia for those of us who were there almost from the beginning.

The Rise and Decline of the Redneck Riviera
By Jerry Brown
Hardy Jackson's easy, breezy style is perfect to convey the ebbs and flows of this well-named section of the Alabama-Florida coast. In fact, I can't imagine anyone more able, personally and professionally, to chronicle that storied strip. His family has owned a place there nearly forever, and he is preserving the family tradition. He has experienced and observed the shifting
fortunes of that part of the panhandle through happy and hard times (not mutually exclusive) for many decades. The reader can delight in descriptions of upcountry vacationers, hurricanes, boom-then-bust developers, municipal posturings, state spats, environmental issues, genuinely phony roadhouses, and striving parvenus. As a well-trained historian, Jackson knows how to find and test information, and, more importantly, how to set it in context. This book may provide ideas for satire, but it isn't one. Jackson holds back from snap judgments and preachments, and his writings convey an amusement, even an affection, for a place he's earned the right to criticize. And when he does, it sticks. The result is an entertaining, engaging history, useful beyond its subject as an example of what the public needs more of. The University of Georgia Press is to be thanked for publishing such a book. Historians are famous for being dull and ponderous and rarely conveying humility. Hardy Jackson can hold his own with those heavyweight academics, but, what the hell, he doesn't need to. Besides, the sun is shining down there. The beer and the sweet tea are cold. The children are playing in the sand while the wife is reading Southern Living and Grandma is shelling butterbeans. And the dad, well, he's startin' to feel lazy as hell, and projecting, and remembering.

Karl Barth and the Theology of the Lord's Supper : A Systematic Investigation (Issues in Systematic Theology, Vol 1), by Paul D. Molnar

This study of the Lord's Supper (which Barth did not live to write) systematically develops the implications of Karl Barth's doctrine of God for his view of the sacrament. It analyzes his conceptions of God, revelation, grace, and sacramental causality, critically comparing them to the views of Rahner, Torrance, Wainwright, Jüngel, Moltmann, Pannenberg, Gunton, and others. By contrasting Barth's views with more recent theology, this study clarifies many important issues that are often neglected or misunderstood by theologians who have moved «beyond» Barth without grappling with the important questions he raised, especially concerning God's freedom. Sacramental controversies are explored in the context of Christology and Trinitarian theology.

Seriously Funny: Poems about Love, Death, Religion, Art, Politics, Sex, and Everything ElseFrom Brand: University of Georgia Press

Can serious poetry be funny? Chaucer and Shakespeare would say yes, and so do the authors of these 187 poems that address timeless concerns but that also include comic elements.

Beginning with the Beats and the New York School and continuing with both marquee-name poets and newcomers, Seriously Funny ranges from poems that are capsized by their own tomfoolery to those that glow with quiet wit to ones in which a laugh erupts in the midst of terrible darkness.

Most of the selections were made in the editors’ battered compact car, otherwise known as the Seriously Funny Mobile Unit. During the two years in which Barbara Hamby and David Kirby made their choices, they’d set out with a couple of boxes of books in the back seat, and whoever wasn’t driving read to the other. When they found that a poem made both of them think but laugh as well, they earmarked it.

Readers will find a true generosity in these poems, an eagerness to share ideas and emotions and also to entertain. The singer Ali Farka Touré said that honey is never good when it’s only in one mouth, and the editors of Seriously Funny hope its readers find much to share with others.

Review

From Frank O’Hara’s ‘Poem (Lana Turner Has Collapsed!)’ and John Ashbery’s ‘Daffy Duck in Hollywood’ to a host of younger poets now writing ‘seriously funny’ poems, this anthology argues eloquently that poetry is not just the equivalent of somber personal reflection, that indeed from Chaucer to the present, humor, irony, satire, and play are as integral to poetry as they are to narrative prose. Turning the pages of this generous anthology, you will smile and chuckle―and also weep!

(Marjorie Perloff author of Radical Artifice: Writing Poetry in the Age of Media)

I loved this book. From its mouth-watering table of contents to its last eccentric, splendid poem, Kirby and Hamby have put paid to the notion that serious poetry can’t have a sense of humor. When people ask me to recommend something good to read that’s both thought provoking and irresistibly entertaining, poetry anthologies don’t generally come to mind. This one will.

(Nancy Pearl author of Book Lust)

During a time when so many of our poets seem afflicted by mere self-importance and an almost-Pavlovian tic of irony, this book celebrates the other kind of funny―the sort that is mordant, absurdist, and keen to both laud and critique the madness and fascinating lunacy of our culture. Hamby and Kirby have assembled a bracing set of poems which remind us anew how closely heartbreak, humor and wisdom literature are aligned. These poems spring from necessity, not from the desire for punch lines.

(David Wojahn author of Interrogation Palace: New and Selected Poems 1982–2004)

About the Author

A serendipitous collection of poems
By Keith Jennings
My review in a nutshell: If you love contemporary poetry, get this book. If you love accessible poetry, get this book. And if you love poetry with literary depth, get this book.

I am a huge fan of David Kirby and Barbara Hamby. They are refreshing voices in a crowded American poetry scene. So anything with their name(s) associated with it is worth the purchase sight unseen.

I've now spent a few months with this book, and it keeps delivering.

I keep pulling it off the shelf and letting the pages fall open, and more often than not, I get serendipity.

Like the Billy Collins poem "The Trouble with Poetry," (it's not in this collection, but 4 of his are) reading these poems makes you want to write more poetry.

I hope you will add this book to your collection, and look up other work by David and Barbara. You won't be disappointed.

Precisely fits its title
By Jessica Weissman
David Kirby and Barbara Hamby are both poets who specialize in seriously funny poems, and they're very good at recognizing good poems by others that fit into this narrow but wondrous category.

What we have here is 400 or so pages of accessible contemporary poetry that is:

1) good

2) treats some serious subject with respect and depth

3) is funny

Exactly as the title promises. You could dig for hours and read through a lot of mediocre poetry yourself to find these gems. Thank goodness the editors have done it for you.

Buy the book. You won't regret it, and you're likely to find contemporary poets, new to you, whose books you will enjoy.

Must Have a Broad Sense of Humor
By booklover
Some of the poems are laugh out loud. Some of them elicited a chuckle. Some of them are, hmmm...what I would call interesting. Keep an open mind folks. This is not a seriously funny in the sense that your belly will hurt from laughter.

On Tarzan, by Alex Vernon

On Tarzan is a sometimes playful, sometimes serious, and always provocative consideration of the twentieth century's best-known fictional character. It is also the first book-length investigation of a century's worth of Tarzan's incarnations and our varied imaginative responses to them. As Alex Vernon looks at how and why we have accorded mythical, archetypal status to Tarzan, he takes stock of the Tarzan books, films, and comics as well as some of the many faux- and femme-Tarzan rip-offs, the toys and other tie-in products, the fanzines, and the appropriation of Tarzan's image in the media.

Tarzan first appeared in 1912. To ponder his journey from jungle lord then to Disney boy-toy now is, as Vernon writes, to touch on "childhood, adolescence, and adulthood, especially for the male of the species; on colonialism and nationhood; on Hollywood and commerce, race and gender, sex and death, Darwin and Freud. On nature―is Tarzan friend or foe? On imagination and identity."

Vernon exposes the contradictions, ambiguities, and coincidences of the Tarzan phenomenon. Tarzan is noble and savage, eternal adolescent and eternal adult, hero to immigrants and orphans but also to nativist Americans. Edgar Rice Burroughs's Tarzan story is racist, but Tarzan himself is racially slippery. Although Tarzan asserts his white superiority over savage Africans, his adventures flirt with miscegenation and engage our ongoing obsession with all things primitive.

As the 2012 centennial of Tarzan's creation approaches, the ape-man's hold on us can still manifest itself in surprising ways. This entertaining study, with its rich and multilayered associations, offers a provocative model for understanding the life cycle of pop culture phenomena.

Review

On Tarzan is an elegantly written foray into the cultural jungle that has grown up around Tarzan.

(Matt Cohen editor of Brother Men: The Correspondence of Edgar Rice Burroughs and Herbert T. Weston)

On Tarzan is a wonderful read . . . a great introduction to cultural studies, to American studies, and also to the 'American Century.' The book hinges neatly on Vernon's continual discovery of paradox and/or contradiction both within relevant contexts (gender, sexuality, colonialism, etc.) and across them.

(Kevin Kopelson author of Sedaris)

On Tarzan is an intelligent, revelatory, meditative series of essays on the place of Tarzan within Western culture. Vernon demonstrates a remarkable grasp of the wide range of disciplines that contribute to this book, including history, psychology, and film theory. The writing is so thoughtful and daring that Vernon seems to be breaking new ground in cultural studies.

(Choice)

On Tarzan is a highbrow romp through a lowbrow craze that influenced both Amos Oz and Gore Vidal. It is a study that deserves to be influential in its own right.

(Times Literary Supplement)

On Tarzan consistently lodges its analysis within the context of the time that these pop culture artifacts were produced. Tarzan plots revolve around cultural imperialism, American capitalism, miscegenation, problematic portrayals of ethnicity and gender, and orgies of violence replacing sexual love. While Vernon rigorously debates these controversies, he refrains from criticizing in the vein of 20 – 20 hindsight; he allows the texts to be seen in their natural, historical habitat.

(Journal of Popular Culture)

Disappointing...
By Anthony L. Mascia
The author clearly is articulate and has done his homework with both Tarzan movies and the Edgar Rice Burroughs' book series.

However...

Two huge problems with this book. One: the author is obviously cherry-picking out-of-context book passages and movie scenes to fit his own (occasionally bizarre) views on how Tarzan has effected or influenced our culture. Two: more importantly, even if one was inclined to agree with the author, it would be hard to discover this, as the book is written more from a stream-of-consciousness style, than with a coherent, logical progression. This style is further aggravated with an almost smirky (NOT playful or witty) tone.

While one previous reviewer was a little extreme in suggesting Burroughs' family sue the author, the reviewer from the Midwest Book Review has some real explaining ( 5 stars???) to do.

There should be no surprise why the Paperback edition of this book is being sold at a VERY deep discount.

I was a big Tarzan fan as a kid. Never missed a movie, so I would have liked more photos in the book. I find it ironic that Cheeta out lived them all! Good book for a round trip airline ticket.

The Nashville Sound: Bright Lights and Country Music, by Paul Hemphill

While on a Nieman Fellowship at Harvard, journalist and novelist Paul Hemphill wrote of that pivotal moment in the late sixties when traditional defenders of the hillbilly roots of country music were confronted by the new influences and business realities of pop music. The demimonde of the traditional Nashville venues (Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge, Robert’s Western World, and the Ryman Auditorium) and first-wave artists (Roy Acuff, Ernest Tubb, and Lefty Frizzell) are shown coming into first contact, if not conflict, with a new wave of pop-influenced and business savvy country performers (Jeannie C. “Harper Valley PTA” Riley, Johnny Ryles, and Glen Campbell) and rock performers (Bob Dylan, Gram Parsons, the Byrds, and the Grateful Dead) as they took the form well beyond Music City. Originally published in 1970, The Nashville Sound shows the resulting identity crisis as a fascinating, even poignant, moment in country music and entertainment history.

Review
The best book ever written about country music. (Chicago Sun-Times)

A first-rate book . . . that reads as smoothly and sparklingly as a bluegrass breakdown. (Christopher Lehmann-Haupt New York Times)

All these years later, the Prologue [‘Friday Night at Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge’] reads as though it happened last night. (Country Music magazine)

A rich, raw slice of American life. (Los Angeles Times)

It’s the first ‘real’ book written about our music. The people, the songs, the places, all come to life in these pages. (Bill Anderson, singer, songwriter, and Grand Ole Opry star)

To say Hemphill is writing about country music is like saying Hemingway wrote about boxers and fisherman. What Hemphill writes about is America, and he has done it here with the incisive feel and the fine sure language and that very special knack of keeping his subject alive in print that so many of us strive for but so few of us achieve. A damned fine reading experience. (Joe McGinnis Life magazine)

Anyone ever exposed to country music―which means nearly everyone―will go for the book the way Uncle Joe goes for bacon and grits. (Publishers Weekly)

A marvelously honest look at music that deals with what people―real, live truck-driving, factory-working, beer-drinking people―feel about life. (Louisville Times)

From the first words of its preface―spent submerged in the smoky haze of Tootsie’s on a rowdy Friday night thick with booze and the kinds of aspirations that Music City can both foster and crush―The Nashville Sound is nothing short of captivating and essential to understanding the genre, whatever its boundaries may have been, or will be." (Steve Haruch Chapter 16)

I recommend this book to any and all who like the old style country music
By Kindle Customer
The Nashville Sound by Paul Hemphill, was received from the publisher in exchange for this review. First and foremost, the book was written 45 years ago. The re-release has a updated Foreword and some reviews from the more modern era. Having been born and raised on country music but having been a heavy metal fan since my first KISS cassette in 1978ish, I actually knew a lot of the names in the book and had heard many of them, this book kind of picked up where I had left off. I am moving to the Nashville area in the next three to five years so I wanted to get familiar with the town, and this book was one way to do that, to get “grounded” in country music. The closest I have come to actually country music since the 1970’s was meeting Hank Williams grandson, Hank III, who has his own thoughts on the genre. Anyway I liked the book, the writer was a good writer and I recommend this book to any and all who like the old style country music. The new stuff, I am clueless about.

One set of additional maps provides background into the political state of the nation as it headed into the war; another set covers the war as it was fought in the western reaches of the country. The text on facing pages supports each map with extra facts and figures, while the atlas's big 14 x 10 format allows for exceptional line clarity, color, and detail.

Review

There is nothing like this atlas, which illustrates with great clarity the month-by-month political changes of the Civil War. It makes a notable contribution in allowing readers to look at the entire strategic landscape of the war, placing various events and movements in geographical context.

(Gary W. Gallagher author of Lee and His Army in Confederate History)

Atlas of the Civil War, Month by Month is unique among works of its type in its graphic representation of the grand sweep and movement of the war. No student of the Civil War will want to be without this valuable resource.

(Steven E. Woodworth author of Beneath a Northern Sky: A Short History of the Gettysburg Campaign)

[A] clear, engaging overview of the Civil War.

(Midwest Book Review)

Creating and detailing such a large number of maps and preparing the accompanying text was a huge undertaking, and author Mark Swanson . . . has done it well. The research is extensive, the writing is crisp and concise, and the maps are first rate. Atlas of the Civil War, Month by Month is a very valuable addition to Civil War scholarship.

(Arkansas Historical Quarterly)

More than fifty crisply rendered maps show the broad sweep of military campaigns and naval operations in chronological order. . . . There is much useful information here and the careful search will be rewarded.

(America’s Civil War)

Mark Swanson and Jacqueline D. Langley have done students of the Civil War a great service in producing this excellent atlas. Even at a glance, readers are able to get a much better grasp of the sweeping movements of the war and their overall significance.

Excellent resource!
By Amazon Customer
I am 43 years old, wearing spectacles and do not have any trouble reading the fonts on either the maps or the accompanying text on the facing page, so you can safely buy it without fear of having an unreadable text, as alleged by a previous reviewer. I greatly appreciate how this gives an overall bird's eye view of how the war as a whole progressed over time, so you can join the dots for individual events. Excellent resource!!!

A suggestion for a future edition if any, will be to overlay the maps with terrain and also major transportation features such as railways, roads and ports. Economic features such as major industrial centres, and food production / plantation areas can also be included. This will allow readers to discern why certain areas were contested or why troops needed to move in a certain direction at a glance on the same map. The maps surely looks spacious enough to receive this treatment.

Engaging reference to follow course of Civil War
By Henry Berry
The scope of the 50 primary maps is virtually the complete theater of the Civil War lasting roughly four years--from the shifting northern boundary in Virginia and the Washington, D.C. area to the Gulf Coast, from North and South Carolina to Missouri and roughly the middle of Texas in the West. Each of the monthly maps identifies Union and Confederate positions and respective troop and cavalry movements and naval movements; clashes of all sizes, including notable skirmishes; and the front lines over the large area as these shifted month-by-month throughout the War. Thus, one can readily follow the overall strategies and activities of each side, as well as developments in particular areas. On left-hand pages facing the full-page maps are details relating to what is identified in the maps. For example, the partisan disturbance in Alabama signified in the August 1863 map is noted as "a band of deserters known as 'Jim Ward's Raiders' [operating] out of the Pea River Swamp south of Elba." In relation to the map for September 1863, the annotation for North Carolina cites that Longstreet's soldiers passing through Raleigh sacked the offices of the pro-Union, pro-peace newspaper the "Standard." Besides following the War with the succession of maps, the Civil War buff and military historian also learns many little-known incidents and circumstances from the annotations. Several secondary maps after the main ones record military activities in the Southwest, including the lower half of California and the western part of the Texas. The large-size reference is an ideal accompaniment to any book, movie, TV program, newspaper article, etc. on the Civil War to put its subject in context. And it also stands on its own as a clear, engaging overview of the Civil War.

Civil War Maps You Can Really Use
By M. B. Newell
Mark Swanson has given us a very useful overview of the Civil War, emphasis on useful. This book is brief, giving maps of each month of the war with descriptive text on the facing page. Thus teachers, professors, travelers, and anyone seeking quick information will profit. Even veteran Civil War buffs will find information they did not know about. As anyone familiar with the war knows, there are many huge volumes covering virtually every aspect of the war, so this book is welcome since there is nothing else like it. Certainly more detail could have been given such as on the causes of the war. Yet Swanson is right in discussing slavery as the major cause, leaving other issues to other books. I would note that without slavery there would have been no war; states do not secede and people do not go to war over things like tariffs. Thus, this is not the volume to look to for lengthy discussion. Its purpose is to help one get an informative overview of the war as it unfolded, and to help one do so quickly. It succeeds admirably.

Slavery in America: A Reader and GuideFrom Brand: University of Georgia Press

Designed specially for undergraduate course use, this new textbook is both an introduction to the study of American slavery and a reader of core texts on the subject. No other volume that combines both primary and secondary readings covers such a span of time―from the early seventeenth century to the Civil War.

The book begins with a substantial introduction to the entire volume that gives an overview of slavery in North America. Each of the twelve chapters that follow has an introduction that discusses the leading secondary books and articles on the topic in question, followed by an essay and three primary documents. Questions for further study and discussion are included in the chapter introduction, while further readings are suggested in the chapter bibliography.

Topics covered include slave culture, the slave-based economy, slavery and the law, slave resistance, pro-slavery ideology, abolition, and emancipation. The essays, by such eminent historians as Drew Gilpin Faust, Don E. Fehrenbacher, Eric Foner, John Hope Franklin, and Sylvia R. Frey, have been selected for their teaching value and ability to provoke discussion. Drawing on black and white, male and female experiences, the primary documents come from a wide variety of sources: diaries, letters, laws, debates, oral testimonies, travelers’ accounts, inventories, journals, autobiographies, petitions, and novels.

Review

I am impressed by the organization, content, and coverage of this reader. The editor has blended most, if not all, of the latest developments in the field of slavery studies with appropriate documents. He has done so in a very organized and logical fashion, and I would not hesitate to assign this work in my undergraduate classes.

(Christine Daniels Michigan State University)

The combination of secondary and primary extracts with substantial editorial pieces is particularly impressive. The overview, followed by essays for each section, looks good. Often editorial pieces in other works are too brief. The coverage of the colonial period as well as later years is a significant strength, and the balance between thematic and chronological emphasis is good.

(Michael Tadman University of Liverpool)

Kenneth Morgan then is to be complimented for attempting to bring together a range of documents, essays, and short synopsis, all into one work accessible to undergraduate students. All of us who teach undergraduate history courses, whether surveys or upper division courses will be in Morgan’s debt for producing a work that should stimulate classroom discussion. . . . Kenneth Morgan has done a remarkable job synthesizing a tremendous amount of historical research. . . . He has also managed to put into the hands of students and scholars a concise volume that tells us a great deal about the institution of slavery. This is clearly an important work that students and teachers will do well to consult as a very useful resource.

Did Pocahontas Save Captain John Smith?, by J. Lemay

By the mid-nineteenth century, Captain John Smith, the early colonial explorer and settler, was a well-known figure in American history. The story of how, in 1607, the Powhatan princess Pocahontas saved him from execution by her tribe appeared in all the standard American histories. Numerous plays, novels, and poems were devoted to the episode. Starting in the 1860s, however, scholars began to question Smith’s published accounts of the Pocahontas incident, and a controversy ensued, with Henry Adams becoming Smith’s most famous detractor. Today many scholars continue to regard Smith as a vainglorious braggart who lied about his rescue.

J. A. Leo Lemay offers the first full analysis of the historiography of this debate. Examining all of the primary and secondary evidence, he persuasively demonstrates that the incident did in fact occur. A tightly argued study, Did Pocahontas Save Captain John Smith? not only refutes the outright skeptics; it effectively reverses the prevailing judgment that the truth will never be known.

From Library Journal
The veracity of John Smith's account of his romantic 1607 rescue by Pochahontas was first challenged in the 1860s by essayist Henry Adams and historian Charles Deane. In this meticulous review of the sources of the controversy, author Lemay endeavors to show that the incident actually happened. He succeeds primarily by applying logic to his analysis of the texts by Smith and those of his 19th-century supporters and detractors. Lemay strengthens his argument by showing that none of Smith's contemporaries, Native American or English, was ever quoted as disagreeing with his account of the incident. While this is no longer a burning question in many circles, Lemay's study is appropriate for libraries with historiography collections.

Review

Lemay has provided the most thorough study to date of the crucial documents concerning Pocahontas’s supposed rescue of John Smith.

(William and Mary Quarterly)

His examination of his sources is quite thorough and illuminates both the time period in which the Smith/Pocahontas episode occurred and the process of nineteenth-century historical debate.

(Southern Historian)

A refutation of the idea that Smith made the whole thing up after Pocahontas had died
By Gene Rhea Tucker
A succinct introduction to the issue, a telling of both sides, and a thorough refutation of the idea that Smith made the whole thing up after Pocahontas had died. As someone who came to this subject through Davidson and Lytle, and not knowing much about it in depth, I had always been in the "could have been true, could have been made up, we'll never know camp." Now, I do think, pretty firmly, that Smith's account was true. Lemay makes logical mincemeat out of Smith's detractors (especially the poor gadfly Henry Adams) and establishes a strong case for Smith's veracity and the historicity of the episode. Highly recommended for a historiographical class, those interested in colonial Virginia, and those looking for a quick read.

A History of New Testament Lexicography (Studies in Biblical Greek), by John A. L. Lee

New Testament lexicons of today are comprehensive, up-to-date, and authoritative. Behind them lies a tradition dating back to the sixteenth century, whose characteristics are not well known. Besides giving a history of this tradition, A History of New Testament Lexicography demonstrates its less satisfactory features, notably its dependence on predecessors, the influence of translations, and its methodological shortcomings. John A. L. Lee not only criticizes the existing tradition, but stimulates thought on new goals that New Testament lexicography needs to set for itself in the twenty-first century. This book caters to the non-specialist as well as those interested in philological detail.

An enjoyable not infrequently witty tour of NT lexicography
By Mark L Ward Jr
Academic tomes in relatively obscure series written (apparently) for an esoteric few aren't supposed to be this enjoyable. Lee's book even kept diverting me from studying for my NT comprehensive exams (until I hit the second part, which is a little slower going).

Part 1 is a fascinating historical tour, replete with photographs of ancient lexicons Lee unearthed. Lee managed to process a massive amount of information--the contents of dozens of lexicons in various languages--by wisely selective reading. He describes the character of these works in order to build a convincing narrative about them. The themes of that narrative, I'd say, are two: 1) the gloss method of definition is deficient, and 2) every lexicon necessarily builds off of others: beware!

Part 2 applies his insights to a fresh processing of the usage data for various NT words, including AGAPHTOS and other less well-known words.

Lee offers some key suggestions as to the direction NT lexicography ought to go in the future. I'm excited to see (during my lifetime?) the production of his own (and G.A. Horsley's) "Lexicon of the New Testament with Documentary Parallels."

Fascinating
By Joel van Loon
Although I will readily admit that the title of this book alone would make many people assume that it cannot be very interesting, I must take a stand and say that the book was extremely interesting and helpful. I might never have read the book if it had not been assigned for one of my classes, but I am very glad that I read it.

Lee does a very good job detailing the history of the lexica. He outlines both the things that the lexicographers have done well and also the shortcomings. Beyond that, he writes in a very engaging style, so that the reader is kept interested. Overall, I was very impressed with this book and would highly recommend it to anyone who is serious about delving into the Greek New Testament.

Edifying Experience (Mostly)
By Kyrillos o Bibliothikarios
I confess Ancient Greek Lexicography is an area of interest for me, so my review is biased. I will not prognosticate what your experience will be. As Lee says Lexicons are considered the last word when it comes to meaning. So the reader will come away understanding the history behind the glosses (one word equivalents) in their Liddell-Scott and Bauer-Danker lexicons. Once they understand the Latin-German-English evolution behind our English lexicons, perhaps that knowledge will encourage translators of Greek to do word studies and not blindly follow fallible lexicons. Lee acknowledges that New Testament studies are in a better state than the Classics or Hellenistic literature, lexicographically speaking. The inadequacies of our Greek lexicons was handled with even-handedness by Lee. He devotes the remainder of the book to examples of the inadequacies mentioned in the historical section through case studies of particular lexemes. There are no smoking guns, just examples where minor adjustments are needed.
