John Bachman: Selected Writings on Science, Race, and Religion (The Publications of the Southern Texts Society Ser.), by John Bachman

John Bachman (1790-1874) was an internationally renowned naturalist and a prominent Lutheran minister. This is the first collection of his writings, containing selections from his three major books, his letters, and his articles on plants and animals, education, religion, agriculture, and the human species.

Bachman was the leading authority on North American mammals. He was responsible for the descriptions of the 147 mammal species included in "Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America," a massive work produced in collaboration with John James Audubon. Bachman relied entirely on scientific evidence in his work and was exceptional among his fellow naturalists for studying the whole of natural history.

Bachman also relied on scientific evidence in his "Doctrine of the Unity of the Human Race." He showed that human beings constitute a single species that developed as varieties equivalent to the varieties of domesticated animals. In this work, perhaps his most significant accomplishment, Bachman stood nearly alone in challenging the polygenetic views of Louis Agassiz and others that white and black people descended from different progenitors.

Bachman was also an important figure in the establishment of Lutheranism in the Southeast. He wrote the first American monograph on the doctrines of Martin Luther and the history of the Reformation. Bachman served for fifty-six years as minister of St. John's Lutheran Church in Charleston, South Carolina, and was one of the founders of Newberry College.

Review

Waddell’s thoughtful selections from Bachman’s writings offer an excellent picture of a truly significant figure in the history of natural history, the defense of all human races as a single species, and the development of religion in the American South.

(Lester D. Stephens author of Science, Race, and Religion in the American South: John Bachman and the Charleston Circle of Naturalists: 1815–1895)

Waddell . . . has skillfully compiled portions of Bachman’s writings on the title’s three topics (the bulk of the text includes his work in natural history) along with some of his personal correspondence, showing him to be scientific, thoughtful, and still well worth reading. (D. A. Lovejoy Choice)

About the Author
Gene Waddell is Special Collections Archivist Emeritus at the College of Charleston and former director of the South Carolina Historical Society. Waddell is the author of the two-volume Charleston Architecture, 1670–1860.

Combating Weapons of Mass Destruction: The Future of International Nonproliferation Policy (Studies in Security and International Affairs)

The spread of weapons of mass destruction poses one of the greatest threats to international peace and security in modern times―the specter of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons looms over relations among many countries. The September 11 tragedy and other terrorist attacks have been painful warnings about gaps in nonproliferation policies and regimes, specifically with regard to nonstate actors.

In this volume, experts in nonproliferation studies examine challenges faced by the international community and propose directions for national and international policy making and lawmaking. The first group of essays outlines the primary threats posed by WMD proliferation and terrorism. Essays in the second section analyze existing treaties and other normative regimes, including the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the Chemical Weapons and Biological Weapons Conventions, and recommend ways to address the challenges to their effectiveness. Essays in part three examine the shift some states have made away from nonproliferation treaties and regimes toward more forceful and proactive policies of counterproliferation, such as the Proliferation Security Initiative, which coordinates efforts to search and seize suspect shipments of WMD-related materials.

Review

Written by an impressive group of leading scholars, with some new voices in the field added in, the chapters are uniformly strong in presenting balanced and detailed analysis of the critical problems emerging in nonproliferation policy. Combating Weapons of Mass Destruction is a significant contribution to the field of security studies.

(Scott D. Sagan coauthor of The Spread of Nuclear Weapons: A Debate Renewed)

Extremely well researched, the chapters are replete with concrete real-world cases and illustrations of the problems and risks. The authors―well-known experts in the field of weapons proliferation―avoid endorsing a moralistic standard of analysis . . . and they recognize that some tough choices have to be made. An important value of the collection is that it brings the reader up to the moment in terms of the current flow of developments, both positive and negative.

(George H. Quester author of Nuclear Monopoly)

Busch and Joyner have assembled a first-rate group of scholars well qualified to illuminate the critically important issues of combating weapons of mass destruction. The results speak for themselves in a highly positive way. Individual chapters resonate with their own authority and insights while contributing to the overall themes of the book. This volume will be highly respected by experts but its clear and concise style also makes it accessible to the general public. It fully deserves close attention by both groups.

(Jack Caravelli author of Nuclear Insecurity: Understanding the Threat from Rogue Nations and Terrorists)

About the Author
Nathan E. Busch is an associate professor of political science at Christopher Newport University and author of No End in Sight: The Continuing Menace of Nuclear Proliferation. Daniel H. Joyner is an associate professor at the University of Alabama Law School and editor of Non-proliferation Export Controls: Origins, Challenges, and Proposals for Strengthening.

Review

Refreshingly sensitive to Canadian misperceptions of the United States as well as to the perennial American ignorance of Canada.

(New York Times Book Review)

Informative and entertaining . . . Recount[s] with considerable verve the saga of Canadian-American relations over more than two centuries.

(Times Literary Supplement)

An important book that promises to become the standard in the field . . . The reader is rewarded with a fair and insightful historical perspective of the complex North American relationship.

(Journal of American History)

This timely volume constitutes a major addition to the growing library of scholarly works on Canadian-American relations. Given the growing importance of this multidimensional relationship even for the United States, one wonders why major studies of this unique bond remain relatively rare. . . . In sum, this important and useful volume, enriched by impressive footnoting and an exceptionally thorough bibliographic essay, deserves careful study and wide circulation. It should be on the reading list of all general courses dealing with Canadian-U.S. relations and it should be acquired by every North American high school, college, and university library. Perhaps most important, every Canadian or U.S. policymaker whose responsibilities include some aspect of Canadian-U.S. relations should know its contents well; this work is probably the best single-volume treatment of the subject to date.

(Perspectives on Political Science)

A profoundly important book. At a time when there has been much romanticization of master-slave relations, Gross dissects hundreds of antebellum legal cases in which the presumed attributes of blacks, whites, and those 'in between' were litigated. What emerges is a pattern of assumptions whose power was sanctioned by law and whose legacy we battle still. A brilliant work of scholarship.

(Canadian Journal of Political Science)

A book that will, for years, be the benchmark against which future studies of Canadian-American relations will have to be measured.

(Contemporary Sociology)

A very solid piece of scholarship, written in a graceful, engaging manner that will appeal to a broad audience of readers.

(American Review of Canadian Studies)

A comprehensive, lively, and opinionated history of Canadian-American relations. The skillful weaving of social and cultural issues and concerns into their story, especially in the latter half of the book, and the placement of United States policy towards Canada with the other states in the hemisphere, are valuable contributions to the analysis of the relationship. . . . The book merits a wide readership by students, scholars, and others in both Canada and the United States.

(Canadian Historical Review)

Rabble Rousers: The American Far Right in the Civil Rights Era (Politics and Culture in the Twentieth-Century South Ser.), by Clive Webb

The decade following the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision saw white southerners mobilize in massive resistance to racial integration. Most segregationists conceded that ultimately they could only postpone the demise of Jim Crow. Some militant whites, however, believed it possible to win the civil rights struggle. Histories of the black freedom struggle, when they mention these racist zealots at all, confine them to the margin of the story.

These extremist whites are caricatured as ineffectual members of the lunatic fringe. Civil rights activists, however, saw them for what they really were: calculating, dangerous opponents prepared to use terrorism in their stand against reform. To dismiss white militants is to underestimate the challenge they posed to the movement and, in turn, the magnitude of civil rights activists’ accomplishments. The extremists helped turn massive resistance into a powerful political phenomenon. While white southern elites struggled to mobilize mass opposition to racial reform, the militants led entire communities in revolt.

Rabble Rousers turns traditional top-down models of massive resistance on their head by telling the story of five far-right activists―Bryant Bowles, John Kasper, Rear Admiral John Crommelin, Major General Edwin Walker, and J. B. Stoner―who led grassroots rebellions. It casts new light on such contentious issues as the role of white churches in defending segregation, the influence of anti-Semitism in southern racial politics, and the divisive impact of class on white unity. The flame of the far right burned brilliantly but briefly. In the final analysis, violent extremism weakened the cause of white southerners. Tactical and ideological tensions among massive resisters, as well as the strength and unity of civil rights activists, accelerated the destruction of Jim Crow.

Fascinating
By Whozapuzalooza
I read this book for a grad class about the 1960s. While most studies of the Civil Rights movement focus on the movement itself, Webb instead examines the leading actors of those who opposed desegregation. This book is not about the KKK or other groups, while they merit some mention, Webb focuses on the men who deemed themselves the leaders and/or agitators who often successfully stirred ordinary citizens to violent action. This book also relies heavily on the supposition of class warfare within the South, in that blue-collar laborers were often excluded from anti-desegregation because of a perceived lack of education. This exclusion left the door open for agitators to capitalize on the income gaps and the supposed problems desegregation would cause. Although I read it for a class, I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more about the dark side of the Civil Rights era.

A fascinating slice of history
By Michael D. Newton
Rabble Rousers fills a void in scholarship surrounding the African American civil rights era--specifically, the role played by key racist demagogues outside of government in organizing violent white resistance to desegregation. The individuals profiled, often overlooked or briefly mentioned in passing by general histories of the period, bear a lesson for modern Americans in an age of racist "Tea Party" madness.

Useful Gifts: Stories, by Carole Glickfeld

Charged with the mystery of childhood, with curiosity and daring, confusion and fear, the eleven interrelated stories in Useful Gifts explore what Ruthie knows. The youngest child of profoundly deaf parents living in Manhattan in the 1940s and 1950s, Ruthie Zimmer speaks and signs. Interpreting for her parents, she tries to make sense of worlds as close as her family's fourth-floor apartment, as expansive as her rooftop playground and as diverse as the neighborhood below.

The ways of language, its ways, its habits, its humor―as well as the demons that rise within us when we fail to communicate―form an undercurrent in many of Carole Glickfeld's stories. In "What My Mother Knows" Hannah Zimmer gleans the neighborhood gossip from her apartment window, telling Ruthie in a gesture that Mrs. Frangione is pregnant again, and announcing in clipped, terse signs that the O'Briens have divorced. "Know drunk?…Unhappy, fight, wife, divorce." There is, in "My Father's Darling" the hoarse, choked screaming of Albert Zimmer, "Honorfatherhonorfatherhonorfather" striking his daughter Melva has she sinks to the floor muttering "Misermisermisermiser" in the distant, disembodied voice of a ventriloquist. And, in "Talking Mama-Losh'n" there is Sidney, Ruthie's older brother, "getting down to business," sprinkling his speech with Yiddish, French and German―words that project a wisdom and cosmopolitanism he clearly craves.

Three floors below the Zimmer apartment, Ruthie enters the altogether different realm of Dot, a thrice-married hatcheck girl, and her daughter and son, Glory and Roy Rogers. These are characters who, as their names seem to promise, bring adventure and excitement―from acted-out fantasies of Hollywood to gunfights amid the rooftop battlements of "Fort Arden," from impulsive, stylish haircuts to Chinese food with pork. And, across the stoop, Ruthie visits with the Opals family―Iris, Ivy, and Ione―three daughters whose endless lessons in charm, elocution and posture prime them for future "fame and glory."

In Useful Gifts, Carole Glickfeld creates, through the optimistic voice of a young girl, intimacy with the complexity and heartbreak of a world we hope she can survive. In the closing story of the collection, Ruth Zimmer, twenty years older, retraces her neighborhood―not only to preserve her memories but to understand, finally, their effect on her now, a grown woman living three thousand miles away.

From Publishers Weekly
In this collection of 11 interrelated stories, winner of this year's Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction, the world of Ruthie Zimmer, youngest child of Jewish deaf-mute parents, is captured wth aching authenticity. The favorite of her abused housewife-mother, as well as of her tyrannical, philandering father, Ruthie is an exuberant, rollerskating, prepubescent girl when we first meet her, enjoying the close-knit yet multiethnic neighborhood of the Inwood section of Manhattan. We follow her as she becomes an adept interpreter; signing for her parents, coping with her growing awareness of the problems that will eventually lead to their divorce, and to abiding sadness for her older brother and sister. The theme of the final story, longer and reflecting the loss of Ruthie's youthful insouciance and optimism, is one of survival, that of Ruthie and her octogenarian father, locked in their thorny relationship. The stories are redolent of a New York neighborhood that once was.

From Library Journal
Set in Manhattan in the 1940s and 1950s, the 11 stories in this splendid debut feature Ruthie Zimmer, the youngest child of deaf-mute parents. The first ten stories record the observations of a precocious, prepubescent Ruthie; the longer final one is told by Ruth as a worldly grown-up--unlucky in love and unable to discard the emotional baggage of childhood. Glickfield displays a gift for characterization, particularly when describing the abusive, miserly father whom Ruthie can neither love nor abandon. Stylish nostalgia is tempered with humor and hard-boiled realism in this winner of the Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction.

A wonderfully evocative debut collection . . . An understated, pitch-perfect prose style and a view of childhood . . . as dark and comic as it is moving.

Overwhelmingly Beautiful Stories
By Epicurus
I donated $1 to breast cancer research at the Safeway at 15th Ave E and E John on Capitol Hill. I was allowed to choose a book from a big pile on a table just outside the checkers. I saw this and thought, why not?
I was pulled into these very personal, very tight, and infinitely wise stories and the lives they exposed the minute I opened the book. A few days later I finished it, loaned it to a friend, and set about getting a copy of Ms. Glickfeld's more recent work, Swimming Toward the Ocean. I suppose all art may have some flaws, but I haven't noticed any in Carols Glickfeld's work!
I'll also review Swimming Toward the Ocean when I finish it. I feel so fortunate to have found these works.

Really funny book!
By Jade
From the point of view of a girl who grew up as a CODA, this book is spectacular. For anyone even a little bit familiar with Deaf culture, or those looking to find out what it would be like to grow up with Deaf parents, this is an interesting look into this woman's life. There is some sadness, as there is an extreme excess of confusion and lack of communication in the particular household that this story looks at. However, it is also very very funny, as this young girl strives to understand the world around her. Read it! :)

A Late Encounter with the Civil War (Mercer University Lamar Memorial Lectures Ser.), by Michael Kreyling

In A Late Encounter with the Civil War, Michael Kreyling confronts the changing nature of our relationship to the anniversary of the war that nearly split the United States. When significant anniversaries arrive in the histories of groups such as families, businesses, or nations, their members set aside time to formally remember their shared past. This phenomenon―this social or collective memory―reveals as much about a group’s sense of place in the present as it does about the events of the past. So it is with the Civil War.

As a nation, we have formally remembered two Civil War anniversaries, the 50th and 100th. We are now in the complicated process of remembering the war for a third time. Kreyling reminds us that we were a different “we” for each of the earlier commemorations, and that “we” are certainly different now, and not only because the president in office for the 150th anniversary represents a member of the race for whose emancipation from slavery the war was waged.

These essays explore the conscious and unconscious mechanisms by which each era has staged, written, and thought about the meaning of the Civil War. Kreyling engages the not-quite-conscious agendas at work in the rituals of remembering through fiction, film, graphic novels, and other forms of expression. Each cultural example wrestles with the current burden of remembering: What are we attempting to do with a memory that, to many, seems irrelevant or so far in the past as to be almost irretrievable?

Review
Theoretically nuanced and brilliantly written, A Late Encounter with the Civil War is a provocative account of how Americans never remember the same Civil War twice. Kreyling’s study is essential reading for anyone interested in the complex, even anxious, interplay of history and memory. (Scott Romine author of The Real South: Southern Narrative in the Age of Cultural Reproduction)

Michael Kreyling offers a probing examination of the complex ways Americans have grappled with the memory and meaning of the Civil War. . . . [N]o scholar with an interest in the war or the contours of American historical memory can afford to miss an encounter with this book. (Brian Matthew Jordan Civil War Book Review)

Kreyling’s scrutiny of the counterfactual and historical fiction on the [Civil War] contributes to the burgeoning scholarship on the sesquicentennial by revealing how our present society commemorates America’s bloodiest conflict. (John C. Kennedy American Historian)

Kreyling’s work offers interesting insight into not only the ways the present influences the remembrance of the past but also the importance of literature and film as reflections of the past through the filters of the present. It is a worthwhile read. (Jennifer W. Dickey Journal of Southern History)

Before Scopes: Evangelicalism, Education, and Evolution in Tennessee, 1870-1925, by Charles Israel

The 1925 Tennessee v. John Scopes case―the Scopes Monkey Trial―is one of America's most famous courtroom battles. Until now, however, no one has considered at length why the sensational, divisive trial of a public high school science teacher indicted for teaching evolution took place where, and when, it did.

This study ranges over the fifty years preceding the trial to examine intertwined attitudes toward schooling and faith held by Tennessee's politically dominant white evangelical Protestants. Those decades saw accelerating social and economic change in the South, writes Charles A. Israel. Education, long the province of family and community, grew ever more centralized, professionalized, and isolated from the local values that first underpinned it. As Israel tells how parents and church, civic, and political leaders at first opposed public education, then endorsed it, and finally fought to control it, he reveals their deep ambivalence about the intangible costs of progress.

Lessons that Evangelicals took away from failed adult temperance campaigns also prompted them to reexert control over who and what influenced their children. Evangelicals rallied behind a 1915 bill requiring the Bible to be read daily in public schools. The 1925 Butler bill criminalized the teaching of evolution, which had come to symbolize all that was threatening about theological liberalism and materialistic science. The stage for the Scopes trial had been set. Delving deeply into the collective mind of a people in an age of uncertainty, Before Scopes sheds new light on religious belief, ideology, and expression.

Review

Before Scopes is a worthy contribution to southern history. I am very impressed with Israel's research, scholarship, and sophisticated arguments. This should become a standard reference point in works on southern religious and cultural history, standing with recent works by Ted Ownby and Beth Schweiger, among others.

(Paul Harvey author of Freedom's Coming: How Religious Culture Shaped the South from Civil War through Civil Rights)

Through a nuanced historical study of the attitudes of Tennessee Evangelicals to the place of religion in public education, Before Scopes sheds new light on the local context for the state's legendary 1925 antievolution law and the resulting trial of John Scopes. Many of the historical tensions chronicled in this book continue to strain American society and public education today.

(Edward J. Larson author of Summer for the Gods: The Scopes Trial and America's Continuing Debate Over Science and Religion)

Before Scopes is gracefully written and thoroughly researched. . . . This study deserves the attention of all who are interested in the role of religion in public education.

(Journal of the American Academy of Religion)

With the resurgence of evangelicalism in today’s society and its concomitant influence on education, politics, and mores, Before Scopes has relevance to current differences and their repercussions.

(Midwest Book Review)

Israel skillfully contexualizes the Scopes trial and, without neglecting the intellectual conflict involved, clearly demonstrates that the broader and more significant issue was control of public education in a democratic society. Before Scopes complements the growing literature that undermines the portrayal of southern religion as individualistic and otherworldly. It also demonstrates that future studies on fundamentalism in the South would benefits from the type of contextual labor invested in by Israel.

(Journal of Southern History)

Studies such as Israel’s contribute an important historical perspective. . . . While most examinations of the famous Scopes ‘monkey trial’ trace the consequences of that event, Israel has gone back in time to expose social, cultural, religious, and political roots of the Tennessee antievolution law that set the table for the highly publicized legal battles. . . . The author brings a refreshing and much-needed understanding of southern religion to his work.

(Register of Kentucky Historical Society)

Helps illuminate the issues that give the Scopes trial such lasting historiographical value: marjoritarianism, Southern distinctiveness, the rise of fundamentalism, and schooling in a pluralistic society.

(History: Reviews of New Books)

Offers an intriguing look at how a certain set of evangelicals in one southern state conceived of their own path of modernity.

South Carolina Women: Their Lives and Times (Southern Women: Their Lives and Times Ser.), by Marjorie Spruill

The biographical essays in this volume provide new insights into the various ways that South Carolina women asserted themselves in their state and illuminate the tension between tradition and change that defined the South from the Civil War through the Progressive Era. As old rules―including gender conventions that severely constrained southern women―were dramatically bent if not broken, these women carved out new roles for themselves and others.

The volume begins with a profile of Laura Towne and Ellen Murray, who founded the Penn School on St. Helena Island for former slaves. Subsequent essays look at such women as the five Rollin sisters, members of a prominent black family who became passionate advocates for women’s rights during Reconstruction; writer Josephine Pinckney, who helped preserve African American spirituals and explored conflicts between the New and Old South in her essays and novels; and Dr. Matilda Evans, the first African American woman licensed to practice medicine in the state. Intractable racial attitudes often caused women to follow separate but parallel paths, as with Louisa B. Poppenheim and Marion B. Wilkinson. Poppenheim, who was white, and Wilkinson, who was black, were both driving forces in the women’s club movement. Both saw clubs as a way not only to help women and children but also to showcase these positive changes to the wider nation. Yet the two women worked separately, as did the white and black state federations of women’s clubs.

Often mixing deference with daring, these women helped shape their society through such avenues as education, religion, politics, community organizing, history, the arts, science, and medicine. Women in the mid- and late twentieth century would build on their accomplishments.

Review
"South Carolina Women: Their Lives and Times, Volume 2 makes a significant contribution to the body of knowledge about women's lives and work in a quintessentially southern state. Each of the women in this volume is well deserving of study, and together they flesh out a story that scholars have only begun to appreciate piecemeal. Collectively, they present a portrait of energetic and determined women, black and white, who saw needs and injustices in their world and took the responsibility upon themselves to meet those needs and try to right those injustices. Because most of the work on the evolution of women's political and social associations, their work for suffrage, and their impact on women's education and health needs has been focused on the northeastern and New England states, the essays in this volume, focused on black and white southern women, provide a significant addition to this emerging field." --Elisabeth Muhlenfeld, President, Sweet Briar College

"South Carolina Women: Their Lives and Times, Volume 2 brings together distinguished historians who vividly recapture representative black and white South Carolina women. The articles are lively and the editors ground them in deep historical context that belies any notion of a stagnant state from Reconstruction to World War II. Read any one of these and you will want to read all." --Glenda Elizabeth Gilmore, Peter V. and C. Vann Woodward Professor of History, Yale University
