Weaving Alliances with Other Women: Chitimacha Indian Work in the New South (Mercer University Lamar Memorial Lectures Ser.), by Professor

River-cane baskets woven by the Chitimachas of south Louisiana are universally admired for their beauty and workmanship. Recounting friendships that Chitimacha weaver Christine Paul (1874–1946) sustained with two non-Native women at different parts of her life, this book offers a rare vantage point into the lives of American Indians in the segregated South.

Mary Bradford (1869–1954) and Caroline Dormon (1888–1971) were not only friends of Christine Paul; they were also patrons who helped connect Paul and other Chitimacha weavers with buyers for their work. Daniel H. Usner uses Paul’s letters to Bradford and Dormon to reveal how Indian women, as mediators between their own communities and surrounding outsiders, often drew on accumulated authority and experience in multicultural negotiation to forge new relationships with non-Indian women.

Bradford’s initial interest in Paul was philanthropic, while Dormon’s was anthropological. Both certainly admired the artistry of Chitimacha baskets. For her part, Paul saw in Bradford and Dormon opportunities to promote her basketry tradition and expand a network of outsiders sympathetic to her tribe’s vulnerability on many fronts. As Usner explores these friendships, he touches on a range of factors that may have shaped them, including class differences, racial attitudes, and shared ideals of womanhood. The result is an engaging story of American Indian livelihood, identity, and self-determination.

Beatrice Cenci (American University Studies), by Irene Musillo Mitchell

Roman noblewoman Beatrice Cenci (1577-99), associated in history and literature with the crimes of parricide and incest, was a victim of corrupt late Renaissance Rome and an infamous father. This absorbing narrative set in sixteenth-century Rome recounts the turbulent vicissitudes of her wealthy family and her own ill-fated destiny, thrusting her into imprisonment in a castle, illicit love, incest or alleged incest, and murder. Featured are the grim procedures of the Roman court and the nine-month trial of the Cenci - one of the most celebrated trials of the period, with a famous defense based on the charge of incest. Painters, musicians, film directors, and writers from Shelley and Stendhal to Melville and Hawthorne were inspired by Beatrice's tragic story, uncannily relevant to our time. Her victimization, efforts to free herself, and revenge make up a scenario repeated through the centuries.

Review
-...Now, at long last, Irene Musillo Mitchell replies to the Romantic poet not only as a historian but also, and more importantly, as a person of great sensitivity. Through her research she has been able to collate, and even update, the documentation of writers such as Guerrazzi, Ricci, Bertolotti, and Valentini-Bacchiani, and through her sensitivity she has given a new perspective to the tragic story of the twenty-two year old Beatrice Cenci, beheaded for parricide in 1599, in the immediate aftermath of the Italian Renaissance. Truly we needed this book, especially here in America.- (Joseph Tusiani, Author of 'The Fifth Season' and 'The Complete Poems of Michelangelo')"

From the Author
From the Author

Throughout the nineteenth century and early twentieth, the story of Beatrice Cenci (1577-99) was famous in Europe as well as in America, as illustrated in the writings of Melville and Hawthorne. Guido Renis alleged portrait of Beatrice once one of the most popular paintings in Rome might well have hung on a living room wall. Now, Beatrice, a victimized woman, emerges anew with telling social significance mid today's heightened concern for abused women. Also emerging is a vivid description of Rome in the late Renaissance, the setting of Beatrice's tragic life. Whether for women's studies or Italian studies, or courses in history and literature, "Beatrice Cenci" will sit well on the college curriculum. In libraries, it is an essential update of Corrado Ricci's classic 1923 "Beatrice Cenci."

Relevant reading for the 21st century
By rebecca baker
Irene Musillo Mitchell's historical account of "Beatrice Cenci" brings to life the suffering and tragedy that women experienced in 16th-century Italy. The details are often graphic and disturbing, but necessary. The complexity of the human and inhuman relationships keep the reader riveted throughout the book. Daily, we hear of similar events, near and far, to the ones that occurred during Beatrice Cenci's life, then tears come to those who feel this pain and pray of justice...while most watch for entertainment, then sleep in silence. Entrepreneurs in the Southern Upcountry: Commercial Culture in Spartanburg, South Carolina, 1845-1880, by Bruce Eelman

In Entrepreneurs in the Southern Upcountry, Bruce W. Eelman follows the evolution of an entrepreneurial culture in a nineteenth-century southern community outside the plantation belt. Counter to the view that the Civil War and Reconstruction alone brought social and economic revolution to the South, Eelman finds that antebellum Spartanburg businessmen advocated a comprehensive vision for modernizing their region. Although their plans were forward looking, they still supported slavery and racial segregation.

By the 1840s, Spartanburg merchants, manufacturers, lawyers, and other professionals were looking to capitalize on the area’s natural resources by promoting iron and textile mills and a network of rail lines. Recognizing that cultural change had to accompany material change, these businessmen also worked to reshape legal and educational institutions. Their prewar success was limited, largely due to lowcountry planters’ political power. However, their modernizing spirit would serve as an important foundation for postwar development.

Although the Civil War brought unprecedented trauma to the Spartanburg community, the modernizing merchants, industrialists, and lawyers strengthened their political and social clout in the aftermath. As a result, much of the modernizing blueprint of the 1850s was realized in the 1870s. Eelman finds that Spartanburg’s modernizers slowed legal and educational reform only when its implementation seemed likely to empower African Americans.

Review

With expert analysis of the economy and culture of the South Carolina Upcountry, Eelman's study demonstrates the continued importance of local history while encouraging readers to reconsider broader questions. His study illuminates the significant changes that urban southern communities underwent in the middle of the nineteenth century, as well as the middle-class professional and commercial interests these communities harbored. Scholars interested in the economic and social development of the South will need to read this volume.

(Jonathan Wells author of The Origins of the Southern Middle Class, 1800-1861)

Entrepreneurs in the Southern Upcountry, well written and impressively researched, advances an important argument about continuity in the mid-nineteenth-century South's outlook on capitalism and social progress. It will find a ready audience among historians interested in the South, the nineteenth century, and the U.S. economy. Eelman's work will provoke discussion, which is what good history should do.

(Frank Towers author of The Urban South and the Coming of the Civil War)

In this well-researched case study, Eelman makes an important contribution to the historiography of the nineteenth-century South. If he has not relegated Genovese or Woodward to the dustbin of history, he has demonstrated that parts of their arguments need adjustment.

(Peter A. Coclanis Journal of Interdisciplinary History)

Like nearly all important books, Eelman's study of entrepreneurial culture in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, defies easy classification. . . . This is a complex and dense―in the best possible sense―book that engages in a number of important historical debates, and it should attract attention from many segments of the profession.

(H-Southern-Industry)

Well-argued and linked to broad historical issues . . . a model community study that deserves a wide readership.

(Journal of American History)

Recent, compelling works by Mark Smith, Chad Morgan, and Jonathan Daniel Wells have revealed tremendous economic, social, and even political antecedents for the postwar South in its formative antebellum years. Eelman's book builds upon this literature to establish quite convincingly how so much that seemed new or 'modern' in the postwar South originated decades before secession.

(American Historical Review)

Women, Gender, and Terrorism (Studies in Security and International Affairs Ser.)From University of Georgia Press

In the last decade the world has witnessed a rise in women’s participation in terrorism. Women, Gender, and Terrorism explores women’s relationship with terrorism, with a keen eye on the political, gender, racial, and cultural dynamics of the contemporary world.

Throughout most of the twentieth century, it was rare to hear about women terrorists. In the new millennium, however, women have increasingly taken active roles in carrying out suicide bombings, hijacking airplanes, and taking hostages in such places as Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Lebanon, and Chechnya. These women terrorists have been the subject of a substantial amount of media and scholarly attention, but the analysis of women, gender, and terrorism has been sparse and riddled with stereotypical thinking about women’s capabilities and motivations.

In the first section of this volume, contributors offer an overview of women’s participation in and relationships with contemporary terrorism, and a historical chapter traces their involvement in the politics and conflicts of Islamic societies. The next section includes empirical and theoretical analysis of terrorist movements in Chechnya, Kashmir, Palestine, and Sri Lanka. The third section turns to women’s involvement in al Qaeda and includes critical interrogations of the gendered media and the scholarly presentations of those women. The conclusion offers ways to further explore the subject of gender and terrorism based on the contributions made to the volume.

Contributors to Women, Gender, and Terrorism expand our understanding of terrorism, one of the most troubling and complicated facets of the modern world.

Review

An important book featuring the leading experts in the field, Women, Gender, and Terrorism goes beyond the rhetoric, stereotypes, and news headlines to provide the most comprehensive account of female militants available. With diverse case studies, unique first-person interviews, and thoughtful feminist analysis, the authors of this volume offer a wealth of information on the motivations, strategies, and impacts of female militants. This work disrupts several age-old stereotypes associated with ‘what women do’ during war and social movements including the idea of the inherently peaceful and nurturing woman, and the assumption of females as perpetual victims of male violence. Women, Gender, and Terrorism is undeniably groundbreaking, making an invaluable contribution to the literature on war, militarism, and terrorism.

(Megan MacKenzie Department of Government and International Relations, University of Sydney and Women and Public Policy Program, Harvard University)

Laura Sjoberg, Caron Gentry and their deeply informed contributors dismantle the exoticized stereotype of the woman terrorist by revealing the complex dynamics between women, ideas about femininity, insurgencies and violence. This provocative collection will be of genuine value to anyone trying to be smart about gender, conflict, media and political mobilization.

(Cynthia Enloe author of Nimo's War, Emma's War: Making Feminist Sense of the Iraq War)

‘Women, Gender, and Terrorism’ discusses the role of women and gender in the twenty first century, offering a unique view of the endeavor and what it speaks of in societies which may still strongly oppress women. . . .[it] is a strong addition to any collection focusing on women’s studies or social issues in general.

(Midwest Book Review)

[Women, Gender, and Terrorism] deserves ongoing praise and recommendation for its ground-breaking survey pairing case studies and first-person interviews with feminist analysis to consider the motivations, strategies and impact of female militants around the world. It offers a fine assessment of women’s roles in war, terrorism and world military struggles, and features leading experts in the field who provide a fine wide-reaching survey that refutes common stereotypes of women’s involvement in social movements.

Terrorism studies

This book was assigned in one of my classes and it has a pretty good insight into women who are involved in terrorist organizations, though it attempts to rid itself of stereotyping women it on occasion falls into stereotyping. Besides the occasional gender bias it is very informative

Silent Violence: Food, Famine, and Peasantry in Northern Nigeria (Geographies of Justice and Social Transformation Ser.), by Michael Watts

Why do famines occur and how have their effects changed through time? Why are those who produce food so often the casualties of famines? Looking at the food crisis that struck the West African Sahel during the 1970s, Michael J. Watts examines the relationships between famine, climate, and political economy.

Through a longue durée history and a detailed village study Watts argues that famines are socially produced and that the market is as fickle and incalculable as the weather. Droughts are natural occurrences, matters of climatic change, but famines expose the inner workings of society, politics, and markets. His analysis moves from household and individual farming practices in the face of climatic variability to the incorporation of African peasants into the global circuits of capitalism in the colonial and postcolonial periods.

Silent Violence powerfully combines a case study of food crises in Africa with an analysis of the way capitalism developed in northern Nigeria and how peasants struggle to maintain rural livelihoods. As the West African Sahel confronts another food crisis and continuing food insecurity for millions of peasants, Silent Violence speaks in a compelling way to contemporary agrarian dynamics, food provisioning systems, and the plight of the African poor.

Review

This book is simply a classic. If you want to understand the intellectual guts of political ecology, or the conceptual pulse of food crises, this is the place to go.

(Neil Smith City University of New York)

Silent Violence is truly the seminal work of political ecology― synthesizing political economy and environmental history―to which my own writing owes an enormous debt. A conceptual masterpiece, it also remains―tragically―an all-too-accurate account of Nigeria’s torments.

(Mike Davis author of Late Victorian Holocausts: El Niño Famines and the Making of the Third World)

A big book in every sense―historically grounded, geographically sensitive and extraordinarily humane. . . . In many ways it remains a model of intelligent and discerning scholarship: meticulously researched, painstakingly referenced, and beautifully written.

(Progress in Human Geography)

[An] important book.

(Amartya Sen New York Times)

Exploratory studies show how the theory of socioemotional bonds (attachment) casts new light on seemingly disparate adult disturbances often recognized but not well understood by clinicians. These include father-daughter incest, battered women, child abusing mothers, bereaved mates, prostitutes, and abused and neglected adolescents.
Findings provide insights that readily make intuitive sense to clinicians and all that work synergistically with family systems object-relations, and psychodynamic orientations.

Expanding on Seybold's pioneering 1951 analysis of Thoreau's classicism, this book argues that Thoreau was a Platonist. Viewing Thoreau as a Platonist deepens our understanding of, and removes alleged contradictions in, his theism, his vegetarianism, and the function of language in his thought.

...'Thoreau the Platonist' is a wonderfully welcome contribution from someone who is a stimulating philosopher... Thoreau would be pleased.» (Owen W. Gilman, Jr. Ph.D., Saint Joseph's University).

The War on Poverty: A New Grassroots History, 1964-1980From Brand: University of Georgia Press

Lyndon Johnson’s War on Poverty has long been portrayed as the most potent symbol of all that is wrong with big government. Conservatives deride the War on Poverty for corruption and the creation of “poverty pimps,” and even liberals carefully distance themselves from it. Examining the long War on Poverty from the 1960s onward, this book makes a controversial argument that the programs were in many ways a success, reducing poverty rates and weaving a social safety net that has proven as enduring as programs that came out of the New Deal.

The War on Poverty also transformed American politics from the grass roots up, mobilizing poor people across the nation. Blacks in crumbling cities, rural whites in Appalachia, Cherokees in Oklahoma, Puerto Ricans in the Bronx, migrant Mexican farmworkers, and Chinese immigrants from New York to California built social programs based on Johnson’s vision of a greater, more just society. Contributors to this volume chronicle these vibrant and largely unknown histories while not shying away from the flaws and failings of the movement―including inadequate funding, co-optation by local political elites, and blindness to the reality that mothers and their children made up most of the poor.

In the twenty-first century, when one in seven Americans receives food stamps and community health centers are the largest primary care system in the nation, the War on Poverty is as relevant as ever. This book helps us to understand the turbulent era out of which it emerged and why it remains so controversial to this day.

Review

Makes an extremely significant intervention into several literatures―on social movements, on domestic policy, and on local government and power structures. It shares both a strong point of view and a clear commitment not to oversimplify or romanticize the grassroots activism it depicts, and this combination makes it convincing and, at times, gripping. The fact that the book treats civil rights activism among Mexican Americans, Indians, and Asian Americans is particularly attractive.

(Linda Gordon winner of the Bancroft Prize for Dorothea Lange: A Life Beyond Limits)

The essays in this exciting collection bring to life the War on Poverty at the grassroots, where it was really fought. They emphasize the interpenetration of the poverty war and civil rights movement and highlight the energy unleashed by the commitment to the 'maximum feasible participation' of the poor. Annelise Orleck’s introduction provides one of the best overviews of the War on Poverty ever written, and her stunning conclusion offers a measured, reasoned defense of the program’s achievements and legacy―a message needed now more than ever.

(Michael B. Katz University of Pennsylvania)

Contributors to the volume chronicle vibrant and largely unknown histories while not shying away from the flaws and failings of the movement. . . .This book helps readers to understand the turbulent era out of which it emerged and why it remains so controversial to this day.

(Bob Edmonds McCormick Messenger)

The War on Poverty: A New Grassroots History, 1964-1980 offers a powerful collection key to any social issues collection and covers poverty and civil rights battles at the grassroots level. . .provides a powerful survey of the movement Johnson began. Very highly recommended!

(Midwest Book Review)

[The War on Poverty] is history, not economic or political theory, and its power comes from its empirical approach . . . The stories contained in this volume of how its battles have been lost and won can help us see how it might be fought more successfully in the future.

(Duncan Richter Studies in American Culture)

[A]s these essays collectively argue that the War on Poverty was more successful than historians―and certainly most Americans―have commonly recognized, [The War on Poverty] makes a valuable and insightful contribution.

(Sean P. Cunningham Southwestern Historical Quarterly)

The Spirit of Japanese Law (The Spirit of the Laws Ser.), by John Haley

The Spirit of Japanese Law focuses on the century following the Meiji Constitution, Japan's initial reception of continental European law. As John Owen Haley traces the features of contemporary Japanese law and its principal actors, distinctive patterns emerge. Of these none is more ubiquitous than what he refers to as the law's "communitarian orientation."

While most westerners may view judges as Japanese law's least significant actors, Haley argues that they have the last word because their interpretations of constitution and codes define the authority and powers they and others hold. Based on a "sense of society," the judiciary confirms bonds of village, family, and firm, and "abuse of rights" and "good faith" similarly affirms community. The Spirit of Japanese Law concludes with constitutional cases that help explain the endurance of community in contemporary Japan.

Joel Chandler Harris: A Biography and Critical Study (Brown Thrasher Books Ser.), by R. Bickley Jr.

This biography and critical study reconstructs Harris's life and career from his humble origins as an illegitimate child and plantation-newspaper printer's devil through his years in Macon, Forsyth, Savannah, and Atlanta. When Harris died in 1908, his national and international popularity rivaled his friend Mark Twain's. A psychologically complex person, Harris became an accomplished Southern local colorist who left multiple legacies as an American humorist, folklorist, New South journalist, children's writer, and author. He helped make the Old South New.

Harris's Uncle Remus trickster tales derive primarily from transplanted Senegambian African folklore and are rhetorically and sociologically complex representations of the often predatory world of Old South slave life―where survival depends on trickery, wit, and will pitted against the brute strength of overseers and masters. Controversial today because he was a white man retelling black folk narratives, Harris nevertheless helped preserve the trickster tale-cycle and promote black folk-tale collecting, generally; hundreds of scholars and linguists have studied his works. Harris also made Brer Rabbit, the tar baby, and the briar patch popular-culture icons, and his highly believable animal characters and dialogues influenced the techniques of Rudyard Kipling, A. A. Milne, Beatrix Potter, E. B. White, and other children's authors. Finally, Harris's poor white and African American characters and narratives have left their mark on writers from his time to our times―from Twain to Zora Neale Hurston, William Faulkner, Flannery O'Connor, Ralph Ellison, and Toni Morrison.

Review

Anyone interested in southern literature should be grateful for the reissue of Joel Chandler Harris. . . . Bickley has done an admirable job of bringing 'the whole Joel Chandler Harris into view.'

(Southern Literary Journal)

Bickley's approach and his results provide a new understanding of one of Georgia's most important late-nineteenth century personalities, and fully deserves this new paperback edition.

(Georgia Historical Quarterly)

One of the foremost Harris scholars in the country . . . confirms Harris' considerable impact on American literary and popular culture.

(The Nation)

About the Author
R. Bruce Bickley, Jr., is Griffith T. Pugh Professor of English, Emeritus, Florida State University. His books include "The Method of Melville's Short Fiction," two annotated bibliographies of Harris scholarship, and, coedited with John T. Bickley, "Nights with Uncle Remus."

A scholarly perspective
By W. Bloom
I purchased this book along with "The Complete Tales of Uncle Remus." Together, they provide a reasonably complete basis for a thorough appreciation of the seminal work of this influential southern reconstruction folklorist, who obviously informed Twain's Jim in "Huckleberry Finn" and, in my opinion, is far too easily dismissed, today, as being politically incorrect.

The Genius of an American Hero
By Dre Sulley
As a literary genius, Joel Chandler Harris gripped the heart of America with his stories of Uncle Remus and Br'er Rabbit. He did not do so with sordid details on horrific race tension, or sad tales of the Reconstruction post Civil War era in the Southern United States. Instead, he portrayed a World of love, tolerance, laughter, unity, and most of all racial integration in a time these ideas were controversial and brave. Loving the plantation life was created from his own life experience on a plantation with slaves who accepted and loved him for who he was while he portrayed his peers as intolerant and often cruel. Read this book...read the history...get the facts. This guy was a true American hero. He stood up for what was right...and maybe we can all learn from him. Slavery was wrong. We all know it. However, this author was lucky enough to encounter amazing people who were slaves who rescued him from his troublesome childhood. From African Americans using oral tradition story telling of folk stories and songs, he immortalized and extracted the beauty and history of people whose traditions may have otherwise been ignored or forgotten. Through this author, a brilliant story telling tradition from imaginative, brave, and amazing people lives on.
