About the Author
JACQUELIN GORMAN is the author of The Seeing Glass, a memoir. She grew up in a family of physicians in the shadow of Johns Hopkins Hospital and spent a great deal of time in Maryland’s hospitals as a girl. She has practiced as a health-care lawyer in Los Angeles and as a hospital chaplain, and she is currently the program director at the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Her stories have appeared in Slake Magazine, Kenyon Review, ScreamOnline, The Journal, and Reader’s Digest.

Most insightful look inside the emotions of death since Kubler-Ross

It is misleading to call this a collection of short stories(although it is), for the main characters and the setting remain the same throughout. It's like looking through a window and watching the changing cast opening up their deepest emotions and laying them bare in an intensely intimate setting. The situations portrayed are as gut-wrenching as they are inspirational, told with a storyteller's flair for engaging the reader.

Although this compelling collection of interwoven short stories is fiction, it is imbued with the in-depth knowledge of the author's years as a hospital chaplain and legal counsel for a major medical center, as well as her work in the non-profit world aiding the mentally ill, their families and the homeless.

There is good reason for this work to have won the current national competition for the University of Georgia Press' Flannery O'Connor Award for short fiction and to have been nominated for the National Book Award. I highly recommend the book, both as an engaging read, and as a self-exploration of our own emotional connection to how we experience death and dying of one close to us.

Dealing with death compassionately, through stories.

We are sheltered from death, most of us, and hence unready to face it and cope with it. This book offers the perspective of a hospital chaplain who deals with death one way or another every day. The viewing room is the set-aside, sanitized room where family members are taken to view their dead for the last time. Only the hospital chaplains and the janitorial staff have keys to the viewing room. What do you think takes place there? Gorman offers nine stories, each different but all both challenging and full of beauty. I highly recommend this book to anyone who works in the business of caring for other people, whether religion, healthcare, or just making it through life.

An Inspiring Fictional Account of Real Life Stories of Death

This book of linked stories has rightfully won the prestigious Flannery O'Connor Short Fiction Award for 2013. It has also been nominated for a National Book Award. I can promise you that you have never read anything like it. The stories, based upon "the viewing room" within a hospital where families of the deceased may gather to pay their last respects, are derived from the author's personal experience as a hospital chaplain. They are searing and poignant, full of wisdom and compassion, rising to literary heights only achieved by a consummate writer. Be prepared. They are sometimes painful, but always rewarding.

About the Author
A journalist for the "Vancouver Observer," Alfred DePew has taught at the Universities of Vermont and New Hampshire, the Maine College of Art, the Salt Center for Documentary Studies, and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. He has lead creativity and leadership workshops throughout the U.S. and Canada. In 2008, he joined the faculty at the Center for Right Relationship, where he teaches organization and relationship systems coaching. In his private practice, he works with executive directors, physicians, school administrators, couples, artists, writers, and clergy in deepening their awareness, managing change and conflict, broadening their range, achieving personal and creative objectives, and realizing their leadership potential.

Definitely a unique mix of themes!

First, a rundown of the stories:

1. "Let Me Tell You How I Met My First Husband, The Clown" -- A driven, goal-oriented woman falls in love with a clown (that's not a knock on his character, he's literally a professional clown).

2. "Stanley" -- Told in 2nd person POV (as in "you"), where the reader is asked to imagine themselves on a blind date who just seems too perfect, you expect something to be majorly wrong with him. The night turns into a regrettable one night stand.

3. "Voici! Henri" -- A glimpse into a moment in the life of a gay couple, Henri's boyfriend assumes Henri is about to dump him.

4. "Rita & Maxine" -- A tense working relationship between struggling theater director Rita and Maxine, an established stage actress who has recently come back home to the United States.

5. "Bettina In Love" -- a dancer / choreographer is struggling with having intense feelings for a male dancer, who may possibly be homosexual

6. "For If He Left Robert" -- a gay man contemplates leaving his lover while said lover sleeps

7. "Hurley" -- Ohhh, Hurley is a weird, weird dude. The story opens with him taking a suitcase into a porn shop, telling the staff that there's a bomb inside the suitcase. They offer him whatever he wants if he just doesn't detonate the bomb. Hurley contemplates using same tactic at grocery store. In between the two establishments, he has some bizarre run-ins with people he meets on the street. In the evenings, he likes to crash on his cot @ the YMCA, work on his scrapbook of newspaper articles of the most gruesome crimes and tragedies.

8. "What Do You Mean What Am I Doing?" -- one of my favorites in the collection, a hilarious first person narrative of someone snapping at someone else over this other person continually breaking the narrator's concentration.

9. "Ralph & Larry" -- The story of a friendship between a partially deaf, BDSM-lovin' homosexual and an asexual man struggling with binge eating disorder

10. "Beauty and the Beast" -- A unique, slightly bizarre take on the classic fairytale. Here, DePew strips the Beast of most of the human-like qualities he's typically given while also placing Belle & Beast in a sort of dystopian, futuristic setting around the castle. A little odd at first but there was something to it I ended up really liking.

11. "Florence Wease" -- A simple story regarding the passage of time over the course of the lives of two spinster sisters; starts in early 20th century moving over mid-late century.

12. "At Home With The Pelletiers" -- Teen Howard Pelletier's older brother Walter has just come home from Vietnam. Howard instantly sees that the brother he gets back is not the same one who left, Howard is trying to make the best of his brother's behavioral changes but is undoubtedly uneasy at times, unsure of how to move around Walter without setting him off.

Overall thoughts: As is often the case with short story collections, some of these I really loved, some were more just meh, some really had me scratching my head and deciding nope, not my thing. In general though, I like the variation of the stories and I do like DePew's writing style here, haven't read anything by him previously. A quick read of a collection that you can easily take a story or two at a time when you just need one of those brief breather moments during the otherwise hectic rush of the daily grind. I would say this would be a good little intro to people just wanting to dip their toes into short story fiction, as there's just enough quirkiness here to keep things interesting but it's not so out there that people new to the genre would be scared off.

Excellent collection of short stories

Read this when it came out and was delighted to see it in softcover so I can recommend it to others to add to their collections!
Depew has a nice way with fringe-y characters who you can still identify with and feel for even in just a few pages. And he infuses enough humor to keep from falling into despair. And some of the titles are great like ``Let Me Tell You How I Met My First Husband, the Clown'' which sounds like a set up to a joke but ends up being much more than that.

The author is vulnerable and self-disclosing. The book's word choice and structure are stunning. It's obvious why it won the Flannery O''Connor award. These are as good or better than her best. Thank you, Alfred dePew!

The Best Yet

I've been reading Pynchon since 1967 and following the critical literature sporadically since the mid-1970s. There's no other single volume that ties the title's central themes to other themes in GR so clearly...

That details so well how specific events and movements of the 1960s (e.g. the Free Speech Movement and censorship trials) as well as those of 1945 found their way into the text...

Or that is, like Pynchon himself, so sympathetic to the rebels of the "Counterforce" AND so clear-eyed about their fading prospects.

From now on, this book should be the starting point for GR readers who want to dig deeper.

Required Reading

I've been reading Pynchon criticism since the 1970s, and this is hands down one of the best books on him. The authors successfully show that the materials in Pynchon's war novel "take on a concrete and vivid existence if read in the context with . . . persistent questions of political life during the years Pynchon was writing 'Gravity's Rainbow'" (p. 200), such as books by Fromm, Marcuse, Brown, Fanon, and others, along with the underground press, FBI surveillance, and Supreme Court decisions. This background is necessary "to tease the politics out of scenes in 'Gravity's Rainbow' that may wrongly seem, forty years after their writing, to be merely farcical" (203). The authors' deep research into these matters shines new light on many dark corners of this novel (and in passing on his other works), and offers new reading strategies for navigating Pynchon's Zone. If your interest in GR extends beyond its surface entertainment value (which is considerable, and enough for some folks), this book is required reading.

I agree with the prior review, that this is a good jumping off point for reading GR, and also you are going to probably feel the same about this book as you are about GR. If this book interests you, then you may want to try GR, and if not, you have saved yourself a lot of reading!

D&F here argues that the book in many ways is a satire on the late 60s, and as we get further and further away from that time, will the book fade away, because not only is the setting of GR becoming more distant (1944-45) but the period it is satirizing is as well? A lot of people don't remember the 60s, including some who were there! When both the time of the book is not familiar, and the late 60's become unfamiliar, does the book itself begin to lose relevance as a satire? I think so. D&F highlights these fading connections to the 60's culture, counter culture, and upheaval.

But this book is worth ordering and reading if you are set on reading GR. It has some helpful notes about how to get through the time jumps forward and backward. Your feeling or interest towards this book will probably reflect your interest and feeling toward GR as a whole.

Kyle has an excellent way of making each poem flow without any unnecessary breaks. His ear for emphasis is outstanding and you never lose sight of what, if any, focus is being portrayed.

Needy is not quite the right description for the characters in Kealey’s strong story collection, winner of the Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction. While they are living on the edge, their powerful sense of self and duty belies their lack of funds, though nothing masks their hardscrabble life. Brother and sister Nate and Merrill appear more than once, working in a grocery store and, later, turning to theft to pay for their father’s medication. Shelby reads the Wright brothers’ diaries while sitting deathwatch for her grandmother. Laika is an assistant camel keeper in the circus. Grady is an assistant groundskeeper for a minor-league ball club. Altar boys Omar and Lewis steal back the stolen boots of a visiting priest. And all display remarkable levels of determination, responsibility, and spine. We see Kealey’s characters mostly in their early years (though a more adult Merrill appears in one story) and can only speculate on what they will be like as adults. His stories have appeared in Best American Nonrequired Reading, Glimmer Train, Story Quarterly, Prairie Schooner, and the San Francisco Chronicle. His nonfiction has appeared in Poets and Writers and The Writer. He received his MFA in creative writing from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he received the Distinguished Teaching Award. A powerful collection from an up-and-coming writer

This collection blew my socks off.

I've read few writers who can pull of quiet intensity like Kealey can. The action of each story is simple--a kid helps his uncle take care of an amateur baseball field, a boy visits his mom who's in prison, two brothers visit the older's girlfriend--but there's so much tension running beneath every moment that these simple actions--cutting hair, swimming in a pond, mowing grass--feel supercharged. Each story is deftly told, and though some of these characters make questionable decisions, they are all treated with empathy.

Simple, powerful, hopeful . . . what can I say? Do yourself a favor and spend the next week reading some first-class stories from a writer who'll be on to the big-time very soon. An easy five out of five for me, and one of the best I've read all year.

Savor this collection!

I read this collection slowly because I wanted to savor it. The scenes in Kealey's stories are so distilled that I spent a lot of time thinking about what must have happened before and after them, and about the possibilities of narrative in general. The whole book had an autumnal feel to me--full of shadows, sudden illuminations, decay, possibilities of death, and huddled pockets of warmth.

"Introduction, or Nobody" sets the September tone immediately, by following a young brother and sister as they wander through a woods and neighborhood, speculating about the lives in the houses around them. The kids are both spooky, and vibrantly alive and familiar. (The boy plays toss and catch with bat, for example, which seems impossible but Kealey is so good that you suspend your disbelief as you read it.) Meanwhile, the tales the boy and girl tell keep adding layers until the whole story is like a giant, glittering leaf pile.

I also loved "Groundskeeping"--it has one of the best endings I've read in a long while. And I nearly jumped out of my seat at one of the plot turns in "Coyotes." Most the collection has appeared in literary magazine titans like Glimmer Train and Indiana Review over the years, but because characters reappear across Kealey's stories, the book feels like more than anthology of his best recent work. It's an overture to youth, imagination, and loss, and it will resonate in my mind for a long time.

Thieves I've Known - Brilliant Short Story Collection

This is a stunning collection. Kealey has the miraculous ability to create a variety of memorable characters while revealing subtle truths about ourselves in the process. I think this is the sign of a great writer. Some of the lives depicted here might be characterized as troubled or difficult, but there is nothing maudlin or sad about the beautiful prose and pitch perfect dialogue he uses to craft these stories. I read a lot of short story collections and this is one of the best I've encountered in a very long time. Impressive, original and unforgettable. Thieves I've Known deserves a wide audience.
