London’s subjects included such peoples as the ragged homeless of London’s East End and the freezing refugees of the Russo-Japanese War, the latter photographed on assignment for the Hearst Syndicate. For Collier’s magazine, London wrote his eyewitness account of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire and returned two weeks later with his camera to document a city in ruins but slowly recovering. During his voyage aboard the Snark, London produced humane images of the South Seas islanders that contrasted dramatically with the period’s stereotypical portraits of indigenous peoples. In 1914 he documented the U.S. invasion of Veracruz during the Mexican Revolution. Although some of his images were used in newspaper and magazine stories and in his books The People of the Abyss and The Cruise of the Snark, the majority have remained unpublished until now.

The volume’s more than two hundred photographs were printed from the original negatives in the California State Parks collection and from the original photographs in albums at the Huntington Library. They are reproduced here as duotones from silver gelatin prints. The general and chapter introductions place London’s photographs in the context of his writings and his times.

London lived during the first true mass-media era, when the use of photographic images ushered in a new way of covering the news. With his discerning eye, London recorded historical moments through the faces and bodies of the people who lived them, creating memorable portraits of individuals whose cultural differences pale beside their common humanity.

Jeanne Campbell Reesman is a professor of English at the University of Texas, San Antonio. She is the author or editor of numerous works on London, including "Jack London's Racial Lives: A Critical Biography." Sara S. She is the co-editor, with Jeanne Reesman, of "Jack London: One Hundred Years a Writer." The unknown photographer

It seems that Jack London was not only an exceptional writer but a first rate photographer as well. He took photographs when he worked for Hearst and as he sailed the South Seas and rode into the Mexican Revolution and witnessed the aftermath of the San Francisco earthquake. Most of the pictures contained in this book were unpublished until now.

There are complete explanations of London as a photographer including an examination of his techniques and the relationship of the photos to his work.
One part which was omitted was how the techniques were developed that differentiated between Jack's photos and those of his wife and friend's.
Each section has a written introduction concerning London's investigations into the subjects covered and the photos are accompanied by quotes from his works to explain them.
Subjects covered are: the poor of London, the Russo-Japanese War, The San Francisco Earthquake, the cruise of the Snark in the South Seas, the voyage of the Dirigo and the Mexican Revolution. There is also a detailed introduction to Jack London and pictures of him.

These black and white photos are not only of interest to those wishing to learn more of London and his work, but also the history of the early 1900's. This is a very instructive and yet attractive work.

Monumental Photographs from an American Legend of Literature

Who knew? Well obviously some people did, because here in a splendid, large scale volume is the 'other aspect' of of legendary novelist Jack London (1876 - 1916): from the vaults of the Huntingon Library and the California State Parks Jeanne Reesman, Sara Hodson, and Philip Adam gathered these fascinating images, coupled them with some of London's writing that accompany the images, and added background information making this book an invaluable missing piece of art history mystery. The 200 some photographs have been 'restored' or reproduced by Philip Adam, an expert in historical photography, in duotones made from Adam's silver gelatin prints. As noted in the preface, 'the majority of the photographs were reproduced from original negatives and the others by copy negatives made from original photographs in London's photo albums at the Huntington Library, as well as collections of the California State Parks.'

What this book contains then are many portraits of various figures from London's brief life (he died at age 40 of kidney failure), but even more interesting are the documentation of the jaunts he made to London, England where he sensitively photographed the poverty stricken homeless, the South Seas Islanders, the devastation that resulted from the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906, scenes form the Mexican Revolution, and the victims of the Russo-Japanese War. As a photojournalist the quality of his informed inspection of sites such as this may make him one of the founders of modern photojournalism.

Though Jack London will always be remembered for his most famous books - The Call of the Wild, White Fang, The Sea-Wolf, The Iron Heel, and Martin Eden - there is adequate commentary in this collection to address the side of London that caused him public problems: he was an active member of the Socialist Party of America and was a racist, speaking of the Asian immigrants as 'the yellow peril', has workers as 'inefficient Italian laborers', etc. Despite these shortcomings Jack London is an important figure of American history, and here for the first time are the images that are as fascinating as his rugged books. 'With his discerning eye, London recorded historical moments through the faces and bodies of the people who lived them, creating memorable portraits of individuals whose cultural differences pale beside their common humanity.' The Cover Says It All

We agree with "wogan" review above. Great review. So what do we have to add?
A personal photojournalistic journey that can stand up to the likes of Kubota, Post Wolcott, McCullin, Koudelka.
Documenting foreign cultures honestly, inconsequentially. The rhythm and indirect balance of some of these shots is quite unbelievable. especially coming from someone we grew up knowing as a master naturalist fiction writer.

Documentations include post-San Fran earthquake, Vera Cruz Mexico, Solomon Islands, Korea. His city of London photos are just beautiful. this book proves another talent which Jack London possessed.

Across Rampart Street from the French Quarter, the Faubourg Tremé neighborhood is arguably the most important location for African American culture in New Orleans. Closely associated with traditional jazz and “second line” parading, Tremé is now the setting for an eponymous television series created by David Simon (best known for his work on The Wire).

Michael Crutcher argues that Tremé’s story is essentially spatial―a story of how neighborhood boundaries are drawn and take on meaning and of how places within neighborhoods are made and unmade by people and politics. Tremé has long been sealed off from more prominent parts of the city, originally by the fortified walls that gave Rampart Street its name, and so has become a refuge for less powerful New Orleanians. This notion of Tremé as a safe haven―the flipside of its reputation as a “neglected” place―has been essential to its role as a cultural incubator, Crutcher argues, from the antebellum slave dances in Congo Square to jazz pickup sessions at Joe’s Cozy Corner.

Tremé takes up a wide range of issues in urban life, including highway construction, gentrification, and the role of public architecture in sustaining collective memory. Equally sensitive both to black-white relations and to differences within the African American community, it is a vivid evocation of one of America’s most distinctive places.

The HBO show captures the intensity of the people living in the Treme parish and the music needs to

New stuff but hard to read for general interest

I read this after seeing it on a War of 1812 bicentennial list. It had a great deal of new information, focussing mostly on the South and how that fit into the larger War of 1812--mostly a subject hardly mentioned in other books. As such it had a great deal of new and interesting material on Florida, New Orleans and the Creek Indians--all topics that usually come into being very late in other histories of the war. I liked the subject and new take but I found it more than a little hard going. It is clearly written for academics, which I am not, with lots of historiography, discussions of other historians and footnotes. That is fine, but I thought it helpful to forewarn general interest readers.

This is an exccellent book, based in real documents information

This book is very descriptive of the events that happened in north Florida during the war of 1812. The book is based on real documents; therefore, its content is real.
Not only give information about the details of the war; but it describes the events that took place during that time, and its consequences, as well the ocupations of the citizens, and it give some of their names.
A map of Old Fernandina shows the streets' names.
Because of this book I can visit Fernadina and have an idea where those people lived even though the houses are not longer there.
This is an awesome book for Florida history lovers.

Malin Pereira’s collection of eight interviews with leading contemporary African American poets offers an in-depth look at the cultural and aesthetic perspectives of the post–Black Arts Movement generation.

This volume includes unpublished interviews Pereira conducted with Wanda Coleman, Yusef Komunyakaa, Thylias Moss, Harryette Mullen, Cornelius Eady, and Elizabeth Alexander, as well as conversations with Rita Dove and Cyrus Cassells previously in print. Largely published since 1980, each of these poets has at least four books. Their influence on new generations of poets has been wide-reaching.

The work of this group, says Pereira, is a departure from the previous generation’s proscriptive manifestos in favor of more inclusive voices, perspectives, and techniques. Although these poets reject a rigid adherence to a specific black aesthetic, their work just as effectively probes racism, stereotyping, and racial politics. Unlike Amiri Baraka’s claim in “Home” that he becomes blacker and blacker, positioning race as a defining essence, these poets imagine a plurality of ideas about the relationship between blackness and black poetry. They question the idea of an established literary canon defining black literature. For these poets, Pereira says, the idea of “home” is found both in black poetry circles and in the wider transnational community of literature.

Too Bad There Isn't More Risk Here

While this collection of essays is pretty expansive, covering most of the major African American poets over the past few decades, there is little here that couldn't be found elsewhere. By far Wanda Coleman's interview was the most interesting, but this is likely because it was the most provocative. The one essay where the questions and answers didn't appear, if not scripted, ready made. There are endless opportunities to say something thought provoking here, and unfortunately few seem to have been taken. Which is not to say this isn't a good collection for someone unfamiliar with the writings of the author's collected. But if one has read several essays with Yusef Komunyakaa, or Rita Dove, or Elizabeth Alexander or Cornelius Eady, little will be revealed here. That, in a way, is unfortunate, as there is always so much these brilliant writers can say.

A panaramic view of the Civil War's ruination

According to the Civil War Trust, the ACW cost 625,000 lives (some estimates are significantly higher) – nearly as many American soldiers as died in all the other wars in which this country has fought combined – and was the largest and most destructive conflict in the Western world between the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815 and the onset of World War I in 1914. Ms. Nelson goes into detail.

Megan Kate Nelson is a lecturer in history and literature at Harvard University. She is the author of Trembling Earth: A Cultural History of the Okefenokee Swamp. What she presents here is a panoramic view of the extent of the Civil War’s ruination and its effect on us as a people.

The ACW was not just a political upheaval. It was a social, environmental, and social upheaval of the first order, as well. Its violent nature not only took hundreds of thousands of lives – almost 2% of the total 1860 resident population of some 31,443,000 (US Census Bureau) – and many, many more wounded (many grievously and long lastingly), its devastation extended to cities and villages, industrial and transportation infrastructure, farms and livestock, fields and forests and waterways, and, most importantly, peoples’ sense of themselves – their realities, relationships, aspirations, and futures.

The war, particularly in the South, touched everyone. It was a shared experience, yet “Americans read the ruins in different ways depending on who they were, where they lived, the type of object destroyed, the moment in time, and who had done the destroying.” Ms. Nelson elaborates: “Nevertheless, northerners and southerners reacted in similar or even identical ways to wartime ruination. Therein lies one of the ironies of the war’s ruin narrative…its participants found common ground in their consideration of the costs.” And it is these narratives and descriptions that she captures and shares with us.

The book is divided into four broad chapters, each dealing with separate but entwined categories of ruin: cities, houses, trees, and people. War unmakes and remakes the landscape and society, and so these categories describe ephemeral ruin. As she puts it: “Within a generation of their production, most of them had disappeared from the American landscape. City buildings and homes were rebuilt or their materials were repurposed as southerners got on with the work of literal reconstruction. The acres of stumps and tree shards that soldiers created on the march, in camp, and in battle grew over with successive species. The men who fought lived the longest; veteran amputees survived into the twentieth century, but then they, too, were gone. What are left are merely traces, not ruins: stone foundations, a lone chimney here or there, grassy mounds marking former earthworks, fragments of bone in a medical cabinet.”

The book doesn’t have the fast-paced flow of a battle narrative, but it is quite readable. Relying heavily on period letters, literature, news media, drawings, and cartoons, it is a solid work that opens the door for many of us to a different way of looking at the ACW. It is a valuable read for anyone, seasoned or novice, interested in the Civil War and its cultural significance. I highly recommend it.

A depressing, but necessary, read

Ms. Nelson's book is a much-needed reminder of the costs of war, in general, and of the huge and tragic effects of the American Civil War. Among its many strengths, the book provides a compelling look at the destruction of Columbia, South Carolina by troops under General William T. Sherman (and thus showed how he lied in disclaiming that he and they were mainly responsible). The author also describes the burning of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, which was in retaliation for the depredations of Union General David Hunter in the Shenandoah Valley. It could be said that she let General Phil Sheridan off easy, but with so much ruin across the nation, many incidents would have to be omitted due to constraints of space. This is a work for everyone interested in the Civil War, in our country's history, or in the terrible impact of wars on people and places.
