Accumulating Insecurity: Violence and Dispossession in the Making of Everyday Life (Geographies of Justice and Social Transformation Ser.)

Accumulating Insecurity examines the relationship between two vitally important contemporary phenomena: a fixation on security that justifies global military engagements and the militarization of civilian life, and the dramatic increase in day-to-day insecurity associated with contemporary crises in health care, housing, incarceration, personal debt, and unemployment.

Contributors to the volume explore how violence is used to maintain conditions for accumulating capital. Across world regions violence is manifested in the increasingly strained, often terrifying, circumstances in which people struggle to socially reproduce themselves. Security is often sought through armaments and containment, which can lead to the impoverishment rather than the nourishment of laboring bodies. Under increasingly precarious conditions, governments oversee the movements of people, rather than scrutinize and regulate the highly volatile movements of capital. They often do so through practices that condone dispossession in the name of economic and political security.

Other Souths: Diversity and Difference in the U.S. South, Reconstruction to PresentFrom Brand: University of Georgia Press

Other Souths collects fifteen innovative essays that place issues of race, class, gender, ethnicity, and sexuality at the center of the narrative of southern history. Using a range of methodologies and approaches, contributing historians provide a fresh perspective to key events and move long-overlooked episodes into prominence.

Pippa Holloway edited the volume using a chronological and event-driven framework with which many students and teachers will be familiar. The book covers well-recognized topics in American history: wars, reform efforts, social movements, and political milestones. Cultural topics are considered as well, including the development of consumer capitalism, the history of rock and roll, and the history of sport. The focus and organization of the essays underscore the value of southern history to the larger national narrative.

Other Souths reveals the history of what may strike some as a surprisingly dynamic and nuanced region―a region better understood by paying closer and more careful attention to its diversity.

Review

This splendid collection captures the South's complex history from Reconstruction to the present. Incorporating race, class, and gender; sexuality, morality, and popular culture; immigration, environmentalism, and peace politics, Other Souths illuminates traditional issues from new and compelling perspectives.

(Nancy A. Hewitt author of Southern Discomfort: Women's Activism in Tampa, Florida)

A useful teaching text and important intellectual piece. . . . From the public political acts of lowcountry freedwomen to the discovery of the real John Henry, the interrogation of suspected lesbian educators, and the Latinization of the southern landscape, Other Souths uncovers the multiple layers of southern politics, rendering obsolete the divide between public and private or between grassroots politics and more formal electoral politics. In the process, the collection offers the possibilities of comparing big questions across time and place.

(Journal of Interdisciplinary History)

The volume prompts a rethinking of the place of the modern South in the nation in a way that the individual articles, when they first appeared, did not. . . . As a whole, the collection confirms that the South has been and remains distinctive in its reactions to federal law but also that southerners have found themselves deeply and inextricably bound to national issues of economic development, social change, and demographic shifts.

(Journal of Southern History)

This is one of the most creative and provocative southern history anthologies ever published. By bringing together the stories of former slaves, Syrian immigrants, World War I draft resisters, environmentalists, opponents of university football, civil rights activists, and New South conservatives (among others), Other Souths challenges almost every accepted truism about postbellum southern society. This book is appropriate for both scholarly and general audiences and will be an indispensable addition to courses in southern history, culture, and social change. Other Souths will set the standard in this field for years to come.

(Paul Ortiz author of Emancipation Betrayed: The Hidden History of Black Organizing and White Violence in Florida from Reconstruction to the Bloody Election of 1920)

Other Souths is an insightful exploration of southern history that serves as both an incredibly helpful companion to existing scholarship and an innovative collection of essays that ask us to reconsider the southern past from new and alternative perspectives. By employing emerging areas of study like environmental policy and urban planning and uncovering obscured histories of the southern past, this collection demonstrates the exciting potential of what lies ahead for the study of the U.S. South.

Decently Interesting To Read

I haven't read the entire book yet, although from the passages I have read, it seems to be rather enlightening and interesting to read. Being from the South, it's intriguing to know some of the places the stories in the book refer to.

Deconstructing Early Childhood Education: Social Justice and Revolution, by Gaile Sloan Cannella

From a critical perspective, some early childhood educators have proposed that the knowledge base used to ground the field actually serves to support the status quo, reinforces prejudices and stereotypes, and ignores the real lives of children. The purpose of this book is to deconstruct early childhood education, identifying and evaluating the themes and forms of discourse that have dominated the field, leading to the construction of specific theories and forms of practice that privilege particular groups of children and adults and oppress others. An alternative avenue for early childhood education is posited that focuses on social justice and human agency.

Review
«Can there be a more important scholar in early childhood education? Gaile Sloan Cannella has indeed reconceptualized the field! No scholar, no student can proceed from this moment on without first grappling with what Dr. Cannella has written in this paradigmatic work. Congratulations to Gaile Cannella and congratulations to the field!» (William F. Pinar, St. Bernard Parish Alumni Endowed Professor, Louisiana State University)
«‘Deconstructing Early Childhood Education: Social Justice and Revolution’ represents an important moment in the larger revolution of childhood studies. Along with a cadre of other pioneers, Cannella refuses to accept traditional notions of child development, the sacrosanct research methods used to study childhood, the portrayal of childhood as a fixed, unchanging entity, or the ‘validated’ educational strategies used to teach young children. At the same time she understands these dynamics; she appreciates the fact that those who advocate the traditional view are typically individuals who have dedicated their lives to making life better for children. As she points out in Chapter 8 of this work, her attempt is not to simply debase the work of childhood educators who came before her. Her effort is to catalyze a critical conversation about the discourse of early childhood in a way that opens to view perspectives that are too often oppressive in their efforts.
Refusing the seduction of specified blueprints for reinvented early childhood education, the author allows for multiple responses to her deconstructive project. As a handbook for early childhood educators dedicated to escaping the webs of power the discipline has successfully spun, ‘Deconstructing Early Childhood Education’ will occupy a central role in the revolution of childhood studies.» (Joe L. Kincheloe, Pennsylvania State University, from the ‘Introduction’)

good ideas, badly written
By A Customer
Sloane Cannella unfortunately doesn't live up to the enticing title of the book. While she makes several crucial arguments, they are lost in repetative convoluted language. My major frustration with the book was that she spends the entire time going on about the subjugation of the knowledge and experience of "younger human beings" and yet does not include their voices in her text. I was left with the question, "How do children feel about all of this?" What I did find useful were the lists of questions and numbered 're-caps' of points she has just discussed. These are more condensed, and less repetative than the actual body of the text. If you're doing research, save your money for another book and get this one from the library. Plus, I really think you can pretty much get all the ideas she talks about in this book by reading "The Policing of Families" by Donzelot, "Other People's Children" by Lisa Delpit, and some Paulo Freire. All of these are better written, easier to understand, and worth purchasing for your permanent library...

Beyond Early Childhood...Solid Food...Not Milk.
By Reginald Williams
If you are a beginner in early childhood, this may not be a book for you.

It's very philosophical and reflective about the big ideas in the field (justice, play, the evolution of childhood, etc.). It's not a practical book, but for anyone who is informed about this discipline, they will find this book a good 1st, 2nd, and 3rd read. The opening chapter, of note, gives an outstanding 2-3 page complete history of theory in early childhood education.

If there are real concerns about how we educate during the early childhood period I'd like to hear them
By Mildred J. Lane
Lots of suppositions but no evidence. If there are real concerns about how we educate during the early childhood period I'd like to hear them, but I want more than just someone's ideas.

The Invention of Ecocide: Agent Orange, Vietnam, and the Scientists Who Changed the Way We Think About the Environment, by David Zierler

As the public increasingly questioned the war in Vietnam, a group of American scientists deeply concerned about the use of Agent Orange and other herbicides started a movement to ban what they called “ecocide.”

David Zierler traces this movement, starting in the 1940s, when weed killer was developed in agricultural circles and theories of counterinsurgency were studied by the military. These two trajectories converged in 1961 with Operation Ranch Hand, the joint U.S.-South Vietnamese mission to use herbicidal warfare as a means to defoliate large areas of enemy territory.

Driven by the idea that humans were altering the world’s ecology for the worse, a group of scientists relentlessly challenged Pentagon assurances of safety, citing possible long-term environmental and health effects. It wasn’t until 1970 that the scientists gained access to sprayed zones confirming that a major ecological disaster had occurred. Their findings convinced the U.S. government to renounce first use of herbicides in future wars and, Zierler argues, fundamentally reoriented thinking about warfare and environmental security in the next forty years.

Incorporating in-depth interviews, unique archival collections, and recently declassified national security documents, Zierler examines the movement to ban ecocide as it played out amid the rise of a global environmental consciousness and growing disillusionment with the containment policies of the cold war era.

Review

David Zierler's The Invention of Ecocide is a compelling book about Agent Orange, its path of destruction, and the unflagging effort of scientists to name a new crime―ecocide. It is an aspect of the war usually referred to only in passing, but Zierler places it center stage in his powerfully written, precisely argued study. The Invention of Ecocide gives readers an entirely new perspective on Vietnam, the possibilities of determined protest, and the dangers that continue to haunt the world. It is, quite simply, a brilliant work of scholarship.

(Marilyn Young author of The Vietnam Wars, 1945-1990)

Absolutely fascinating: rich in detail, massively researched, and skillfully narrated . . . Combining the history of science with that of international affairs, the author skillfully traces the ways in which states made use of scientific discoveries to create ever more destructive weapons―and describes how scientists followed their conscience in seeking to stop such practice.

(Akira Iriye Harvard University)

David Zierler’s important, timely book is a welcome addition to the scholarship on Agent Orange, a glaringly understudied topic. Impressively researched and well written, it should be accessible to a broad readership.

(Edwin A. Martini author of Invisible Enemies: The American War on Vietnam, 1975–2000)

Comprehensive, well-sourced and skillfully arranged, The Invention of Ecocide takes on a subject at which too many books of the war offer only a glance.

(Asia Times)

The book is an intellectually innovative and substantively valuable interdisciplinary contribution; one that I believe advances understanding about the development and utilization of herbicides in Vietnam while telling the story of how a group of American scientists, on the right side of the evidence and, as it turns out, history, tried to prevent the tragic consequences which now envelop generations of Americans and Vietnamese in their daily lives.

(Larry Berman H-Diplo Roundtable Reviews)

The Invention of Ecocide provides a rich blend of military and scientific history packaged in a lively narrative and is a pick for science and military holdings alike.

(Midwest Book Review)

Zierler uses Agent Orange as a case study of the relationship between ecological issues and international relations, within the context of the rise of a global environmental consciousness.

(Book News)

David Zierler has done yeoman’s work with this book exploring Agent Orange and the use of herbicides in the Vietnam War. . . .I applaud [his] efforts and I am sure that he will prove a leader in the history of American environmental diplomacy.

(J. Brooks Flippen H-Environment)

When good intentions turn bad
By Dr. Wilson Trivino
Agent Orange is a familiar term left over from the legacy of the Vietnam era, but most don't know the story behind this herbicide. Dr. David Zierler has written a definitive book The Invention of Ecocide: Agent Orange, Vietnam, and the Scientist Who Changed the Way We Think About the Environment.

Speaking at the Carter Center on May 18, Zierler traced the origins movement of ecocide where herbicides were used to impact the ecology spurred by Agent Orange.

The Vietnam conflict was part of a much larger American policy initiative to stamp out communism. The anti-communism intent in Vietnam roots stem back from the Eisenhower administration continued within the Kennedy years and escalated through the Johnson administration. Well documented, Zierler has a copy in the book of the original memorandum authorizing herbicidal warfare in Vietnam.

Agent Orange, as most military initiatives, was meant to save lives. In Vietnam, the US had superior weapons, military equipment, and trained solders. The Viet Cong had the jungle and the surprised ambush. Hence, Agent Orange was meant to eliminate this advantage by defoliating the jungle terrain.

What Zierler attempts to do in his book is to delve into the history of the science of ecocide and how a handful of scientist worked to prevent its usage in war.

The Invention of Ecocide: Agent Orange, Vietnam, and the Scientist Who Changed the Way We Think About the Environment is a well written condense look into a fascinating world where politics and science intersect. This seminal work also revisited a much misunderstood of American history, the Vietnam conflict.

Civil War Time: Temporality and Identity in America, 1861-1865, by Cheryl Wells

In antebellum America, both North and South emerged as modernizing, capitalist societies. Work bells, clock towers, and personal timepieces increasingly instilled discipline on one’s day, which already was ordered by religious custom and nature’s rhythms. The Civil War changed that, argues Cheryl A. Wells. Overriding antebellum schedules, war played havoc with people’s perception and use of time. For those closest to the fighting, the war’s effect on time included disrupted patterns of sleep, extended hours of work, conflated hours of leisure, indefinite prison sentences, challenges to the gender order, and desecration of the Sabbath.

Wells calls this phenomenon “battle time.” To create a modern war machine military officers tried to graft the antebellum authority of the clock onto the actual and mental terrain of the Civil War. However, as Wells’s coverage of the Manassas and Gettysburg battles shows, military engagements followed their own logic, often without regard for the discipline imposed by clocks. Wells also looks at how battle time’s effects spilled over into periods of inaction, and she covers not only the experiences of soldiers but also those of nurses, prisoners of war, slaves, and civilians.

After the war, women returned, essentially, to an antebellum temporal world, says Wells. Elsewhere, however, postwar temporalities were complicated as freedmen and planters, and workers and industrialists renegotiated terms of labor within parameters set by the clock and nature. A crucial juncture on America’s path to an ordered relationship to time, the Civil War had an acute effect on the nation’s progress toward a modernity marked by multiple, interpenetrating times largely based on the clock.

Review

Contributes to long-standing historiographical debates. Wells displays a keen mastery of the disparate secondary literature and of the primary source material that serves as the core of this study. This book should appeal to scholars in a number of specialties, including social and military history of the Civil War, and cultural history of nineteenth-century America.

(Sarah Gardner Mercer University)

By defining battle time as a temporality that eroded the authority of God, nature, and the clock itself, Wells has written a book about the Civil War in which multiple and conflicting American timekeeping practices played crucial roles on and off the battlefield. By looking at various spaces―encampments, hospitals, homes, prisons, and battlefields―Wells depicts a war that in its battle-induced chaos put modernity on notice. While battle time ultimately only interrupted, rather than disrupted, the modernizing process initiated during the antebellum period, the interlude is worthy of the painstaking attention. Indeed, Wells's outstanding archival research into an until now neglected topic―timekeeping during the Civil War―distinguishes Civil War Time.

(Alexis McCrossen author of Holy Day, Holiday: The American Sunday)

A fascinating study brings to light much about American history, society, and culture since the Civil War.

(Midwest Book Review)

This richly researched and well-written study adds to the historiography of 'time scholars' and further develops arguments by previous historians dedicated to symbols of modern societies. . . . Wells has put together an important work that investigates battle time and its subsequent aftermath.

(Civil War History)

Wells has written a commendably short book―sweeping yet succinct, conceptual yet empirical, dense yet readable―on the unexpected but intriguing subject of time consciousness during the Civil War. . . . Civil War Time is a fine addition to the archival study of sensory experience.

(Journal of Southern History)

[Civil War Time] turns up a lot of fascinating facts . . . the details are absorbing

Civil War's effects on time in lives of Americans
By Henry Berry
There have been numerous books on how American society was changed by the Civil War. But Wells' is the only one to hone in on how Americans' sense of time was changed, and the effects this had on many areas of society and how modernity developed in America. Basically, the sense of time changed from one that was attuned to nature and religion to one that was related to time as experienced on the battlefield or in relation to battles. "The war years introduced a new complicated time to the American people, as events on the battlefield impinged on, overrode, and rearranged antebellum schedules...A convoluted mixture of God's time, natural times, personal times, and clock times, battle time was a ruling time that created a temporal web within which soldiers fought." Not only soldiers in battle developed a different sense of time, but so did nurses in hospitals, for instance, as they waited for casualities to start coming in and when they did, engaged in intense efforts to treat their wounds in a time determined by events on the battlefield. The workplace freed blacks tried to enter in the post-War decades and the habits, skills, discipline, etc., required in it were formed largely by the new sense of time engendered in the masses of men who served as soldiers in the conflict. All of the soldiers' activities, from camp life to furloughs, was pervaded by recently-fought or coming battles. The pre-War sense of time that was esentially personal gave way to a sense of time that was both remote and more controlling, and in some ways more fateful. A fascinating study which brings to light much about American history, society, and culture since the Civil War by an assistant professor of history at the U. of Wyoming.

Review

Novel Ideas is the real thing: the editors offer an excellent crash course on how to write a novel, and the contemporary novelists they interview offer advice, insight, consolation, inspiration, and (above all) stories about stories. I can't imagine a writer who wouldn't find this book useful, or a reader who wouldn't find it stimulating and provocative.

(Robert Hellenga author of The Italian Lover)

Many texts exist on writing the short story, but there are few useful ones about its less predictable cousin, the novel. This valuable book includes general fiction principles but then expands to the particular testimony of contemporary authors discussing how they wrote their well-known novels. The result for readers, writers, and writing teachers is not a cookbook but a bountiful literary feast.

(Doris Betts author of Heading West)

I’ve always loved this book and find it to be very useful when writing and revising my own novels. I’ve read nearly every novel-writing book out there, and this is the best by far.

(Elizabeth Stuckey-French coauthor of Writing Fiction: A Guide to Narrative Craft)

Novel Ideas is one of the most useful writing texts I've encountered in twelve years of teaching. The interviews have an appealing personality and intimacy but also serve as gateways to discussing more universal concerns of process and craft. I'm thrilled about the prospect of reintroducing this text to my students.

(Elise Juska author of One For Sorrow, Two For Joy)

"Novel Ideas" is a must buy if you want to be a better writer.
By Paul Hopper
As I am a novice writer with a story that needs to be told, I found myself mired and needing assistance. I purchased "Novel Ideas" to be my guide. I found the ideas and suggestions presented to be exactly what I needed. After I completed reading the authors' suggestions and the many personal stories by recognized writers, I had a feeling of confidence in my story and myself. I used that inspiration to restart my novel from page one, making important changes, deletions and additions. I am now half-way into the story with no thought of stopping. Whether my completed novel will be published or not, "Novel Ideas" will get the credit for providing my inspiration to write.

Informative and inspiring!
By lovesrealwriting
This is an exceptionally useful and compelling book on the art and craft of writing novels. Clear, comprehensive, and non-prescriptive. The interviews with novelists (Jane Smiley, Sena Jeter Naslund, MIchael Cunningham, Michael Chabon, Larry Brown and many more!)are wholly excellent. The interviewer asks intelligent, important questions and the interviewees are generally very honest and generous in sharing with the reader a wide range of approaches and techniques. Informative and inspiring. One of the very best I've read on the subject.

There is technical information for how to compose and shape a novel, writing prompts and even inspirational interviews by esteemed authors. This book was recommended for my writing workshop otherwise I probably wouldn't have known about it. I'm so glad it was recommended. I love this book and am sure I'll go back to it for years to come.

Hawthorne and Melville: Writing a RelationshipFrom Brand: University of Georgia Press

Herman Melville and Nathaniel Hawthorne met in 1850 and enjoyed for sixteen months an intense but brief friendship. Taking advantage of new interpretive tools such as queer theory, globalist studies, political and social ideology, marketplace analysis, psychoanalytical and philosophical applications to literature, masculinist theory, and critical studies of race, the twelve essays in this book focus on a number of provocative personal, professional, and literary ambiguities existing between the two writers.

Jana L. Argersinger and Leland S. Person introduce the volume with a lively summary of the known biographical facts of the two writers’ relationship and an overview of the relevant scholarship to date. Some of the essays that follow broach the possibility of sexual dimensions to the relationship, a question that “looms like a grand hooded phantom” over the field of Melville-Hawthorne studies. Questions of influence―Hawthorne’s on Moby-Dick and Pierre and Melville’s on The Blithedale Romance, to mention only the most obvious instances―are also discussed. Other topics covered include professional competitiveness; Melville’s search for a father figure; masculine ambivalence in the marketplace; and political-literary aspects of nationalism, transcendentalism, race, and other defining issues of Hawthorne and Melville’s times.

Roughly half of the essays focus on biographical issues; the others take literary perspectives. The essays are informed by a variety of critical approaches, as well as by new historical insights and new understandings of the possibilities that existed for male friendships in nineteenth-century American culture.

Review

This engaging—sometimes even moving—collection produces a compelling, multidirectional dialogue about how readers might understand the substance of the provocatively cryptic relationship between Herman Melville and Nathaniel Hawthorne. Whatever their answers, the essays included here manage to convey the critical liveliness that each scholar brings to the incomplete dialogue between these two centrally important U.S. writers.

(Dana D. Nelson Vanderbilt University)

This provocative book, as it examines the complex relationship between Hawthorne and Melville, yields a series of engrossing and deeply informed readings of their lives and their works. The contributors to this volume have obviously freed themselves from the tradition of a cautious and muted approach to the Hawthorne-Melville relationship and, by taking a new, boldly imaginative and speculative approach, have arrived at rich new understandings of the relationship, especially its sexual and political dynamics. The result is a major contribution to scholarship of the period.

(Larry J. Reynolds author of European Revolutions and the American Literary Renaissance)

An Everglades Providence: Marjory Stoneman Douglas and the American Environmental Century (Environmental History and the American South Ser

No one did more than Marjory Stoneman Douglas to transform the Everglades from the country's most maligned swamp into its most beloved wetland. By the late twentieth century, her name and her classic The Everglades: River of Grass had become synonymous with Everglades protection. The crusading resolve and boundless energy of this implacable elder won the hearts of an admiring public while confounding her opponents―growth merchants intent on having their way with the Everglades. Douglas's efforts ultimately earned her a place among a mere handful of individuals honored as a namesake of a national wilderness area.

In the first comprehensive biography of Douglas, Jack E. Davis explores the 108-year life of this compelling woman. Douglas was more than an environmental activist. She was a suffragist, a lifetime feminist and supporter of the ERA, a champion of social justice, and an author of diverse literary talent. She came of age literally and professionally during the American environmental century, the century in which Americans mobilized an unprecedented popular movement to counter the equally unprecedented liberties they had taken in exploiting, polluting, and destroying the natural world.

The Everglades were a living barometer of America's often tentative shift toward greater environmental responsibility. Reconstructing this larger picture, Davis recounts the shifts in Douglas's own life and her instrumental role in four important developments that contributed to Everglades protection: the making of a positive wetland image, the creation of a national park, the expanding influence of ecological science, and the rise of the modern environmental movement. In the grand but beleaguered Everglades, which Douglas came to understand is a vast natural system that supports human life, she saw nature's providence.

Review
"A compelling biography of one of the twentieth century's giants in American conservation and letters. Davis does for Marjory Stoneman Douglas what Linda Lear did for Rachel Carson and Farley Mowat did for Dian Fossey. He gives us the textures of a principled woman, sometimes troubled, sometimes ambitious, always dedicated to an unselfish goal. Davis does justice to both Douglas's life and the incipient days of America's environmental awakening."--Ted Levin, author of Liquid Land: A Journey through the Florida Everglades

"I congratulate Davis for his exceptional book on the life of Marjory Stoneman Douglas. More than just a biography, the book provides an excellent history of the modern environmental movement. I am certain that all who read it will be not only inspired by the dynamic, pivotal, and courageous life and work of Marjory Stoneman Douglas but also reminded of how terribly essential her efforts to protect the Florida Everglades and the environment remain."--Senator Bob Graham

"Davis has vividly captured the Marjory Stoneman Douglas I knew—a feisty, funny, indomitable American original. With erudition and eloquence he carries the reader along in a gripping story of the century-long struggle to save the Everglades. And he tells us that Marjory would surely want us to know that the struggle is far from over. This book inspires us to carry on her work."--Diana Chapman Walsh, president of Wellesley College, 1993-2007

"A brilliant biography, An Everglades Providence completes the portrait of one of the most important environmental figures of the twentieth century. Environmentalists claim Marjory Stoneman Douglas as theirs, but she was not a full-time activist until age 79. Davis fills in the picture with writing as clever and fluid as his subject's and with meticulous research that will have readers asking, 'How'd he find that?' His book is also another life story: that of South Florida's environment and its devastating alteration. A must-read for citizens and decisionmakers, who can choose to keep altering nature or heed Douglas and live in its balance."--Cynthia Barnett, author of Mirage: Florida and the Vanishing Water of the Eastern U.S.

"An impressive look at America during Douglas's lifetime and the growth of America's environmental movement. This outstanding volume is essential for environmental and history collections."--Library Journal

"Paints an affectionate portrait of the quirky Douglas."--Orion Magazine

"An Everglades Providence hardly knocks Douglas off the pedestal she properly occupies in Florida history. But this ambitious, scrupulously thorough biography extends credit to the many other people who helped put her there. Without diminishing Douglas' accomplishments, Davis details her critical collaborations with mentors, scientists, activists, journalists and friends who influenced her."--Miami Herald

“Davis never met Douglas, but he has given her the serious biography she deserves, capturing her cantankerous personality and brilliant mind, while at the same time providing the historical context necessary to fully appreciate her amazing life. It's a tour de force."--St. Petersburg Times

struggle to preserve the Everglades by a leading 20th-century environmentalist
By Henry Berry
The year 1947 turned out to be a midpoint in the environmental activism of Marjory Stoneman Douglas, not the culmination some expected. In this year, President Truman dedicated the Everglades National Park. Stoneman's environmental classic The Everglades: River of Grass was also published. But as anyone living today knows, the Everglades was not preserved for all time. In 1947, Douglas still had 50 years of life ahead of her. She died in 1998 at the age of 108. During the second half of her life, she continued to work tirelessly to build on her earlier, partial successes in preserving the Everglades and playing a lead in environmentalism.

Though not as well-known or celebrated as John Muir or Rachel Carson even by environmentalists, Douglas was a central figure in reformulating the public's perspective on the environment as she focused particularly on the preservation of the Everglades. "More than any other single writer or activist, [she] embodied the American environmental century--that period from the closing of the frontier to the end of the twentieth century during which environmental concerns rose to the fore in American politics and society." (from the Foreword by Paul S. Sutter)

Davis's voluminous biography takes in the full scope of Douglas's life from shaky marriage, noted author of stories and novels, prominent forebears and influence of her father who was cofounder of the Miami Herald, and feminist leader, to the environmental activism and projects she was involved in, especially the recognition of the place of the Everglades in Florida's and the U.S.'s environmental heritage and its preservation for which she is most remembered. At appropriate spots in the straightforward chronological biography, Davis goes into the legal problems of the man Douglas was briefly married to, her work on the homefront in World War II, the path of her literary career, and specifics of environmental legislation. The author also relates scientific information as appropriate for readers to understand these topics and concomitantly appreciate Douglas's knowledge of environmentalism and her activist approach focusing on issues and pressing for their resolution.

In this first biography on this pioneering environmentalist--which for most readers will be an introductory biography--Davis, as was his aim, gets in all the biographical material as gleaned from references in notes running more than 125 pages. As all this in a lifespan of over 100 years is presented on the same par, as more or less indiscriminate, unevaluated information, there is little perspective or drama. The tactics of the Florida developer Broward, Douglas's work on legislation in Washington, critical points in saving the Everglades, Douglas's feminist activism, and the many other subjects are treated mostly as varied aspects of her life and work. Despite Davis's diffident, though highly informed stance as author, Douglas's unique achievements shine through.
