Remaking Wormsloe Plantation: The Environmental History of a Lowcountry Landscape (Environmental History and the American South Ser.)By

Why do we preserve certain landscapes while developing others without restraint? Drew A. Swanson’s in-depth look at Wormsloe plantation, located on the salt marshes outside of Savannah, Georgia, explores that question while revealing the broad historical forces that have shaped the lowcountry South.

Wormsloe is one of the most historic and ecologically significant stretches of the Georgia coast. It has remained in the hands of one family from 1736, when Georgia’s Trustees granted it to Noble Jones, through the 1970s, when much of Wormsloe was ceded to Georgia for the creation of a state historic site. It has served as a guard post against aggression from Spanish Florida; a node in an emerging cotton economy connected to far-flung places like Lancashire and India; a retreat for pleasure and leisure; and a carefully maintained historic site and green space. Like many lowcountry places, Wormsloe is inextricably tied to regional, national, and global environments and is the product of transatlantic exchanges.

Swanson argues that while visitors to Wormsloe value what they perceive to be an “authentic,” undisturbed place, this landscape is actually the product of aggressive management over generations. He also finds that Wormsloe is an ideal place to get at hidden stories, such as African American environmental and agricultural knowledge, conceptions of health and disease, the relationship between manual labor and views of nature, and the ties between historic preservation and natural resource conservation. Remaking Wormsloe Plantation connects this distinct Georgia place to the broader world, adding depth and nuance to the understanding of our own conceptions of nature and history.

Review

This is a really fine book, rich in the kind of detail that explains the lived-in quality of a place, deeply researched and broadly contextualized, with writing that is often graceful and a pleasure to read.

(Mart A. Stewart author of “What Nature Suffers to Groe”: Life, Labor, and Landscape on the Georgia Coast, 1680–1920)

A compelling read with the plantation as the star on a stage whose supporting cast features not only the men and women who established, owned, and labored on it, reinventing it in each generation, but the processes linking it with lowcountry, Atlantic, and global arenas. Lucidly conceptualized and elegantly written, this is environmental history at its best.

(Shepard Krech III author of Spirits of the Air: Birds and American Indians in the South)

Remaking Wormsloe Plantation connects this distinct Georgia place to the broader world, adding depth and nuance to the understanding of our own conception of nature and history.

(Bob Edmonds McCormick Messenger)

This detailed study of Wormsloe Plantation in coastal Georgia reflects the macro-history of settlement, land development, and reinvention of the past in the coastal Deep South and, by extension, the constant and universal reinvention of the past. . . . Swanson, an authorized historian of Wormsloe, presents a history that includes all players, from humans to microbes. He reminds readers that history is never a snapshot of the past, but rather the top layer of fathomless strata of physical and psychological influences.

(T. S. Martin Choice)

More than a microhistory . . . Swanson’s story is blessed with, as he says, an interesting ‘cast’ of humans and nonhuman characters, including ‘live oaks, oysters, European and African colonists, mosquitos, viruses, government officials, hogs, chickens, historians, cotton plants, silkworms, and cattle ticks.’ The interactions of these, and the competing roles of human agents and the forces of nature, are the basis for this rich and compelling history.

(Mark R. Finlay Georgia Historical Quarterly)

Remaking Wormsloe Plantation connects this distinct Georgia place to the broader world, adding depth and nuance to the understanding of our own conceptions of nature and history.

(Southeastern Naturalist)

Informative and inspiring description of Lowcountry palimpsest
By jbscartog
Who would imagine that a landscape history could be both instructive and inspiring? "Remaking Wormsloe Plantation" is both - and is much more. Dr. Swanson captures the essence of Wormsloe, as a Colonial Lowcountry plantation - family estate - state historic site - interpretive resource, and brings a nearly three hundred year history up to date with his remarkably well documented manuscript. For historians of Lowcountry plantations, this is a must read. For anyone interested in the history of Wormsloe, from its Colonial origins to its current status, especially regarding landscape and ecological changes - both natural and man made - this is an necessity. Swanson's description and documentation of Wormsloe's strategic importance in the defense of the fledgling Georgia colony, the experimental agricultural period, the marginally successful slave plantation, the Civil War period and effects of Reconstruction, attempts at tourism appeal with early 20th Century gardens, the struggle to maintain Wormsloe's integrity in the face of urban development and exploding property taxation, the transition to a Sate Historic Site, the myopic vision of pine trees as paper bags, and finally the Miley Cyrus movie, overwhelmingly displays how the love of one family (Jones-DeRenne-Barrow) for a small piece of land has shaped history. For anyone who reads this short 188 page masterpiece of landscape history, their vision of Wormsloe will be forever altered and enhanced with a better understanding and appreciation of the value of this parcel of land occupying the southern half of the Isle of Hope, Georgia. Wormsloe has been described as a palimpsest, and the layers will be reconstructed long into the future.

A thought-provoking history of rare intellectual honesty
By M. J. McCue
I've never visited Wormsloe Plantation near Savannah, but this subject ought to interest all of us who love the coastal South. This book offers us many surprises, including perspectives on plantation history that demolish many stereotypes and replace them with more thoughtful and complex understandings. For example, this book recounts how a black Muslim, Bilali, was instrumental in bringing sophisticated agricultural practices to the Southern coast, and Bilali actually practiced his Islamic religion in Georgia after arriving a slave, with his family. "Remaking Wormsloe Plantation" is full of such fascinating little-known facts.
The author has taken risks in illuminating the mythical and political behaviors that inform the history of plantations such as Wormsloe, which is now a state historic site, and he traces especially well its social and environmental history post-Civil War, right up to the present. University of Georgia Press is to be congratulated for permitting young author Drew Swanson the academic freedom to write such a ground-breaking study. The volume is well-edited, well-indexed, and the footnotes and bibliography demonstrate his deep understanding of the subject. Although titled an "environmental history" this book addresses far more than scientific issues, exploring ethics and many broad topics of inquiry we think of as the Humanities. While an easy and informative read, it's a book for thinking too.

Excellent history of one family's ownership of a famous coastal Georgia property
By Miles K Thoroman
Wormsloe and the family who own it have been widely documented over the last sixty years. The book does an excellent job of telling the story of the property and its use, beginning in the colonial era until today.
