SINGLE MOST VALUABLE BOOK ON HISTORY OF ATLANTA

This massive, 2,000-page compilation is the essential reference book for anyone who ever lived in Atlanta or anyone who cares passionately about the city's history.

Yes, it does indeed have the world's most un-sexy title that sounds more like a telephone book. And it reads like one. But the late author has done am absolutely stunning research job as the city's best-known historian -- a labor of love that obviously consumed much of his life. Reading it all the way through from cover to cover, as I'm doing, requires a prodigious endurance and tons of black coffee, because the author seemingly crammed into it every single scrap of information he ever dug up -- including long lists of the names of every obscure person who ever served on local grand juries. And long lists of every prominent Atlantan who died in each year from the 1830s through the 1930s.

Gone With the Wind it's not. But if you're able to quickly skim through the trivia, it's well worth reading the entire 2,000 pages for the stunning nuggets of information buried among the trivia . . . such as the fact that the City of Atlanta almost ended up in the little country town of Norcross 16 miles away in neighboring Gwinett County instead of in Fulton County. Who'd a thunk it? If your coffee pot and your caffeine tolerance hold out, you will come away from that marathon read with a whole new appreciation for the sweeping panorama of the city's super-colorful past.

However its primary use is as an enormously valuable reference book that belongs on the bookshelf of everyone who loves that city.

Want to know when the Flatiron Building was constructed? It's there. Want to know what the lower stretch of Peachtree Street was called in earlier days? It's there. Want to know where the old "River Line" streetcar went? It's there. Want to know what Atlanta looked like in the 1820s when it was an Indian village called "Standing Peachtree?" It's there. The author, Franklin Garrett, never met a factual tidbit he didn't like. Over the years, he must have tucked away in drawers thousands of scraps of paper on which he jotted down new tidbits of information that he stumbled upon. If so, then he never threw away a scrap. They all ended up in this book..

My biggest criticism of the book is that the editors at the University of Georgia Press let him get away with endlessly changing subjects in the middle of pages without so much as a bold-face sub-head to alert the reader that Garrett is changing topics, giving the reader whiplash. But then I suppose if the editors had insisted on sub-heads, the massive two-volume set would have run 3,000 pages instead of 2,000, and your bookshelf would have collapsed from the weight..

NOTE: There is a third volume written after Garrett's death by the well-known former Atlanta Constitution columnist Harold Martin which picks up the story after the 1930s.where Garrett left off.

The most detailed history on the early days of Atlanta

Since my family history dates back to the early days of Marthasville (Atlanta), I wanted to read about the history of the area. Franklin Garrett is the premier historian of the Atlanta area, and this book (1 of 2) did not disappoint. Very happy to have purchased this link to my family's past.

Long out of print this edition finally completes my 3 volume set. It is a very detailed and concise history of Atlanta, Georgia, very readable and fulfills my research needs.

Atkinson sees Faulkner’s Depression-era novels and stories as an ideological battleground―in much the same way that 1930s America was. With their contrapuntal narratives that present alternative accounts of the same events, these works order multiple perspectives under the design of narrative unity. Thus, Faulkner’s ongoing engagement with cultural politics gives aesthetic expression to a fundamental ideological challenge of Depression-era America: how to shape what FDR called a “new order of things” out of such conflicting voices as the radical left, the Popular Front, and the Southern Agrarians.

Focusing on aesthetic decadence in Mosquitoes and dispossession in The Sound and the Fury, Atkinson shows how Faulkner anticipated and mediated emergent sociocultural forces of the late 1920s and early 1930s. In Sanctuary; Light in August; Absalom, Absalom!; and “Dry September,” Faulkner explores social upheaval (in the form of lynching and mob violence), fascism, and the appeal of strong leadership during troubled times. As I Lay Dying, The Hamlet, “Barn Burning,” and “The Tall Men” reveal his “ambivalent agrarianism”―his sympathy for, yet anxiety about, the legions of poor and landless farmers and sharecroppers. In The Unvanquished, Faulkner views Depression concerns through the historical lens of the Civil War, highlighting the forces of destruction and reconstruction common to both events.

Faulkner is no proletarian writer, says Atkinson. However, the dearth of overt references to the Depression in his work is not a sign that Faulkner was out of touch with the times or consumed with aesthetics to the point of ignoring social reality. Through his comprehensive social vision and his connections to the rural South, Hollywood, and New York, Faulkner offers readers remarkable new insight into Depression concerns.

In seeing the barn-burning scene in "As I Lay Dying" as representing "the impulse toward revolution" and a section of Jason's narrative in "The Sound and the Fury" as indicating capitalism standing triumphant after a period beginning about 1890 "when the expanding mercantile economy with an industrial base substantially redefined America's socioeconomic order," Atkinson discloses how Faulkner can be read as a "Depression writer who, in keeping with the times, found his own means of radical and revolutionary expression." Overall, "Faulkner gave to Depression readers an order of things in which totalizing concepts of unity, organic wholeness, and harmony exist not as achievable ends but rather as tenuous constructs" always vulnerable to the natural human desire to pursue individual liberty in multifarious ways. This reading of Faulkner is not an alternative to the generally accepted one of Faulkner as dealing mainly with the rural culture, class and personal relationships, and the psychodynamics peculiar to the latter 1800's and early 1900's South, but it expands it considerably. Rather than seen only as regional inhabitants suffering from their incapacity to accept defeat and in often half-crazed ways trying to maintain a semblance of the traditional social structure, Faulkner's Southern characters can be seen as well as representative Americans dealing with economic hardships and uncertainties of the Depression and struggling with political questions and temptations relating to an authoritarian regime, forms of socialism, and the budding new order offered by Roosevelt. Faulkner's place in the literary politics of his time, a topic often passed by in critical work to unravel the complexities of his characters and his style, is also dealt with in developing how his work reflects the conditions and mentality of his time. Atkinson--who teaches at Augusta State U. in Georgia--sheds light on this broader view of this major American author active in the mid 1900s by focusing on individual characters, incidents, and circumstances in his novels.

Spanning nearly a century, the letters in this collection revolve around a central event in the history of a southern family: the death of the eldest son owing to sickness contracted during service in the Confederate Army. The letters reveal a slaveowning family with keen interests in art, music, and nature and an unshakable belief in their religion and in the Confederate cause.

William Seagrove Smith was a private in the signal corps of the Eighteenth Battalion, Georgia Infantry. Smith was part of the force defending Savannah until it fell in late 1864, and then marched with General William J. Hardee in his famous retreat out of the city and through the Carolinas. Like so many other soldiers on both sides of the conflict, William Smith fell not at the hands of an enemy but from disease. He died in Raleigh, North Carolina, on July 7, 1865. A parallel and complementary story about William's younger brother, Archibald, also emerges in the letters. As a cadet at Georgia Military Institute, Archibald was (as his parents fervently wished) exempt from service; however, he ultimately saw―and survived―action before the war's end.

Scattered among the many lines in the letters that are devoted to the two brothers are a wealth of particulars about agricultural, industrial, and social life in the family's north Georgia community of Roswell, the Smith family's flight from Sherman's invasion force, their lives as refugees in south Georgia, and a final reunion of the Smith brothers outside of Savannah just after the city's fall. Also included are a number of moving exchanges between the Smiths and the family that cared for William in his final days.

A brief history of the Smith family through 1863 begins the correspondence, while the letters following the war reveal their fortitude in the face of William's death and the hardships of Reconstruction. The volume concludes with selected letters from the subsequent generation of Smiths, who conjure images of the Old South and revive the memory of William. Like the most distinguished Civil War-era letter collections, The Death of a Confederate introduces a personal dimension to its story that is often lost in histories of this sweeping event.

About the Author
Arthur N. Skinner is a professor of visual arts at Eckerd College. James L. Skinner was the Charles A. Dana Professor of English at Presbyterian College where he taught on the faculty for thirty-eight years and was editor of "The Autobiography of Henry Merrell: Industrial Missionary to the South" (Georgia, 1991). The Skinner family, who are related to the Smiths by marriage, inherited the letters in this volume, along with the Smith plantation home in Roswell, in 1981.

Amazing insight into the minds of a Confederate family during the Civil War

I bought this book because I live in Roswell GA and I'm interested in the history of the town. The letters of this family really shows a level of closeness (even with distance between them) as they plowed through the harshness of the war. You feel terrible for poor William. If medicine had been better, he would have lived. You feel terrible for his family because they could not be there when he died. The letters are tedious to read, but full of so much information of the times. The fact that they collected and were interested in various flowers is amusing. Makes you wonder what we would be interested in if we didn't have television, internet, etc. to occupy our minds.

This small book gives a concise overview of the history of St. Catherines Island, the site of one of the earliest Spanish settlements in the New World (mid-16th c.), and of the excavation work. Written by someone who knows what he's talking about so well he can get the job done in 65 pages.

I found this to be an excellent book, especially for college
students interested in Leadership. The authors take a thoughtful and critical look at the field from a variety of different perspectives. The field of Leadership studies needs more academic rigor and more books like this one.

After 20 pages, I was convinced that Words and Music was the best book about pop that I had ever read. After 280 pages, I was at least convinced that it was the weirdest book about pop I had ever read. But that too is a kind of recommendation.

Music and list junkies of the world unite, for the highly analytical

I grew up reading the liner notes of Paul Morley on records by Art Of Noise, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Propaganda, and whatever else he did on ZTT in the early to mid-1980's. I became aware of his work as a journalist with the New Musical Express, but being from Honolulu with no access to the NME, I never read those pieces. Nonetheless, Morley's unique style of writing made a big impact on me, as he seemed to be someone who just didn't take a casual listen. He went in deep, and as Brother J from X-Clan would say after hearing a reply from Professor X the overseer, deeper than Atlantis.

"Words And Music" is an intense read from start to finish, as Morley explores the world of pop music through the metaphor of a city, a city that perhaps the author referred to in the video to "Beat Box" by his group, Art Of Noise. If the ZTT building was in the very heart of the city, this book explores every organ, cavity, orifice, avenue, dead end, open end, pond, river, hidden room, and basement in the city that never sleeps, a city that has no beginning or end, a city that has no boundaries within its own self-proclaimed boundaries.

WTF? In truth, it's his examination of recorded music, how popular mainstream music has often flaunted with the stranger and avant-garde without really knowing it, and how we as fans, creators, and archivists react to the music we listen to, the voyages we travel on, and the listening experience and what we gain from it. It's heavy with metaphor and it may seem like a difficult read at first but if you stay on track, everything will fall into place once you get closer to the last chapter. As for a chapter, the first one is over 100 pages long, and even if you stumble and fall, Morley knows you'll want to get up, dust off, and get back on his ride.

"Words And Music" is very much about music, but it's also about Morley and his love of music, his love of writing, but also his love/hate relationship with it all. He at times (if not most of the time) turns the mirror on himself, which may be a way of reflecting the mirror on you to figure out how and why the music you listen to is as powerful as it could and should be.

Outside of being analytical, it's very funny and very Morley. If you're at all familiar with his liner notes, you should know what you're getting into. It's like reading the back of a ZTT album cover, times 100. It's incredibly researched, making the connection between the creative minds of the 18th and 19th centuries, the feel and touch of instrumentation and a curiosity about new technology being incorporated into the music we've create and listened to in the 20th and 21st centuries.

For the musical journeyman in all of us, a mandatory read.

JANISSE RAY is the author of Pinhook: Finding Wholeness in a Fragmented Land, Wild Card Quilt: Taking a Chance on Home, the best-selling Ecology of a Cracker Childhood, and The Seed Underground: A Growing Revolution to Save Food. She is also the author of a poetry collection, A House of Branches, and coeditor of Between Two Rivers: Stories from the Red Hills to the Gulf. She lives in the Altamaha Community in Reidsville, Georgia.

Forceful and Eloquent

Janisse Ray grew up in South Georgia, before industrialized agriculture and forestry became the accepted norm. She passionately loves the Altamaha River and the Georgia countryside, and laments it's continued destruction at the hands of brutal, soulless people and corporations. As a Georgia resident who spent some years growing up on a small farm in rural Georgia near the Ocmulgee River, which feeds into the Altamaha River, I share her despair at what is happening to this once exquisitely beautiful state. Our politicians and the lobbyists who own them are so profoundly short-sighted and greedy, and so corrupt, that most of the remaining natural beauty of this state is at risk of imminent ruin. What will be left for our children and grandchildren, and all the generations to come? They don't care.

compelling book

For those of you who are already fans of Janisse Ray's writings you will not be disappointed. As with her other books, Drifting into Darien has a mix of nature and environmental activism along with many personal stories. Her passion for life and passion for caring for the natural world are clear. Some chapters, such as the one which discusses how the government classifies forests and ones about the destruction of our rivers are frustrating to read. They are well written and highlight some failings of our public policy makers. Others like the chapter on botanists were hilarious to read because I can see myself and certain friends fitting the description. All in all, a great read.

This story gave you insight to a different world of the Altamaha River and what it meant not only to the writer but to her family and community. Well written, a place I would love to visit.
