Not Quite What I Expected

The book is a collection of essays, each covering a different topic or aspect of Charlotte. On the positive side, if you need or want information about this city, there is a lot in here. On the negative side, the book is, well, rather dry. More of an academic slant than I was looking for. Nothing wrong with that, I suppose, but after a few chapters, I stated to skim, and even skipped a couple of chapters altogether. I kind of feel bad about not being more positive about the book, but it just wasn't what I was expecting, which is not the fault of the authors. I was simply looking for a different type of book than what this proved to be.

Jakle and Sculle ask why some of the early prophetic warnings about our car culture went unheeded and why the arguments of its promoters resonated so persuasively. Today, the automobile is implicated in any number of environmental, even social, problems. As the wisdom of our dependence on automobile travel has come into serious question, reassessment of how we first became that way is more important than ever.

In their latest collaboration (after 2004's Lots of Parking: Land Use is a Car Culture), University of Illinois landscape architecture professor Jakle and Illinois Historic Preservation Agency researcher Sculle take a detailed look at the history of the American highway, and the cascade of commercial and sociological changes it precipitated. Providing a driver's-eye-view of "motoring," Jakle and Sculle follow the development of the modern road system, from the first "named" highways through federally-subsidized state departments, focusing on "tourist travel, the source of motoring's early exhilaration, which energized much of what came after, such as commuting and the journey to shop." They look also at attendant industries like repair shops and gas stations, fast-food restaurants and motels, amusement parks and fresh fruit stands that collectively make the roadside "a place of legendary recreation." Though equally thorough, subsequent chapters on truck culture and bus travel prove less engrossing; otherwise, a compelling read about America's fascination with the open road. 75 b&w photos.

effects of automobile culture on American society

Between 1994 and 2004, Jakle and Sculle coauthored five other books on the automobile and aspects of American culture. These were on gas stations, motels, roadside restaurants, parking as land usage, and roadside signs. In this newest book. they do not focus on a similar specific subject related to Americans attachment to automobiles. Rather, the theme of this work is the relatively amorphous highway experience they call "motoring"; a concept they "define as that experience by which drivers, machines, and highways become integrally linked. Content such as roadside scenery and objects, design of highways as conducing to dream fulfillment, and the growth of ubiquitous convenience stores connected to gas stations with plentiful associated illustrations evince that the authors drew on their previous books--so that this is something of a synthesis of them, "Motoring," however, has a limited critical dimension not found in the earlier works. "As the wisdom of America's passionate embrace of automobility has come into serious question" in light of urban sprawl, environmental deterioration, energy waste, and class and racial issues surfacing in recent years, "reassessing how American became so dependent on automobiles seems more important than ever." To the extent they engage in criticism, Jakle and Sculle mostly point out excesses and heedlessness and occasionally silliness rather than engage in a fundamental critique of the automobile in the culture.

The book's eclectic content is also brought into the perspective of visual culture, a relatively new field which is being applied to many aspects of American culture. "The pleasure trip, as with all forms of auto trip taking, also came to privilege human visuality." Highways were planned so that at least in some parts they passed by scenic areas; and about the mid 1900s, funds for roadside landscaping were included in many highway appropriations. In other places, however, roadsides inevitably became highly-commercialized with the great numbers of Americans and their families traveling by car. "The commercial roadside evolved as a linear array of conveniently accessed places, positioned and designed specifically to entice." No matter what the roadside sights, motoring changed the pace of the visual experience to "a rapid kaleidoscope seeing of things overwhelming slower, more studied apprehension."

The changes in visual experience, psychology of boundaries, motives for involvement, social life, and expectations Jakle and Sculle link to the automobile compare with similar changes linked to the computer becoming central in the society. While the open road has not lost all of its romance, the notion that it offers an escape from the routines of daily life and a way to new horizons seems outdated, as the authors imply. Just ask anyone stuck in rush hour traffic.

Many of these additional nonproliferation arrangements are less formal and have fewer members than the global treaties.

International Cooperation on WMD Nonproliferation calls attention to the emergence of international cooperation beyond the core global nonproliferation treaties. The contributors examine why these other cooperative nonproliferation mechanisms have emerged, assess their effectiveness, and ask how well the different pieces of the global nonproliferation regime complex fit together. Collectively, the essayists show that states have added new forms of international cooperation to combat WMD proliferation for multiple reasons, including the need to address new problems and the entrepreneurial activities of key state leaders. Despite the complications created by the existence of so many different cooperative arrangements, this collection shows the world is witnessing a process of building cooperation that is leading to greater levels of activity in support of norms against WMD and terrorism.

Like its predecessor, the book gathers both critiques and defenses of the idea of wilderness from a wide variety of perspectives and voices. The Wilderness Debate Rages On includes the best explorations of the concept of the concept of wilderness from the past decade, underappreciated essays from the early twentieth century that offer an alternative vision of the concept and importance of wilderness, and writings meant to clarify or help us rethink the concept of wilderness. Narrative writers such as Wendell Berry, Scott Russell Sanders, Marilynne Robinson, Kathleen Dean Moore, and Lynn Maria Laitala are also given a voice in order to show how the wilderness debate is expanding outside the academy.

The writers represented in the anthology include ecologists, environmental philosophers, conservation biologists, cultural geographers, and environmental activists. The book begins with little-known papers by early twentieth-century ecologists advocating the preservation of natural areas for scientific study, not, as did Thoreau, Muir, and the early Leopold, for purposes of outdoor recreation. The editors argue that had these writers influenced the eventual development of federal wilderness policy, our national wilderness system would better serve contemporary conservation priorities for representative ecosystems and biodiversity.

This authoritative textual edition presents Tobias Smollett's translation of Cervantes's Don Quixote in the form most faithful to Smollett's own intentions. It includes Francis Hayman's twenty-eight illustrations engraved for the original edition, Smollett's explanatory notes, and his prefatory "Life of Cervantes."

Smollett's Don Quixote first appeared in 1755 and was for many years the most popular English-language version of Cervantes's masterpiece. However, soon after the start of the nineteenth century, its reputation began to suffer. Rival translators, literary hucksters, and careless scholars initiated or fed a variety of charges against Smollett―even plagiarism. For almost 130 years no publisher risked reprinting it.

Redemption began in 1986, when the distinguished Mexican novelist Carlos Fuentes, in his foreword to a new (albeit flawed) edition of Smollett's translation, declared it to be "the authentic vernacular version" of Don Quixote in English. Fuentes's opinion was in accord with that of the preeminent Cervantist, Francisco Rodríguez Marín, who decades earlier had declared Smollett's Don Quixote to be his preferred English version.

Martin C. Battestin's introduction discusses the composition, publication, and controversial reception of Smollett's Don Quixote. Battestin's notes identify Smollett's sources in his "Life of Cervantes" and in his commentary, provide cross-references to his other works, and illustrate Smollett's originality or dependence on previous translations. Also included is a complete textual apparatus, a glossary of unfamiliar terms, and an appendix comparing a selection of Francis Hayman's original illustrations with the engraved renderings used in the book.

A literary classic, Smollet's translation is delightful to read, though the book could use better introductory and critical essays. The glossing is primarily to other sources and not explanatory. Not a good student edition, but a good edition for someone who knows the text already.

The Politics of Whiteness presents the first sustained analysis of white racial identity among workers in what was the South’s largest industry for much of the twentieth century: textiles. Michelle Brattain, who grounds her work in a study of Rome, Georgia, from the Great Depression to the 1970s, adds a significant new dimension to a field that before had focused primarily on antiunionism, paternalism, or mill village culture. Many scholars have argued that racial tensions kept black and white workers from seeing their shared interests. While that may be so, says Brattain, Jim Crow and southern industry also functioned to give white workers very different and racially specific interests. Most important, Brattain uncovers considerable white working-class political influence and activism, which, by re-creating and defending southern institutions grounded in the idea of racial difference, helped pave the way for resistance to the civil rights movement.

Margaret Walker became the first African American to win a national literary award when her collection For My People was chosen for the Yale Series of Younger Poets in 1942. About the Author
MARGARET WALKER (1915-1998) wrote poetry, essays, the novel Jubilee, and a biography of Richard Wright. She created pioneering programs in the humanities and African American studies at Jackson State University, where she was a faculty member for almost three decades.

Margaret Walker’s This Is My Century: New and Collected Poems: So Much More Than Just Your Average Poem Collection

Oh boy, here I am again. Back at it again being forced to write another book review for one of my classes at Lehman College. Last time it was a novel, but this time it’s This Is My Century: New and Collected Poems written by Margaret Walker. Last time was also different because I had no inspiration for writing the review, but this time I got lucky. This book review comes at the perfect crossroad – that is me being in an American Literature class, and also this being the time of selecting our next presidential candidates, and boy do I love talking about politics and this country so here we go!

This Is My Century: New and Collected Poems is a compilation of Margaret Walker’s life’s work. The poem collection features five sections: ‘For My People ” – where the poems mostly talk about the struggles that black people faced – “Prophets For A New Day” and “October Journey” – where the poems talk about black people fighting for changes in the racist South and some of the victories and setbacks that they faced – and lastly “This Is My Century” and “Farish Street” – where the poems mostly talk about enjoying the present day and reflecting on how far we have come.

Having been in my American Literature class for a few weeks now, after I finished reading Walker’s poem collection I was amazed. I noticed something that I had never noticed before, and that is that Walker has created a timeless helping-hand to black people all over the world experiencing turmoil in any era. To agree with this conclusion you must first understand how I realized it. In my American Literature class we have read multiple narratives that have taught us that although we are all American by default, we may not always truly feel that we belong to that group deep in our hearts because of what it stands for. Taking this into consideration and given the history of how they came to reside here, it comes as no surprise that most black people do not feel like they really belong here or are even accepted here for that matter. This idea is something that Margaret Walker seems to understand and seems to want to help with. Although she speaks of a different time period, no matter what problem black people seem to be facing, there is always a poem that has an answer for it.

For instance, with Barack Obama’s presidency coming to an end, some black people are worried that the next president will push black problems and needs aside, leaving us with no one to look out for our best interests. However, if you read some of Walker’s poems you will see that she has a soothing response for this worry. In the section “This is My Century” the poem “Five Black Men… and Ten Will Save the City” describes some of the men who fought for equality for blacks against all odds. The poem reads “Douglass, Du Bois, Garvey, King, and Malcolm X / Five black men whose leadership we cherish in the history books / from Slavery to Segregation and the Age of Integration / down the primrose path to face oblivion.” Here we see that although none of these men were the president of the United States, they still did wonders for the black community. The same idea can be applied to the upcoming presidential election. Although we will no longer have a black president, there will always be leaders looking out for the black community.

Another instance where Walker’s poems can provide a soothing helping-hand in an era other than her own is when talking about the Black Lives Matter movement. The innocent killing of black men, women, and children has the whole entire community feeling extremely worthless. It seems as though our days are numbered and there is nothing that we can do to stop it. However, while reading the section “Prophets For A New Day,” the poem “Sit-ins” gave me hope. It reads “You were our first brave ones to defy their dissonance of hate / With your silence / With your willingness to suffer / Without violence / With courage and faith, convictions, and intelligence / The first to blaze a flaming path for justice / And awaken consciences.” Here I recognized that we’ve been through this type of injustice before, and instead of feeling hopeless, we need to fight back with courage, faith, convictions, and intelligence or we will never get on the path of justice. These are just two of the many instances where Walker’s poem collection can be used as a timeless helping-hand to black people all over the world experiencing turmoil in any era.

Overall, Margaret Walker’s This Is My Century: New and Collected Poems gave me so much more than I expected to receive. Not only are these poems written with style, skill, and grace, but you also get to see the author wear her heart on her sleeves. If this wasn’t enough, it also doubles as a self-help book in the way that you can always find an answer to your problems. Finally to top it all off, you really feel like there is someone out there who understands, and is not afraid to talk about the black experience. This poem collection is a must read for everyone! Particularly insightful is his novel Ich warte auf Wunder (I Wait for Miracles), which the artist wrote while in exile from the Nazi regime in 1941. Throughout this entertaining adventure, a parody of Heine's life emerges through amusing anecdotes. In fact, it is through Heine's literary work that the intent of many previously puzzling paintings and illustrations is revealed to us. This investigation uncovers an artist who was aware of, and fully participated in, Naturalism, Symbolism, and Jugendstil. Often, Heine was at the very forefront of these movements, helping to introduce them to a city struggling to maintain its exuberant artistic environment. Through Heine's genius we are not only introduced to a talented painter and illustrator but also to the radiant art world of Munich at the turn of the century.

About the Author
The Author: Timothy W. Hiles received his Ph.D. from The Pennsylvania State University in 1992 and is currently an assistant professor of Art History at the University of Tennessee. He is a specialist in the literary and cultural aspects of fin-de-siècle European art and has pursued this interdisciplinary approach in his papers and publications.
