Making Catfish Bait out of Government Boys: The Fight against Cattle Ticks and the Transformation of the Yeoman South (Environmental Histor

This first full-length study of the cattle tick eradication program in the United States offers a new perspective on the fate of the yeomanry in the twentieth-century South during a period when state and federal governments were both increasing and centralizing their authority. As Claire Strom relates the power struggles that complicated efforts to wipe out the Boophilus tick, she explains the motivations and concerns of each group involved, including large- and small-scale cattle farmers, scientists, and officials at all levels of government.

In the remote rural South―such as the piney woods of south Georgia and north Florida―resistance to mandatory treatment of cattle was unusually strong and sometimes violent. Cattle often ranged free, and their owners raised them mostly for local use rather than faraway markets. Cattle farmers in such areas, shows Strom, perceived a double threat in tick eradication mandates. In addition to their added costs, eradication schemes, with their top-down imposition of government expertise, were anathema to the yeomanry’s notions of liberty.

Strom contextualizes her southern focus within the national scale of the cattle industry, discussing, for instance, the contentious place of cattle drives in American agricultural history. Because Mexico was the primary source of potential tick reinfestation, Strom examines the political and environmental history of the Rio Grande, giving the book a transnational perspective. Debates about the political and economic culture of small farmers have tended to focus on earlier periods in American history. Here Strom shows that pockets of yeoman culture survived into the twentieth century and that these communities had the power to block (if only temporarily) the expansion of the American state.

Review

Strom gives the reader a look, literally, through an enormous microscope and then slowly pulls back the lens. . . . This creative organization is one of the book's strengths because it connects the environment, people, and politics in a way that many environmental histories claim to do, but few actually accomplish.

(Journal of Southern History)

Historians interested in environmental history and the new South will find the well-researched Making Catfish Bait out of Government Boys an important addition to the historiography. Despite the complicated science involved in tick eradication the work is accessible and timely, especially considering the issues surrounding the proper extent of federal power. The narrative, with plenty of shotgun blasts and dynamite explosions alongside helpful maps, makes this work an engaging and worthwhile read.

(Southwestern Historical Quarterly)

Extends the story of southern yeomen well into the twentieth century and uses the tick eradication issue as a window into their changing world. Anyone interested in the changing landscape of the American South will want to read Strom's fine and engaging book.

(Mark Wetherington author of Plain Folk's Fight: The Civil War and Reconstruction in Piney Woods Georgia)

Raises important new questions about the unusual role that yeomen played in the modernization of American agriculture. Strom offers intriguing insights into the problematic nature of technological and scientific change: while such change might 'lift all boats' in the abstract and long term, in the short term many supposed beneficiaries paid a steep price. She does a great job of telling that side of the story and of showing how resistance to new ideas and practices also helps shape their ultimate form and impact.

(Deborah Fitzgerald author of Every Farm a Factory: The Industrial Ideal in American Agriculture)

Claire Strom has woven together a wonderful tale of protozoa, insects, cattle, farmers, bureaucrats, politics, and geography revolving around the New South initiative to eradicate tick-borne Texas fever (babesiosis), the range of which roughly matched the contours of the South. This is a wide-ranging monograph in both topical and spatial terms, but Strom neatly ties everything together by using the southern yeoman farmer as the lens through which to view southern development.

(Georgia Historical Quarterly)

Making Catfish Bait out of Government Boys makes an important contribution to the agricultural, political, and cultural history of the South.

(Journal of Mississippi History)

About the Author
Claire Strom is Rapetti-Trunzo Professor of History at Rollins College and editor of the journal "Agricultural History." She is the author of "Profiting from the Plains: The Great Northern Railway" and "Corporate Development of the American West."

Finding Charity's Folk: Enslaved and Free Black Women in Maryland (Race in the Atlantic World, 1700-1900 Ser.), by Jessica Millward

Finding Charity’s Folk highlights the experiences of enslaved Maryland women who negotiated for their own freedom, many of whom have been largely lost to historical records. Based on more than fifteen hundred manumission records and numerous manuscript documents from a diversity of archives, Jessica Millward skillfully brings together African American social and gender history to provide a new means of using biography as a historical genre.

Millward opens with a striking discussion about how researching the life of a single enslaved woman, Charity Folks, transforms our understanding of slavery and freedom in Revolutionary America. For African American women such as Folks, freedom, like enslavement, was tied to a bondwoman’s reproductive capacities. Their offspring were used to perpetuate the slave economy. Finding loopholes in the law meant that enslaved women could give birth to and raise free children. For Millward, Folks demonstrates the fluidity of the boundaries between slavery and freedom, which was due largely to the gendered space occupied by enslaved women. The gendering of freedom influenced notions of liberty, equality, and race in what became the new nation and had profound implications for African American women’s future interactions with the state.

The Art of Dying: Suicide in the Works of Kate Chopin and Sylvia Plath (American University Studies), by Deborah S. Gentry

Although the representation of suicide is commonplace in literature, few studies have explicitly dealt with the meaning of suicide in the works of women writers. The Art of Dying applies theories concerning the division of women literary figures into angels or monsters to representative literary suicides of the nineteenth century, including the suicides of women characters in works by Kate Chopin and Sylvia Plath.
The Awakening by Kate Chopin is often misunderstood by critics who read it using the Romantic paradigm. Chopin breaks that paradigm by presenting the suicide of Edna Pontellier as heroic. Suicide is a prevalent motif and theme in two works by Sylvia Plath, The Bell Jar and Ariel. An extensive analysis of Plath’s last poem «Edge» portrays the suicide of the speaker as a calm and heroic act in keeping with the tone set by Chopin in The Awakening.
The Art of Dying concludes by exploring women’s need for self-actualization within the framework of love, marriage, and motherhood – institutions that have always demanded from women an unnatural and harmful degree of unselfishness. The inherent message in the works of artists such as Chopin and Plath is that women should not have to die in order to live.

Plagued by geographic isolation, poverty, and acute shortages of health professionals and hospital beds, the South was dubbed by Surgeon General Thomas Parran “the nation’s number one health problem.” The improvement of southern, rural, and black health would become a top priority of the U.S. Public Health Service during the Roosevelt and Truman administrations.

Karen Kruse Thomas details how NAACP lawsuits pushed southern states to equalize public services and facilities for blacks just as wartime shortages of health personnel and high rates of draft rejections generated broad support for health reform. Southern Democrats leveraged their power in Congress and used the war effort to call for federal aid to uplift the South. The language of regional uplift, Thomas contends, allowed southern liberals to aid blacks while remaining silent on race. Reformers embraced, at least initially, the notion of “deluxe Jim Crow”―support for health care that maintained segregation. Thomas argues that this strategy was, in certain respects, a success, building much-needed hospitals and training more black doctors.

By the 1950s, deluxe Jim Crow policy had helped to weaken the legal basis for segregation. Thomas traces this transformation at the national level and in North Carolina, where “deluxe Jim Crow reached its fullest potential.” This dual focus allows her to examine the shifting alliances―between blacks and liberal whites, southerners and northerners, activists and doctors―that drove policy. Deluxe Jim Crow provides insight into a variety of historical debates, including the racial dimensions of state building, the nature of white southern liberalism, and the role of black professionals during the long civil rights movement.

Review

Deluxe Jim Crow will become the authoritative book on health policy and race in the twentieth century. Thomas's breadth of research is astounding. Historians, health policy analysts, politicians, and consumers will have much to learn here.

(Susan M. Reverby author of Examining Tuskegee: The Infamous Syphilis Study and Its Legacy)

It is now conventional wisdom that the premises and policies of the New Deal were irretrievably racial; legislative concessions and local administration sustained 'Jim Crow' in the shadow of an emerging welfare state. Thomas’s careful study of health policy in the South complicates this picture. By any measure, federal health policy made things substantially better―for the region, for its African American citizens, and for its African American medical professionals. Deluxe Jim Crow is a strong book which should find a wide audience among historians of the South and health scholars.

(Colin Gordon author of Dead on Arrival: The Politics of Health Care in Twentieth-Century America)

The book was meticulously researched and is well written. It provides a comprehensive account of an aspect of US history rarely addressed in other general health policy books.

(Choice)

This richly detailed and beautifully written book traces U.S. health policy from New Deal attempts at introducing racial justice into criteria for federal funding for social projects, through the Truman administrations desegregation of the Armed Services (including the Veterans’ Administration hospitals), and into the McCarthy-era backlash.

(Norma Smith Oral History Review)

Kruse aims to bring the realm of health care back into a conversation about racial change that has focused primarily on the arena of education. . . . Kruse has written what will likely become the definitive survey of the state of health care in the South in the New Deal and World War Two era for a long time to come.

(Renee Romano Social History of Medicine)

Drawing on meticulous, comprehensive research in published sources, archival materials, and oral interviews, Thomas looks at the debates over and implementation of state and federal health programs in the South, with particular attention given to North Carolina. The result is a book that illuminates the key influence of region and race on health politices in the first half of the twentieth century. It also sheds much-needed light on the neglected topic of medical care in relation to civil rights struggles in the critical pre-Brown v. Board of Education period.

(Lynn Marie Pohl Bulletin of the History of Medicine)

Karen Kruse Thomas traces in detail – minute, eye-watering detail with charts, tables and graphs – the history of this aspect of segregation. . . .surely the definitive [book] on this aspect of segregation. . . .This is outstanding scholarship.

(Charles Wheeler News & Record/)

Deluxe Jim Crow should appeal to those with an interest in the history of US politics, health policy, medicine, race, and the South.

(Elena Conis Historian)

Karen Kruse Thomas deftly blends the histories of civil rights and the politics of the New Deal era with the history of medicine and health care in the United States. The result is a masterly treatment of an even stranger element in the career of Jim Crow. (Andrew M. Manis Journal of Southern History)

Karen Kruse Thomas’s Deluxe Jim Crow is a welcome addition . . . and will do much to help us understand various policies and movements that have attacked racial health disparities. (Merlin Chowkwanyun Journal of African American History)

A Valuable Resource Meticulously Researched
By Dan Shub
Deluxe Jim Crow is an excellent book that chronicles the racial disparity in medical care and medical education in the American South during the period leading to desegregation. It is meticulously researched providing an in-depth look at a critical aspect of the policy "separate but equal". It is a valuable resource for anyone interested in American health policy and probably the best book on the topic.

The Dance Boots: Stories, by Linda Grover

In this stirring collection of linked stories, Linda LeGarde Grover portrays an Ojibwe community struggling to follow traditional ways of life in the face of a relentlessly changing world.

In the title story an aunt recounts the harsh legacy of Indian boarding schools that tried to break the indigenous culture. In doing so she passes on to her niece the Ojibwe tradition of honoring elders through their stories. In “Refugees Living and Dying in the West End of Duluth,” this same niece comes of age in the 1970s against the backdrop of her forcibly dispersed family. A cycle of boarding schools, alcoholism, and violence haunts these stories even as the characters find beauty and solace in their large extended families.

With its attention to the Ojibwe language, customs, and history, this unique collection of riveting stories illuminates the very nature of storytelling. The Dance Boots narrates a century’s evolution of Native Americans making choices and compromises, often dictated by a white majority, as they try to balance survival, tribal traditions, and obligations to future generations.

From Publishers Weekly
Winner of this year's Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction, Grover's stories work back in time to retrace the rupturing experience of Western schooling on the Ojibwe tribes in Minnesota during the early 20th century. In the title story, narrator Artense's beloved Aunt Shirley is dying of lung cancer as she recounts "the breaking of a culture through the education of its young." In addition to the history, Artense, the oldest child and the first high school graduate, is given Shirley's cherished dancing boots. The intergenerational key is grandma Maggie, who, in "Maggie and Louis," is educated at a mission school and meets her future husband while working as a teacher's assistant at the forbidding Harrod boarding school, which Indian children, taken from their reservations, are forced to attend. Later, in "Three Seasons," Maggie, now a worn-out mother and wife, leaves her drunken and abusive husband and takes her children to live with her alcoholic sister. Even in escape, Maggie has a harsh road ahead, and it's her generous spirit that permeates the stories of the later generations and lends this collection a bright and determined vitality.

From Booklist
In linked stories, Grover portrays the inhabitants of an imaginary Ojibwe reservation north of Duluth, Minnesota. While Artense, the narrator, attends community college and goes on to graduate school, her aunt Shirley, who lives in Duluth, calls her every couple of weeks to tell her family stories, which Artense passes on to us. Shirley’s multigenerational tale involves Indian boarding schools, homesickness, and racism. Readers also meet Grandma Maggie, who hits her husband with a frying pan, then takes off with her two youngest boys because her three oldest are already at the Indian school; Louis, Maggie’s first husband, whom she meets at the Harrod Indian School; and Sonny and Mickey, who repeatedly escape from Harrod. Before Shirley dies, she gives Artense her suede beaded dancing boots, and Grover writes lyrically of the first time Artense wears them to a powwow, while watching her own daughters join the line of dancing grandmothers, aunts, and cousins. Grover’s collection, for which she won the Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction, is simply mesmerizing. --Deborah Donovan

Review

Simply mesmerizing.

(Booklist)

Linda LeGarde Grover knows how to end a story―and manages to achieve both circularity and closure in each and every one. This is an impressive feat in and of itself, but for a collection of linked stories like The Dance Boots, which twist and tie and loop back on one another, the achievement is even more remarkable.

(ForeWord Reviews)

A bright and determined vitality.

(Publishers Weekly)

With stunning sentences and other stylistic elements reminiscent of Hemingway, Wolfe, Tan and others, this collection dazzles with its complex characters, rustic settings, and authentic situations.

(Dark Sky magazine)

The powerful Ojibwe women in Linda LeGarde Grover’s Dance Boots tell stories in 'the rhythm and pattern of repeating and echoing, re-echoing and returning,' the pattern that keeps them strong. They need to be strong in the face of a terrible monster, one no less ferocious than those in Ojibwe traditional tales, one that steals children and returns them altered, alien, broken: the boarding schools. These are stories of survival as well, and as we follow the rhythm of her narrative we find ourselves joining the dance of a culture resurgent, a dance that returns lost children, that begins to heal a world.

(Heid E. Erdrich Author of National Monuments)

Grover’s sense of character and setting in these stories is so immediate, so vital. She has put the Mozhay Point Indian Reservation on the literary map.

(Geary Hobson Author of The Last of the Ofos)

Grover neither sentimentalizes nor victimizes indigenous people but rather shows them as the complex humans they are.

(Minnesota Reads)

In eight beautifully crafted Ojibwe stories, Grover’s characters, members of the LaForce family, learn to survive Indian boarding school, a brutal marriage, and even how to set pins in a bowling alley all the while taking care to remember the ancestors and the road home. Whether home is the mythic Mozhay Point Indian Reservation, a clapboard house, or a horse paradise of woods near Duluth, Minnesota, Grover’s The Dance Boots is an Ojibwe jingle dance that bounced me off the page, and back on again. A wonderful read!

(LeAnne Howe Author of Shell Shaker and Miko Kings: An Indian Baseball Story)

Through her first-person stories, told in the voices of Ojibwe men or women, Grover leads readers to better understand what they have never experienced. (Indian Country Today)

I bid for a pair of boots on e-bay
By Laurel A. Lawrence
This seems to be a series of short stories collected in short fiction book.
Characters are memorable but names are forgettable and a sad tale, indeed.
Ojibwes and the story of being taken from their homes as children are only
a minor part of story but is a very powerful element in Grover's novel
about modern times in north country. It is already a winner of awards for
short fiction and will be sure to be discussed by many in the manner of
HOSTILES AND FRIENDLIES for years to come. This book is very good as it had
the ring of truth and covered living and dying, and not just in Duluth.
I highly recommend it.

The Dance Boots
By Janie B.
Linda LeGarde Grover does a wonderful job of tying Native American history and culture into a snapshot of the circle of life. This collection of short stories can be read cover to cover as a novel, or a story at a time. The cover itself is beautiful, and the stories inside are just as alluring. Loved the book.

Essential American Reading
By Richie Swanson
The Dance Boots and Grover’s novel, The Road Back to Sweetgrass, are relatively unknown, but I give them my Nobel Prize for Literature. When I came of age, I didn’t understand why I could have been drafted for the Vietnam War, or what it meant. When I read Tim O’Brien’s Going after Cacciato and The Things They Carries, and Robert Butler’s Alleys of Eden and A Good Scent from a Strange Mountain, I understood what so many people went through in Vietnam. Later, when I traveled extensively through the American southwest, I couldn’t understand what it meant and how it was to live as an Indian on a reservation. Leslie Silk’s Ceremony and Storyteller opened the world to me. Grover’s story collection and novel did the same for me—they speak the heart of North America’s history since the time of European settlement. –Richie Swanson

Precarious Worlds: Contested Geographies of Social Reproduction (Geographies of Justice and Social Transformation Ser.)From University o

This collection contributes to the theoretical literature on social reproduction―defined by Marx as the necessary labor to arrive the next day at the factory gate―and extended by feminist geographers and others into complex understandings of the relationship between paid labor and the unpaid work of daily life. The volume explores new terrain in social reproduction with a focus on the challenges posed by evolving theories of embodiment and identity, nonhuman materialities, and diverse economies.

Reflecting and expanding on ongoing debates within feminist geography, with additional cross-disciplinary contributions from sociologists and political scientists, Precarious Worlds explores the productive possibilities of social reproduction as an ontology, a theoretical lens, and an analytical framework for what Geraldine Pratt has called “a vigorous, materialist transnational feminism.”

Damn Good Dogs!: The Real Story of Uga, the University of Georgia's Bulldog Mascots, by Kent Hannon, Sonny Seiler

The name Uga is synonymous with the Georgia Bulldogs, a perennial powerhouse among the top college football teams in the country. These English bulldogs are so revered that when they die, they are buried in a mausoleum at Sanford Stadium. But Uga is also a family pet, and Damn Good Dogs! gives readers a rare glimpse into the personal history of these nationally acclaimed mascots. Filled with colorful anecdotes―such as Uga V’s famous lunge at an Auburn player, his appearance in several Hollywood films, and Sports Illustrated’s decision to put him on the cover of its 1997 college sports issue―Damn Good Dogs! provides the backstory to more than fifty years of collegiate sports history. Wherever Georgia plays football, its famous mascot is there. At home games he stays cool in an air-conditioned doghouse or sits perched atop a bag of ice. When Herschel Walker won the Heisman Trophy in 1982, Uga IV became the only four-legged attendee at the Heisman banquet. And that―believe it or not―is just a small part of the history of the Georgia mascots. Lavishly illustrated with more than five hundred photos and images of memorabilia from the Seilers’ private collection, this edition features more than eighty new pages of material on Uga VI, Uga VII, Uga VIII, and Russ, the super sub―including an Uga VIII photo album that is sure to be a fan favorite.

Publication of this book was made possible, in part, by the President’s Venture Fund through generous gifts of the University of Georgia Partners.

A portion of the proceeds from sales of this book benefits the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine.

Review

"Our mascot represents everything we want our players to be--proud, loyal, tenacious, fierce, relentless, and a great representative of the university. This book captures all of these attributes."--Mark Richt, head football coach at the University of Georgia

"There are certain things in sports that need no explanation . . . Uga's one of them. He's an icon."--Greg McGarity, athletic director at the University of Georgia

"Let the word go forth to every present and future Georgia football player or coach. You may win the Heisman Trophy. You may capture the national championship. But no matter what you do, you will remain the A-Rod to Uga's Jeter. In the state of Georgia, Uga rules."--Bob Ryan, "Boston Globe" columnist and ESPN commentator

"If I ever got in trouble down South, first thing I'd do is call Sonny Seiler. If I ever got bored, I'd ask Sonny to pull up a chair. Pick up "Damn Good Dogs!" and you'll see what I mean. It's a damn good read!"--John Berendt, author of "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil"

DAM GOOD BOOK!!!
By Danielle Brooks
I remember falling in love with the mascot when I was little simply because of the colors and the cuteness that is the Bulldog face...years later and all grown up I'm a Bulldog fan still and this book has been simply amazing to read. It's very easy reading and informative and insightful. I feel like I've met the Seilers and UGA through this book, now I just hope one day to actually make it to Georgia to turn that into a reality. This book instantly became a favorite of mine and I will read it over numerous times...question is which son of mine do I pry it away from cause they are wanting to read it as well!!

Great book for a diehard Georgia fan.
By Shug
A great look into the most iconic mascot in sports. Whether you are a Dawg lover, or simply a DOG lover, it is chock full of photos and stories that showcase Uga as both a revered mascot and a beloved family pet. (The only reason I don't give it five stars is because the seller I bought it from sold me a previous edition of this book under the new edition listing.) Regardless, I enjoyed it. I hope the Seilers release a new edition soon featuring Uga IX and X... Russ was my favorite of them all!

Weirding the War: Stories from the Civil War's Ragged Edges (UnCivil Wars Ser.)From University of Georgia Press

“It is well that war is so terrible,” Robert E. Lee reportedly said, “or we would grow too fond of it.” The essays collected here make the case that we have grown too fond of it, and therefore we must make the war terrible again. Taking a “freakonomics” approach to Civil War studies, each contributor uses a seemingly unusual story, incident, or phenomenon to cast new light on the nature of the war itself. Collectively the essays remind us that war is always about damage, even at its most heroic and even when certain people and things deserve to be damaged.

Here then is not only the grandness of the Civil War but its more than occasional littleness. Here are those who profited by the war and those who lost by it―and not just those who lost all save their honor, but those who lost their honor too. Here are the cowards, the coxcombs, the belles, the deserters, and the scavengers who hung back and so survived, even thrived. Here are dark topics like torture, hunger, and amputation. Here, in short, is war.

Review

Weirding the War is an eclectic mix of absorbing essays on the American Civil War. It shatters conventional paradigms, asking new questions and offering fresh insights into a war that continues to fascinate, even obsess, both academic and popular audiences.

(Victoria Bynum author of The Long Shadow of the Civil War: Southern Dissent and Its Legacies)

Saying something truly new about the American Civil War seems impossible, but here is a book that offers an explosion of new perspectives and insights, often surprising and sometimes disturbing. Read this book and you will never be able to imagine again whatever Civil War you imagined before.

(Edward L. Ayers winner of the Bancroft Prize for In the Presence of Mine Enemies: The Civil War in the Heart of America, 1859–1863)

Emphasizing selfishness and its victims, not sacrifice, the authors provide insights into the war's cultural and social history by looking at persons on the margins, oftentimes considered 'weird' by society's mainstream. . . . Weirding the War matters not because its characters exhibited oddities or peculiarities, but rather because of their intensely human, commonplace experiences, strengths and weaknesses. Their mundane stories remind us of the 'weirdness' of war generally and the connection between individuals in the past and ourselves.

(John David Smith News & Observer)

Berry and his contributors manage to accomplish their goal and weird the Civil War. . . . Ironically, it is by breaking Civil War history from the limitations of the Civil War narrative that we can introduce twenty-first-century Americans to their counterparts in the nineteenth century―weird.

(Barbara A. Gannon Journal of American History)

Weirding the War proves that there are still many questions left to be asked and answered about this popular time in American history. These essays collected by Dr. Stephen Berry expand the boundaries of what historians have looked at, and bring new ideas to the forefront of current Civil War thinking.

(Kristopher Allen Southern Historian)

[Berry’s] manifesto-like introduction calls for new questions, new themes, and new topics that turn upside down what we think we know about the [Civil War]. . . . The animating force behind these essays, and the books that will follow, is to nudge students, buffs, and popular audiences to replace the Civil War’s inspirational story with the darker version.

(Joan Waugh Journal of Southern History)

Overall, whether in soldier, civilian, or veteran studies, the future direction of the new military history emanates from Weirding the War.

(Matthew E. Stanley Register of the Kentucky Historical Society)

About the Author

Unusual or Overlooked Aspects of the Civil War
By A. A. Nofi
A summary of the review on StrategyPage.Com:

'In his introduction to these essays, originally presented at symposium in 2009, Prof. Berry (Georgia), who previously gave us House of Abraham: Lincoln and the Todds, A Family Divided by War, notes that we have heard much about the politics, battles, commanders, and "homesick soldiers and their wives," but "less from soldiers who looted bodies and joyfully blew things up; from men who guiltlessly made money from the war; from madams trafficking in the war's wake; and from African American troops who decided desertion was the better part of valor."

'Each of the essays, by nearly 20 scholars, examines some seemingly trivial subject. So we learn about William Quantrill's adolescent "wife," soldier slang, an historian's encounters with death, hunger in the wartime South, the war's effect on courtship and pre-marital sex, a Kentucky cold snap and its influence on the emancipation of thousands, the origins of the KKK, desertion among black troops, PTSD, and more, even "what if" James A. Whistler had not washed out of West Point. These often give useful insights into the war and its aftermath, and make this book a valuable, informative, and often amusing read.'

A new view of an old topic
By James Tauber
As the name implies, the book provides a collection of essays that give a rather unusual perspective on the Civil War. Well written and researched, the writers explore the type of questions that might be asked by two drunken frat boys during a history cram. While the topics might be odd, these essays discuss the fringe of war in an engaging manner. Many use their topics to highlight broader impacts to the general population or soldiers, arriving at mainstream topics through the side-door.

Fear and Trembling? Shock and Awe? Which set of statements best describes the emotions surrounding the assessment of writing ability in educational settings? This book – the first historical study of its kind – begins with Harvard University’s 1874 requirement that first-year student applicants submit a short composition as part of the admissions process; the book concludes with the College Board’s 2005 requirement for an essay to be submitted as part of the new SAT®: Reasoning Test. Intended for teachers who must prepare students to submit their writing for formal assessment, administrators who must make critical decisions based on test scores, and policy makers who must allocate resources based on evaluation systems, On a Scale provides a much-needed historical and conceptual background to questions arising from national attention to student writing ability.

« Norbert Elliot's 'On A Scale' is a timely treatment of one of today's hot-test educational issues -- writing assessment. Elliot provides superb historical background, demonstrating how the testing of writing has always been fraught with difficulty in attaining reliability and validity. Today's teachers and scholars will benefit from Elliot's careful examination of all the sources, including his valuable look at the ETS archives. In an impressively researched volume, Elliot presents the best single overview of the topic, a book that is sure to become the definitive work on its subject.

-'On a Scale' will stand as a landmark study of writing assessment in the United States. Norbert Elliot combines thorough research with extraordinary insight into the people who shaped literacy instruction and the contexts in which they worked. Elliot's book changes our thinking about how and why we judge writing.- (Lester Faigley, Robert Adger Law and Thos. H.
