Weeds of the Midwestern United States and Central Canada
By Uncle Omar
I purchased this book to aid me in my job as weed control officer. I had seen a copy, and noted that this volume contains some examples that are not found in "Weeds of the West" and I thought it would be a good supplement to available references.

The photos are generally better (than in "Weeds of the West"), and more illustrative of weeds "in the wild", so this is a plus.

Another feature I greatly appreciate is the listing of toxicity of each example described.

A third asset is the inclusion of any known "colloquial" names for the weed in question. These vary greatly from one region to another, and what is commonly accepted nomenclature in North Dakota may be gibberish in Nebraska or Ohio. This "thesaurus" of common names helps alleviate those confusing differences.

However, I find it rather disappointing that several weeds which are common in my region are missing from the pages. Specifically, Black Henbane (to name only one), which is notably toxic to humans (and probably livestock), is ignored. This weed is relatively common, but most of the general population is not familiar with its identification, nor with its potential for physical damage.

Another negative impression is the "range of distribution" charts included. These are woefully inadequate, apparently due to the fact that the volume seems to have some data that is grossly outdated. Burdock is shown as having wide distribution, but absent in most of California, Arizona and New Mexico. My personal observations include seeing miles of it distributed along the highways of those states, and growing much taller than the description in the book. If the information is known to be in error, perhaps the resource data is questionable, or so it would seem.

Perhaps the most troublesome aspect (for me) of this book is that it is arranged in a manner which gives the impression that it is quite likely intended as a reference book for a Botany Major. This shortcoming is very similar to "Weeds of the West" and the book is not as easy to use as it should be, for general information available to the public, who merely want to know (quickly) what a particular plant might be, and if they should have concerns about its growth in their area. If the name is unknown, one must page through much of the volume until a plant looks familiar. A thumb index (do publishers still do those?) or a coding/index by flower color, or leaf shape, might be of much assistance to the uninitiated (but curious) mind.

Certainly, much of the overall content is also available on the internet, but even those sites that offer color-coded or "leaf-shape and distribution"-type search parameters are a bit clumsy for those of us who have not taken a biology course since high school or college. Also, on the job, taking the time to search through thousands of listings to find the plant in question would take too much time away from actual work.

Overall, I am not sorry I bought the book. It is quite helpful to me on the job, but there are several stumbling blocks to what I consider "ease of use."

Don't waste your money!
By The Weed Guy
Two thirds of the content of this book is recycled from the error ridden Weeds of the South by the same authors. The numerous mis-identifications and many instances of mis-information are compounded by the fact that the authors chose to use a very technical style in their descriptions, thus requiring a glossary of over 400 technical terms, of which the authors demonstrate a repeated lack of understanding. The only valid purpose of this and the previous Weeds of the South publication, is as a tool to extract funds from the many chemical companies that funded the publications.

Great Weed Book!
By Kat
"Weeds of the Midwestern United States and Central Canada," is a VERY good weed identification book! Seedling pictures are included with adult pictures of the weeds! VERY helpful! Not many other weed books are as consistant with the seedling pictures.

LOVE the book! :)

Why Men Are Afraid of Women: Stories (Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction Ser.), by Francois Camoin

The tie that binds men and women, that makes men do absurd things that they will very likely be sorry for later, is at the center of this prize-winning collection of stories.

There is, for example, Jack Segal, who is thirty-six and who owns a record store on Ocean Boulevard in Santa Monica and who has fallen in love―badly and madly in love―with the fourteen-yearold daughter of his friend Katzman. Segal can’t think. He eats, but it doesn’t taste like anything. He drives the freeways, floats above the city lights, and finds himself almost wishing that the Great Quake would come and solve everything for him.

Some of Camoin’s characters are running: Diehl, from the necessity of finishing his second novel, of deciding once and for all the fate of its central character, who may be Diehl himself; the jogger-narrator of the story “Peacock Blue,” from the pain of his life (“What lucky fools marathon runners are. They run for joy.”); Loveman, to El Paso and a hustler’s dream of paradise that turns into something else.

Review

Should be applauded by everyone who reads or writes short fiction.

(Kenyon Review)

The men in Camoin’s stories are believable as they struggle awkwardly to relate to wives, girlfriends, little girls. . . . Fine examples of short fiction by [a] gifted author.

The Mulatta Concubine: Terror, Intimacy, Freedom, and Desire in the Black Transatlantic (Race in the Atlantic World, 1700-1900 Ser.), by L

Popular and academic representations of the free mulatta concubine repeatedly depict women of mixed black African and white racial descent as defined by their sexual attachment to white men, and thus they offer evidence of the means to and dimensions of their freedom within Atlantic slave societies. In The Mulatta Concubine, Lisa Ze Winters contends that the uniformity of these representations conceals the figure’s centrality to the practices and production of diaspora.

Beginning with a meditation on what captive black subjects may have seen and remembered when encountering free women of color living in slave ports, the book traces the echo of the free mulatta concubine across the physical and imaginative landscapes of three Atlantic sites: Gorée Island, New Orleans, and Saint Domingue (Haiti). Ze Winters mines an archive that includes a 1789 political petition by free men of color, a 1737 letter by a free black mother on behalf of her daughter, antebellum newspaper reports, travelers’ narratives, ethnographies, and Haitian Vodou iconography. Attentive to the tenuousness of freedom, Ze Winters argues that the concubine figure’s manifestation as both historical subject and African diasporic goddess indicates her centrality to understanding how free and enslaved black subjects performed gender, theorized race and freedom, and produced their own diasporic identities.

Caribbean and Southern: Transnational Perspectives on the U.S. South (Southern Anthropological Society Proceedings Ser.)From Brand: Univ

Ranging across the colonial and postcolonial eras of the American South and the Caribbean, the six essays in this volume take a fresh look at the regions' transnational linkages. With their focus on border zones, hybridity, and creolization, the essays challenge our notions about the cultural and economic trajectories of the African diaspora in this part of the world. For instance, was the movement of slaves seeking freedom in the United States always south to north? Or was the movement of slaves in bondage always westward, from Africa to the Caribbean or the Americas?

One consequence of the work presented in this volume is an expansion of the physical borders of the Caribbean-southern sphere to include, for example, the Chesapeake Bay area. Lesser-known populations, such as the Black Seminoles, also gain heightened visibility. Runaway slaves who first allied themselves with Florida Indians, the Black Seminoles later migrated to the Bahamas. Other topics covered include foodways, environmental justice and Caribbean tourism, and religious or celebratory traditions of Vodou, Jonkonnu, and Rocks.

Review

A very important and timely book. It makes an excellent contribution to anthropology, Caribbean studies, and southern studies, as well as to African diaspora studies. Regis and her colleagues very successfully illustrate the ways in which the U.S. South has been historically and culturally linked to the Caribbean, calling for new discussions of transnationalism, hybridity, and creolization. The authors map Caribbean and southern connections in terms of some of the historic patterns of migration, foodways, and cultural practices that are evident today. From colonial societies, migration practices, and cultural production, these chapters, in sum, illustrate the interconnectedness of people and places in the U.S. South and the Caribbean—redefining and repositioning the South as a site of inquiry and analysis.

(Kimberly Eison Simmons University of South Carolina)

Innovative study of the transcolonial and transnational links between the Caribbean and the U.S. South.

(Journal of Southern History)

Caribbean and Southern is an important contribution to this ongoing project of investigating the U.S. South through a global lens. Editor Helen Regis and her contributors identify some of the rich connections that exist between the South and the Caribbean, demonstrating how the analysis of one region cannot truly be analyzed without examining the other. . . . Caribbean and Southern is a well-illustrated book written in a style that makes it accessible to student readers as well as faculty researchers.

Tyrannicide: Forging an American Law of Slavery in Revolutionary South Carolina and Massachusetts (Studies in the Legal History of the Sout

Tyrannicide uses a captivating narrative to unpack the experiences of slavery and slave law in South Carolina and Massachusetts during the Revolutionary Era. In 1779, during the midst of the American Revolution, thirty-four South Carolina slaves escaped aboard a British privateer and survived several naval battles until the Massachusetts brig Tyrannicide led them to Massachusetts. Over the next four years, the slaves became the center of a legal dispute between the two states. The case affected slave law and highlighted the profound differences between how the “terrible institution” was practiced in the North and the South, in ways that would foreground issues eventually leading to the Civil War.

Emily Blanck uses the Tyrannicide affair and the slaves involved as a lens through which to view contrasting slaveholding cultures and ideas of African American democracy. Blanck’s examination of the debate analyzes crucial questions: How could the colonies unify when they viewed one of America’s foundational institutions in fundamentally different ways? How would fugitive slaves be handled legally and ethically? Blanck shows how the legal and political battles that resulted from the affair reveal much about revolutionary ideals and states’ rights at a time when notions of the New Republic―and philosophies about the unity of American states―were being created.

Review
Sixty years before the Amistad case forced a nation to confront the vast gulf between its pretensions to liberty and the harsh reality of human bondage, a now-forgotten affair strained the tenuous bonds that held the young republic together. When the brig Tyrannicide captured thirty-four Carolina slaves who had escaped to a British privateer, the ensuing case raised troubling issues of what freedom meant in the postcolonial world. Emily Blanck deftly combines high drama with exhaustive research in this rich and important study. (Douglas R. Egerton author of Death or Liberty: African Americans and Revolutionary America?)

Anyone interested in the Revolutionary period, slavery, or the development of slave law in the new nation, will find use for Blanck’s succinct work. (Jeffrey Thomas Perry Civil War Book Review)

Tyrannicide is a short and easy read, and its concise descriptions of the history (economic, political, and legal) of slavery in Massachusetts and South Carolina both in the colonial and revolutionary periods make it ideals for any class exploring slavery and abolition in the era of the American Revolution. (C. Messer H-Net Reviews)

Blanck’s ambitious work . . . reminds readers . . . that forging the U.S. government was, in large measure, about forging salve law. She reaches this conclusion with innovative sources and methodology. (Christine E. Sears The Journal of Southern History)

Daredevil Research: Re-creating Analytic Practice gathers together ten research projects that seek to transform thinking about analytic practice and the construction of research knowledge. By experimenting with alternative models of representation unconstrained by the weight of traditional research protocols, the authors create multiple spaces for imagining how to differently identify issues for inquiry, select modes of analysis, and inscribe «data» into transmittable form. At once a production of research knowledge and a conceptual field for meaning-making, Daredevil Research suggests the possibilities of analytic practice in imaginative, independent space.

Review
-The writing in this book is not just about a kind of cultural analysis; it is literary, artistic, poetic; it presents an extraordinary model of post-positivist medium and method. It is an excellent choice for social science research courses, encouraging students to experiment with both form and content. Books about -qualitative- research are typically quite tedious. They spend an inordinate amount of time justifying their existence, usually in positivist terms. This book talks the talk and walks the walk. Even when presenting its theoretical framework, its author's use of language is sparkling, even dazzling. The array of verbs, nouns and adjectives in the first, introductory chapter is quite delightful. I could not have imagined there were so many different ways to describe and define this kind of research, to deconstruct and, simultaneously, to reconstruct its meanings and metaphors.- (Kathleen Casey, University of North Carolina, Greensboro)"

Neo-Segregation Narratives: Jim Crow in Post-Civil Rights American Literature, by Brian Norman

This study of what Brian Norman terms a neo–segregation narrative tradition examines literary depictions of life under Jim Crow that were written well after the civil rights movement.

From Toni Morrison’s first novel, The Bluest Eye, to bestselling black fiction of the 1980s to a string of recent work by black and nonblack authors and artists, Jim Crow haunts the post–civil rights imagination. Norman traces a neo–segregation narrative tradition―one that developed in tandem with neo–slave narratives―by which writers return to a moment of stark de jure segregation to address contemporary concerns about national identity and the persistence of racial divides. These writers upset dominant national narratives of achieved equality, portraying what are often more elusive racial divisions in what some would call a postracial present.

Norman examines works by black writers such as Lorraine Hansberry, Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, David Bradley, Wesley Brown, Suzan-Lori Parks, and Colson Whitehead, films by Spike Lee, and other cultural works that engage in debates about gender, Black Power, blackface minstrelsy, literary history, and whiteness and ethnicity. Norman also shows that multiethnic writers such as Sherman Alexie and Tom Spanbauer use Jim Crow as a reference point, extending the tradition of William Faulkner’s representations of the segregated South and John Howard Griffin’s notorious account of crossing the color line from white to black in his 1961 work Black Like Me.

Review

Provocative and illuminating . . . Neo–Segregation Narratives is crucial reading for anyone interested in deciphering the malleable manifestations of the color line in a postracial culture.

(Elizabeth Abel University of California, Berkeley)

Offering an original and provocative approach to the literary representation of segregation, Neo–Segregation Narratives demands that we think differently, and much more creatively, about the historical timeline of Jim Crow and the complex persistence of American racial divisions.

(Eric J. Sundquist author of King’s Dream: The Legacy of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” Speech)

By defining key figures, practices, and comparative approaches, Neo-Segregation Narratives clarifies and validates the work of scholarship on the literature of the Civil Rights Movement.

(Julie Buckner Armstrong MELUS )

Norman’s reorienting anatomy of his chosen texts and his energetic defense of his conceptual and methodological underpinnings gives this study a rich blend of poise and provocation that has staying power.

(John S. Wright Journal of America History)

Neo-Segregation Narratives is an expansive and inventive work of scholarship, intrepid in its declaration of a new literary tradition. . . . Norman’s study leaves me reflecting on this intriguing suggestion that literature can achieve forms of ‘integration’ that continue to elude us in American life.

(Heidi E. Bollinger Callaloo)

At-Risk: Stories, by Amina Gautier

In Amina Gautier’s Brooklyn, some kids make it and some kids don’t, but not in simple ways or for stereotypical reasons. Gautier’s stories explore the lives of young African Americans who might all be classified as “at-risk,” yet who encounter different opportunities and dangers in their particular neighborhoods and schools and who see life through the lens of different family experiences.

Gautier’s focus is on quiet daily moments, even in extraordinary lives; her characters do not stand as emblems of a subculture but live and breathe as people. In “The Ease of Living,” the young teen Jason is sent down south to spend the summer with his grandfather after witnessing the double murder of his two best friends, and he is not happy about it. A season of sneaking into as many movies as possible on one ticket or dunking girls at the pool promises to turn into a summer of shower chairs and the smell of Ben-Gay in the unimaginably backwoods town of Tallahassee. In “Pan Is Dead,” two half-siblings watch as the heroin-addicted father of the older one works his way back into their mother’s life; in “Dance for Me,” a girl on scholarship at a posh Manhattan school teaches white girls to dance in the bathroom in order to be invited to a party.

As teenagers in complicated circumstances, each of Gautier’s characters is pushed in many directions. To succeed may entail unforgiveable compromises, and to follow their desires may lead to catastrophe. Yet within these stories they exist and can be seen as they are, in the moment of choosing.

Review

"In these always engaging stories, Amina Gautier reminds us that behind the disturbing headlines are vibrant young people whose lives matter immeasurably. Gautier employs unflinching honesty to capture those lives, and she does so with clarity, dignity and genuine insight. "At-Risk" will break your heart even as it leaves you full of hope. It is a truly lovely book."--David Haynes, author of "The Full Matilda"

"In this wonderful collection Amina Gautier writes with exhilarating insight and confidence about the lives of teenagers who are indeed at risk from themselves, their families and their friends. These are urgent and important stories."--Margot Livesey, author of "The House on Fortune Street" and "Eva Moves The Furniture"

"[T]he stories in "At-Risk" constitute a strong, promising performance and suggest that much more excellent work lies ahead. . . . Baxter, Sterling, and Gautier, in particular, write tales that are memorable precisely because they have an authentic texture that helps, in O'Connor's formulation, make actual the mysterious position of our lives on earth."--Greg Johnson, "The Georgia Review"

"It was no surprise to us that she won such a high-status award. . . . What is more notable is the quality of the stories, which also update the usual Flannery O'Connor winner's content: citified, frisky, adventurous and redolent of social concerns. Gautier's stories do not resemble anyone else's, one reason why we are so proud to have published her."--"Notre Dame Reviews"

"Gautier is good at what she does. . . .Her true achievement is her capacity to tell stories of urgency, sensitivity and grace. Her characters are bearers of psychological complexity. . . .all familiar stories in their basic broad strokes, it is her fine sense of detail, her intimate knowledge of the quirks and foibles of her character, and her capacity to write lines with seemingly effortless grace, that make this such a pleasurable and enlightening read."--Kwame Dawes, "Prairie Schooner"

"These stories have courage, a brutal honesty, and a layered insight that is hard to find. They will stay with you long after the stories are over."-- Richard Thomas, "The Nervous Breakdown"

"Ultimately, these aren't stories that surprise us at the end, but rather ones that surprise us with how those ends are reached. . . . A thought-provoking read, "At-Risk" offers no easy solutions to the problems of inner city poverty and racial discrimination. In the end, we may not be able to love these children and teenagers enough to change their circumstances, but Gautier ensures that we will, in fact, love them."--Sian Griffiths, "The Iowa Review"

"Part of what makes "At-Risk" immensely appealing is the sense that Gautier has captured facets of youth which transcend borders. . . . Despite its title, this is not a debut composed of rapid shocks and dangers, but a quieter accumulation of heartbreaking pressures. Another treasure in the University of Georgia Press' acclaimed series." --Karen Rigby, "ForeWord"

Great and engrossing read!
By greygoose12
What a lovely book! Each story is wonderfully different and totally unique. The writing is beautiful, simple and rhythmic all at the same time. I like the way Gautier frames the collection by beginning and ending with the same characters, but how all of the stories in the middle are different, as if all of the other characters can live between the two possibilities. Although the stories all are serious, plenty of them have small humorous touches. Each story ends in a way that leaves me wanting more. These stories are all unique and beautifully written. I think it's really hard to write from the point of view of a child without making the kids seem too adult or too sentimental and cheesy. This writer goes inside the heads of her characters and makes them all seem real. The stories focus on underprivileged or "at-risk" kids, but the book is not gloomy or depressing. It is real. After all, we are living in a world where people build their prisons based on the number of kids who can't read by third grade. Gautier is tackling serious issues that affect yesterday and today's youth. In addition to struggling to make a place for themselves, making friends, and finding ways to fit in, many kids really do have to deal with bullying, growing up in single families, dealing with the deaths of their friends, drug culture, teenage pregnancy, underage sex, and the pressures of growing up too fast. What I really appreciate about these stories is that they are all subtle and so well-written. Nothing is blatant and in your face. These stories don't overdo it and create stereotypical or pitiful characters. None of the kids come off as charity cases. It seems like the writer is saying that even though people are products of their environment, the kids also have to make their own choices and decisions. I hope she writes more books.

No monolith here
By A. Braxton
The first thing that struck me was how different this collection is. Most forms of fiction--television, movies, books, etc.--treat inner city Black and Latino people as if they are all the same. Be they rich, poor, athletic, musical, or anything else, everyone in most stories are the same. This is not the case in At Risk. I really appreciate that.

The other thing that gets me is how much I feel like I know these characters. It is as if these people are a part of my life. They feel so real, and their stories feel the same.

At Risk is a book of stories about real life. If you appreciate realism, you won't be disappointed.

Master of Expectations
By Listener in Portland
This is a really fine, varied collection. What I like best is how well Gautier manages expectations--our own, and the characters. Which is to say that these stories don't read like after-school specials, they read like lived lives. Expectations are rarely achieved, here, but the way narratives fork and tangle feels so real.

Southern CookingFrom University of Georgia Press

No southern food enthusiast should be without this gathering of 1,300 flavorful recipes for such classic dishes as fried chicken, cornbread, pickled watermelon rinds, and sweet potato pie.

Southern Cooking had its origins in Henrietta Dull's immensely popular cooking column in the Atlanta Journal, whose readers faithfully clipped its recipes. The demand for reprints of perennial favorites or early, hard-to-find dishes prompted Mrs. Dull to compile them into her now-famous book. Not only does it include individual recipes, but it also suggests menus for various occasions and holidays. Her famous Georgia Christmas Dinner, for instance, consists of grapefruit, roast turkey, dry stuffing, dry rice, turkey gravy, candied sweet potatoes, buttered green peas, cranberry jelly, celery hearts, hot biscuits, sweet butter, syllabub, and cake.

Mrs. Dull was one of the most sought-after caterers in Atlanta even before she began her newspaper column. Her vast, practical knowledge of food and its preparation, and her embrace of new, but never gimmicky, innovations in cooking served her readers well. Upon Mrs. Dull's death in 1964 at the age of 100, the Atlanta Journal said that her book was "the standard by which regional cooks have been measured since 1928." Southern Cooking is the starting place for anyone in search of authentic dishes done in the traditional style.

Review

Henrietta Stanley Dull's Southern Cooking, with recipes for cabbage gumbo and beef brain croquettes, tomato fez and log cabin salad, reveals a region on the brink of modernity. A new foreword by Damon Lee Fowler rewards curious cooks and students of Southern culture alike with glimpses into the interior life of a woman who was born before Appomattox and witnessed the dawn of the Civil Rights Movement.

(John T Edge author of Fried Chicken: An American Story)

Many Southerners will fondly remember Henrietta Dull's Southern Cooking as the other sacred book in their childhood homes. I’ve long thought it is one of the most important Southern cookbooks of the twentieth century. This new edition of Mrs. Dull's classic work should inspire a new generation of Southern cooks.

(Nathalie Dupree author of New Southern Cooking)

We should be grateful to the University Press of Georgia for making this classic of Southern cooking once again easily available.

(Gravy)

Her name has become synonymous with Southern Cooking. . . . On occasion, I am pleasantly surprised to open a package at work and find a new book directed to my attention. When it's a book that spans such a history, includes an index of mouth-watering recipes that have withstood the test of time and also recounts a little of the life of a woman who found herself as the family breadwinner, as well as the family breadmaker . . . well, that's an even better surprise. That's the case with Mrs. Dull's Southern Cooking.

(Banks County News)

Wonderful slice of Americana
By David Foe
I first ran across a copy of this cookbook 25 years ago in a used book store. This new, reprint edition is even nicer than the original, with a great new cover, high-quality binding and paper, etc. First rate.

But the main appeal to "Southern Cooking" are the timeless recipes by the famous Mrs. Dull. It is truly a slice of Americana. I've tried many of these recipes, and though they are old-fashioned, they still taste great. I can especially recommend "Mother Dull's Tea Cakes," the gingerbread recipe, and many of the cakes.

The writing style is a little loose and it helps to have some knowledge of cooking, but as the notes explain, if you read the section introductions Mrs. Dull gives good instructions. In fact, I think her instructions are cake baking are about the most helpful I have ever had.

Her personality shines through on every page.

This is a classic book at a great price, and it's great to have the 1941 edition back in print. They did a great job. You'll want to buy several copies to give as gifts.

Southern Cooking by Mrs. S.R. Dull
By gabulldog66
This is the second copy of this book I have owned. My mother passed down her copy (2nd printing in 1941) to me. I used it for a few years and it is getting pretty worn. I was pleased to see another printing available from Amazon. This is more than a cookbook. To give you an idea, it's "Dedicated to My Friends, the Women of Atlanta, of Georgia and the South. It is a return to the deep South of the 1920's, with a good understanding of what it took to run a home back then. No appliances to speak of, but plenty of how to set up a kitchen, rules for table setting and serving, "Good Kitchen Stunts" (which are tips), and of course household hints. Don't buy it just for the recipes. It is a really good read as well.
