Reading Essays: An Invitation, by G. Atkins

Approaches abound to help us beneficially, enjoyably read fiction, poetry, and drama. Here, for the first time, is a book that aims to do the same for the essay. G. Douglas Atkins performs sustained readings of more than twenty-five major essays, explaining how we can appreciate and understand what this currently resurgent literary form reveals about the “art of living.”

Atkins’s readings cover a wide spectrum of writers in the English language―and his readings are themselves essays, gracefully written, engaged, and engaging. Atkins starts with the earliest British practitioners of the form, including Francis Bacon, John Dryden, Alexander Pope, and Samuel Johnson. Transcendentalist writers Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson are included, as are works by Americans James Baldwin, Zora Neale Hurston, and E. B. White. Atkins also provides readings of a number of contemporary essayists, among them Annie Dillard, Scott Russell Sanders, and Cynthia Ozick.

Many of the readings are of essays that Atkins has used successfully in the classroom, with undergraduate and graduate students, for many years. In his introduction Atkins offers practical advice on the specific demands essays make and the unique opportunities they offer, especially for college courses. The book ends with a note on the writing of essays, furthering the author’s contention that reading should not be separated from writing.

Reading Essays continues in the tradition of such definitive texts as Understanding Poetry and Understanding Fiction. Throughout, Atkins reveals the joy, delight, grace, freedom, and wisdom of “the glorious essay.”

Review

Reading Essays is an important undertaking, a welcome and vital addition to the current literature on the essay, rightly opening that body of scholarship to non-specialists. There is no book like this one, composed of a resonantly ordered series of perceptive critical readings that, at their best, enact the elastic form they entertain. The result is both learned and fresh, carrying forward the project of a 'revitalized critical writing' advocated in the author's excellent earlier book, Estranging the Familiar.

(Lydia Fakundiny editor of The Art of the Essay)

In three decades of writing and pondering essays, I have been seeking a book that grasps the four-hundred-year history of this adventurous form, and that does so with the wit, suppleness, curiosity, and emotional and intellectual range one expects of the finest essays. And now here at last is such a book. Atkins reads individual works with a sympathetic yet rigorous imagination, all the while elucidating a mode of writing that is also a mode of thinking, feeling, and living. I am eager to put this book into the hands of students, and into the hands of anyone who wonders why, in our time, the essay is generating so much heat and light.

(Scott Russell Sanders author of A Private History of Awe)

Reading Essays: An Invitation is one that you ought to affirm and go to. . . . It can sharpen your thinking and possibly even improve your writing and expressing your thoughts.

(Paiso Jamakar Biz India)

Down to the Waterline: Boundaries, Nature, and the Law in Florida, by Sara Warner

In most states the boundary separating public waters from private uplands―the ordinary high water line (OHWL)―is a flashpoint between proponents of either property rights or public-trust protection of our water. Using Florida as a case study, Down to the Waterline is the first book-length analysis of the OHWL doctrine and its legal, technical, and cultural underpinnings. Sara Warner not only covers the historical function of the OHWL but tells how advances in science and our environmental attitudes have led us to a more complex encounter with this ancient boundary.

Florida sees a steady influx of new residents who crowd along its extensive coasts and interior shorelines―yet who also demand pristine water resources. The OHWL establishes public access and private ownership limits on some of the state’s most valuable land: in economic terms, waterfront real estate; in ecological terms, marshes and wetlands. Sara Warner brings to life many of the courtroom battles fought over the OHWL through the perspectives of ranchers, outdoors enthusiasts, developers, surveyors, scientists, and policymakers.

While explaining the OHWL’s legal and political intricacies, Warner never loses sight of the wonder of herons wading a marsh or a largemouth bass breaking a smooth lake surface. To her the OHWL is not just an ideological battleground; it is a marker of how we see the natural world. What do we think we’re doing when we channel a river or fill a swamp? she asks―for it matters greatly where we focus our attention before invoking the awesome capabilities of technology.

Review

Down to the Waterline contains a tapestry of several beautiful interwoven themes: that nature must be reckoned with when determining waterfront property lines; that we seldom if ever fully anticipate the repercussions of our technological achievements; that societal progress means more than bettering the human community―we now realize the whole biocommunity must be bettered; that often the natural world is far more beneficial to human society when left in its natural state. Applying these themes to the history of Florida's public/private property battles creates a fascinating tale.

(David C. Slade, Esq. editor of Putting the Public Trust Doctrine to Work)

Warner’s book should be of interest and useful to anyone who cares about the freedom to enjoy the outdoors on inland water bodies in Florida.

The Best in Its Field
By The Tall Tinker
Dr. Warner's love of the environment shows clearly on every page of this well-researched volume, which has been used in court cases to determine the Ordinary High Water Line on disputed property. Part philosophy, part history, and part law, this book is the definitive study of navigable water bodies in Florida.

Book describes cases involving the determination of the ordinary high water mark methodology used in the State of Florida. Interesting but not an easy read.

Romancing the Vote: Feminist Activism in American Fiction, 1870-1920, by Leslie Petty

As the nineteenth century progressed into the twentieth, novels about politically active women became increasingly common. Until now, however, no one has studied this body of writing as a distinct tradition in American literature. In Romancing the Vote, Leslie Petty recovers this tradition and also examines how the fiction written about the women's rights and related movements contributed to the creation and continued vitality of those movements.

Petty examines the novels as paradigms of feminist activism and reform communities and elucidates how they, whether wittingly or not, model ways to create similar communities in the real world. She demonstrates how the narratives provide insight into the hopes and anxieties surrounding some of the most important political movements in American history and how they encapsulate the movements' paradoxical blend of progressive and conservative ideologies.

The major works discussed are Elizabeth Boynton Harbert's Out of Her Sphere (1871), Lillie Devereux Blake's Fettered for Life (1874), Henry James's The Bostonians (1886), Frances Ellen Watkins Harper's Iola Leroy (1892), Hamlin Garland's A Spoil of Office (1892), Marjorie Shuler's For Rent―One Pedestal (1917), Elizabeth Jordan's edited volume The Sturdy Oak (1917), and Oreola Williams Haskell's Banner Bearers: Tales of the Suffrage Campaigns (1920).

Although these works discredit many traditional notions about gender and inspire their readers to seek fairness and equality for many American women, they often simultaneously perpetuate discriminatory ideas about other marginalized groups. They not only privilege the experiences of white women but also rely on widespread anxieties about racial and ethnic minorities to demonstrate the need for gender reform. By focusing on such tensions between conventional and unconventional ideas about gender, race, and class, Petty shows how the fiction of this period helps to situate first-wave feminism within a larger historical and cultural context.

Review

Drawing on historical and cultural sources as well as the fictional work of several writers, Petty has written a study that successfully debunks the 'separate spheres' of male and female experience and provides important commentary about overlooked fiction. Romancing the Vote is an illuminating new study of the activist heroine in late nineteenth-century/early twentieth-century American literature.

(Susan Belasco coeditor of Periodical Literature in Nineteenth-Century America)

Leslie Petty's Romancing the Vote artfully traces the development of American women's activist feminist fiction from the subtle subversion of the sentimental romance to the middlebrow modernism of New Woman fiction. This book adds an important literary dimension to our understanding of American women's political and reform history.

(Ellen Carol DuBois coauthor of Through Women's Eyes: An American History with Documents)

[W]ill find its home not only in the college-level collections of libraries strong in literature, but in those which cater to students of women's history and civil rights studies.

Review
-Armine Kotin Mortimer not only provides an indispensable guide to the study of Roland Barthes's writing and the way it plays with and against other texts; 'The Gentlest Law' is also a fascinating exploration of intertextuality in its own right.- (Jonathan Culler, Director, Society for the Humanities, Cornell University) -This book is a Michelin guide to that Babel. ... It is an Ariadne's thread through the tapestry of Barthes's work. And just as readers would no longer choose to read 'Sarrasine' without S/Z, so too we would never again wish to venture into Barthes without 'The Gentlest Law'.- (Carol Rigolot, French Review)

Hell's Broke Loose in Georgia: Survival in a Civil War Regiment, by Scott Walker

Darling, I never wanted to gow home as bad in my life as I doo now and if they don’t give mee a furlow I am going any how. Written in December 1862 by Private Wright Vinson in Tennessee to his wife, Christiana, in Georgia, these lines go to the heart of why Scott Walker wrote this history of the Fifty-seventh Georgia Infantry, a unit of the famed Mercer’s Brigade.

All but a few members of the Fifty-seventh lived within a close radius of eighty miles from each other. More than just an account of their military engagements, this is a collective biography of a close-knit group. Relatives and neighbors served and died side by side in the Fifty-seventh, and Walker excels at showing how family ties, friendships, and other intimate dynamics played out in wartime settings. Humane but not sentimental, the history abounds in episodes of real feeling: a starving soldier’s theft of a pie; another’s open confession, in a letter to his wife, that he may desert; a slave’s travails as a camp orderly.

Drawing on memoirs and a trove of unpublished letters and diaries, Walker follows the soldiers of the Fifty-seventh as they push far into Unionist Kentucky, starve at the siege of Vicksburg, guard Union prisoners at the Andersonville stockade, defend Atlanta from Sherman, and more. Hardened fighters who would wish hell on an incompetent superior but break down at the sight of a dying Yankee, these are real people, as rarely seen in other Civil War histories.

Review

The letters, diaries, and other information Scott Walker located and utilized on the soldiers and families of the 57th Georgia infantry are among the finest I've ever encountered. He has done complete justice to these superb primary sources by writing a narrative that is richly descriptive yet focused and restrained. Walker allows the soldiers and their families to speak for themselves while placing their words and deeds in a clear and meaningful context.

(T. Michael Parrish author of Richard Taylor and editor of Brothers In Gray)

Civil War regimental histories are thick on the ground now, but Hell's Broke Loose in Georgia is a different sort of creature, a penetrating look at the inner world and lives of men who marched, ate, slept, fought, and died together. Not so much a unit history as a 'family' portrait of men bound by the war, Scott Walker's book offers a glimpse of the personality and inner world of almost all Civil War units, North and South alike. This is the part of regimental history that too many regimental historians overlook.

(William C. Davis author of Look Away! and Jefferson Davis)

Amidst the fog enveloping the vast array of literature on the American Civil War, much of it mundane and redundant, emerges a real jewel of a book. For in Hell's Broke Loose in Georgia, author Scott Walker breaks free from the usual litany of battles, campaigns, and troop movements and serves up an engaging, tightly woven, account of what the participants felt during the campaigns, rather than how they fought.

(Georgia Historical Quarterly)

A beautifully written narrative . . . Hell's Broke Loose in Georgia stands as a heartfelt recounting of one regiment's triumphs and traumas.

(Journal of American History)

Walker’s book is both a labor of love and an excellent insight into the true nature of military life during the Civil War.

(North & South)

Diligent use of manuscript letters makes this [book] a sturdy soldiers’ chronicle ably set in Western Theater history.

(Blue and Gray)

Walker uses this disastrous defeat to criticize the Confederate high command, something he does with stylish effectiveness throughout the book as Southern forces in the West stagger from one debacle to another . . . But Hell’s Broke Loose in Georgia isn't unique because it points out the shortcomings of Hood, Braxton Bragg and Jefferson Davis. It's Walker's passion for his subject, combined with the remarkable correspondence from Confederates to their families, that gives this unit portrait such bold color.

(Savannah Morning News)

This book is not about glorious victory or honorable defeat; it is about the struggle of men to hold on to their humanity in war’s fiery furnace of inhumanity. This is a book about hell―hell with a few humorous anecdotes, hell with unexpected acts of kindness, but hell.

(Southern Distinction)

Georgia's Offense and Defense, Circa 1861-1865!
By Trial by Combat!
I was first fasinated with this book because of names. There are Braswell's and Samuel's in my Deen Family. My mother was a Smith. Scott Walkers book lists Master Sergeant William (Billy) Braswell, Private Samuel Braswell, and Private Robert Braswell as three central leaders. Then I note General Kirby Smith and Brigadier General James Argyle Smith were in important command post positions.

This book follows the Route of The 57th Georgia Regiment which was mostly formed and organized from counties in Central Georgia. The reader is intrigued with moving into the Kentucky Campaign and on to Vicksburg, Savannah, Andersonville, Atlanta, Tennessee and finally The North Carolina Battle and lastly the survivor's returning to their homes.

Walker has provided a treasury trove of Georgia History. I will try to reread this book often. Braswell, Samuel and Smith connections were to me a plus. My great grandfather Samuel Lee Deen and another great uncle Samson Altman were killed on St. John's Island, South Carolina, during these days.

57th GA.Regt.
By Redcatcher 1968-69
I ran across this book while doing research on my ancestors who fought in the 30th GA. Since both units were in The Army of Tennessee and fought many of the same battles in close proximity to each other, and the fact that men in this unit were from rural Georgia as were my ancestors I was looking for insight into the daily lives of the soldiers. I was not disapointed as the book contains many personal letters and diary entries from the common soldier, as regarding their living conditions and daily suffering. Fasinating insight into the period. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in real people of the time.

Confluences: Postcolonialism, African American Literary Studies, and the Black Atlantic, by John Gruesser

Confluences looks at the prospects for and the potential rewards of breaking down theoretical and disciplinary barriers that have tended to separate African American and postcolonial studies. John Cullen Gruesser’s study emphasizes the confluences among three major theories that have emerged in literary and cultural studies in the past twenty-five years: postcolonialism, Henry Louis Gates Jr.’s Signifyin(g), and Paul Gilroy’s black Atlantic.

For readers who may not be well acquainted with one or more of the three theories, Gruesser provides concise introductions in the opening chapter. In addition, he urges those people working in postcolonial or African American literary studies to attempt to break down the boundaries that in recent years have come to isolate the two fields. Gruesser then devotes a chapter to each theory, examining one literary text that illustrates the value of the theoretical model, a second text that extends the model in a significant way, and a third text that raises one or more questions about the theory. His examples are drawn from the writings of Salman Rushdie, Jean Rhys, V. S. Naipaul, Walter Mosley, Pauline Hopkins, Toni Morrison, Harry Dean, Harriet Jacobs, and Alice Walker.

Cautious not to conflate postcolonial and African American studies, Gruesser encourages critics to embrace the black Atlantic’s emphases on movement through space (routes rather than roots) and intercultural connections and to expand and where appropriate to emend Gilroy’s efforts to bridge the two fields.

Review

Confluences is concise and cogent. Because he so ably demonstrates his critique and suggestions through deliberate readings of texts that cause us to question some of the more popular of contemporary critical suppositions, his book will be of tremendous interest to a wide range of readers and scholars.

(Aldon L. Nielsen Pennsylvania State University)

Confluences joins Paul Gilroy's The Black Atlantic in the first rank of books investigating African American literature's place in the postcolonial tradition. Placing postcolonialism in dialogue with the major texts of African American literary theory, Gruesser provides a deft introduction to the major currents of postcolonial theory and makes a compelling case for postcolonialism as an appropriate touchstone for black criticism in the new century.

(Craig Werner author of A Change Is Gonna Come: Music, Race, and the Soul of America)

A very welcome addition to postcolonial debates, Confluences offers a commanding reinterpretation of the often vexed relationship between texts and theories, writers and theorists, while at the same time breaking through the artificial boundaries between African, black Atlantic, and African American literature.

(Eric J. Sundquist UCLA Foundation Professor of Literature)

Offers an important revision of the notion of linkages between African American studies and postcolonial studies

(Choice)

Globalizes African American studies by bringing that field into dialogue with postcolonial theory and literature

(Journal of Modern Literature)

Argues persuasively for a critical deterritorialization of the three fields of literary criticism that form the book's subtitle: Postcolonialism, African American Literary Studies, and the Black Atlantic . . . In seeking to redress the divisions between the fields of postcolonial studies, African American studies, and diasporic studies, Confluences makes an invaluable appeal for future scholarship that will reckon with both disciplinary and cultural hybridity.

(Modern Fiction Studies)

Confluences profoundly historicizes our own contemporary, theoretical, and cultural moment of blackness as it maps the routes of previous discussions of black and colonial subjectivity that traveled the discrete paths represented by those distinct bodies of scholarship. . . . Reveal[s] the impact of cultural studies as a synthesizing force, traveling across multiple geographies of color in the late twentieth century and into multiple fields of intellectual production in this century.

Development, Security, and Aid: Geopolitics and Geoeconomics at the U.S. Agency for International Development (Geographies of Justice and S

In Development, Security, and Aid Jamey Essex offers a sophisticated study of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), examining the separate but intertwined discourses of geopolitics and geoeconomics.

Geopolitics concentrates on territory, borders, and strategic political and military positioning within the international state system. Geoeconomics emphasizes economic power, growth, and connectedness within a global, and supposedly borderless, system. Both discourses have strongly influenced the strategies of USAID and the views of American policy makers, bureaucrats, and business leaders toward international development. Providing a unique geographical analysis of American development policy, Essex details USAID's establishment in 1961 and traces the agency's growth from the Cold War into an era of neoliberal globalization up to and beyond 9/11, the global war on terror, and the looming age of austerity.

USAID promotes improvement for millions by providing emergency assistance and support for long-term economic and social development. Yet the agency's humanitarian efforts are strongly influenced, and often trumped, by its mandate to advance American foreign policies. As a site of, a strategy for, and an agent in the making of geopolitics and geoeconomics, USAID, Essex argues, has often struggled to reconcile its many institutional mandates and objectives. The agency has always occupied a precarious political position, one that is increasingly marked by the strong influence of military, corporate, and foreign-policy institutions in American development strategy.

Review

Using the insights developed in recent work in critical geopolitics, this volume carefully reassesses the policy discourses and practical policies of USAID, showing how the larger canvass of geopolitics worked its way into American development funding and management. From the Marshall Plan through neoliberalism to contemporary concerns with fragile states, this very well-written volume traces the shifting geopolitical priorities of aid policy in its attempts to shape the world in line with American priorities.

(Simon Dalby author of Security and Environmental Change)

An incisive and fresh treatment of the politics of U .S. development assistance. Essex's bold and original analysis shows how USAID is caught up in broader questions of geopolitics and geoeconomics. Inspired by a critical geographical imagination, this marvelous book will be compelling reading for anyone who cares about development, international political economy, and U.S. foreign policy.

Insightful study of USAID
By P. S. Bose
Outstanding book, gives a fantastic insight both historically and in the present day into the development of USAID, some of the internal wrangling with other branches of the US government and the transformations it has undertaken in recent years. Well-written and with some compelling arguments about the overlaps and contradictions of geopolitical and geoeconomic imperatives that drive USAID.

Literary Capital: A Washington ReaderFrom Brand: University of Georgia Press

Washington, D.C., has long been a magnet for writers and an object of interest and fascination to essayists, novelists, and poets. Literary Capital offers a compelling portrait of the city through the work of seventy authors ranging from early Americans such as Abigail Adams and Washington Irving to contemporaries such as Edward P. Jones and Joan Didion.

Arranged by both period and theme, this anthology begins with the founding of Washington in 1800 and extends through the early twenty-first century. In the introduction Christopher Sten explores two broad categories of prose―historical writing focused on politics and writing about the lives and times of the people of D.C. with official Washington as the setting. Sten also defines a core group of “Washington writers,” native and naturalized authors who focus much of their work on the city: Frederick Douglass, Henry Adams, Jean Toomer, John Dos Passos, Gore Vidal, Ward Just, and Susan Richards Shreve, among others.

Included are letters, essays, short stories, poems, and excerpts from novels and historical writings by a broad selection of such renowned American and international authors as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Charles Dickens, Alexis de Tocqueville, Louisa May Alcott, Walt Whitman, Mark Twain, Sinclair Lewis, Norman Mailer, Mary McCarthy, and Joseph Heller. The reader also incorporates many writings by well-known African American authors, including Booker T. Washington, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Jean Toomer, Sterling A. Brown, Langston Hughes, May Miller, Ralph Ellison, and Marita Golden.

Review

Literary Capital is great in concept and even better in execution. Christopher Sten has skillfully selected an assortment of the classic and the contemporary, the literary and the reportorial, the appreciative and the denunciatory, in writings about life and habits in Washington. In a fair world, this collection might slightly raise the esteem of Washington in the public’s eyes. In the real world, it makes for wonderful reading.

(James Fallows National Correspondent for The Atlantic)

It would be hard to find another book that so magnificently pays tribute to the two centuries of Washington cultural life than Literary Capital.

(Washington Independent Review of Books)

All the readers of Literary Capital will be indebted to Christopher Sten for the fine and moving collection of ‘Washington writing’ he has gathered here. It is full of familiar and surprising entries that offer a good mix of national and local subjects and points of view―foreign, native, power holding, power seeking, and the disempowered. Literary Capital captures the ‘story’ that makes Washington so interesting as a place.

(Sarah Luria author of Capital Speculations: Writing and Building Washington, D.C.)

As tempting as it might be to question Washington’s significance as a literary capital, Christopher Sten demonstrates not just the presence over time of a rich and varied set of representations. In many instances, such work discloses much about our national character that can be as troubling as it is revealing. Sten’s selections will surprise readers in the breadth of the views represented and the challenges they pose to values we hold dear as a nation.

(Howard Gillette author of Between Justice and Beauty: Race, Planning, and the Failure of Urban Policy in Washington, D.C.)

Literary Capital is an indispensable guide to the literature, culture, and history of Washington, D.C. Here, finally, is a book that captures the nation’s capital in all its glory and tawdriness, revealing why it has long been a ‘magnet for writers,’ as Christopher Sten writes in his superb introduction. With its brilliant selection of writings, it is one of the very best books on the literature of a city.

(John Stauffer Chair of the History of American Civilization and Professor of English at Harvard University)

Literary Capital is a collection of narratives by residents of and visitors to Washington, DC. In other words, a real grab bag. Reach in and pull out goodies from Dickens, Emerson, and Melville, or put them back and retrieve more recent writings by Gore Vidal, Joan Didion, or Allen Drury. . . . This reader is bound to appeal to history buffs as well as anyone with ties to the city or visitors who might want a souvenir of its literary output. (Trina Carter Foreword Reviews)

One character [in Literary Capital] that’s all over the place, though, is the city itself. One day, it’s a southern backwater. Another, it’s a den of crooked cynics. It’s a city of great hope and a place of betrayal―sometimes all at once. Who knows: A future edition of the anthology could feature characters grappling with a condo bubble or paranoid literary fantasies about a Tea Party takeover. 'It’s fabricated anew by each author,' Sten says. (Michael Schaffer Washington CityPaper)

If you like DC history, this is a great read and certainly worth the time. Since it is an edited collection of writings of famous authors who have lived or spent extended periods of time in DC, some of the submissions are more interesting than others. But...overall it adds to the DCana literature. When I was first starting my government career in 1971, a more tenured co-worker from NY told me that Washington was a "sleepy Southern" town. Being from Mississippi, I was very much puzzled by her comment. After living and working around Washington for 36 years and reading a fair amount about it's history, I came to appreciate her observation, although it long ago ceased to be a "Southern" town. It remains my favorite city and I always recommend it to foreigners and Americans alike.

Human Intelligence and National Power: A Political Essay in Sociobiology (Itzkoff, Seymour W//Evolution of Human Intelligence), by Seymour

Human Intelligence and National Power: A political essay in sociobiology discusses the relationship between variable intelligence in ethnic and national cultures and their political impact on the international scene. The books's argument is developed from the theory presented in Dr. Itzkoff's four-volume «Evolution of Human Intelligence», also published by Peter Lang. Each national society to the extent that it reflects a fairly homogeneous ethnicity, also exhibits a unique intellectual profile. Its national intellectual capital is capable through the most advanced forms of education of rising to the capacity for abstract thought and action in meeting the technological requirements of modernity. National corporate intelligence will thus impact on the international community through its economic, military, and political power. The author applies his sociobiological model to the circumstances affecting formerly communist societies, Japan, the United States, the Third World, as well as the broader international scene.

Review
-This is an interesting and important book which attempts very successfully to apply the lessons of modern research into intelligence to the social and political problems facing humanity all over the world. The author is at home in anthropology as well as in psychology, and sets his net widely, tracing historical developments over millions of years and interlacing the resulting racial differences with modern research outcomes. ... Public and informed discussion on such issues has been almost completely exorcized in recent years; this book marks a welcome return to reality.- (H.J. Eysenck, Person. individ. Diff.)
