By Tonstant Weader
Civil Rights and Beyond is a compilation of scholarly articles exploring the history and varying conditions of conflict and cooperation among Latino and African American groups. Sometimes people, even civil rights activists, make the facile assumption that all people on the downside of political, economic and socio-cultural power share similar challenges and common political goals. Other times, those in power exploit and heighten differences between ethnic groups to prevent collaboration and coordination of organizing efforts to influence decision-makers. This book is definitely an antidote to the former and perhaps a guide to avoiding the latter.

As many civil rights organizers often urge collaboration to build power, it is important to understand the challenges in forming effective coalitions. Activists often use the term people of color to aggregate Latinos, Native Americans, African Americans and Asian Pacific Islanders. While it may work as an antonym for white people and useful when talking about issues that people of color may work on collaborative, such as t he Voting Rights Act. On the other hand, the rest of the time, this erases the different experiences of the many different ethnic communities who have experienced oppression in far different ways.

Civil Rights and Beyond focuses only on Latino and African American conflict and collaboration. Looking to the past for understanding the present, researchers examined the relationships one of LA’s Latino commissioners had with the African American community, the effectiveness of multi-racial organizing for public housing and public accommodations in Bakersfield.

The research on black-Cuban conflicts in Miami if fascinating, because so many of the Cuban exiles presumed whiteness and assumed white privilege and white attitudes toward African Americans. This was abetted by the federal, state and local government, all with the fighting communism. Whiteness became not just physical appearance, but social and culture attitudes against Communism and Cuba. While the NAACP was working to desegregate schools (it was after Brown v. Board of Education), school districts eagerly accepted Cuban students while resisting admission of black students. Black Miamians were fired and replaced by Cuban employees. One activist joked that for black people in Miami to get ahead, they would do better to flee to Cuba and return as refugees.

Mark Malisa has a fascinating section on internationalizing the civil rights struggle and the cooperative efforts of African Americans, AfroCubans and Africans to coordinate together to not only point out America’s failure to deal effectively with racism and the continuing oppression of African Americans in the US, but its complicity in oppression abroad, including past support for apartheid and support for racist regimes.

Other chapters look at the Black Panthers working with the Young Lords in Chicago and the Black Power movement collaborating with the independence movement in Puerto Rico. Still others look at the Rainbow Coalition and the Nuevo South.

Civil Rights and Beyond is a good resource for organizers, the leaders and activists of movement organizing against racism. It is scholarly and many of the articles have a narrow scope. Looking at organizing in the microcosm, though, of one community, can provide useful lessons for fellow organizers. It might be even more effective with the perspective of API organizers and Native American organizers as well. Their absence from the narrative of multi-ethnic civil rights organizing reminded me of CNN’s recent declaration that Bernie Sanders won the mostly white state of Hawaii. I am sure that was not the intention, but it seems a failing in perspective.

I would have like to have read something about communities of color collaborating around the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which some are using as an framework for civll and human rights organizing, but there was not mention of it. However, despite what is missing from Civil Rights and Beyond, what is present will still provide valuable history, insight and strategic frameworks for future collaboration.

Greenbackers, Knights of Labor, and Populists: Farmer-Labor Insurgency in the Late-Nineteenth-Century South, by Matthew Hild

Historians have widely studied the late-nineteenth-century southern agrarian revolts led by such groups as the Farmers' Alliance and the People's (or Populist) Party. Much work has also been done on southern labor insurgencies of the same period, as kindled by the Knights of Labor and others. However, says Matthew Hild, historians have given only minimal consideration to the convergence of these movements.

Hild shows that the Populist (or People's) Party, the most important third party of the 1890s, established itself most solidly in Texas, Alabama, and, under the guise of the earlier Union Labor Party, Arkansas, where farmer-labor political coalitions from the 1870s to mid-1880s had laid the groundwork for populism's expansion. Third-party movements fared progressively worse in Georgia and North Carolina, where little such coalition building had occurred, and in places like Tennessee and South Carolina, where almost no history of farmer-labor solidarity existed.

Hild warns against drawing any direct correlations between a strong Populist presence in a given place and a background of farmer-laborer insurgency. Yet such a background could only help Populists and was a necessary precondition for the initially farmer-oriented Populist Party to attract significant labor support. Other studies have found a lack of labor support to be a major reason for the failure of Populism, but Hild demonstrates that the Populists failed despite significant labor support in many parts of the South. Even strong farmer-labor coalitions could not carry the Populists to power in a region in which racism and violent and fraudulent elections were, tragically, central features of politics.

Review

This is the first book-length treatment of a strangely neglected topic: the southern farmer-labor insurgency of the second half of the nineteenth century. Hild disagrees with those historians who suggest that southern farmers and laborers possessed little in common; instead, he argues that the denizens of the farm and factory sometimes worked in considerable harmony. He also provides a convincing explanation for why, in certain parts of the South, such cooperation was possible and why it failed elsewhere in the region. All students of southern farmers and laborers will welcome this fresh look at an important subject.

(Barton C. Shaw Cedar Crest College)

With his attention sharply focused on farmer-labor political cooperation at local, state, and national levels―from Greenbackers through the Populists and Progressives―Hild's book is a prodigious feat of scholarship. He is a shrewd guide through a complex story, as well as a perceptive analyst of the impediments of class and race and of the fraud and violence that bedeviled the popular insurgencies.

(Sheldon Hackney University of Pennsylvania)

Excellent . . . There is much to praise in this book. . . . This is groundbreaking work that will cause historians to reevaluate the nature of southern Populism, labor organizing in the South, and the importance of historical contingency and location. It should also open up areas for further research. This book is essential reading for all scholars interested in third-party politics, labor history, Populism, and southern history.

(Journal of American History)

This valuable new addition to the study of the nineteenth-century South provides readers with a smoothly written, learned, and insightful account of the various movements throughout the region to win gains for farmers and laborers. . . . Hild excels at presenting the nuances of each set of local issues and activists while also remaining true to the larger questions of labor-farmer cooperation. . . . This volume is a must read for graduate students in the field and has much to offer advanced undergraduates . . . a valuable study of local southern politics between 1870 and 1900, one that deserves to be widely read and incorporated into scholars' accounts of the period.

(Georgia Historical Quarterly)

A well-researched book that deserves the widest possible readership.

(Journal of Southern History)

[A] perceptive and well-argued study . . . Hild has written the best region-wide study of Southern Populism to appear in the last twenty-five years.

(Arkansas Historical Quarterly)

Hild's research into the newspapers and manuscript sources of the insurgents lands him right in the mainstream of scholarship. . . . . Readers wanting to know the specifics of how well, how far, and how long a nascent coalition of interests endured in the late-nineteenth-century South could do no better than to plant their eyes here.

(Register of the Kentucky Historical Society)

Provides some important perspectives that make the book very worthwhile to students of labor history or the South. . . . Hild's book is an interesting and easily digestible look at the South through the perspective of the farmer-labor movement rather than from the perspective of race. This fresh view gives new understanding of the late-nineteenth-century South and shows its history as much more than a black-white struggle interwoven with North-South sectional conflict. Beyond its insight on the farmer-labor insurgency, Greenbackers, Knights of Labor, and Populists challenges historians to look at the South in different dimensions.

When the Red States really were Red
By Ernest Haberkern
This one of a number of accounts, most of which are mentioned and commented on in this book, of the popular movement of farmers, small businessmen and trade unionists in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This movement was strongest in the Western and Southern states. Professor Hild's account concentrates on the southern states (including Texas) where this movement recruited African Americans and women in significant numbers. In some cases locals, not just the movement if general, were integrated along racial and sexual lines. The question is: why did it eventually collapse?

After O'Connor: Stories from Contemporary GeorgiaFrom Brand: University of Georgia Press

Georgia has produced some of the major figures of modern literature, including Carson McCullers, Erskine Caldwell and, most notably, Flannery O'Connor. While such writers are firmly established in American literary history, all too few readers are aware of how the state's tradition of literary excellence persists in the present day.

The thirty stories in After O'Connor were written during the past fifteen years by authors who were born in Georgia or spent a significant part of their lives and careers in this state. Embracing the social, cultural, and ethnic variety in today's Georgia, After O'Connor both advances and helps redefine the great southern storytelling tradition.

Review

Flannery O'Connor is gone, but the legend of her work is burned on the hearts of writers everywhere. The pages in After O'Connor are powerful and do honor to the fierce vision that inspired them.

(Harry Crews)

[It] looks like the future of that great enterprise called 'Southern Literature' is assured―at least if the state of Georgia has anything to do with it.

(Diane Roberts Atlanta Journal-Constitution)

[A] groundbreaking new short story collection from The University of Georgia Press that both advances and helps redefine the great southern storytelling tradition.

(Georgia Public Radio)

If the short story is an American invention, I think that the final patent was registered in the South, and maybe in Georgia, where the University of Georgia Press has collected works by thirty authors who have ties to the Peach State. This is not just a ‘Georgia’ book, but a collection of diverse voices that makes an American book, a collection that students and teachers, writers and aspiring writers will want to read.

(Martin Lammon Fuller E. Callaway / Flannery O'Connor Chair and director of the Creative Writing Program, Georgia College & State University)

Although the authors in this anthology address most directly the manners―whether of Atlanta, Oulaba, or Gansu Province―the mystery still shimmers in the visible distance, and anyone tempted by fashionable notions that the author is dead, that chronological narrative is obsolete, or that meaning is arbitrary should sample the stories in this volume to be reminded that the real legacy of O'Connor is sheer excellence, and that it thrives.

(American Book Review)

From the Publisher
A luminous gathering of short fiction that showcases Georgia's thriving literary scene.

About the Author
Hugh Ruppersburg is Professor of English and Senior Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences at the University of Georgia. He is the author or editor of many books, including "After O'Connor" and "Georgia Voices," a three-volume anthology of Georgia's fiction, nonfiction, and poetry (Georgia).

Excellent anthology of current Southern writers
By voracious reader
As a graduate of a fiction writing program, I've read lots of anthologies. This one really stands out.

The authors range from those I recognized, such as Alice Walker and Ha Jin, to some whom I've never had the pleasure to read--until now.

As the subtitle indicates, the writers all have one thing in common. They have all lived in Georgia. Some, like Ha Jin, a Chinese expatriate, have styles and stories that are not tied to Southern culture. Other, like Janice Daughtarty, grew up in Georgia and their stories have an amazing southern tone.

Like any good anthology, many of the stories contained here resonate. There are many characters and places contained in these stores that I continue to think about many days after I've finished reading them.

If you're looking for a sampling of excellent short fiction, buy this book.

The Life and Adventures of Sir Launcelot Greaves (The Works of Tobias Smollett Ser.), by Tobias Smollett

This new edition brings to life Tobias Smollett's fourth novel, The Life and Adventures of Sir Launcelot Greaves. No annotated edition of the work existed before the second half of the twentieth century, and this comprehensive edition by Robert Folkenflik and Barbara Laning Fitzpatrick features more accurate text as well as scrupulous textual and critical information. Also included in the detailed introduction is a unique examination of Sir Launcelot Greaves, the first illustrated serial novel, in relation to the engravings by Anthony Walker.

Sir Launcelot Greaves was a groundbreaking novel for Smollett. Published in British Magazine beginning in January 1760, it was the first major work by an English novelist to have been written specifically for serial publication. The novel, Smollett's shortest, differs stylistically from his previous works. The most attractive of his heroes, Sir Launcelot is virtuous and strange, and he is surrounded by a Smollettian menagerie whose various jargons are part of this novel's linguistic virtuosity and satire. Sir Launcelot's character is an English naturalization of Quixote. Although Sir Launcelot, unlike Quixote, is not the object of the author's satire, an idealistic madness is central to both characters. In Smollett's work the theme of madness is integral to the relationship between self and society as the work ponders both the constitution of madness and the alternatives to revenge.

Sir Launcelot Greaves, though not Smollett's most heralded work, has not received the recognition it deserves. Folkenflik and Fitzpatrick present a definitive edition that will be appreciated by scholars and lovers of eighteenth-century literature.

Review

Folkenflik's intoduction does a skillful job of setting the novel in its formal, biographical and historical contexts, and his judicious notes are a mine of information on the issues and antagonisms that animate the text.

(Thomas Keymer Times Literary Supplement)

The republication of these marginal works in definitive editions, and the convincing reintegration of the translations into Smollet's corpus, will enable Smollett scholars to reassess their significance. And for that reason alone the texts are valuable. But the editions are also relevant to a broader number of current critical conversations not least because of their superb apparatus. . . .The importance of [this] edition to Smollett studies cannot be overstated.

(Sharon Alkner Eighteenth Century Scotland)

The Horrible Gift of Freedom: Atlantic Slavery and the Representation of Emancipation (Race in the Atlantic World, 1700-1900 Ser.), by Mar

In his tour de force Blind Memory, Marcus Wood read the visual archive of slavery in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century America and Britain with a closeness and rigor that until then had been applied only to the written texts of that epoch. Blind Memory changed the way we look at everything from a Turner seascape to a crude woodcut in a runaway slave advertisement. The Horrible Gift of Freedom brings the same degree of rigor to an analysis of the visual culture of Atlantic emancipation.

Wood takes a troubled and troubling look at the iconography inspired by the abolition of slavery across the Atlantic diaspora. Why, he asks, did imagery showing the very instant of the birth of black slave freedom invariably personify Liberty as a white woman? Where did the image of the enchained kneeling slave, ubiquitous in abolitionist visual culture on both sides of the Atlantic, come from? And, most important, why was freedom invariably depicted as a gift from white people to black people? In order to assess what the inheritance of emancipation imagery means now and to speculate about where it may travel in the future, Wood spends the latter parts of this book looking at the 2007 bicentenary of the 1807 Slave Trade Abolition Act. In this context a provocative range of material is analyzed including commemorative postage stamps, museum exhibits, street performances, religious ceremonies, political protests, and popular film.

By taking a new look at the role of the visual arts in promoting the “great emancipation swindle,” Wood brings into the open the manner in which the slave power and its inheritors have single-mindedly focused on celebratory cultural myths that function to diminish both white culpability and black outrage. This book demands that the living lies developed around the memory of the emancipation moment in Europe and America need to be not only reassessed but demolished.

Review
"Marcus Wood is the most distinctive voice in English talking about slavery. In The Horrible Gift of Freedom, he combines intellectual mastery of diverse (and interdisciplinary) works with a remarkable assertiveness of style. The result is a book you won't be able to ignore." --James Walvin, author of The Trader, The Owner, The Slave: Parallel Lives in the Age of Slavery

"With The Horrible Gift of Freedom, Marcus Wood deploys his characteristic rigor, creativity, and verve in the service of a near complete dismantling of abolitionist self-satisfaction. The cultural artifacts produced to celebrate abolition, both then and now, never have received more searching inquiry."
—Christopher L. Brown, author of Moral Capital: Foundations of British Abolitionism

"Marcus Wood, the preeminent scholar of the iconography of slavery, has written a brilliant successor to his pathbreaking book, Blind Memory. The Horrible Gift of Freedom is a necessary, vital book. Indeed, it should be required reading for anyone interested in the meanings and legacies of slavery and freedom. The prose is elegant, the analyses always penetrating and often provocative; and the result is that Wood has transformed common understandings of emancipation, highlighting the limits of freedom and offering a sober meditation on the legacy of freedom in the twenty-first century."
—John Stauffer, author of Giants: The Parallel Lives of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln

"Wood has meticulously deconstructed the devastating myth that freedom was a gift generously conferred to Africans. His book is a witty, gripping, sophisticated analysis of the racism and self-congratulation that centuries ago built narrative and pictorial falsehoods of staggering proportions; a deception, as he aptly demonstrates, still going on in the twenty-first century."
—Sylviane A. Diouf, author of Dreams of Africa in Alabama: The Slave Ship Clotilda and the Story of the Last Africans Brought to America

A decent read
By Brutus
This book exposes the thought process of the emancipationists of freedom as being a gift which they gave to former slaves. He then contends, with some success, that in viewing freedom as a gift rather than a right, the liberated were oppressed in other manners. It also contends that abolitionist propaganda, such as an iconic figure of a slave kneeling in chains, with the words, "Am I not a man and brother" led to a paternalistic attitude towards the newly freed.

One of the flaws of the book is that it at times, strip historical context from what is being discussed.

On Slavery's Border: Missouri's Small Slaveholding Households, 1815-1865 (Early American Places Ser.), by Diane Mutti Burke

On Slavery’s Border is a bottom-up examination of how slavery and slaveholding were influenced by both the geography and the scale of the slaveholding enterprise. Missouri’s strategic access to important waterways made it a key site at the periphery of the Atlantic world. By the time of statehood in 1821, people were moving there in large numbers, especially from the upper South, hoping to replicate the slave society they’d left behind.

Diane Mutti Burke focuses on the Missouri counties located along the Mississippi and Missouri rivers to investigate small-scale slavery at the level of the household and neighborhood. She examines such topics as small slaveholders’ child-rearing and fiscal strategies, the economics of slavery, relations between slaves and owners, the challenges faced by slave families, sociability among enslaved and free Missourians within rural neighborhoods, and the disintegration of slavery during the Civil War. Mutti Burke argues that economic and social factors gave Missouri slavery an especially intimate quality. Owners directly oversaw their slaves and lived in close proximity with them, sometimes in the same building. White Missourians believed this made for a milder version of bondage. Some slaves, who expressed fear of being sold further south, seemed to agree.

Mutti Burke reveals, however, that while small slaveholding created some advantages for slaves, it also made them more vulnerable to abuse and interference in their personal lives. In a region with easy access to the free states, the perception that slavery was threatened spawned white anxiety, which frequently led to violent reassertions of supremacy.

Review

Mutti Burke provides a deeply researched and thorough account of slaveholding practices in Missouri, the first general study of slavery in that border state since Harrison Trexler's 1914 account . . . She weighs conflicting evidence to tell an important and neglected story in impressive fashion.

(Choice)

On Slavery's Border is an excellent and needed examination of how slavery functioned in yet another time and place. Burke further adds to our understanding of the differences inherent within slavery and how slavery adapted to fulfill the needs of both the enslaved and the enslavers.

(Arkansas Historical Quarterly)

Highly original and beautifully crafted, On Slavery’s Border intervenes meaningfully and helpfully into some of the most important scholarly conversations about southern slavery. Mutti Burke tackles a region of the antebellum South rarely examined, and the dividends are rich. From her, we learn a great deal about the dynamics of slavery on small-slaveholding farms. This is a book that will be read with enormous profit by historians of the Old South specifically, of slavery generally.

(Mark M. Smith author of How Race is Made: Slavery, Segregation, and the Senses)

Her work is by far the most thorough treatment of slavery in Missouri to date, and the exceptional nuance and detail she brings to her analysis of the master-slave relationship will make it one of the most informative of a short list of works on slavery on small farms and in border states.

(H-CivWar )

On Slavery’s Border considerably advances our understanding of the slave South(s). Taking seriously long-standing calls for greater attention to slavery in non-plantation areas, Mutti Burke paints an intimate portrait of slaveholding in a state where slaveholders of small means predominated. Showing what this meant for how slaves, slaveholders, and nonslaveholders related to each other, socialized, built communities, and constituted family and kin networks, this book expands and fundamentally alters the historiographical landscape. Here slaves commonly endured hiring out and abroad marriages and slaveholders just as commonly saw their sons put behind the plow; here slavery was at once intimate and intensely violently. As historians turn increasingly to the global and transnational dimensions of American slavery, On Slavery’s Border reminds us of the continued importance of the local.

(Thavolia Glymph author of Out Of the House of Bondage: The Transformation of the Plantation Household)

On Slavery’s Border tackles two important and understudied subjects: the history of slavery in the South’s border states and the nature of small-scale slavery. It is full of original, interesting, and useful insight about many topics―from the forced and voluntary migrations that created Missouri’s patterns of slavery, to white gender ideologies that resembled those of the midwestern farming communities to the north and east, to the labor, leisure, and familial interactions that shaped the material and affective worlds of whites and African Americans. I am very enthusiastic about On Slavery’s Border and expect that its audience will include historians of slavery and of the South; historians specializing in African American history, family history, and the study of women, gender, and sexuality; and, of course, both scholarly and popular readers interested in Missouri history.

Missouri slave culture
By Gary J.
Dr. Mutti-Burke has produced an enlightening and interesting work. I learned that slavery was more personal in Missouri than in the South because most slave masters had 3-4 slaves on their farms. Missouri slave culture was much different from the deep South for this reason. Dr. Mutti-Burke is an academic but writes in an easy to read and entertaining style. I recommend this book for anyone interested in this dark chapter in our history. As a companion piece, Dr. Mutti-Burke is interviewed in the DVD titled Negroes To Hire, the story of slave life and culture on antebellum Missouri farms. Negroes To Hire

Slavery in the Show Me State
By Jim Schmidt
A slow start but a great middle makes this highly recommended reading - Although the author indicated in her introduction that the book was not intended as a general history of slavery in Missouri, as a relatively new resident to the state, I found the first chapter a good primer on the early history of MO, esp, as regards slavery - from the French "habitants" of the 1700s to the veritable flood of Upper South migrants in the early 1800s. The second chapter was an interesting look at daily life in mid-1800s Missouri white homes: child-rearing, marriage, education, sickness and death, but except for a few cases (treatment of the enslaved by children of their masters; interesting commentary on probate records of slaveholding families), she did not make a convincing argument that small-slaveholding families' experience was any different than a typical non-slaveholding family's, or for any typical Victorian-era American family. However, the book really hits its stride in later chapters, with a close and interesting examination of nearly every phase of slave/slaveholders life - birth, death, marriage, divorce, healthcare, leisure, schooling, religious practice, punishment, reward, murder, runaways, abolition, enlistment in the army, emancipation, and more. It made an excellent companion to Randolph Campbell's "An Empire for Slavery," which I've also read, as a state-focused (Missouri vs. Texas) "micro-history." The scholarship is thorough - excellent use of manuscript material and her use of United States Colored Troop (USCT) pension records is especially interesting. The maps and data tables are informative. The bibliography will make a great guide for further reading on my part. Highly recommended.

Excellent!

Best treatment of slavery in Missouri to date. I highly recommend to anyone interested in Missouri history or slavery in the Upper South more generally.

Recent history―the very phrase seems like an oxymoron. Yet historians have been writing accounts of the recent past since printed history acquired a modern audience, and in the last several years interest in recent topics has grown exponentially. With subjects as diverse as Walmart and disco, and personalities as disparate as Chavez and Schlafly, books about the history of our own time have become arguably the most exciting and talked-about part of the discipline.

Despite this rich tradition and growing popularity, historians have engaged in little discussion about the specific methodological, political, and ethical issues related to writing about the recent past. The twelve essays in this collection explore the challenges of writing histories of recent events where visibility is inherently imperfect, hindsight and perspective are lacking, and historiography is underdeveloped.

Those who write about events that have taken place since 1970 encounter exciting challenges that are both familiar and foreign to scholars of a more distant past, including suspicions that their research is not historical enough, negotiation with living witnesses who have a very strong stake in their own representation, and the task of working with new electronic sources. Contributors to this collection consider a wide range of these challenges. They question how sources like television and video games can be better utilized in historical research, explore the role and regulation of doing oral histories, consider the ethics of writing about living subjects, discuss how historians can best navigate questions of privacy and copyright law, and imagine the possibilities that new technologies offer for creating transnational and translingual research opportunities. Doing Recent History offers guidance and insight to any researcher considering tackling the not-so-distant past.

Review

Potter and Romano have drawn together an admirably diverse set of scholars and archivists at all levels of the profession to comment on a broad range of critical and contentious issues in historical scholarship. I am unaware of any other collection that accomplishes what this one does so ably: allowing the reader to enter into and contend with a set of larger epistemological, methodological, pedagogical, presentational, and legal issues that directly affect the ways historians do their jobs in the second decade of the twenty-first century. This book should become a standard reference and teaching tool.

(Stephen Brier codirector of the New Media Lab at the City University of New York)

How I wish Doing Recent History had been available when I began writing histories that were ‘just over my shoulder.’ Potter and Romano demonstrate that tackling recent history poses unique challenges, and they offer absolutely indispensable guidance in meeting them.

(Alice Echols author of Hot Stuff: Disco and the Remaking of American Culture)

This book hits all the marks. The writing is lively and well paced; the research and historiography are first-rate; there is a nice mixture of known, established authors and rising young scholars; and the questions taken up are directly relevant to what many of us do every day, both in our classrooms and in our scholarship. It’s timely, smart, wide ranging, and thought provoking.

(Robert O. Self Brown University)

This collection of thoughtful and thought-provoking essays addresses the various pluses and minuses of doing ‘recent’ history.

(K. B. Nutter Choice)

[A]ny historian who reads [Doing Recent History] stands to gain something. . . . Potter and Romano open up the possibility that an all-encompassing methodology is no longer an option for historians. This collection encourages scholars to discard, once and for all, the notion that any history is absolute or completely objective and to recognize the interplay of subjectivity and intersubjectivity involved in doing recent history. This book may help historians accept that studies of recent events are valuable as primary documents in and of themselves.

(Molly Rosner Oral History Review)

Even if you are not a historian, any information professional will learn something from this book, as it covers a large range of topics including those discussed above as well as the commoditization of information, the effect interviewers have upon the oral histories they collect, and much more. This book is highly recommended to all historians, archivists, and librarians.

(Tennessee Libraries)

While the essays address methods of doing histories of the recent past, the lessons presented are ones we can all stand to relearn. I would recommend this book to my colleagues doing recent history, as well as to new graduate students and undergraduates who are being asked to conduct recent history research. (Chad H. Parker Louisiana History)

Doing Recent History is an important volume that will be usefully assigned in graduate seminars, particularly for students shaping original research projects on the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. (Alex Sayf Cummings Journal of American Culture)

A worthwhile collection of essays
By Anson Cassel Mills
It is likely that most people writing recent history will benefit from reading at least one of these essays; it is unlikely that many will benefit from reading most of them. This is a book to be sampled by historians (and student historians) who are doing oral history, who are concerned about archival access, or who are incorporating in their work unusual primary sources, such as TV news and video games. Simply considering the challenges of writing about the last forty years or so would be a worthwhile endeavor for most students of history.

Of course, the writing varies, but overall the prose is better than most collections of academic essays, and they should be comprehensible to a majority of upper-level undergraduates. I could wish that historians of the contemporary world wouldn't lean so reflexively left, but we tiny few on the right regularly practice intellectual triangulation anyway.

The Coughlin-Fahey Connection (American University Studies), by Mary Christine Athans

This study of the theological roots of the anti-Semitism of Father Charles E. Coughlin, famous 'radio priest' in the United States between the World Wars, discovers in the writings of the Irish theologian, Father Denis Fahey, C.S.Sp., a theological rationale which Coughlin used to justify his anti-Semitic utterances after 1938. Fahey, who studied in France and Rome during the anti-Modernist era, imbibed the conservative ideas prominent in the Roman Catholic Church in that period and translated them into English in Ireland thereby making them available to Coughlin, the Protestant leader Gerald L.K. Smith, and others with an anti-Semitic orientation in the United States. The discovery of Fahey's papers in a seminary basement in Ireland (including letters of Coughlin's after he was 'silenced'), sheds new light on Coughlin's theology.
