Georgia has played a formative role in the writing of America. Few states have produced a more impressive array of literary figures, among them Conrad Aiken, Erskine Caldwell, James Dickey, Joel Chandler Harris, Carson McCullers, Flannery O'Connor, Jean Toomer, and Alice Walker.

This volume contains biographical and critical discussions of Georgia writers from the nineteenth century to the present as well as other information pertinent to Georgia literature. Organized in alphabetical order by author, the entries discuss each author's life and work, contributions to Georgia history and culture, and relevance to wider currents in regional and national literature. Lists of recommended readings supplement most entries.

Especially important Georgia books have their own entries: works of social significance such as Lillian Smith's Strange Fruit, international publishing sensations like Margaret Mitchell's Gone With the Wind, and crowning artistic achievements including Jean Toomer's Cane. The literary culture of the state is also covered, with information on the Georgia Review and other journals; the Georgia Center for the Book, which promotes authors and reading; and the Townsend Prize, given in recognition of the year's best fiction. This is an essential volume for readers who want both to celebrate and learn more about Georgia's literary heritage.

Review

A literary Godsend . . . Once in a blue moon a book comes across my desk that I can really use. I mean 'use' as opposed to 'read'; a book that will become part of my reference collection and will serve me well in my literary work. The most recent of such books [is] The New Georgia Encyclopedia Companion to Georgia Literature . . . A tremendous resource . . . A fine new volume. As a literary professional, let me say a very big 'thank you' to those who made this volume possible. You have made my job an awful lot easier . . . and I'm very grateful.

Truman Capote: A Literary Life at the Movies (The South on Screen Ser.), by Tison Pugh

Truman Capote once remarked, “My primary thing is that I’m a prose writer. I don’t think film is the greatest living thing”; nonetheless, his legacy is in many ways defined by his complex relationship with cinema, Hollywood, and celebrity itself. In Truman Capote: A Literary Life at the Movies, Tison Pugh explores the author and his literature through a cinematic lens, skillfully weaving the most relevant elements of Capote’s biography― including his highly flamboyant public persona and his friendships and feuds with notable stars―with insightful critical analysis of the films, screenplays, and adaptations of his works that composed his fraught relationship with the Hollywood machine.

Capote’s masterful short stories and novels ensure his status as an iconic author of the twentieth century, and his screenplays, including Beat the Devil, Indiscretion of an American Wife, and The Innocents, allowed him to collaborate with such Hollywood heavyweights as Humphrey Bogart, John Huston, and David O. Selznick. Throughout his professional life he circulated freely in a celebrity milieu populated by such notables as Marlon Brando, Elizabeth Taylor, and Marilyn Monroe. Cinematic adaptations of his literature, most notably Breakfast at Tiffany’s and In Cold Blood, play with or otherwise alter Capote’s queer literary themes, often bleaching his daring treatment of homosexuality in favor of heterosexual romance.

Truman Capote: A Literary Life at the Movies reveals Capote’s literary works to be not merely coincident to film but integral to their mutual creation, paying keen attention to the ways in which Capote’s identity as a gay southerner influenced his and others’ perceptions of his literature and its adaptations. Pugh’s research illuminates Capote’s personal and professional successes and disappointments in the film industry, helping to create a more nuanced portrait of the author and bringing fresh details to light.

Review
Tison Pugh gives us a thoroughly researched, interpretive, and insightful examination of all the ways Capote’s writing talents, conspicuous celebrity, and uncloseted sexuality intersected in movies and television. Though Capote’s literary reputation primarily rests on his fiction and nonfiction, Pugh illuminates Capote’s versatility in adapting screenplays from the original works of other writers, in his cinematic style in his own original work, in the often subtle gay-themed subtexts of much of his most famous work, and in his unique performance of his gay-celebrity persona, a persona that ultimately influenced estimates of Capote’s literary achievements, inextricably linking his writing with his life. Pugh’s book is an invaluable contribution to the fullest possible picture of one of America’s greatest, most versatile, and most conspicuous writers. (Ralph F. Voss author of Truman Capote and the Legacy of “In Cold Blood”)

With thick paragraphs on every page, each chapter is its own academic essay, with enough content to be stretched into a full collegiate course. This makes for dense reading but also opens many avenues of film and literature to explore as well. It's a hefty book yet rich with insight into Capote's literary and cinematic achievements. (Publishers Weekly)

Pugh's latest is the piece of film history that you didn't even know that your library was missing. It's a fascinating look at the effect of Truman Capote's literature (In Cold Blood) and scriptwriting on film, sprinkled with allusions to his increasing cheekiness in regards to movies of his time (1924–84). . . . This book is not for those seeking a quick read or a photo-filled tome, but for a fresh perspective on the meeting of literature and film, look no further. . . . A must for anyone interested in seeing the connections between film adaptations and quintessential Capote literature. (Library Journal)

This book expertly explains how film studies, film history, and queer theory all converge in the charismatic Capote. A must for anyone interested in seeing the connections between film adaptations and quintessential Capote literature. (Jennifer Thompson The Library Journal)

Pugh does an admirable job of writing about Capote’s relationship with Hollywood and movies without getting caught up in celebrity stories concerning this opinionated author. Well written and thoroughly researched, Truman Capote will be a worthy addition to literature and/or theater collections in academic and large public libraries. (Kathy Campbell Tennessee Libraries)

Georgia in Black and White: Explorations in Race Relations of a Southern State, 1865-1950From Brand: University of Georgia Press

The eleven essays in this collection explore the variety of ways in which whites and blacks in Georgia interacted from the end of the Civil War to the dawn of the civil rights movement. They reveal the extent to which racial matters infused politics, religion, education, gender relationships, kinship structure, and community dynamics. In their focus on a broad range of individuals, incidents, and locales, the essays look beyond the obvious injustices of the color line to examine the intricacies, ambiguities, contradictions, and above all, the human dimension that made that line far less rigid or absolute than is often assumed. The stories told here offer new insights into, and provocative interpretations of, the actions and reactions of the men and women, black and white, engaged on both sides of the struggle for racial justice and reform. They provide vivid testimony to the complexity and diversity that have always characterized southern race relations.

Black on Earth: African American Ecoliterary Traditions, by Kimberly Ruffin

American environmental literature has relied heavily on the perspectives of European Americans, often ignoring other groups. In Black on Earth, Kimberly Ruffin expands the reach of ecocriticism by analyzing the ecological experiences, conceptions, and desires seen in African American writing.

Ruffin identifies a theory of “ecological burden and beauty” in which African American authors underscore the ecological burdens of living within human hierarchies in the social order just as they explore the ecological beauty of being a part of the natural order. Blacks were ecological agents before the emergence of American nature writing, argues Ruffin, and their perspectives are critical to understanding the full scope of ecological thought.

Ruffin examines African American ecological insights from the antebellum era to the twenty-first century, considering WPA slave narratives, neo–slave poetry, novels, essays, and documentary films, by such artists as Octavia Butler, Alice Walker, Henry Dumas, Percival Everett, Spike Lee, and Jayne Cortez. Identifying themes of work, slavery, religion, mythology, music, and citizenship, Black on Earth highlights the ways in which African American writers are visionary ecological artists.

Review

Readers will welcome this call to expand eco-citizenship and rediscover African American contributions to eco-literature, an important task that is barely begun.

(Choice)

Black on Earth has the potential to redefine perceptions of what is truly an underlying and almost invisible cause of subconscious separation between races in our country.

(Phati'tude Literary Magazine)

Well researched and highly original, Black on Earth is an important contribution to the field of ecocriticism and environmental literature. The timing is right for this book, which arrives when ecocritics are rethinking the meaning of environmental literature through the lens of environmental justice and expanding the field to include new voices that represent experiences outside the traditional categories of nature writing. By reframing contemporary writers such as Alice Walker, Henry Dumas, Percival Everett, Octavia Butler, and others as ecological writers―and, conversely, by rethinking environmental literature through the lens of black experience with work, religion, myth, and the blues―Ruffin's study will help to expand the horizons of this literature in a significant way.

(Jeffrey Myers author of Converging Stories: Race, Ecology, and Environmental Justice in American Literature)

An invaluable intervention on the canon of American nature writing, one that opens it to a range of too-long unheard and unheeded voices. Black on Earth demonstrates both the centrality of environmental concerns to African American literature and culture and the vital insights that tradition offers contemporary ecocritical discourse.

(Paul Outka author of Race and Nature from Transcendentalism to the Harlem Renaissance)

This is a much-needed, excellent book. Kimberly Ruffin argues that African American oral and print literary texts have not received the attention they deserve in current ecocritical and environmentalist discussions, and she is absolutely right. The neglect not only ignores an important literary tradition, past and present, but deeply disadvantages contemporary efforts to find solutions to the ecological crises we now face in the United States and around the globe. As Ruffin maintains and demonstrates, African American perspectives offer crucial wisdom that we all need if human beings are to be successful in addressing ecological issues. Black on Earth is original, highly accessible, and enormously needed. I learned a lot and recommend it enthusiastically.

Founded at the University of Georgia in 1947 and published there ever since, The Georgia Review has become one of America’s most highly regarded journals of arts and letters. Never stuffy and never shallow, The Georgia Review seeks a broad audience of intellectually open and curious readers―and strives to give those readers rich content that invites and sustains repeated attention and consideration. Pulitzer Prize winners and never-before-published writers are equals during the journal’s manuscript evaluation process, whose goal is to identify and print stories, poems, and essays that promise to be of lasting merit.

The year 2012 marks the sixty-fifth anniversary of The Georgia Review, and Stories Wanting Only to Be Heard will acknowledge that milestone by presenting a selection of the remarkable short fiction published across the decades. The collection includes the work of well-known writers, many of whom were not yet so well known when first selected for publication by The Georgia Review, and also highlights compelling work from writers whose names may not be as familiar but whose stories are equally compelling and memorable.

The stories collected here―each one vivid, distinctive, and worthwhile to read―stand as testament to the significance of The Georgia Review’s decades of work to identify and promote writing of exceptional quality.

Review

Stories Wanting Only to Be Heard is an anthology of twenty-eight stories that must be read, from the backcountry blues of Jesse Stuart and Harry Crews to the intellectual sophistication of Fred Pfeil and Fred Chappell, from Pam Durban’s terrific “This Heat” to Donald Hall’s blistering “The World Is a Bed,” from Jim Heynen’s charming “Stories about the Boys” to Jack Driscoll’s devastating story about a boy named Judge. In my experience, no other literary publication could shape an anthology as wide in its range of subjects or as varied in its modes of telling. This is not only an excellent anthology but an exciting one.

(Kelly Cherry author of Girl in a Library: On Women Writers & the Writing Life and We Can Still Be Friends: A Novel)

When a journal can bring together work originally published in its pages by such authors as diverse as Mary Hood and Harry Crews, Pam Durban and T. C. Boyle, Jesse Stuart and Ernest J. Gaines, John Edgar Wideman and Jack Driscoll, we readers out here are blessed beyond measure. This is a worthy book. Period.

(Bret Lott author of Ancient Highway)

Lovers of short fiction, rejoice: this is a volume to be celebrated. In an array of styles, across sixty-five years, these stories speak urgently―often with wit, sometimes tragically―about the turns our lives take, the unexpected heartbreak, the astonishing triumph. Voices sing out in these pages, a chorale that expresses the steady, illuminating intelligence of this work and the editors who selected it. Maybe, as the title says, the stories here want only to be heard. Once heard, though, they will be remembered. And passed on. And cherished.

(Erin McGraw author of The Seamstress of Hollywood Boulevard)

The list of authors featured here . . . make this a veritable textbook for aspiring writers and a joy for readers. . . . There is much to be proud of in Stories Wanting Only to Be Heard, and Corey et al. have done a spectacular job of picking through the treasure trove of material from the vast archives of The Georgia Review. It's an enviable job, and one done very well. For those who have given up on fiction, this anthology will bring you back into the fold.

(John G. Nettles Flagpole)

[T]he stories in this collection are of the highest quality. . . .They are memorable and gratifying―just what one would expect from the Georgia Review.

(Terri Lee Hackman Modern Language Review)

The Correspondence of Sarah Morgan and Francis Warrington Dawson, with Selected Editorials Written

The private and public writings in this volume reveal the early relationship between renowned Civil War diarist Sarah Morgan (1842-1909) and her future husband, Francis Warrington Dawson (1840-1889). Gathered here is a selection of their letters along with various articles that Morgan wrote anonymously for the Charleston News and Courier, which Dawson owned and edited.

In January 1873 Morgan met Frank Dawson, an English expatriate, Confederate veteran, and newspaperman. By then Morgan had left her native Louisiana and was living near Columbia, South Carolina, with her younger brother, James Morris Morgan. When Sarah Morgan and Frank Dawson met, he was mourning the recent death of his first wife. She, in turn, was still grieving over her family’s many wartime losses.

The couple’s relationship came to encompass both the personal and the professional. To free Morgan from an unhappy dependence on her brother, Dawson urged her to write professionally for his paper. During 1873 Morgan wrote more than seventy pieces on such topics as French and Spanish politics, race relations, the insanity plea, funerals, and fashion gossip―-editorials that caused a sensation in Charleston.

Only after attaining financial independence through her secret newspaper career did Morgan marry Frank Dawson, in 1874. Morgan’s commentary gives us a candid portrayal of the way one southern woman viewed her postwar world―-even as she struggled to find her place in it.

Review

This compelling volume follows two very extraordinary people as they tried to remake their lives and themselves in the tumultuous years of the post-Civil War South. Roberts is the perfect historical guide: her expert editing, which interweaves published work with private correspondence, elegantly frames the material and draws out its significance, all while allowing her protagonists to tell their own stories. The surprising twists and turns remind us that the unique circumstances of individual lives can provide the most valuable insights into larger patterns of historical change.

(Laura F. Edwards author of Scarlett Doesn't Live Here Anymore)

This book adds immeasurably to our sense of who the Civil War diarist Sarah Morgan was and gives us new insight into the woman of the postwar years. Roberts's decision to include a selection of Sarah's newspaper pieces alongside the correspondence between her and the Charleston editor Francis Warrington Dawson is one that scholars will applaud. She has done a splendid job.

(Charles East editor of The Civil War Diary of Sarah Morgan)

Sarah Morgan and Francis Warrington Dawson are each well known figures in their own right in southern studies. Their courtship correspondence constitutes a surprisingly compelling love story marked by Dawson's passion and Morgan's unwillingness to bury herself in marriage. The letters, embellished by a selection of essays Morgan wrote for the Charleston News and Courier, reveal the deep complexities of the genteel woman's life during Reconstruction. Morgan's shame at having to earn her living by writing is belied by the irreverent wit and sharp perception revealed in her essays on women's lot in the postwar South.

(Elisabeth Muhlenfeld author of Mary Boykin Chesnut: A Biography)

Roberts combines commentary, correspondence and editorials to provide a window to . . . South Carolina after the Civil War.

(Charleston Post and Courier)

The letters and editorials . . . show how southern men and women were forced in the aftermath of the Civil War to create new identities in ways that somewhat reconciled old ideals with new realities. Roberts's insightful introduction places Morgan's correspondence and editorials in the context of the debate about the Civil War as a watershed event for elite southern women.

(Journal of Southern History)

Readers and scholars interested in the post-Civil War South and in male-female relationships will find these letters both interesting and an important addition to what one hopes will be a growing collection of personal documents from this period of southern history.

(Civil War Book Review)

Through recent works on other writers and journalists, such as Mary Bayard Clarke and Augusta Jane Evans, scholars are beginning to appreciate the rich literary legacy left behind by late-nineteenth-century southern women. Roberts's work represents an important contribution to that ongoing effort.

(North Carolina Historical Review)

Roberts' book considerably enlightens readers as to who the Civil War diarist Sarah Morgan was and provides new insight into the post Civil War years in the South.

The Peculiar Democracy: Southern Democrats in Peace and Civil War, by Wallace Hettle

Too often, Wallace Hettle points out, studies of politics in the nineteenth-century South reinforce a view of the Democratic Party that is frozen in time on the eve of Fort Sumter―a deceptively high point of white racial solidarity. Avoiding such a "Civil War synthesis," The Peculiar Democracy illuminates the link between the Jacksonian political culture that dominated antebellum debate and the notorious infighting of the Confederacy. Hettle shows that war was the greatest test of populist Democratic Party rhetoric that emphasized the shared interests of white men, slaveholder and nonslaveholder alike.

The Peculiar Democracy analyzes antebellum politics in terms of the connections between slavery, manhood, and the legacies of Jefferson and Jackson. It then looks at the secession crisis through the anxieties felt by Democratic politicians who claimed concern for the interests of both slaveholders and nonslaveholders. At the heart of the book is a collective biography of five individuals whose stories highlight the limitations of democratic political culture in a society dominated by the "peculiar institution." Through narratives informed by recent scholarship on gender, honor, class, and the law, Hettle profiles South Carolina's Francis W. Pickens, Georgia's Joseph Brown, Alabama's Jeremiah Clemens, Virginia's John Rutherfoord, and Mississippi's Jefferson Davis.

The Civil War stories presented in The Peculiar Democracy illuminate the political and sometimes personal tragedy of men torn between a political culture based on egalitarian rhetoric and the wartime imperatives to defend slavery.

Review

Even though the study of antebellum politics has generated a sizeable historiography, Hettle brings a new approach to the subject by using the work of social historians to explain political culture and extending the critique of southern democracy into the Civil War period . . . Recommended for anyone studying the antebellum South and its social and political structure.

(North Carolina Historical Review)

Hettle distinguishes his study from other fine analyses of mid-nineteenth-century Southern politics by extending his exploration. Hettle believes it is a mistake to conclude such a discussion with the secession crisis, a high-water mark of white solidarity. Instead, he pursues the answer to the question of how democratic the region's Democratic Party was into the war years . . . The Peculiar Democracy was written for specialists. But, the clarity of Hettle's argument and the quality of his prose make his book more than accessible for the interested general reader.

(History: Reviews of New Books)

Hettle has delivered a well-researched and well-argued analysis of the southern Democracy. Furthermore, he has admirably demonstrated that institutional political analysis can be a powerful tool for understanding broader social issues.

(Craig Brashear Alabama Review)

By connecting wartime politics with prewar politics, by illuminating the distinctive features of each state, and most importantly by focusing on the political stress created by slavery, Hettle adds to our understanding of southern politics and to the debate over why the South lost the war.

(Austin American-Statesman)

The Takeover: Chicken Farming and the Roots of American Agribusiness (Environmental History and the American South Ser.), by Monica Gisolf

Economists have described the upcountry Georgia poultry industry as the quintessential agribusiness. Following a trajectory from Reconstruction through the Great Depression to the present day, Monica R. Gisolfi shows how the poultry farming model of semivertical integration perfected a number of practices that had first underpinned the cotton-growing crop-lien system, ultimately transforming the poultry industry in ways that drove tens of thousands of farmers off the land and rendered those who remained dependent on large agribusiness firms.

Gisolfi argues that the inequalities inherent in the structure of modern poultry farming have led to steep human and environmental costs. Agribusiness firms―many of them descended from the cotton-era South’s furnishing merchants―brought farmers into a system of feed-conversion contracts that placed all production decisions in the hands of the poultry corporations but at least half of the capital risks on the farmers. Along the way, the federal government aided and abetted―sometimes unwittingly―the consolidation of power by poultry firms through direct and indirect subsidies and favorable policies. Drawing on USDA files, oral history, congressional records, and poultry publications, Gisolfi puts a local face on one of the twentieth century’s silent agribusiness revolutions.

Review
The Takeover tells us the story of a revolutionary transformation in agriculture’s business model that drove tens of thousands of farmers off the land and rendered others dependent on large agribusiness firms. It is a complicated story, and Gisolfi tells it well. She has meticulously combed USDA files, congressional records, and poultry publications to reconstruct the protracted and convoluted transformation of the poultry business. A real strength of the work is her use of archived oral history interviews with poultry growers to put a human face on what, in the hands of another writer, would essentially be a business and institutional history. The Takeover offers poignant testimony of how independent landowners became, in essence, sharecroppers and shows the impact of that metamorphosis on them and their families. (Melissa Walker author of Southern Farmers and Their Stories: Memory and Meaning in Oral History)

How did the modern poultry industry emerge from a region of cotton farms? What business model can explain why aspiring farmers ended up as powerless, as processed, and as exploited as their chickens? The Takeover deftly examines the agricultural and social history of Upcountry Georgia and reveals the matrix of contract growing, government subsidy, and rural impoverishment that enriched agribusiness integrators and freed these firms from financial and environmental risk. This is a big story about a small place. (Sarah T. Phillips author of This Land, This Nation: Conservation, Rural America, and the New Deal)

Remaking Home Economics: Resourcefulness and Innovation in Changing TimesFrom University of Georgia Press

An interdisciplinary effort of scholars from history, women’s studies, and family and consumer sciences, Remaking Home Economics covers the field’s history of opening career opportunities for women and responding to domestic and social issues. Calls to “bring back home economics” miss the point that it never went away, say Sharon Y. Nickols and Gwen Kay―home economics has been remaking itself, in study and practice, for more than a century. These new essays, relevant for a variety of fields―history, women’s studies, STEM, and family and consumer sciences itself―take both current and historical perspectives on defining issues including home economics philosophy, social responsibility, and public outreach; food and clothing; gender and race in career settings; and challenges to the field’s identity and continuity.

Home economics history offers a rich case study for exploring common ground between the broader culture and this highly gendered profession. This volume describes the resourcefulness of past scholars and professionals who negotiated with cultural and institutional constraints to produce their work, as well as the innovations of contemporary practitioners who continue to change the profession, including its name and identity.

The widespread urge to reclaim domestic skills, along with a continual need for fresh ways to address obesity, elder abuse, household debt, and other national problems affirms the field’s vitality and relevance. This volume will foster dialogue both inside and outside the academy about the changes that have remade (and are remaking) family and consumer sciences.

Review
Attention to home economists’ struggles―whether in attempting to rein in an emphasis on weight at the expense of sound nutrition, or striving to teach women economy and frugality while creating beauty in clothing―provides a nuanced and gendered understanding of government power and control in the twentieth century. While this collection should be required reading for all working in the field of home economics, historians of women, gender, higher education, social reform, and state power will also find much of value in this well-crafted book.
