About the Author
The Author: Paul Ryan has presented his design for an environmental television channel at the Museum of Modern Art, the First International EcoCity Conference and the United Nations. His pioneering video art work has shown in Japan, Germany, Holland, France, Spain and throughout the USA. He has presented his original logic of triadic relationships before the American Semiotic Society. Mr. Ryan taught at the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, The New School for Social Research and New York University. His Earthscore Notational System is published by NASA. A contributor to numerous Journals, he founded and edited the first bioregional magazine in the Eastern Woodlands of North America and is the author of Cybernetic of the Sacred.

The Artist's Greater Purpose

Video Mind, Earth Mind: Art, Community and Ecology is a fascinating collection of essays written by Paul Ryan. Ryan is a theologian, anthropologist, philosopher, ecologist, and an artist. His work is based on the concerns about the Earth's balance and the artist's purpose as a change agent. Video Mind, Earth Mind offers a wide-range of ideas on how video and television can be used to facilitate the needed change to preserve our nature.

Video artist Frank Gillette, referencing the book, says "thus the singular relevance of Ryan's ongoing project resides in bridging the trenches dividing social ecological activism from the aloof preoccupations of art for its own sake." Ryan says the idea behind is book is much like "Suzuki Roshi's classic title Zen Mind, Beginner Mind...Zen invites a fresh way of paying attention to the world. Similarly, to see through a video camera is to begin again. Fresh. I remember carrying my fretful six-month-old daughter from a dark house out into the birdsong of sunrise. Her cries stopped. Her eyes and ears opened to the morning. So did mine. Carrying a video camera on your shoulder is like carrying and infant into the dawn."

The development of the portable video technology into society opened the door for artists to turn to this experimental medium. He finds that experimenting stems from artists using the medium as an outlet for personal means. Gregory Bateson, author of Steps to Ecology of Mind, affirmed to Ryan that the video medium should be used for greater purposes such as changing our embedded behavior about our coexistence with earth. Philosopher Charles Peirce also greatly influenced Ryan interpretations on the philosophy of language systems, sign and symbol, relating this to our ways of watching bio-regions within the framework of a video system.

Ryan discusses various proposals about approaching ways to improve Earth's healthy balance. He talks about the differences between thinking cybernetically and metaphorically. He feels that by thinking cybernetically Earth can fix the differences as long as the Earth stays in balance. For example, if you get a cut on your arm, if your bodies healthy, than it can heal on its own, however, if its not then the cut could get worse and infected. Ryan referred to the work of Joseph Beuys as an example of an artist who used his performance art as symbols for social change. In rallying support within the community to advocate change for religious, political, environmental, and economic issues he cites the underground group, the Passionists, which met secretly to discuss change in catholic religious structure.

His main focus is to support his endeavors in creating a highly sophisticated means of communicating this ecological crisis structured much like television programming. To Ryan the television can monitor nature's events much like television programs monitoring societal changes. Shifts and changes are noticed as there become changes in television programming or the events which are broadcast. He hopes to implement an Eco-channel, which consistently monitors Earth every day.

This book is extremely heavy to read, it is a collection of Ryan's essays and proposals in a 25-year period. Yet the book serves an educational purpose with a wealth of history about video's birth, on its development as a technology and as a medium for artists. His efforts to strengthen the ties between all academic fields is very inspiring and optimistic. Ryan see's the purpose of art and the community as a change agent for shifting our behavioral and thinking patterns towards our ecological environment. His writings offer a global perspective on how your own artwork can impact change in society and our environment by starting at the root, with our perception about living on earth.

In many of the poems―‘Nathaniel’ or ‘Matinee’ or ‘Star Quilt’―the language is quiet and accurate, the details precise, and the emotions―though never insisted upon―are there, unquestionable and complex. Beware of the White Male Poet

This is a work by a white male. It doesn't speak to me and my identity as a Trans Chicano member of the African Diaspora, and though I practice several schools of transcendental meditation, yoga, and visual contemplation, I haven't been able to shake my anger after reading this work which is completely uninformed by any viewpoint but that of a white male. I am aghast that a work so onesided could be published nowadays. The cover even has a picture of a freckled, blue eyed blond boy despite the fact that white children are soon to be a minority in this country plagued by its shameful past. I'm sorry that I purchased several works by this "poet" before learning that he was white.

This is a very smart and thorough analysis of the emergence of neoliberalism as a form of governance. Using the specific case of Micheal Bloomberg's administration in New York City, Brash gives a subtle and lucid (a very unusual combination of traits) account of the Bloomberg Way as particular formulation of the neoliberal mode of governance -- as in part an historical reaction to the fiscal crisis of the 1970s.

Strong Alternative Narrative

Taking from a political economic methodology, Brash does a phenomenal job at analyzing the legacy of privatization and deregulation that the Bloomberg legacy has left on New York. Covers a whole swathe of history concerning the city; and, definitely provides a viable alternative narrative.

By the twentieth century, North Carolina’s progressive streak had strengthened, thanks in large part to a growing number of women who engaged in and influenced state and national policies and politics. These women included Gertrude Weil who fought tirelessly for the Nineteenth Amendment, which extended suffrage to women, and founded the state chapter of the League of Women Voters once the amendment was ratified in 1920. Gladys Avery Tillett, an ardent Democrat and supporter of Roosevelt's New Deal, became a major presence in her party at both the state and national levels. Guion Griffis Johnson turned to volunteer work in the postwar years, becoming one of the state's most prominent female civic leaders. Through her excellent education, keen legal mind, and family prominence, Susie Sharp in 1949 became the first woman judge in North Carolina and in 1974 the first woman in the nation to be elected and serve as chief justice of a state supreme court. Throughout her life, the Reverend Dr. Anna Pauline "Pauli" Murray charted a religious, literary, and political path to racial reconciliation on both a national stage and in North Carolina.

This is the second of two volumes that together explore the diverse and changing patterns of North Carolina women's lives. The essays in this volume cover the period beginning with women born in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries but who made their greatest contributions to the social, political, cultural, legal, and economic life of the state during the late progressive era through the late twentieth century.

This volume is a welcome addition to the scholarship on North Carolina women. Thanks to the book’s careful documentation, high school and college students could use one of the pieces as a springboard for further research on a particular woman or topic. McMILLEN is the Mary Reynolds Babcock Professor of History at Davidson College. The land comprising Robinson Forest was given to the University of Kentucky in 1923 after it had been clear-cut of old-growth timber. Over decades, the forest has regrown, and its remarkable ecosystem has supported both teaching and research. But in the recent past, as tuition has risen and state support has faltered, the university has considered selling logging and mining rights to parcels of the forest, leading to a student-led protest movement and a variety of other responses.

In The Embattled Wilderness Erik Reece, an environmental writer, and James J. Krupa, a naturalist and evolutionary biologist, alternate chapters on the cultural and natural history of the place. While Reece outlines the threats to the forest and leads us to new ways of thinking about its value, Krupa assembles an engaging record of the woodrats and darters, lichens and maples, centipedes and salamanders that make up the forest’s ecosystem. Endeavoring "to argue for the value of an eastern Kentucky ecosystem against the value of a short ton of eastern Kentucky coal," two University of Kentucky faculty members make a forceful case for preserving one of the "most biologically diverse landscapes in North America." Each with years of environmental research and teaching in the Reece (Lost Mountain) and Krupa possess an intimate familiarity with this Appalachian wilderness and the pressures it faces. In 1923 the denuded Robinson Forest was deeded to the University of Kentucky. Regenerated, it is now home to 60 tree species, the state's cleanest waterways, and tremendous topographical and species diversity; a lush verdure that stands starkly opposed to the flattened wastelands of mountaintop removal coal mining all around. The monetary value of the forest's timber and coal remain a constant pressure, but the authors persuasively contend that the value of the forest as a teaching tool and vestige of Kentucky heritage is higher still. They lobby for preservation, but also demonstrate that sustainable forestry strategies could permit for some timber extraction while protecting the greater, enduring resource—the ecosystem itself. Give this book a little and it'll give back a lot

Here's what this book doesn't really have: a story or narrative in any real sense.
Here's what it does have: two dorky academic authors with a deep, deep passion for their subject.
Reece and Krupa will make you care about Robinson Forest if you let them. Don't try to rush this book. (It's not very long anyway, so you can afford to take it slow.) Read it at the conversational pace at which it was written, enjoy the diversions into woodrats and early American settlements, and just try to place yourself in an environment for which the authors have so much love.
The prose is great. Reece argues more stridently for the forest's continued preservation (and makes a good case for why the non-Kentuckian reader should care) while Krupa, the scientist, is a little more didactic.
I'm not super well-read in the genre of nature writing, but this fits right in with authors I have read like Sigurd Olson.

From 1936 to 1957 in letters published in Alabama's major daily newspapers as well as in essays and private correspondence, Juliette Hampton Morgan made some of the most insightful observations on record about Montgomery's racial crises. Mary Stanton traces the development of Morgan's moral conscience amid details about her childhood, her education, and her family, which included a politically ambitious father and a strong-willed mother and grandmother.

Morgan backed her words with action. As a New Deal Democrat, she worked to abolish the poll tax and establish a federal antilynching law. She rarely hesitated to appear in integrated settings, and years before the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott, she was regularly confronting bus drivers over their mistreatment of black riders. Morgan's letters had consequences: she and the newspapers that published them were vilified and threatened. Although the trustees of the Montgomery Public Library, where Morgan worked, resisted pressure to fire her, a cross was burned in her yard, and friends, neighbors, former students, and colleagues shunned her.

This biography, which acknowledges the vital work of a civil rights advocate at the local level, demonstrates the costs of speaking out in a highly conformist society. Morgan took her own life at age forty-three. No one who reads her story can easily dismiss the effects of the rebukes and isolation she endured because of her stand against racism.

Mary Stanton is a public administrator for The Town of Mamaroneck in Westchester County, New York. She has taught at the University of Idaho, the College of St. Elizabeth in New Jersey, and Rutgers University. Her work has appeared in "Southern Exposure," "Alabama Heritage," and the "Gulf South Historical Review." Stanton is also the author of "From Selma to Sorrow" (Georgia) and "Freedom Walk."

A Great Read!

I have lived in Montgomery since I was two, and I had never heard the story of Juliette Hampton Morgan before. Mary Stanton has done an excellent job bringing this lady to our attention. Much could be said, but for now my advice is to read the book.

Lane ponders the sites of old cotton mills; abandoned locks, canals, and bridges; ghost towns fallen into decay a century before; Indian mounds; American Revolutionary and Civil War battle sites; nuclear power plants; and boat landings. Along the way he encounters a cast of characters Twain himself would envy―perplexed fishermen, catfish cleaners, river rats, and a trio of drug-addled drifters on a lonely boat dock a day’s paddle from the sea.

By the time Lane and his companions finally approach the ocean about forty miles north of Charleston they have to fight the tide and set a furious pace. Through it all, paddle stroke by paddle stroke, Lane is reminded why life and rivers have always been wedded together.

If you enjoy rivers this is a must read. Both a journal about paddling and a history of South Carolina rivers, John Lane has given us a delightful story to inspire others to paddle and to write.
Seldom have I had a writer's work prompt me to re read other books. Midway I marked my place and retrieved from my library River of the Carolinas: The Santee by Henry Savage Jr. It would take me several hours to return to Lane's story.

Rich and never boring

Lane's book is filled with information about South Carolina waterways, history, ecology issues and wildlife, as well as personal musings and wonderful tales of outdoor adventures. I've paddled and camped many of the places mentioned and thoroughly enjoyed his book.

About the Author
MONICA McFAWN lives in Michigan and teaches writing at Grand Valley State University. Her fiction has appeared in the Georgia Review, Gettysburg Review, Web Conjunctions, Missouri Review and others. She is also the author of a hybrid chapbook, "A Catalogue of Rare Movements" and her plays and screenplays have had readings in Chicago and New York.

A Stunning Collection

Bright Shards of Someplace Else is a brilliant collection of short stories. Monica McFawn has the ability to create stories rich with complexity and intrigue. Her characters, an eclectic cast of misfits and obsessives, are relatable, sympathetic, and memorable.

McFawn has her own unique style that filters through every page of this book. Her language is, at times, humorous, yet poetic. I was excited about every piece in this collection, and found myself thinking about many of the stories days after I had finished the last line. This is a collection I will read again and again.

Monica McFawn manages to create some excellent reductions in these pages

This book has a quite unexpected and delightfully unique flavor. Short stories are distilled essences; Monica McFawn manages to create some excellent reductions in these pages. As a math teacher, I was especially entranced by her take on numbers and the fascination some people have with them.

I guarantee you will read each story to the end, and have a very vivid picture in your mind of exactly what is happening. And it won't be predictable. Which is the best compliment I can give a writer. :)

A unique, cerebral story collection by a truly gifted writer...

One thing I love so much about reading short stories is stumbling upon story concepts and characters I haven't seen before, and of course, finding beautiful writing. Both were on display in Monica McFawn's collection Bright Shards of Someplace Else.

The characters that populate McFawn's stories are all different—a nanny and her precocious charge, a boss tasked with firing a problem employee, a pompous scientist and the art critic that comes into his circle, a pair of horse trainers and vets—but there is such heart at the core of each of the stories. And each story chronicles a need of some sort—some far more obsessive than others.

My two favorite stories bookend the collection. The first, "Out of the Mouths of Babes," follows a nanny who finds her new charge has a remarkable facility with making phone calls, so she tasks him with helping her solve a few problems. The final story in the collection, "The Chautauqua Sessions," chronicles an aging lyricist whose reunion with his former musical partner is waylaid by his drug addict son, and the lengths he goes to keep his son from affecting his inspiration. A few other stories I enjoyed included: "The Slide Turned on End," which follows a pompous scientist inspired by the intersection of art and science, and the art critic who becomes a somewhat unwilling participant in his work; "Line of Questioning," in which a poetry professor is questioned by police about his relationship with a former student; and "Key Phrases," which follows a fairly new supervisor at a company who is tasked with firing a problem employee.

McFawn, who won the Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction, is a truly gifted writer. There were times, honestly, where her use of language and imagery actually hooked me more than the story's plot itself. Here is one example, from "Line of Questioning":

"Theirs was a comfortable relationship of light mutual contempt that drummed on them bracingly like a light rain when they were together. The old demons of their relationship were soggy but still smelled alluringly like hellfire."

This collection was a bit more cerebral at times than I'm used to with short stories, so I didn't always warm to the plot or the characters. But when I did, I realized what a talent McFawn has, and I look forward to seeing it continue to develop in the future.
