I purchase and read as many books as I can about the Georgia Coast to become more knowledgeable about the area where I am from. I really enjoyed the book and if you love history and aren't from that area specifically, the book is very educational.

Only remotely historical and very filled with personal anecdotes

Every once in a while I actually pay money for a book and in this case I rather wish I hadn't. Usually I go into a "positives vs negatives" analysis on books but in this case I think I'll opt for more of a "this is what this book is" concept.

Firstly, what I expected was hard non-fiction. I wanted a tightly-connected book that described the history of funeral practices in some level of detail. Instead what this book gives you is a rather loose cobbling together of a few historical tidbits and a surprising amount of memoir. Imagine something of the form, "roadside memorials have become increasingly popular; Steve built a roadside memorial in 1976 when his wife died in a terrible accident. She was blonde-haired and blue-eyed and stood 5'8 with a wispy figure and a penchant for pancakes that would make any man weak in the knees." OK, I'm making all that up but that's the general form we're talking about. The book seems to be about 15% history, 15% current day practices and 70% personal anecdote from the author's time writing the book. It's well-written certainly and entertaining in some ways but it's completely not what I expected when I plunked hit the 'buy' button.

The second important thing to know is that the book is not really terribly historical. The first chapter talks about funeral practices of days gone by from hair jewelry to cooling boards but the second chapter is about memorial tattoos and from there we're very much stuck in the present day. So this is a book about TODAY and only remotely historical.

In summary, it's entirely possible that you'll love this book. The author is a good writer and entertaining in a certain sense of the word but you should not buy this book with the idea that it's going to teach you much about the history of the mourning process. It contains a plethora of anecdotes both relevant and not; some entertaining and some not but if you, like I was, are just looking for an exploration of the morbid history of how we deal with those most final of destinations.... this isn't that book. Mary Roach's "Stiff" is probably more your cup of tea.

Well written and insightful

This book is not about the supernatural. It's not about ghosts or near-death experiences. The first chapter is chock-full of interesting and odd facts about the history and evolution of the funeral business and mourning practices. Kate then shares with us some of the unusual ways contemporary Americans mourn and memorialize their dearly departed, and she does so without imparting opinion, endorsement, or judgment, but rather with deft insight and reverence. She also shares interviews with people who work in some facet of the mourning industry. Their jobs are a bit odd, but they do what they do because they are needed, and because mourning isn’t really an industry as much as it is a fact of life. Buy it. Read it.

'American Afterlife' an eloquent survey

What is the landscape of death and mourning in America? Given our potpourri of cultural traditions, the general ebb of religious impulses, and the uniquely American terror of aging and mortality, it’s difficult at best to sketch an outline of it. However, if anyone can delineate its dimensions, it is Kate Sweeney.

“In a sense, death in today’s America is always unexpected. Even when it’s not a literal surprise, it has a power, when first encountered, to deeply jar people who have come of age bathed in the deep unspoken conviction: This is not what is supposed to happen to us. To me. Like those strange dreams in which we find ourselves pushing open the door of a wing of our house we didn’t know existed but now realize was there all along . . . “

Combining the thoroughness of a beat reporter with the skill of an eminently readable social historian, she sets out a clear and densely factual assessment of mourning practices, punctuated with vibrant portraits of such industry-related individuals as a memorial tattoo artist, a funeral chaplain, an obituary writer, an online baroness of crematory appliances, and a photographer who has made memorial portraits of deceased newborns.

Sweeney’s ability to listen and judiciously present leads to a plethora of diverse voices coming through, loud and clear – but it does not exempt an appropriate and apt amount of personal statements by the author in relation to the subject.

Sweeney’s abundance of historical detail contextualizes the state of the art today. The Puritans had no funeral ceremonies – they buried their dead in silence. (They did, however, love to compose funeral elegies.) The double sweep of the evangelical Second Great Awakening and the rise of gloomy, death-obsessed Romanticism led to a revolution in the consideration of death and in the commemoration of the dead. Graveyards became cemeteries; undertakers became funeral directors. In Christendom, at least, the rituals of mourning, the length of the mourning period, and sumptuary customs as rigid as though regulated by law.

Another shift Sweeney clocks is that of the casting aside of Victorian era’s thanatological obsessions in response to the wholesale slaughters of World War I. Multigenerational families, long the norm in American life, began to fragment. Old people were a newly segregated underclass. The aged no longer died at home but in rest homes, nursing homes, retirement homes, old folks’ homes, senior centers . . . Likewise, the body didn’t sit up all night on sawhorses in the front parlor.

Sweeney’s travels lead her to folks who can shoot your remains into space, on put some of you into a necklace or brooch (the Victorian-era funeral jewelry making a comeback!), or bury you in a nature preserve in a wicker basket, or do it “right,” the old-fashioned way, complete with a top-line casket (aka coffin), makeup and fine clothes for the deceased, a viewing, a funeral, a burial. (Thanks to Sweeney, I finally understand the transition from funeral chapel to funeral parlor to funeral home to funeral service. Did you ever wonder why your childhood funeral homes always seemed to be Victorian mansions? “The large houses provided social prominence, expansive living areas upstairs for the directors’ families, and large basements that were ideal for embalming.” Shiver.)

The stats point to a marked increase in cremations and a decline in funeral ceremonies. All aspects of the American death industry are in flux. Like many others, it has undergone a radical consolidation in recent years, one largely overlooked. The old-school family businesses are falling to corporate protocol. Meanwhile, the market fragmentation has led to a lot of non-standard, cut-out-the-middleman approaches toward the care and deposition of the dead, and the observances and needs of the mourning. Even a seeming firefight between obituary writers and their enthusiasts fades to nothing as market realities destroy the beat. Death is certain, but a business model never is.

Sweeney describes funerals as “intricate events involving emotional people.” The daunting, morbid territories she has explored were no less challenging, and she brought us back an eloquent and sharply limned map of them.

In fact, the South attracted over half of the foreign businesses drawn to the United States in the 1990s. Moving between local and global perspectives, the essays discuss how once faraway places like Latin America, Asia, Africa, and the Indian Subcontinent are now having an impact on the South. One essay, for example, looks at a range of issues behind the explosive growth of North Carolina's Latino population, which grew by almost 400 percent during the 1990s-miles ahead of the national growth percentage of 61. In another essay we learn why BMW workers in Germany, frustrated with the migration of jobs to South Carolina, refer to the American South as "our Mexico." Showing that global forces are often on both sides of the matchup―reshaping the South but also adapting to and exploiting its peculiarities―many of the essays make the point that, although the new ethnic food section at the local Winn-Dixie is one manifestation of globalization, so is the wide-ranging export of such originally southern phenomena as NASCAR and Kentucky Fried Chicken.

If a single message emerges from the book, it is this: Beware of tidy accounts of worldwide integration. On one hand, globalization can play to southern shortcomings (think of the region's repute as a source of cheap labor); on the other, the influx of new peoples, customs, and ideas is poised to alter forever the South's historic black-white racial divide.

If I could only have one cookbook this would be it.

This book of southern recipes has changed my life. Nathalie Dupree's two-hour turkey has taken the stress out of Thanksgiving. Her turkey scallopine has made me a legend in my kids' minds. Anticipation of her cheesestraws has made my friends practically drool. Her pineapple upside-down cake is what dreams are made of. The New Southern Cooking recipes are the perfect combination of simplicity and delight.

It really is worth buying!

I practically grew up watching Nathalie Dupree on PBS. (Actually, if the food network had been around then, I don't think my mom would have been able to pry me away from the tv.) I really enjoyed watching her cook. My mom & I used to call her "Miss Messy" since every time she made something, she usually managed to get a good portion of ingredients outside of the bowl or off the plate. This of course makes me feel better now when I'm baking and look down at the flour all over my now big pregnant belly. Buy this book, make a mess and enjoy these great recipes! Through selected articles drawn from the New Georgia Encyclopedia (www.georgiaencyclopedia.org), this collection chronicles the diversity of Georgia’s Civil War experience and reflects the most current scholarship in terms of how the Civil War has come to be studied, documented, and analyzed.

The Atlanta campaign and Sherman’s March to the Sea changed the course of the war in 1864, in terms both of the upheaval and destruction inflicted on the state and the life span of the Confederacy. While the dramatic events of 1864 are fully documented, this companion gives equal coverage to the many other aspects of the war―naval encounters and guerrilla war­fare, prisons and hospitals, factories and plantations, politics and policies― all of which provided critical support to the Confederacy’s war effort. The book also explores home-front conditions in depth, with an emphasis on emancipation, dissent, Unionism, and the experience and activity of African Americans and women.

Historians today are far more conscious of how memory―as public commemoration, individual reminiscence, historic preservation, and literary and cinematic depictions―has shaped the war’s multiple meanings. Nowhere is this legacy more varied or more pronounced than in Georgia, and a substantial part of this companion explores the many ways in which Georgians have interpreted the war experience for themselves and others over the past 150 years. At the outset of the sesquicentennial these new historical perspectives allow us to appreciate the Civil War as a complex and multifaceted experience for Georgians and for all southerners.

"Prof. Inscoe (Georgia), author of Mountain Masters: Slavery and the Sectional Crisis in Western North Carolina and Race, War, and Remembrance in the Appalachian South, divides the book into three broad sections, "Prelude to War", "The War Years", and "The War's Legacy". Each section is further divided into several sub-sections; "The War Years", for example, includes "Military Actions," "Military Support," and "The Home Front". These subsections are filled with short essays or side-bars on a variety of subjects written by various specialists. The result is a total of over 70 discussions or profiles on subjects such as "Georgia in 1860", "Andrews Raid", "Battle of Resaca", "Sherman's March to the Sea", "Confederate Veterans' Organizations", "Unionists", "Slave Narratives", "Cemeteries", "Women", and so forth. Although occasionally some essays have a "Lost Cause" resonance, on the whole they are even-handed, and in many cases even ground breaking, such as the suggestion that operations by Confederate irregulars in the state may have caused more harm than Sherman's alleged depredations. Minimalist introduction to the Civil War

This book is a collection of about 70 articles culled from the website of the New Georgia Encyclopedia that pertain to the Civil War in Georgia. The articles are grouped as Prelude to War, The War Years, and The War’s Legacy, but are so short that the book is perhaps best viewed as a “sampler” of the Civil War. The book is intended to give a flavor and a feel to the Civil War in Georgia, but is inadequate for a deeper understanding of the Civil War.

Most of the significant battles that occurred in Georgia get a chapter; however, disappointingly, very few maps are provided to clarify the maneuvers. Supporting institutions such as hospitals, manufacturing facilities, railroads, newspapers, and prisons primarily located in Georgia’s main cities are recognized. In addition, the situation for unionists, deserters, dissenters, women, and slaves are described.

As this collection makes evident, control of the memories of the Civil War has always been very important to Southerners. Various cities, sites, organizations, activities, books, films, etc have sought to favorably depict the Civil War dating from its conclusion to the present day. In particular, the so-called “lost cause” theme is often advanced. According to this idea, the Confederacy was a gallant cause waged by honorable men to fend off the depredations of unscrupulous Yankees. Slavery, according to them, was a benign part of Southern life that Yankee invaders destroyed. Some of the articles are critical of this idea, but others are accepting.

In many ways the book and the online site are exasperating in their neutrality and passivity to the realities of the South, the Civil War, and slavery. One article in the first section claims that the Civil War was “very much a political war,” that occurred due to political failure. What is not said, is that “fire-eating” Southern social and economic elites drove the political process. America has never figured how to give average citizens a meaningful voice in the political process. An article on Reconstruction scarcely mentions the incredible violence perpetrated on blacks and sympathizers, which continued through several decades of Jim Crow. One author amazingly suggests that blacks and whites hammered out an agreement about freedom after the War.

The book is no more than a very minimalist introduction to the Civil War. Some of the places and organizations that remember the Civil War are not found in traditional histories, so may be useful. To learn about the Civil War and its aftermath such books such as David Potter’s The Impending Crisis, James McPherson’s Battle Cry of Freedom, and Eric Foner’s Reconstruction must be consulted.

This book is extremely well researched and gives the reader a fuller, deeper, and more expansive view of the War and it effects on Georgia. One of the best well rounded full experience reads on the subject. From war front to home front its a wonderful window into the past.

Covering an era from the early twentieth century to the present, this volume features twenty-seven South Carolina women of varied backgrounds whose stories reflect the ever-widening array of activities and occupations in which women were engaged in a transformative era that included depression, world wars, and dramatic changes in the role of women. Some striking revelations emerge from these biographical portraits―in particular, the breadth of interracial cooperation between women in the decades preceding the civil rights movement and ways that women carved out diverse career opportunities, sometimes by breaking down formidable occupational barriers. Some women in the volume proceeded cautiously, working within the norms of their day to promote reform even as traditional ideas about race and gender held powerful sway. Others spoke out more directly and forcefully and demanded change.

Most of the women featured in these essays were leaders within their respective communities and the state. Many of them, such as Wil Lou Gray, Hilla Sheriff, and Ruby Forsythe, dedicated themselves to improving the quality of education and health care for South Carolinians. Septima Clark, Alice Spearman Wright, Modjeska Simkins, and many others sought to improve conditions and obtain social justice for African Americans. Others, including Victoria Eslinger and Tootsie Holland, were devoted to the cause of women’s rights. Louise Smith, Mary Elizabeth Massey, and Mary Blackwell Butler entered traditionally male-dominated fields, while Polly Woodham and Mary Jane Manigault created their own small businesses. A few, including Mary Gordon Ellis, Dolly Hamby, and Harriet Keyserling exercised political influence. Familiar figures like Jean Toal, current chief justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court, are included, but readers also learn about lesser-known women such as Julia and Alice Delk, sisters employed in the Charleston Naval Yard during World War II.

About the Author
Marjorie Julian Spruill is a professor of history at the University of South Carolina. Valinda W. Littlefield is associate professor of history and director of the African American Studies Program at the University of South Carolina. Joan Marie Johnson is a lecturer in women's and southern history at Northeastern Illinois University. Together they have edited volumes 1 and 2 of "South Carolina Women: Their Lives and Times" (Georgia).
