Begetting Images (New Connections), by Mary Baine Campbell, Mark Rollins

The articles in this anthology address a common question: How are images produced and used? The boundaries of the subject are sharply drawn in each article by a focus on images in relation to other forms of representation and expression, and by an emphasis on how the meaning of an image can change. Since such changes are often the result of combining images of different types, or of different periods, they put interpretive methods to the test and reveal how those methods work. The fascination of particular cases discussed here derives from the concrete details and original analyses the authors provide; the comparative approach of the book provokes reflection on the very nature of interdisciplinary research.

Begging as a Path to Progress: Indigenous Women and Children and the Struggle for Ecuador's Urban Spaces (Geographies of Justice and Social

In 1992, Calhuasí, an isolated Andean town, got its first road. Newly connected to Ecuador’s large cities, Calhuasí experienced rapid social-spatial change, which Kate Swanson richly describes in Begging as a Path to Progress.

Based on nineteen months of fieldwork, Swanson’s study pays particular attention to the ideas and practices surrounding youth. While begging seems to be inconsistent with―or even an affront to―ideas about childhood in the developed world, Swanson demonstrates that the majority of income earned from begging goes toward funding Ecuadorian children’s educations in hopes of securing more prosperous futures.

Examining beggars’ organized migration networks, as well as the degree to which children can express agency and fulfill personal ambitions through begging, Swanson argues that Calhuasí’s beggars are capable of canny engagement with the forces of change. She also shows how frequent movement between rural and urban Ecuador has altered both, masculinizing the countryside and complicating the Ecuadorian conflation of whiteness and cities. Finally, her study unpacks ongoing conflicts over programs to “clean up” Quito and other major cities, noting that revanchist efforts have had multiple effects―spurring more dangerous transnational migration, for example, while also providing some women and children with tourist-friendly local spaces in which to sell a notion of Andean authenticity.

Review

With an astute ethnographic eye, Kate Swanson rescripts begging as work, work that brings children and families to towns but provides means for their home villages to stay afloat, work that is embedded in kin networks whose sprawling geographies give new meaning to the notion of extended family, work whose received constructions suggest laziness and shame but which offers young people the autonomy to go to school and otherwise advance in their encounters with a rapidly globalizing economy. Reimagining the situated practices of begging and household reproduction strategies in Ecuador, Begging as a Path to Progress works across scale and locality to see the country in the city, the city in the country, and probe the differentiated consequences of global tourism and policies like ‘zero tolerance’ as they ricochet across national frontiers.

(Cindi Katz author of Growing Up Global: Economic Restructuring and Children’s Everyday Lives)

The 117 pages of text are an eye-opener to an aspect of society all too visible to the passerby but almost totally misunderstood by both locals and foreigners.

(Missiology)

This is an extremely engaging book which challenges many assumptions that are taken for granted around begging, gender and childhoods in Ecuador. . . .Begging as a Path to Progress will not disappoint, for it pushes the reader to consider multiple perspectives and aspects of begging which unravel myths and reveal racist and sexist attitudes towards indigenous girls and young women in Ecuador.

(Samantha Punch Journal of Latin American Studies)

The 117 pages of text are an eye-opener to an aspect of society all to visible to the passerby but almost totally misunderstood by locals and foreigners.

(Missiology)

Begging as a Path to Progress deserves a wide readership. Swanson offers a detailed account of the lives of women and children working as beggars in Quito. In the process, she overturns widely held stereotypes of street kids. The book also offers an off-beat perspective on indigenous issues.

(Ruth Colloredo-Mansfeld Social and Cultural Geography)

Swanson’s overall findings about what rural to urban migration is like for poor indigenous youth, especially women, how young women and children adapt to street work, and the vital role of work in providing a means for poor children to maintain school attendance are exceptional. This book is of particular interest to anyone seeking to understand better rural to urban migration in the global south or street labor as practiced by women and children.

(Thomas A. Offit Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Anthropology)

Swanson’s contribution to understanding indigenous peoples’ survival and urban uplift strategies should stand the test of time as a pioneering ethnographic work on the ethics and politics of Latin American charity.

(Chris Garces Anthropos)

This is a much needed study on the controversial issue of begging, covering gaps in several areas of scholarship. Swanson joins efforts with those advocating for the need to consider culturally diverse notions of childhood already acknowledged by academia, but rarely included in social policy design addressing children in the Global South.

(Patricia Oliart Gender, Place & Culture)

Courthouses of Georgia, by George W. Justice, Association County Commissioners of Georgia

The courthouses of Georgia’s 159 counties hold the keys to the history of individual families and entire communities alike. From their primary role as the temples of justice for our court system to their better-known function as the official repository of public records for significant life events, these buildings anchor many of Georgia’s town squares.

In Courthouses of Georgia, internationally recognized photographer Greg Newington captures the prominence and character of these great structures. His images pay tribute to the community’s investment in preserving historic courthouses for future generations and celebrate new facilities designed to accommodate expanded county programs and services, keeping pace with the state’s tremendous growth.

Courthouses of Georgia commemorates the centennial anniversary of Association County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG), Georgia’s county government association. In his introduction to this lavishly illustrated book, former Georgia House of Representatives majority leader Larry Walker shares memories of county courthouses by legislators, authors, judges, and other notable state figures, and historian George Justice highlights the proud civic and architectural heritage of each structure to provide additional context. Organized by the nine travel regions of Georgia, the book offers the perfect starting point for touring any of Georgia’s counties and instills an appreciation for historic preservation.

Review
The courthouse is where couples are married and where divorces are granted. It’s where bought land is registered and where lawsuits over ‘family inherited land’ are settled. It’s where one gets a gun permit and it’s where murder trials are held. When there is a birth, a record is made, and when there is a death someone registers that also, often in the same office. The courthouse is where one pays taxes and where one might be ordered to pay other debts to society. . . . This is what this book is all about. It’s for us to look, see, and remember: memories good and bad, history laudable and shameful. (Larry Walker from the introduction)

The beauty found in old courthouses.
By George E. Granade
This volume presents as neither a detailed history, nor an architectural treatise, but rather a pictorial delight celebrating Georgia's 159 county courthouses. With 350 pages, it's perfect for the coffee table and informative especially for those having an appreciation
of the vital role that "County courthouses" play in the lives of many Americans. A brief data sheet accompanies each photo. These structures are often historically significant, unique, and frequently stunningly beautiful in their varying architecture styles, though a few are strictly utilitarian.

The Politics of the Encounter: Urban Theory and Protest under Planetary Urbanization (Geographies of Justice and Social Transformation Ser.

The Politics of the Encounter is a spirited interrogation of the city as a site of both theoretical inquiry and global social struggle. The city, writes Andy Merrifield, remains "important, virtually and materially, for progressive politics." And yet, he notes, more than forty years have passed since Henri Lefebvre advanced the powerful ideas that still undergird much of our thinking about urbanization and urban society. Merrifield rethinks the city in light of the vast changes to our planet since 1970, when Lefebvre's seminal Urban Revolution was first published. At the same time, he expands on Lefebvre's notion of "the right to the city," which was first conceived in the wake of the 1968 student uprising in Paris.

We need to think less of cities as "entities with borders and clear demarcations between what's inside and what's outside" and emphasize instead the effects of "planetary urbanization," a concept of Lefebvre's that Merrifield makes relevant for the ways we now experience the urban. The city―from Tahrir Square to Occupy Wall Street―seems to be the critical zone in which a new social protest is unfolding, yet dissenters' aspirations are transcending the scale of the city physically and philosophically. Consequently, we must shift our perspective from "the right to the city" to "the politics of the encounter," says Merrifield. We must ask how revolutionary crowds form, where they draw their energies from, what kind of spaces they occur in―and what kind of new spaces they produce.

What happens when you scale up the familiar to the planetary level? Unexpected alignments and shocking truths come into focus. The spaces for citizenship and the spaces for poverty take on shape, as do the spaces of power and indifference. This is a great little book.

(Saskia Sassen Cities in a World Economy)

Dip into any page of Merrifield's idiosyncratic and learned commentary on urbanity and politics and you'll take away memorable insights. Henri Lefebvre would surely have approved of this fulsome effort to extend and recalibrate his thoughts.

Lowcountry Hurricanes: Three Centuries of Storms at Sea and Ashore (Wormsloe Foundation Publication Ser.), by Walter Fraser Jr.

At once sobering and thrilling, this illustrated history recounts how, for the past three hundred years, hurricanes have altered lives and landscapes along the Georgia-South Carolina seaboard. A prime target for the fierce storms that develop in the Atlantic, the region is especially vulnerable because of its shallow, gradually sloping sea floor and low-lying coastline.

With an eye on both natural and built environments, Fraser's narrative ranges from the first documented storm in 1686 to recent times in describing how the lowcountry has endured some of the severest effects of wind and water. This chronology of the most notable lowcountry storms is also a useful primer on the basics of hurricane dynamics.

Fraser tells how the 800-ton Rising Sun foundered in open water near Charles Town during the hurricane of 1700. About one hundred persons were aboard. All perished. Drawing on eyewitness accounts, he describes the storm surge of an 1804 hurricane that submerged most of Tybee Island and swept over the fort on nearby Cockspur Island, drowning soldiers and civilians. Readers may have their own memories of Hurricanes Andrew, Opal, and Hugo. Although hurricanes frequently lead to significant loss of life, Fraser recounts numerous gripping instances of survival and rescue at sea and ashore.

The author smoothly weaves the lowcountry's long social, political, and economic history with firsthand reports and data accumulated by the National Weather Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Generously illustrated with contemporary and historical photographs, this is a readable and informative resource on one of nature's most awesome forces.

Review

Engaging stories and good data about bad weather, all with the long view in mind. Fraser's book is a fine primer to lowcountry hurricanes.

(Mart A. Stewart author of "What Nature Suffers to Groe": Life, Labor, and Landscape on the Georgia Coast, 1680-1920)

Fraser has assembled an intriguing record of lowcountry hurricane history. It serves as a reminder of how vulnerable our coastal communities really are.

(Jay Barnes author of Florida's Hurricane History and North Carolina's Hurricane History)

After reading Fraser's exhaustive study of low country hurricanes, one cannot be helped but to be impressed by the destruction these storms have wrought. This is a must read for anyone who wishes to understand how hurricanes have helped to shape the culture and history of the region. More importantly, his work is warning of future human misery that will be caused along the Georgia and South Carolina coast unless we prepare with due respect for the power of these monsters.

(David Emory Stooksbury Georgia State Climatologist and Associate Professor Engineering and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Georgia)

Fraser's thorough, well-researched history . . . chronicles the damage [and] the human toll, wrought by more than eighty storms.

(Savannah Morning News)

Fraser brings the unique perspective of viewing hurricane events and impacts as a historian, particularly in relation to environmental history. . . . The book clearly connects how hurricanes affect the landscape with how they impact people, with references to many prominent people in Georgia and South Carolina history.

(Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society)

A thorough and useful chronicle of tropical storms recorded along the Atlantic, 'Lowcountry' coast of Georgia and South Carolina since the latter decades of the seventeenth century. . . . Lowcountry Hurricanes is also just a plain old good read and will have appeal to anyone interested in the fascinating place of weather and climate in the region’s cultural history.

(Southeastern Geographer)

A useful history explaining why weather has played a critical role in defining a region . . . [Fraser] shines in his detailed descriptions of key hurricanes. Events, like the 1822 hurricane, read as intriguing narratives to describe the devastation that such powerful natural disasters could produce. . . . This book contributes to our understanding of development ethics in the twenty-first century and a broader interpretation of natural disasters' impact on society.

A must have for hurricane researchers, students, and layman
By P. C. Nalbone
Terrific book, well written, contains most hurricanes if not all of the big ones in chronological order from the time of columbus, thru the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries ending at the present. Last storm included was Gaston. The book goes into fine detail and concentrates its accounts to the coastal south carolina and coastal georgia areas. This book is for anyone who wants to know every hurricane that has hit the coastal GA and SC areas. WELL DONE! One of my favorite.

Kentucky Women: Their Lives and Times (Southern Women: Their Lives and Times Ser.)From University of Georgia Press

Kentucky Women: Their Lives and Times introduces a history as dynamic and diverse as Kentucky itself. Covering the Appalachian region in the east to the Pennyroyal in the west, the essays highlight women whose aspirations, innovations, activism, and creativity illustrate Kentucky’s role in political and social reform, education, health care, the arts, and cultural development. The collection features women with well-known names as well as those whose lives and work deserve greater attention.

Shawnee chief Nonhelema Hokolesqua, western Kentucky slave Matilda Lewis Threlkeld, the sisters Emilie Todd Helm and Mary Todd Lincoln, reformers Madeline McDowell Breckinridge and Laura Clay, activists Anne McCarty Braden and Elizabeth Fouse, politicians Georgia Davis Powers and Martha Layne Collins, sculptor Enid Yandell, writer Harriette Simpson Arnow, and entrepreneur Nancy Newsom Mahaffey are covered in Kentucky Women, representing a broad cross section of those who forged Kentucky’s relationship with the American South and the nation at large.

With essays on frontier life, gender inequality in marriage and divorce, medical advances, family strife, racial challenges and triumphs, widowhood, agrarian culture, urban experiences, educational theory and fieldwork, visual art, literature, and fame, the contributors have shaped a history of Kentucky that is both grounded and groundbreaking.

The breadth of coverage, whether calculated by the women studied, methodological approaches, chronological eras, or discipline, is remarkable. (Lorri Glover author of Founders as Fathers: The Private Lives and Politics of the American Revolutionaries)

This absorbing book features the stories of fascinating women who contributed in diverse and profound ways to Kentucky and to the nation―it ought to be read far beyond the borders of the Bluegrass State. (Stacy Cordery author of Juliette Gordon Low: The Remarkable Founder of the Girl Scouts)

Dr. Appleton and Dr. McEuen have done an admirable job in covering all areas of the commonwealth to show the remarkable achievements of women in Kentucky history, economics, politics, and the arts. . . . This book finally fills a void in the research and writing of Kentucky history. (Duane Bolin Murray Ledger & Times)

[A]n engaging, intriguing foray into Kentucky's feminine past. Meticulously sourced and short on romanticism, Kentucky Women depicts life as it was for those coming of age in a time where fighting for justice, compassion or one's survival was an inherent part of the female experience. (Kentucky Monthly)

How have women shaped Kentucky history? This well-edited collection of seventeen essays provides an answer in biographical form, profiling twenty-three notable women. Their stories span three centuries and encompass an ambitious range of topics. . . (Penny Messinger Journal of Southern History)

I was duly disappointed in the women chosen for this book
By ResearchHound
Waited forever for this book to arrive. From the first essay, the tone and bias hits the reader in the face. Limited in scope, unless your last name is Breckenridge, I was duly disappointed in the women chosen for this book. The only enjoyable essay in this compilation is the Todd sisters. Again, the writer makes broad assumptions such as "Everyone hated Mary Todd Lincoln because of how she expressed her grief." In another portion of the essay it is suggested that political opinion was gauged based on how each widow bore her grief. Heinous...I'm sorry that I bought this book but for the essay on the Todd sisters, I will keep it.

The Adventures of Ferdinand Count Fathom (The Works of Tobias Smollett Ser.), by Tobias Smollett

The first novel by a major English writer that is devoted to a thoroughgoing portrait of villainy, The Adventures of Ferdinand Count Fathom chronicles the life of an aberrant criminal character. Filled with striking satiric thrusts at the legal, medical, and military establishments of mid-eighteenth-century Europe and England, the novel reveals Tobias Smollett's capacities as a commentator on contemporary life.

First published in 1753, Ferdinand Count Fathom is an experimental work that explores the relations between history and fiction and introduces, for the first time in the English novel, episodes of Gothic melodrama. Too long neglected and never before available in a carefully prepared scholarly edition, Ferdinand Count Fathom may now be read, understood, and appreciated against the literary and historical background of the eighteenth-century world.

Review

The appearance of the first volume of a major scholarly edition of the works of Tobias Smollett is an important event. . . . If the other editors of separate volumes in the series but match Beasley's work with Fathom, the whole project has been well worth the long wait. He has done a superb job. The introduction defines the place of this novel in Smollett's whole career. Also Beasley develops arguments that Fathom was a notable experiment in fiction, 'a serious and unblushing representation of remorseless (at least until the end) villainy,' and that the work represents an attempt to discover a way of presenting the relation between fiction and real life. Beasley's notes, more comprehensive than any ever offered before, are especially illuminating as identifications of literary allusions and historical references. No major research library can afford to pass over this volume. Indeed, all major libraries will want to subscribe to the entire edition. Most highly recommended.

(Choice)

The appearance of Ferdinand Count Fathom is a cause for great celebration. . . . [Beasley’s] detailed and stylish introduction places this neglected novel (so clearly the ancestor of Thackeray’s Barry Lyndon) in the various contexts of Smollett’s career, the eighteenth-century literary scene, and the tradition of the novel. His textual notes are comprehensive, reliable, and exact. . . . It is impossible to imagine anything superseding it for many years to come.

(Eighteenth-Century Scotland)

One of the major benefits of Beasley’s excellent edition of Fathom will be to make Smollett’s most experimental novel better known to eighteenth-century scholars, but also, thanks to its wealth of annotations, to convey to a wider public an intuitive sense of what is felt like to be living in mid-eighteenth century Britain.

(Studies in Scottish Literature)

About the Author
Novelist, playwright, journalist, historian, travel writer, critic, translator, editor, and compiler, Tobias Smollett (1721-1771) was an eighteenth-century man of letters in the fullest sense of the phrase. Though his writings have been variously gathered together over the last two centuries, no definitive scholarly edition of Smollett's works has ever been published. The Georgia edition, though not a complete collection, includes all of those writings by which Smollett was best known in his own time and by which he is best remembered in ours. Prepared by a distinguished group of scholars, the edition conforms to the highest standards of excellence in historical and textual scholarship. Each volume provides an authoritative text, a substantial historical and critical introduction, and extensive explanatory notes.

Arab Spring: Negotiating in the Shadow of the Intifadat (Studies in Security and International Affairs Ser.)From Zartman, I. William (ED

Beginning in January 2011, the Arab world exploded in a vibrant demand for dignity, liberty, and achievable purpose in life, rising up against an image and tradition of arrogant, corrupt, unresponsive authoritarian rule. These previously unpublished, countryspecific case studies of the uprisings and their still unfolding political aftermaths identify patterns and courses of negotiation and explain why and how they occur.
The contributors argue that in uprisings like the Arab Spring negotiation is "not just a 'nice' practice or a diplomatic exercise." Rather, it is a "dynamically multilevel" process involving individuals, groups, and states with continually shifting priorities--and with the prospect of violence always near. From that perspective, the essaysits analyze a range of issues and events--including civil disobedience and strikes, mass demonstrations and nonviolent protest, and peaceful negotiation and armed rebellion--and contextualize their findings within previous struggles, both within and outside the Middle East. The Arab countries discussed include Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia, and Yemen. The Arab Spring uprisings are discussed in the context of rebellions in countries like South Africa and Serbia, while the Libyan uprising is also viewed in terms of the negotiations it provoked within NATO.
Collectively, the essays analyze the challenges of uprisers and emerging governments in building a new state on the ruins of a liberated state; the negotiations that lead either to sustainable democracy or sectarian violence; and coalition building between former political and military adversaries.
