Sprawling Places, by David Kolb

People often bemoan the spread of malls, suburban strips, subdivisions, and other sprawling places in contemporary America. But are these places as bad as critics claim? In Sprawling Places, David Kolb questions widely held assumptions about our built environments.

Kolb agrees there is a lot not to like about many contemporary places, but to write them off simply as commodified “nonplaces” does not treat them critically. Too often, Kolb says, aesthetic character and urban authenticity are the focus of critics, when it is more important to understand a place’s complexity and connectedness. Kolb acknowledges that the places around us increasingly have banal exteriors, yet they can be complex and can encourage their inhabitants to use them in multiple, nonlinear ways. Ultimately, Kolb believes human activity within a place is what defines it. Even our most idealized, classical places, he shows, change over the course of history when subjected to new linkages and different flows of activity.

Engaging with the work of such writers and critics as Henri Lefebvre, Manuel Castells, Karsten Harries, and Christian Norberg-Schulz, Kolb seeks to move discussions about sprawl away from the idea that we must “choose between being rooted in the local Black Forest soil or wandering in directionless space.” By increasing our awareness of complexity and other issues, Kolb hopes to broaden and deepen people’s thinking about the contemporary built environment and to encourage better designs in the future.

Review

The central idea―to provide a critical analysis of new kinds of places, and to offer a defense of them against standard objections―is timely and interesting. Kolb makes effective use of the relevant philosophical and social science literature and provides numerous useful examples. Sprawling Places will find an audience among cultural theorists and analysts of popular culture, philosophers, architects, and urban designers and planners.

(William J. Mitchell author of Placing Words: Symbols, Space, and the City)

Making better places involves more than just improving the architecture―it means being attentive to the social interactions, norms, and meanings generated by a given location. In Sprawling Places David Kolb employs this idea to help us assess and re-assess a variety of contemporary places, from theme parks to traditional suburbs to New Urbanist developments. Kolb asks us to move beyond totalizing critiques of suburban places, and instead evaluate places according to the level of complexity they exhibit and the kinds of social meanings and practices they promote. He shows how this framework can help us think not just critically but constructively about suburban places and how they might be improved by creative interventions, ranging from subtle changes in street-level details to larger-order policy reforms. Theoretically rich yet highly engaging, Sprawling Places offers a fresh and surprisingly hopeful contribution to our understanding of suburban life.

(Thad Williamson coauthor of Making a Place for Community: Local Democracy in a Global Era)

In this polemic, philosopher and place theorist David Kolb deploys more unconventional thinking in the service of what turn out to be common sense ideas. Kolb finds distinctions where others assume homogeneity; his baseline act of discernment is to recognize that suburbs are neither small villages or large cities, and therefore should be approached as unique phenomena.

(New Haven Review)

Flexible interpretations of sprawl are necessary on a planet that shows no signs of divorcing itself from its cars and suburbs, and Kolb provides some imaginative and theoretical tools for reconsidering, with fewer prejudices, both fragmentation and polycentrism.

(Net American City)

Poetry's Self-Portrait: The Visual Arts as Mirror and Muse in René Char and John Ashbery (New Connections), by Mary E. Eichbauer

The intricate relationship between poetry and the visual arts has invited centuries of speculation about a deep connection of all art to mysterious sources of inspiration. In contrast, this study considers their association to be the ideological effect of a «colonizing» gaze which is essentially self-referential. By analyzing the poetry of René Char and John Ashbery, both deeply involved with art and artists, this study persuasively argues that the arts traditionally act for poetry as a kind of muse: a source of inspiration and a mirror for poetic self-definition.

Review
-Though this study concentrates on and elucidates several important poems of two of the most challenging twentieth century poets, its great contribution lies in its exploration of the poet's act of self discovery through representation - a topic of perennial interest - viewed here with a fresh gaze.- (Arnold J. Band, UCLA)
-Marked by a critical and theoretical sophistication, Eichbauer's study provides a compelling reading of two of the twentieth century's major poets and their relationship to the visual arts. It also affords a fresh perspective on the relationship between the visual and temporal arts of painting and poetry and the issues of aesthetic origins, self-reflection and self-portraiture. Her text should prove rewarding reading for scholars of literature and literary theory as well as those interested in the visual arts.- (Kathleen Komar, UCLA)

Mulattas and Mestizas: Representing Mixed Identities in the Americas, 1850-2000, by Suzanne Bost

In this broadly conceived exploration of how people represent identity in the Americas, Suzanne Bost argues that mixture has been central to the definition of race in the United States, Mexico, and the Caribbean since the nineteenth century. Her study is particularly relevant in an era that promotes mixed-race musicians, actors, sports heroes, and supermodels as icons of a "new" America. Bost challenges the popular media's notion that a new millennium has ushered in a radical transformation of American ethnicity; in fact, this paradigm of the "changing" face of America extends throughout American history.

Working from literary and historical accounts of mulattas, mestizas, and creoles, Bost analyzes a tradition, dating from the nineteenth century, of theorizing identity in terms of racial and sexual mixture. By examining racial politics in Mexico and the United States; racially mixed female characters in Anglo-American, African American, and Latina narratives; and ideas of mixture in the Caribbean, she ultimately reveals how the fascination with mixture often corresponds to racial segregation, sciences of purity, and white supremacy. The racism at the foundation of many nineteenth-century writings encourages Bost to examine more closely the subtexts of contemporary writings on the "browning" of America.

Original and ambitious in scope, Mulattas and Mestizas measures contemporary representations of mixed-race identity in the United States against the history of mixed-race identity in the Americas. It warns us to be cautious of the current, millennial celebration of mixture in popular culture and identity studies, which may, contrary to all appearances, mask persistent racism and nostalgia for purity.

Review

Intriguing and engaging. Bost draws together strands of racial, sociohistorical, and literary analysis in an effective and original fashion.

(Yvonne Yarbro-Bejarano Stanford University)

Utterly convincing and timely. This is a splendid and ambitious book, deftly and successfully executed.

(Vera Kutzinski Yale University)

A significant addition to the developing field of literatures of the Americas . . . a work of this kind is long overdue.

(Gay Wilentz East Carolina University)

Her study is particularly relevant in an era that promotes mixed-race musicians, actors, sports heroes and supermodels as icons of a ‘new’ America. Bost challenges the popular media’s notion that a new millennium has ushered in a radical transformation of American ethnicity.

(Diverse Issues in Higher Education)

Her book is meant to challege . . . The challenge is important because, as Bost argues, bi-identities have always been a problematic part of American identity, and have, until this recent fascination with the 'changing face of America,' been marginalized.

(MultiCultural Review)

[A] valuable analysis of texts about mixed-race ancestry . . . The author draws interesting parallels between the experiences of people who blur gender lines and people who blur color lines.

(Los Angeles Times Book Review)

This is a brave and admirable study that attempts to address in a serious and systematic way the cultural repercussions of racial mixture.

(American Literary History)

Bost's ability to critique so large a range of literature on several analytical fronts is impressive, making her work enormously useful to historians of race and gender in the Americas.

Remembering Medgar Evers: Writing the Long Civil Rights Movement (Mercer University Lamar Memorial Lectures Ser.), by Minrose Gwin

As the first NAACP field secretary for Mississippi, Medgar Wiley Evers put his life on the line to investigate racial crimes (including Emmett Till’s murder) and to organize boycotts and voter registration drives. On June 12, 1963, he was shot in the back by white supremacist Byron De La Beckwith as the civil rights leader unloaded a stack of “Jim Crow Must Go” T-shirts in his own driveway. His was the first assassination of a high-ranking public figure in the civil rights movement.

While Evers’s death ushered in a decade of political assassinations and ignited a powder keg of racial unrest nationwide, his life of service and courage has largely been consigned to the periphery of U.S. and civil rights history. In her compelling study of collective memory and artistic production, Remembering Medgar Evers, Minrose Gwin engages the powerful body of work that has emerged in response to Evers’s life and death―fiction, poetry, memoir, drama, and songs from James Baldwin, Margaret Walker, Eudora Welty, Lucille Clifton, Bob Dylan, and Willie Morris, among others. Gwin examines local news accounts about Evers, 1960s gospel and protest music as well as contemporary hip-hop, the haunting poems of Frank X Walker, and contemporary fiction such as The Help and Gwin’s own novel, The Queen of Palmyra. In this study, Evers springs to life as a leader of “plural singularity,” who modeled for southern African Americans a new form of cultural identity that both drew from the past and broke from it; to quote Gwendolyn Brooks, “He leaned across tomorrow.”

Fifty years after his untimely death, Evers still casts a long shadow. In her examination of the body of work he has inspired, Gwin probes wide-ranging questions about collective memory and art as instruments of social justice. “Remembered, Evers’s life’s legacy pivots to the future,” she writes, “linking us to other human rights struggles, both local and global.”

Review

In Remembering Medgar Evers, Minrose Gwin has woven an intricately textured appreciation of that stunningly brave man, his tortured time, and the deeper meaning of his arduous life and brutal murder. Toiling in relative obscurity to overcome white supremacy in Mississippi, brought down by a racist assassin who publicly exulted for decades thereafter, Evers was both unique and representative of black Americans’ unfinished march toward full equality. Gwin makes sure that we cannot forget either reality.

(Hodding Carter University Professor of Leadership and Public Policy, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill)

This is a book that should be widely read, shared with others, and placed in a spot of honor in every library. It tells important and all too often forgotten stories of the times with clarity and passion. It is a treasure.

(Myrlie Evers-Williams Widow of Medgar Evers)

A worthy tribute to one of the civil rights era's most important and overlooked figures, an essential interrogation of Medgar Evers–themed works of some of the most important American artists of the last half century, and an intelligent examination of art meets activism.

(Frank X. Walker author of Turn Me Loose: The Unghosting of Medgar Evers)

In a time when forgetting is easier than remembering, Minrose Gwin brilliantly reconstitutes one of the signal moments of the civil rights movement and persuasively reconfigures its significance. Remembering Medgar Evers is both an all-important testimony to the necessity of the memory of the man, the moment, and the movement and a compelling explanation of Medgar’s relevance and persistence in black cultural production. Culling not only factual accounts from contemporary media sources but also creative responses from writers and musicians, Gwin memorializes the long civil rights struggle in Mississippi and the role Medgar’s life and death played in it. She skillfully merges the theoretical work of American literary and cultural studies with a moving analysis of the power of righteous social action and political justice in the United States.

(Thadious M. Davis author of Southscapes: Geographies of Race, Region, and Literature)

Gwin has created that most unlikely of books―a piece of literary criticism that also is a moving document of our time.

(Cliff Bellamy Durham Herald-Sun)

Evers is. . .championed in a new book by Minrose Gwin. . . . Gwin felt that Evers' life of service and courage had been left on the periphery of Civil Rights history. She examines the powerful body of work that has emerged in response to his life and death. . . . [A]nyone who wants to learn more about the history of the Civil Rights Movement and quiet bravery of Medgar Evers [should] pick up Gwin's book.

(Deep South Magazine)

A Profound Survey of Prose, Music, Memoire, of Medgar Evers
By Howard M. Romaine
This new book by Minrose Gwin, a literary scholar, and novelist, is the most intense survey of the various takes
on the death of Medgar Evers in June, 1963, fifty years ago, which I've ever read. Not a reader of the New Yorker then,
I had no knowledge that the venerable Mississippi novelist,Eudora Welty ,contributed a piece to the magazine shortly after the murder, and I've yet to read the compilation of speeches and facts produced by his widow, Myrlie Evers, later to become
a national NAACP leader after moving to Los Angeles, but Bob Dylan's "A Bullet from the back of the bush, took Medgar Evers' blood..he's only a 'pawn in their game,' continues to ring in my mind, as it did when I reported for duty the summer after the murder, as one of the "soldiers in the non-violent army" recruited to bear witness against the state's sysetmatic murder and oppression policy. Nor have I read Wille Morris's account, so my view is limited, but I have never
been so entranced by a serious academic book, some with fifty or more footnotes a chapter, so felicitously and compellingly written. She does fail to discuss Nashville's Will Campbell's intense memoire of himself and his brother
during that period, Brother to A Dragon Fly, and her take on Dylan's song seems awkward to such a devout fan or follower
as myself, but it certainly is an indepth and flowing study of the intersection of the Mississippi movement and the
murderous impulse which flowed so strongly then, and ever seems to be one of the deepest rivers of institutional hatred
in the good old hating, repressive jurisdictions of the USA.

Of Thee I Sing: Poems (The Contemporary Poetry Ser.), by Timothy Liu

In his fifth book of poems, Timothy Liu addresses a tripartite “Thee”: the Divine, the Beloved, and the State. A precarious dance between the spiritual and the material ensues, the lyric poem confronting a consumer culture overrun by rampant lust and greed yet finding itself unable to wholly stand outside of what it critiques. Any consolation found herein is short-lived. Even so, by extending the traditions of lyric poetry forward, these utterances seek to enlarge the conversation between art and life, anticipating whatever commerce the future might yet hold.

From Publishers Weekly
Liu's attractive fifth book departs from his previous work in its denser style, but not in its themes: intense devotion to gay male desire collides with painful self-scrutiny, political protest and snapshots of far-flung America, from New Jersey (where the poet teaches and lives) to the "red states" and their evangelical demands. Liu tackles these subjects in tough, sometimes fragmentary, free verse, starting with a terse, thoughtful "Ars Poetica": "All the world day-trading suicide shares.... The craft could be taught but not the art." A three-time Lambda Award nominee, Liu (Say Goodnight) still aims to shock ("Let me be your rotisserie Christ"), but those shocks are here aggregated toward a greater cause, as his poetry presses for understandings based on the body ("Flesh knows no future/ but itself, each of us mining a secret dream") and celebrates gay America from backseat to shining sea. One series links the end of a relationship to the expulsion from Eden, "Cruel speech soiling the nuptial bed"; other poems meld a post-Miltonic high style to down-and-dirty reportage, mixing choppy and verbally challenging poems with more fluid, narrative affairs. In Liu's hyperreal nation of passion and distress, "Innocence// means nothing to us now"; decadents and hayseeds join hands and cry out, while "sons who had once studied law// at their father's behest" are "sworn into a cult of moonlit chinoiserie."

Review

Timothy Liu writes out of an angry materialism, ill-fitting body, disappointment at every turn. He takes on his point of view wholeheartedly and compresses the consequences into phrases that echo and mimic each other, thereby increasing the sensation of claustrophobia and fever. Lots of humor erupts to keep the machine going. Is will the same as desire? It didn't used to be, but now it is. His poetry is fully present to the time we are in, and takes it on as a serious failure of intention.

(Fanny Howe author of The Wedding Dress)

With formidable invention, Tim Liu has made a book that is the 'flesh canoe' of liberty, American liberty. Family, sex, art, the fissures of liberty: 'America's / indigenous sublime.' By his eloquent, memorable, unappeased example, Liu enjoins us to do what Ginsberg did, put our queer shoulders to the wheel.

(Frank Bidart)

The book’s greatest strength is Liu’s willingness to pick through American culture and his personal life while acknowledging that ‘Innocence means nothing / to us now.’ This stark vision, compelling him to wonder ‘So what if poetry / burns itself to the ground,’ has become as necessary as it is unsettling.

(Times Literary Supplement)

[Liu's] poems provide plenty of reward . . . Liu's monostichs, full sentences as well as stark fragments, read like sound bites or news tickers at the bottom of a TV news screen. As such they seem prophetic.

(North American Review)

Liu’s pointed imagery is rendered in meticulously metered verse, often in elegantly enjambed couplets or triplets or single end-stopped lines, with frequent references to art, music, and biblical or Greek mythology. His work evokes Rilke’s and Rodin’s contemplations of a fragmented, yet enduringly luminous and transformative sculpture of Apollo.

(Multicultural Review)

Intense devotion to gay male desire collides with painful self-scrutiny, political protest and snapshots of far-flung America in Timothy Liu's Of Thee I Sing, forming a hyperreal nation of passion and distress 'sworn into a cult of moon-lit chinoiserie.'

(Publishers Weekly)

Liu’s transformations are startling and original, with lush language and series of fragmentary images to illustrate the tensions between the divine, the political and the physical.

Making Catfish Bait out of Government Boys: The Fight against Cattle Ticks and the Transformation of the Yeoman South (Environmental Histor

This first full-length study of the cattle tick eradication program in the United States offers a new perspective on the fate of the yeomanry in the twentieth-century South during a period when state and federal governments were both increasing and centralizing their authority. As Claire Strom relates the power struggles that complicated efforts to wipe out the Boophilus tick, she explains the motivations and concerns of each group involved, including large- and small-scale cattle farmers, scientists, and officials at all levels of government.

In the remote rural South―such as the piney woods of south Georgia and north Florida―resistance to mandatory treatment of cattle was unusually strong and sometimes violent. Cattle often ranged free, and their owners raised them mostly for local use rather than faraway markets. Cattle farmers in such areas, shows Strom, perceived a double threat in tick eradication mandates. In addition to their added costs, eradication schemes, with their top-down imposition of government expertise, were anathema to the yeomanry’s notions of liberty.

Strom contextualizes her southern focus within the national scale of the cattle industry, discussing, for instance, the contentious place of cattle drives in American agricultural history. Because Mexico was the primary source of potential tick reinfestation, Strom examines the political and environmental history of the Rio Grande, giving the book a transnational perspective. Debates about the political and economic culture of small farmers have tended to focus on earlier periods in American history. Here Strom shows that pockets of yeoman culture survived into the twentieth century and that these communities had the power to block (if only temporarily) the expansion of the American state.

Review

Strom gives the reader a look, literally, through an enormous microscope and then slowly pulls back the lens. . . . This creative organization is one of the book's strengths because it connects the environment, people, and politics in a way that many environmental histories claim to do, but few actually accomplish.

(Journal of Southern History)

Historians interested in environmental history and the new South will find the well-researched Making Catfish Bait out of Government Boys an important addition to the historiography. Despite the complicated science involved in tick eradication the work is accessible and timely, especially considering the issues surrounding the proper extent of federal power. The narrative, with plenty of shotgun blasts and dynamite explosions alongside helpful maps, makes this work an engaging and worthwhile read.

(Southwestern Historical Quarterly)

Extends the story of southern yeomen well into the twentieth century and uses the tick eradication issue as a window into their changing world. Anyone interested in the changing landscape of the American South will want to read Strom's fine and engaging book.

(Mark Wetherington author of Plain Folk's Fight: The Civil War and Reconstruction in Piney Woods Georgia)

Raises important new questions about the unusual role that yeomen played in the modernization of American agriculture. Strom offers intriguing insights into the problematic nature of technological and scientific change: while such change might 'lift all boats' in the abstract and long term, in the short term many supposed beneficiaries paid a steep price. She does a great job of telling that side of the story and of showing how resistance to new ideas and practices also helps shape their ultimate form and impact.

(Deborah Fitzgerald author of Every Farm a Factory: The Industrial Ideal in American Agriculture)

Claire Strom has woven together a wonderful tale of protozoa, insects, cattle, farmers, bureaucrats, politics, and geography revolving around the New South initiative to eradicate tick-borne Texas fever (babesiosis), the range of which roughly matched the contours of the South. This is a wide-ranging monograph in both topical and spatial terms, but Strom neatly ties everything together by using the southern yeoman farmer as the lens through which to view southern development.

(Georgia Historical Quarterly)

Making Catfish Bait out of Government Boys makes an important contribution to the agricultural, political, and cultural history of the South.

(Journal of Mississippi History)

Prophet from Plains: Jimmy Carter and His Legacy, by Frye Gaillard

Prophet from Plains covers Nobel Peace Prize winner Jimmy Carter's major achievements and setbacks in light of what has been at once his greatest asset and his greatest flaw: his stubborn, faith-driven integrity. Carter's remarkable postpresidency is still in the making; however, he has already redefined the role for all who follow him.

Frye Gaillard, who wrote extensively about Carter at the Charlotte Observer, was among the first to take the Carter postpresidency seriously and to challenge many accepted conclusions about Carter's term in office. Carter was not an irresolute president, says Gaillard, but rather one so certain of his own rectitude that he misjudged the importance of "selling" himself to America. Ranging across the highs and lows of the Carter presidency, Gaillard covers the energy crisis, the Iran hostage situation, the Camp David Accords, the Panama Canal and other treaties, and the new diplomatic emphasis on human rights.

Carter's established priorities did not change once he was out of office, but he was far more effective outside the strictures of presidential politics. Gaillard's coverage of this period includes Carter's friendship with Gerald R. Ford, his work through the Carter Center on disease control and election monitoring, and his association with Habitat for Humanity.

Prophet from Plains locates Carter in the tradition of Old Testament prophets who took uncompromising stands for peace and justice. Resisting the role of an above-the-fray elder statesman, Carter has thrust himself into international controversies in ways that some find meddlesome and others heroic.

Review

A thoughtful work on one of the world's heroic peacemakers. During the past thirty years, no individual has done more to resolve conflicts, promote human rights and democracy, and eradicate debilitating diseases than Jimmy Carter, and yet he and his presidency have been subject to severe criticism. Prophet from Plains weighs both sides as Gaillard chronicles Carter's journey and evaluates his legacy.

(Robert A. Pastor Vice President of International Affairs and Professor of International Relations, American University)

Without pretending to be a comprehensive biography, Prophet from Plains provides an engaging, deeply informed account and interpretation of Jimmy Carter’s presidency and his myriad pursuits in the decades since he left office. Generally laudatory without overlooking Carter’s flaws, it highlights the Carter Center’s remarkable success in tackling deadly but curable diseases, the former president’s work with Habitat for Humanity, his personal courage in monitoring elections around the world, and his passionate commitment to peace and human rights. Captivating in itself, Carter’s story is enhanced by Frye Gaillard’s gifts as a keen observer and skilled storyteller. This book is a valuable contribution by a first-rate writer at the top of his form.

(William Martin author of A Prophet with Honor: The Billy Graham Story)

This is a timely chronicle of an extraordinary life, a rich-in-anecdotes account of how Jimmy Carter struggled with mixed results as an unpopular president, then pressed ahead with striking success in tackling international problems to become one of the world's most popular statesmen. Carter's political foes as well as friends should find this book interesting because it is a warts-and-all portrait of a politician who still stirs strong feelings among his detractors as well as adulation among his supporters.

(Jack Nelson retired Washington Bureau Chief, Los Angeles Times)

Gaillard presents a succinct, clear-eyes and nuanced look at Carter's presidency and post-White House life. . . . Prophet from Plains, which treats Carter fairly but doesn't flinch from exposing his faults, is a very worthy, and welcome, addition to the literature on the man who, for better or worse (or both), has had one of the most remarkable post-presidencies in U.S. history.

(Creative Loafing Charlotte)

Gaillard quotes authoritative sources reporting that while some of Carter's political failings were serious, there were indeed positive aspects of his presidency that have been overlooked and not given the weight they deserve.

(Wayne A. Holst National Catholic Reporter)

Gaillard is a fluid writer, one immersed in Southern culture. He sees Carter's own coming of age in the Civil Rights era as helping develop the moral force and 'instinctive empathy' that has served him better as a former president than a sitting one.

(Jim Morrill Charlotte Observer)

Incisive, insightful . . . Gaillard presents a succinct, clear-eyed and nuanced look at Carter's presidency and post-White House life, expanding on and clarifying his view of Carter as a genuinely unique American character, albeit one who's prone to stubbornness and impatience.

(Creative Loafing)

Gaillard's engaging narrative presents a revisionist perspective of the legacy of Jimmy Carter's presidential and postpresidential years. . . . The profile that emerges is that of a complicated man of integrity, promise, and accomplishments. . . . [A] positive addition to the historiography of the Carter legacies.

(Frederick V. Mills Sr. Georgia Historical Quarterly)

Good Overview of JC
By Dale
If you have time for only one Carter book, this is it. It gives a very good overview of this great man and I have to say it reads more dyanamically than "Beyond the years" and other books written by Carter himself, although not to take away from these. History will continue to look favorably upon Carter. Too bad he had such bad presidential years but then we now know it does not correlate to later accomplishments.

Good Introduction
By Patricia C. Stendal
This book gives a good introduction to our 39th president. It covers the facts. I was hoping to learn more about Rosalyn and the part she played in the administration, since she got so much criticism for her audacity to sit in on cabinet meetings, etc. Since then, I believe other first ladies were not relegated to such a passive roll as was expected for the ladies before Rosalyn. Of course Eleanor Roosevelt wasn't passive, but she pretty much went off on her own itinerary
