Drawing from untapped sources, including interviews he conducted with twenty-five sitting and former black members of Congress, Musgrove tells new stories and reinterprets familiar events. His cast of characters includes Julian Bond, Adam Clayton Powell Jr., Alcee Hastings, Ronald Dellums, Richard Arrington, and Marion Barry, as well as white political figures like Newt Gingrich and Jefferson Sessions. Throughout, Musgrove connects patterns of surveillance, counterintelligence, and disproportionate investigation of black elected officials to the broader political culture. In so doing, he reveals new aspects of the surveillance state of the late 1960s, the rise of adversary journalism and good government reforms in the wake of Watergate, the official corruption crackdown of the 1980s, and the allure of conspiracy theory to African Americans seeking to understand the harassment of their elected leadership.

Moving past the old debate about whether there was a conscious conspiracy against black officials, Musgrove explores how the perception of harassment shaped black political thought in the post–civil rights era. The result is a field-defining work by a major new intellectual voice.

Drawing on a mix of historical and anthropological methods, Beasley covers such topics as church architecture, pew seating customs, marriage, baptism, communion, and funerals. Colonists created an environment in sacred time and space that framed their rituals for maximum social impact, and they asserted privilege and power by privatizing some rituals and by meting out access to rituals to people of color. Throughout, Beasley is sensitive to how this culture of worship changed as each colony reacted to its own political, environmental, and demographic circumstances across time. Local factors influencing who partook in Christian rituals and how, when, and where these rituals took place could include the structure of the Anglican Church, which tended to be less hierarchical and centralized than at home in England; the level of tensions between Anglicans and Protestants; the persistence of African religious beliefs; and colonists’ attitudes toward free persons of color and elite slaves.

This book enriches an existing historiography that neglects the cultural power of liturgical Christianity in the early South and the British Caribbean and offers a new account of the translation of early modern English Christianity to early America.

is highly readable. I'd missed his lecture series in Greenwood, SC as I am home-bound
but the book made the difference and I'll pass it along to other interested people

This is the first edition of the correspondence of Philip Quaque, a prolific writer of African descent whose letters provide a unique perspective on the effects of the slave trade and its abolition in Africa.

Born around 1740 at Cape Coast, in what is now Ghana, Quaque was brought to England by the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel. In 1765 he became the first African ordained as an Anglican priest. He returned to Africa and served for fifty years as the society’s missionary and also as chaplain to the Company of Merchants Trading to Africa (CMTA) at Cape Coast Castle, the principal slave-trading site of the CMTA.

Quaque sent more than fifty letters to London and North America reporting on his successes and failures, his relationships with European and African authorities, and his observations on the effects of the American and French revolutions on Africa. The regular references to his African mission in popular magazines made Quaque well known in the English-speaking world. Initially writing when the transatlantic slave trade went largely unquestioned, Quaque in his later letters traces the period of abolitionist fervor leading up to the ban in 1808. Although his employers supported and facilitated slavery, Quaque’s letters reveal his evolving opposition to both slavery and the slave trade, particularly in his correspondence with early abolitionists.

Quaque’s life offers a fascinating perspective on transatlantic identity, missionary activity, precolonial European involvement in Africa, the early abolition movement, and Cape Coast society.

A valuable resource

There has a been a lot written about early attempts to send black missionaries to Africa, with Quaque frequently mentioned, but this book fills a distinct need. It is a scholarly, thorough treatment of his life that brings together his letters from repositories around the world. His work is carefully placed in the wider contexts of politics, commerce, and religion. I was very happy to find this book.

Beidler also looks at Vietnam alongside other conflicts―including the war on international terrorism. He once hoped, he says, that Vietnam had fractured our sense of providential destiny and geopolitical invincibility but now realizes, with dismay, that those myths are still with us. “Americans have always wanted their apocalypses,” writes Beidler, “and they have always wanted them now.”

A Must Read, Especially Now

How quickly we forget. The "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth" and Ted Sampley run John Kerry through the mill for his "betrayal" of the troops who served in Vietnam in his testimony in the Senate in 1971. Dr. Beidler reminds us that it wasn't the soldiers that were to blame for the atrocity that was the Vietnam War but the blind stupidity of the political and military leadership that led to, and kept us in, a war that we were never going to win. Read this and "They Marched Into Sunlight" to get a refresher on why things were they way they were in the late 60's and early 70's. I particularly appreciate Dr. Beildler's perspective on the totally superficial "sacrifices" of the American public in the current war. In speaking of the soldiers of this war he says, "Don't come home expecting anybody to remotely care". We are too busy on our cell phones.

Trying to come to terms with Vietnam

Philip D. Beidler served in Vietnam from May 1, 1969 to April 30, 1970 in an armored cavalry unit, first as a platoon leader, then as executive officer. Upon his return to civilian life he went on to graduate school and an academic career at the University of Alabama. After fifteen or so years trying to forget about Vietnam, he realized that that was impossible, and he resigned himself to being one of those "who lives with the war every minute of our lives" and, in addition to his academic specialty of early American literature, he became "a critic and interpreter of literary and popular-culture representations of the war."

LATE THOUGHTS ON AN OLD WAR, which was published in 2004, is a collection of essays from the two or three years on each side of the turn of the millennium. They are worth listing individually:
* "The Language of the Nam" - The in-country vocabulary for virtually everything, from "gook" to "short" to "uniform tango" to "the LBJ" to "VPCOD".
* "Solatium" -- U.S. military compensation paid to Vietnamese citizens to alleviate grief for the death of a family member; the going rate for someone fifteen or older was $35, under fifteen was $14.40.
* "Just Like in the Movies" - Nixon gets inspiration from the movie "Patton".
* "How I Flunked Race in Vietnam" - The racial meltdown in the U.S. Army.
* "Late Thoughts on `Platoon'" - Viewing the movie thirty years after leaving Vietnam and fifteen years after the movie's release.
* "The Music of the Nam"--The "first rock `n' roll war" and its signature songs, especially "We Gotta Get Out of this Place".
* "Viet Pulp" - Paperbacks about Vietnam, most of which - whether nominally first-person memoirs or fiction -- follow a common narrative pattern.
* "Sorry, Mr. McNamara" - The author's reactions to McNamara's apology of sorts in "In Retrospect": "Sorry, Mr. McNamara, but dead is dead, and sorry don't mean s***."
* "Calley's Ghost" - My Lai.
* "Wanting to Be John Balaban" - One American young man's principled alternative response to the conflict in Vietnam.
* "The Years" - The long view and cultural memory; a summation of sorts.

There is some repetition or overlap among the essays, which makes for my only niggling criticism of the book. Of course, not all of the essays are equally strong, but they all are solid. The last four are the best; they might even be deemed essential reading. Although Beidler is a college professor, the writing is far from academic. Indeed, it is top-notch.

Although I didn't serve in Vietnam, I empathize (to the extent possible) with those who did. Still, the war was a terrible mistake, an unforgivably arrogant, stupid, and deceitful escapade of our leaders. We no longer deprecate the service of Vietnam veterans, but, at least in popular culture, we seem to have gone too far in the opposite direction towards rationalizing, romanticizing, and sanitizing our excursion in Vietnam. And, as always, we virtually ignore the three to four million Vietnamese we killed, as well as the tens of thousands we maimed. LATE THOUGHTS ON AN OLD WAR is a valuable corrective. It is one of the more important, and one of the more honest, books I know of in the endeavor to make sense of the biggest event in the lives of my generation of Americans.

clearest vision of The Nam

Philip Beidler deserves his reputation as a student, teacher and craftsman of his language. Philip Beidler was once a young combat commander in Vietnam. His gritty reflections, from the ground, of our generation's experience there, are, to me, the truest voice and clearest vision of that time and place. If you were there, Beidler rings true. If you love history, he rings true. If you love well written advocates of social justice, Beidler rings true. I was there and, like the author, continue to chew on what I witnessed and what it still means. I graduated from Cal in History in 1964. I just retired from teaching history, with a focus on social justice, to high school juniors and seniors. If I updated my bibliography for ANY reader interested in understanding this country's war through the experiences of its young participants AND the lessons of exporting war that this nation still hasn't learned, Beidler would be very near the top. Don't mean to oversell "Late Thoughts on an Old War" but Beidler hooked me with his chapter-long critique of the movie, "Platoon", compared with its genre.

In Almost Free, Eva Sheppard Wolf uses the story of Samuel Johnson, a free black man from Virginia attempting to free his family, to add detail and depth to our understanding of the lives of free blacks in the South.

There were several paths to freedom for slaves, each of them difficult. After ten years of elaborate dealings and negotiations, Johnson earned manumission in August 1812. An illiterate “mulatto” who had worked at the tavern in Warrenton as a slave, Johnson as a freeman was an anomaly, since free blacks made up only 3 percent of Virginia’s population. Johnson stayed in Fauquier County and managed to buy his enslaved family, but the law of the time required that they leave Virginia if Johnson freed them. Johnson opted to stay. Because slaves’ marriages had no legal standing, Johnson was not legally married to his enslaved wife, and in the event of his death his family would be sold to new owners. Johnson’s story dramatically illustrates the many harsh realities and cruel ironies faced by blacks in a society hostile to their freedom.

Wolf argues that despite the many obstacles Johnson and others faced, race relations were more flexible during the early American republic than is commonly believed. It could actually be easier for a free black man to earn the favor of elite whites than it would be for blacks in general in the post-Reconstruction South. Wolf demonstrates the ways in which race was constructed by individuals in their day-to-day interactions, arguing that racial status was not simply a legal fact but a fluid and changeable condition. Almost Free looks beyond the majority experience, focusing on those at society’s edges to gain a deeper understanding of the meaning of freedom in the slaveholding South.

Almost Free

Almost Free is of special interest to me because I grew up in Fauquier County and attended segregated schools there, including high school in Warrenton, Virginia. I've seen some familiar family names in the book and wonder if I might know descendants of some of those mentioned. I am so glad that Ms Eva Sheppard Wolf had the patience to see this work through to publication and highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in any aspect of slavery.

The first section of the book presents a history of wild pigs in this country-their origins; when, where, and by whom they were first introduced; and their subsequent dispersal.

John J. Mayer and I. Lehr Brisbin, Jr. then develop specific criteria, based on taxonomic principles, for differentiating between the wild pig types. Employing numerous illustrations, graphs, and tables, they analyze and compare morphometric and discrete characters of the skull, external body dimensions and proportions, coat colorations patterns, and hair structure and form.

A report on the status of wild pig populations in the United States (as of 1991) completes the volume. To profile the present ranges, habitats, and morphotypic makeups of wild pigs, the authors conducted two national surveys―in 1981 and 1988―among private individuals and federal and state personnel. Their report is also based on other recent wild pig studies and additional information from survey respondents. The book's reference section is particularly valuable, for its lists all sources consulted as well as the names and addresses of authorities the authors interviewed or with whom they corresponded.

Wild Pigs in the US is not quite up to speed.

I ordered this book because I needed information on just what the title suggests; history, comparative morphology, and current status of wild pigs in the United States. I am a professional research scientist who conducts fieldwork so I needed to know where I might expect to run into wild pigs. The history and comparative morphology sections are well written and seem relatively inclusive. These sections represent good quality academic research put forth in a readable format. Lots of useful information.

The section on current status is sorely lacking however. The data is based in the 1970s-80s as the book has a 1991 copyright date. Even for this time frame it seems to me that the data used was way out of date. Too many personal communications about the extent of wild pig populations and not enough actual cited works. Surely there were sources from natural resource departments to conservation societies/groups who could have provided more current information. As an example, there is a one sentence statement about Missouri indicating that "the state of Missouri has no unfenced populations of wild pigs at this time" (p.218). Again, from a personal communication source. The Missouri Department of Conservation acknowledges that there have been free-roaming wild pig populations throughout the state for many decades and that they have always been in the southern portion of the state (Ozarks) since the days of the open range (early 1800s). I know wild pig populations have literally exploded over the past 20 years but I was greatly dissappointed in this section of the book. The rest of the current status portion is likely the same as it depends way too much on personal communications and way too little on actual data sources. Dissappointing! Of course, if you only want the two-thirds of the book that speaks to history and comparative morphology then you should be happy.

An Exceptional Study

I am currently writing about the Eurasian wild boar in culture, cuisine, and art and purchased Mayer and Brisbin's Wild Pigs in the United States to understand more about the feral pigs that I had been seeing and reading about in Texas and California. In my extensive reading, I have not come across a more authoritative, concise, or better documented book on how the wild boar and swine were introduced in the United States and how they have proliferated through individual states. The book gives a highly technical breakdown of the morphology, distinguishing features, and distribution of domestic swine, feral pigs, and Eurasian wild boar and their hybrids. Mayer and Brisbin have provided a remarkable reference for wildlife managers, agricultural school classrooms, hunters, and anyone fascinated with the in-depth world of wildlife. I'm grateful for this much needed study.

Great history section and a very technical book

This is a great book that definitely details the history of wild swine in the US. I am new to hunting them and wanted to learn all I could. Very interesting. One should note, however, that this is a very technical book and reads like a college level biology book. This is fine with me but those who do not desire that level of charts, research and field study notes should probably look at something else.
The reason I gave 3 stars is that the book and the data is 25 years old and much has happened since the publishing. I did not realize this when I got it. I think the book should be priced lower for this reason.

Both cultures have long been haunted by separate histories of loss and nostalgia, Taylor contends, and the moments when those experiences converge in explicit and startling ways have yet to be investigated by scholars. These convergences often bear the scars of protracted colonial antagonism, appropriation, and segregation, and they share preoccupations with land, sovereignty, tradition, dispossession, subjugation, purity, and violence.

Taylor poses difficult questions in this work. In the aftermath of Removal and colonial devastation, what remains―for Native and non-Native southerners―to be recovered? Is it acceptable to identify an Indian “lost cause”? Is a deep sense of hybridity and intercultural affiliation the only coherent way forward, both for the New South and for its oldest inhabitants? And in these newly entangled, postcolonial environments, has global capitalism emerged as the new enemy for the twenty-first century? Reconstructing the Native South is a compellingly original work that contributes to conversations in Native American, southern, and transnational American studies.
