Brothers in Clay: The Story of Georgia Folk Pottery (Brown Thrasher Books Ser.), by John Burrison

Abundantly illustrated, Brothers in Clay tells the story of Georgia's rich folk pottery tradition―the historical forces that shaped it and the families and individual artisans who continue to keep it alive. This pioneering book marked the first intensive study of a southern state's pottery heritage and the first major examination of a native Georgia art form. Drawing on interviews with practicing potters, John A. Burrison ranges widely in his coverage, providing discussions of the folk potters' contributions to Georgia life and their place in southern society; detailed explanations of turning, glazing, and firing processes; and histories of the state's eight major pottery-producing centers, including genealogies of the potting families and the distinctive characteristics of their wares.

Burrison's new preface summarizes the past decade of southern folk pottery, including archaeological discoveries, museum exhibits, the appearance of important new books, and the deaths of such iconic figures as Lanier Meaders.

A must have book for southeaster potters
By skylark
Brothers in Clay is honestly so well written and so comprehensive .... it should be on every potter's shelf particularly if you are interested in older pottery or face jugs .... or even as a historical reference.... Living in the Pottery trails of North Ga.... I found this to be an easy read and very engaging..... I feel like I know more about my art and far more about the history of this magical area.

Surprise, surprise!
By Joan T.
Bought the book since my great grandfather and his brothers operated a pottery factory along the Chattahoochee River in Georgia before the Civil War and I have a pottery shard found at the site. Just wanted to know more about Georgia folk pottery and guess what! Great grandfather was mentioned by name. What a delight!

Issues and Trends in Contemporary African Politics: Stability, Development, and Democratization (Society and Politics in Africa)From Bra

Africa, at the close of the twentieth century, has witnessed a tremendous amount of social, economic, and political transformation. By tackling the issues of political instability, democratization, and economic development, this book goes to the heart of the African conundrum and makes an invaluable contribution to Africa's development. Written by Africans, it offers a much needed «African perspective» that is often lacking in most development literature. African authors are not so encumbered by «political correctness» or «racial sensitivity» and can write more candidly on events as they see them. The book constitutes a long-awaited break with orthodoxy and makes a pioneering effort to tackle issues traditionally spurned by experts because of their rigid separation of economic development and politics. The writers offer constructive solutions to Africa's problems – solutions which only Africans would dare to suggest.

Review
"« This is a collection of incisive and self-critical essays on the problems and promises of African political and economic development. The authors are not outside experts on African development, they are African nationals and their writings reflect the searching introspection and nuanced richness that only insiders can develop. While not overlooking the pernicious impact of imperialism and other external forces on African development, the authors focus primarily on internal factors that impede the continent's development, and in the process they prepare the ground for more useful discussions of strategies for African self-development.

-George Akeya Agbango has given us a marvelous collection of essays on the trends and developments in contemporary Africa. This is a wonderful book and anyone wanting to know about the nature of the African political and social scene must read this book. Each essay is well-outlined, organized and full of important information. A job well done!- (Molefi Kete Asante, Temple University)

War upon the Land: Military Strategy and the Transformation of Southern Landscapes during the American Civil War (Environmental History and

In this first book-length environmental history of the American Civil War, Lisa M. Brady argues that ideas about nature and the environment were central to the development and success of Union military strategy.

From the start of the war, both sides had to contend with forces of nature, even as they battled one another. Northern soldiers encountered unfamiliar landscapes in the South that suggested, to them, an uncivilized society’s failure to control nature. Under the leadership of Ulysses S. Grant, William Tecumseh Sherman, and Philip Sheridan, the Union army increasingly targeted southern environments as the war dragged on. Whether digging canals, shooting livestock, or dramatically attempting to divert the Mississippi River, the Union aimed to assert mastery over nature by attacking the most potent aspect of southern identity and power―agriculture. Brady focuses on the siege of Vicksburg, the 1864 Shenandoah Valley campaign, marches through Georgia and the Carolinas, and events along the Mississippi River to examine this strategy and its devastating physical and psychological impact.

Before the war, many Americans believed in the idea that nature must be conquered and subdued. Brady shows how this perception changed during the war, leading to a wider acceptance of wilderness. Connecting environmental trauma with the onset of American preservation, Brady pays particular attention to how these new ideas of wilderness can be seen in the creation of national battlefield memorial parks as unaltered spaces. Deftly combining environmental and military history with cultural studies, War upon the Land elucidates an intriguing, largely unexplored side of the nation’s greatest conflict.

Review

Sophisticated, nuanced, and convincing, this book makes a substantial contribution to environmental history and to our understanding of the Civil War.

(Mark Fiege author of Irrigated Eden: The Making of an Agricultural Landscape in the American West)

Clearly written, fascinating in its details, and convincing in its arguments, Brady’s book provides the first in-depth environmental analysis of Grant’s, Sheridan’s, and Sherman’s campaigns in the South. The Civil War will never seem quite the same again.

(J. R. McNeill author of Mosquito Empires: Ecology and War in the Greater Caribbean, 1640–1914)

Shattered trees and ravaged fields are among the most familiar images of the Civil War, but only recently have historians begun to explore the significance of this assault―often quite deliberate―upon the American landscape. War Upon the Land is the latest and best study of this unexpected but critically important subject. Original in its approach, fascinating in its insights, thorough in its research, and marvelously written, it will be a standard work on the subject for years to come. Highly recommended.

(Mark Grimsley author of The Hard Hand of War: Union Military Policy Toward Southern Civilians, 1861-1865)

Brady’s richly researched, subtle, award-deserving book views the Civil War ecohistorically. . . . An excellent first book from a promising scholar.

(D. Steeples Choice)

Brady’s fine book, which launches readers into the Mississippi River campaign rather than one on the Atlantic or Gulf, looks at the role nature played in the Civil War. . . .no one [else] has offered a comprehensive examination of the subject. . . . she keeps her book to a length ideally suitable for the classroom. War upon the Land is worth considering for assignment in courses on the Civil War and on environmental history.

(Jack E. Davis Civil War Monitor)

Dr. Brady’s pioneering work shows that many new insights into the Civil War can be gained by employing a combination of new disciplines to examine long accepted facts. The trail she and other young historians are blazing should be followed by many others.

(Gordon Berg)

War Upon the Land breaks ground as the first book-length environmental history of the American Civil War. . . . Notes, a bibliography, and an index round out this thoughtful, scholarly, and heavily researched analysis . . . highly recommended especially for public and college library Civil War shelves.

(Midwest Book Review)

A work that will prove a rewarding read for those interested in operations and the strategy of the Civil War.

A unique look at the American Civil War
By T. Guill
War Upon the Land is a unique and highly engaging examination of the American Civil War through the lens of environmental history. Brady is able to clearly demonstrate a very fascinating aspect of this conflict, and the societies the fought it, by exploring how each side viewed their natural surroundings. By using a wide range of sources Brady artfully engages the reader to take into account the physical environment in which the war was fought in a manner that is both clear and powerful.
I would highly suggest War Upon the Land to anyone interested in military, or environmental history.

An examination of the impact of war on nature, using case studies from the Civil War.
By lyndonbrecht
I just reread this book after reading it several years ago. Environmental history is a major interest of mine, and looking at the Civil War through an environmental lens, as Brady puts it, is interesting. War and the environment is an emerging subfield. I think I better understand her point after the reread. Brady sees nature as an important historical agent, an agent without intent or consciousness but still an agent. This is an arguable point. Having "agency" usually means both intent and conscious use of whatever power the agent has to affect something. Brady makes a case for it, not entirely convincing, but interesting. Nature is not static, and this may affect military operations. This would mean rising and falling waters, weather, temperatures, mud, and such, things that change.

Brady also posits the landscape is a mix of nature and human activity. It seems to be this rather than nature as a whole that she's looking at. She uses the term "agroecosystem" and certainly the North made war on the Southern landscape, notably in Sherman's marches through Georgia and the Carolinas. Structures were burned, crops destroyed, domestic animals killed or carried off, the infrastructure damaged as much as possible. Brady looks at Grant's Vicksburg campaign, in two chapters, Sherman's march, and then Sheridan's campaign in the Shenandoah as case studies.

Fitzgerald: Geography of a Revolution (Geographies of Justice and Social Transformation Ser.), by William Bunge

This on-the-ground study of one square mile in Detroit was written in collaboration with neighborhood residents, many of whom were involved with the famous Detroit Geographical Expedition and Institute. Fitzgerald, at its core, is dedicated to understanding global phenomena through the intensive study of a small, local place.

Beginning with an 1816 encounter between the Ojibwa population and the neighborhood’s first surveyor, William Bunge examines the racialized imposition of local landscapes over the course of European American settlement. Historical events are firmly situated in space―a task Bunge accomplishes through liberal use of maps and frequent references to recognizable twentieth-century landmarks.

More than a work of historical geography, Fitzgerald is a political intervention. By 1967 the neighborhood was mostly African American; Black Power was ascendant; and Detroit would experience a major riot. Immersed in the daily life of the area, Bunge encouraged residents to tell their stories and to think about local politics in spatial terms. His desire to undertake a different sort of geography led him to create a work that was nothing like a typical work of social science. The jumble of text, maps, and images makes it a particularly urgent book―a major theoretical contribution to urban geography that is also a startling evocation of street-level Detroit during a turbulent era.

Review

The reissuing of this classic text in urban geography will excite old students and new. Bunge and his teams soldiered on to overcome countless challenges: social norms, racialized political divides, recalcitrant institutions, and a violent state. More than thirty years after its initial publication, and with the addition of an insightful introductory essay, Fitzgerald will continue to influence geographers. We must not lose sight of the conviction and hope of radical possibilities in American cities set forth by Bunge and his geographical expeditions.

(Alison Mountz author of Seeking Asylum: Human Smuggling and Bureaucracy at the Border)

There’s nobody like Bill Bunge and there’ll never be anyone like him again. Fitzgerald is another way of telling a story about city life, about its horrors and threats, its joys and possibilities. Our cities continue to crumble, disintegrate financially and socially; yet geographers fret about tenure reviews and research evaluations. How can we not feel shame reading Bunge’s great book today? He’s our conscience, he gnaws away inside us, always forcing us to consider who we are as scholars and what we should do to save life on planet urban.

(Andy Merrifield author of Henri Lefebvre: A Critical Introduction)

About the Author

William Bunge lived in the Fitzgerald neighborhood and taught geography at Wayne State University while writing this book. In 1970 the House Un-American Activities Committee included Bunge s name on a list of sixty-five radical speakers. Blacklisted and unable to find academic work, he fled to Canada, where he taught at several universities and (like the founder of critical geography, Henri Lefebvre) drove a cab. He is the author of three other books."

Review

A lean and pleasingly consumable book . . . Harry Crews led a big, strange, sad and somehow very American life. It is well told here.

(Dwight Garner New York Times)

Does real justice to a complicated, outsized literary figure . . . Trying to separate the conjoined twins of Harry Crews, the shit-kicking, vodka-swilling legend, and Harry Crews, the person, is a delicate, messy operation. Blood, Bone, and Marrow manages to do it without either dying on the table. (Margaret Eby New Republic)

Geltner brilliantly renders the life of the late writer Harry Crews (1935-2012) in this well-researched and vivid biography. It captures the wild spirit of an unflinching American writer. . . (Publishers Weekly (starred review))

Harry Crews was a uniquely gifted and haunted storyteller. Novelist, journalist, memoirist―he made each form his own in a way no one else had before or since. The pages that follow in this absorbing biography detail this and reach into the guts of the experiences that formed him and gave him a voice that was sad, brutal, and funny. Harry said that when it came to writing the truth about himself―or anything for that matter―he was not as interested in facts as he was in memory and belief. (Michael Connelly, from the foreword)

An absorbing but sad chronicle of a tormented writer. (Kirkus Reviews)

In Blood, Bone, and Marrow Ted Geltner gives us a fast-paced narrative of the crazy, violent, tragic, and memorable life of Harry Crews. Geltner knew Crews and produces a book worthy of its subject. This is an excellent first-wave biography that will be a joy to all Harry Crews fans and will be an invaluable resource for scholars and enthusiasts alike. (Taylor Hagood author of Faulkner, Writer of Disability)

With the power of a spellbinding storyteller, Geltner splendidly captures Crews' blood, bone and marrow by leading us on a journey through all we need of Crews' hell, recognizing that without passing through this hellacious suffering, we can never truly understand him. Geltner's biography compels us to seek out Crews' novels to read, or re-read, and to discover the voices of a South just off the interstates and at the edges of its glittering urban centers. (BookPage)

Geltner maintains a warm relationship with his subject, allowing Crews’ irreverent, raunchy, no-holds-barred personality to swagger forth in delightfully uncensored remarks and observations, many of them unprintable. We see the faces of the demons that compelled him through Geltner’s careful anatomy of their origins: the poisonous beginnings, the death of Crews’ first son by drowning, and the lifelong, 'relentless feelings of inferiority' that no success could check. (Gina Webb Atlanta Journal-Constitution)

Blood, Bone and Marrow offers a compelling, often funny and frequently sad account of a deeply flawed and yet profoundly influential American writer. Harry Crews toiled his whole life against the cards life had dealt him and he went to his grave without knowing the answer to one of the most fundamental of life’s questions: Who is my daddy? What blood runs through these veins? . . . The epigraph of the book’s final chapter is a quote from Crews himself: 'The big oaks have to fall down so the little oaks can grow up. And now it’s my turn to go down.' Harry Crews was a big oak, one of the biggest, and in my mind he’ll never go down. (Guy Salvidge Wrapped Up In Books)

If you are just discovering Harry Crews, this is a good place to start. I have been a dogged follower for 40 years so I did not find a lot of new material nor insight here. I would have liked a more in depth exploration of each book and how Harry came up with the ideas. owever, you'll get your information in context and within the timeline of his life.
The book is well written and easy to read. The author obviously has some affection for Harry.
I recommend the book to anyone who doesn't already know a great deal about Crews.

I first met Harry in 1968 ... my girlfriend said I had to meet this man and his teaching. I stayed, though not registered. I will always remember his teaching on The Painted Bird. Soon, I was in the creative writing program under his and Smith Kirkpatrick's excellent tutelage. This book brought back so many memories.

Slavery, Childhood, and Abolition in Jamaica, 1788-1838 (Early American Places Ser.), by Colleen Vasconcellos

This study examines childhood and slavery in Jamaica from the onset of improved conditions for the island’s slaves to the end of all forced or coerced labor throughout the British Caribbean. As Colleen A. Vasconcellos discusses the nature of child development in the plantation complex, she looks at how both colonial Jamaican society and the slave community conceived childhood―and how those ideas changed as the abolitionist movement gained power, the fortunes of planters rose and fell, and the nature of work on Jamaica’s estates evolved from slavery to apprenticeship to free labor. Vasconcellos explores the experiences of enslaved children through the lenses of family, resistance, race, status, culture, education, and freedom. In the half-century covered by her study, Jamaican planters alternately saw enslaved children as burdens or investments. At the same time, the childhood experience was shaped by the ethnically, linguistically, and culturally diverse slave community.

Vasconcellos adds detail and meaning to these tensions by looking, for instance, at enslaved children of color, legally termed mulattos, who had unique ties to both slave and planter families. In addition, she shows how traditions, beliefs, and practices within the slave community undermined planters’ efforts to ensure a compliant workforce by instilling Christian values in enslaved children. These are just a few of the ways that Vasconcellos reveals an overlooked childhood―one that was often defined by Jamaican planters but always contested and redefined by the slaves themselves.

Review
Colleen Vasconcellos’s exploration of the shifting experiences of enslaved children, the most vulnerable section of the plantation population, manages to illuminate ways that successive 'reforms' impacted their lives. She offers a plantation-level perspective on the changing repercussions for individual enslaved households of the successive reform efforts, running from the first questioning of slavery in the mid-eighteenth century, through efforts to legislate reforms via individual colonial legislatures, to the colonial repercussions of the ending of the transatlantic trade in enslaved Africans, and then on to the transition from emancipation to “Full Free." (James Robertson, department of history and archaeology, The University of West Indies, Mona)

Slavery, Childhood, and Abolition in Jamaica adds considerably to our understanding of how amelioration altered the actions of slave owners in fundamental ways. Vasconcellos has a number of fresh ideas on the significance of childhood as a political and, to an extent, a social issue in the transition from slavery to freedom in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Jamaica. (Trevor Burnard author of Creole Gentlemen: The Maryland Elite, 1691-1776)

Well researched and elegantly written, Colleen Vasconcellos’s Slavery, Childhood and Abolition in Jamaica broadens Atlantic discussions of childhood by providing insights into the political, socioeconomic, and cultural factors that shaped enslaved children in the British Caribbean. (Shani Roper Journal of the History of Childhood and Youth)

About the Author
COLLEEN A. VASCONCELLOS is an associate professor of history at the University of West Georgia. She is coeditor, with Jennifer Hillman Helgren, of Girlhood: A Global History.

Tracing the Essay: Through Experience to Truth, by G. Atkins

The essay, as a notably hard form of writing to pin down, has inspired some unflattering descriptions: It is a “greased pig,” for example, or a “pair of baggy pants into which nearly anything and everything can fit.” In Tracing the Essay, G. Douglas Atkins embraces the very qualities that have moved others to accord the essay second-class citizenship in the world of letters.

Drawing from the work of Montaigne and Bacon and recent practitioners such as E. B. White and Cynthia Ozick, Atkins shows what the essay means―and how it comes to mean. The essay, related to assaying (attempting), mines experience for meaning, which it then carefully weighs. It is a via media creature, says Atkins, born of and embracing tension. It exists in places between experience and meaning, literature and philosophy, self and other, process and product, form and formlessness. Moreover, as a literary form the essay is inseparable from a way of life requiring wisdom, modesty, and honesty. “The essay was, historically,” notes Atkins, “the first form to take the experience of the individual and make it the stuff of literature.”

Atkins also considers the essay’s basis in Renaissance (and Reformation) thinking and its participation in voyages of exploration and discovery of that age. Its concern is “home-cosmography,” to use a term from seventeenth-century writer William Habington. Responding to influential critiques of the essay’s supposed self-indulgence, lack of irony, and absence of form, Atkins argues that the essay exhibits a certain “sneakiness” as it proceeds in, through, and by means of the small and the mundane toward the spiritual and the revelatory.

Review

It is Atkins's own passion for the essay form that is most apparent in Tracing the Essay. The breadth of his knowledge of the history and criticism of this genre is also almost staggering. It would seem that he has read and studied almost everything that touches upon his subject matter. Atkins makes a strong case for the importance of the essay, for its role in providing reflection on experience, and for its nature as an embodiment of the speaker.

(Lynn Worsham coeditor of Critical Intellectuals on Writing)

Tracing the Essay offers an original, economical, useful, and lucid argument about the nature and range of the essay as an art form. I welcome Atkins's book for its larger view, for its provision of a context in literary and intellectual history, for its close readings of individual essays, and for its clear articulation of a paradigm for the essay.

(Scott Russell Sanders author of The Force of Spirit)

Tracing the Essay is a heartfelt and continuously intelligent tribute to the genre that sprang from Montaigne as Athene from the head of Zeus and which has had a recent renaissance. In his own quite remarkably nuanced way, Atkins tracks some of the essay's major practitioners, and brings us the best that has been thought and written about the genre. He illuminates usefully its tension between expressing strong personal convictions and remaining studiously open and exploratory. A sustained essay on the essay, this 'tracing,' while generous in its historical information, avoids becoming a text book and contains quite a few surprises. Atkins not only honors many contemporary writers, including E.B. White and Cynthia Ozick, but suggests that poetry too can become a close relative of the essay, as often in Dryden and Pope. A thoroughly enjoyable, judicious treatment of a mode of writing practiced by some of the greatest literary critics and that could influence the style in which scholarship is conducted.

(Geoffrey Hartman Sterling Professor Emeritus, Yale University)

The brevity of Tracing the Essay belies Atkins’s ambition. Rather than writing an extended history of the genre or a meticulous survey of its practitioners, he has tried to penetrate deeply, seeking the form’s essence . . . one should come away with a new appreciation for the art of the essay and what is required to practice that art well.

(CEA Forum)

Tracing the Essay is, at its best, gracefully inscribed and thoughtful, essayistic prose . . . a rich assaying of the many aspects of the essay . . . An excellent book . . . the sum of its parts, from cover to cover, provides a reader with no better book about the form.

(Bloomsbury Review)

I’ll recommend it . . . as evidence that academic lit-crit can sometimes be of interest to people not engaged in writing academic lit-crit. Tracing the Essay is something rare: a book that is learned but plain-spoken, very personal yet also discreet.

(Inside Higher Education)

Surprises lurk here for Floridians. Everybody else should still read it. This is cool stuff.
By lyndonbrecht
This is another in a series from the University of Georgia Press. All are wonderfully done, quality materials and excellent printing of the photographs, which are excellent, some superb. This is the book on the subject/ The subject, alas, probably interests few people other than a common interest in alligators. This is an easy read, in the sense it is accessible, including the biology, species accounts and general comments, but still chock full on information.

There are some surprises, mostly for Floridians. The Argentine Giant Tegu (gets to four feet) in Hillsborough and Polk counties?? (That's roughly Tampa Bay over toward Orlando). Spectacled caimans in Miami/ Dade?? The Texas Horned Lizard in Florida?

Literary Symbiosis: The Reconfigured Text in Twentieth-Century Writing, by David Cowart

"It is only the unimaginative who ever invents," Oscar Wilde once remarked. "The true artist is known by the use he makes of what he annexes, and he annexes everything." Converying a similar awareness, James Joyce observes in Finnegan's Wake that storytelling is in reality "stolen-telling," that art always involves some sort of "theft" or borrowing.

Usually literary borrowings are so integrated into the new work as to be disguised; however, according to David Cowart, recent decades have seen an increasing number of texts that attach themselves to their sources in seemingly parasitic―but, more accurately, symbiotic―dependence. It is this kind of mutuality that Cowart examines in his wide-ranging and richly provocative study Literary Symbiosis. Cowart considers, for instance, what happens when Tom Stoppard, in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, rewrites Hamlet from the point of view of its two most insignificant characters, or when Jean Rhys, in Wide Sargasso Sea, imagines the early life of Bertha Rochester, the mad-woman in the attic in Jane Eyre.

In such works of literary symbiosis, Cowart notes, intertextuality surrenders its usual veil of near invisibility to become concrete and explicit―a phenomenon that Cowart sees as part of the postmodern tendency toward self-consciousness and self-reflexivity. He recognizes that literary symbiosis has some close cousins and so limits his compass to works that are genuine reinterpretations, writings that cast a new light on earlier works through "some tangible measure of formal or thematic evolution, whether on the part of the guest alone or the host and guest together." Proceeding from this intriguing premise, he offers detailed readings of texts that range from Auden's "The Sea and the Mirror," based on The Tempest, to Valerie Martin's reworking of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde as Mary Reilly, to various fictions based on Robinson Crusoe. He also considers, in Nabokov's Pale Fire, a compelling example of text and parasite-text within a single work.

Drawing on and responding to the ideas of disparate thinkers and critics―among them Freud, Harold Bloom, Jacques Lacan, Jacques Derrida, Hillis Miller, and Henry Louis Gates Jr.―Cowart discusses literary symbiosis as Oedipal drama, as reading and misreading, as deconstruction, as Signifying, and as epistemic dialogue. Although his main examples come from the contemporary period, he refers to works dating as far back as the classical era, works representing a range of genres (drama, fiction, poetry, opera, and film). The study of literary symbiosis, Cowart contends, can reveal much about the dynamics of literary renewal in every age. If all literature redeems the familiar, he suggests, literary symbiosis redeems the familiar in literature itself.

Review

Cowart attempts with admirable success to give shape and definition to particular kinds of intertextuality and then proceeds to examine some instances with insight and originality in several works.

(Modern Fiction Studies)

An excellent look at a central feature of literature. . . . Although Cowart's study focuses on the explicitly symbiotic text, he does so with the intent of showing 'a number of features common to all literature, and thereby to suggest that what at first seems an anomaly is ultimately something at the heart of the matter.'

(Choice)

Literary Symbiosis offers brilliant individual readings in the context of a theoretically expansive structure that has wide-ranging implications. It is an engaging and important book.

(American Studies International)
