The Ringing Ear: Black Poets Lean South (The Cave Canem Poetry Prize Ser.)From University of Georgia Press

The South: to render all that it means to an African American takes someone with acutely tuned senses, someone with a patience, a passion even, for the region's history and contradictions. It takes a poet. In this new anthology, the first of its kind, more than one hundred contemporary black poets laugh at and cry about, pray for and curse, flee and return to―the South.

Voices new to the scene appear in The Ringing Ear alongside some of the leading names in American literature today, including Sonia Sanchez, Yusef Komunyakaa, Harryette Mullen, Nikki Giovanni, Kevin Young, Cornelius Eady, and Al Young. The southern worlds opened up by these poets are echoed in how their poems are grouped, under headings like "Music, Food, and Work: Heeding the Lamentation and Roar of Things Made by Hand," or "Religion and Nature: The Lord Looks Out for Babies and Fools," or "Love, Flesh, and Family: The Hush and Holler Portraits."

"Not all of us on these pages have come to or from the South by the same dirt road," says anthology editor Nikky Finney. "We have not chosen our dark olive words from the same patch of earth. Some have come by way of birth and others have followed street musicians and urban corner preachers, dream and myth, to stand before its pine and iron gates."

Review

The Ringing Ear reminds us that sometimes regionalism does not mean provincialism or myopia, but instead offers an opportunity for people to find their true songs and sing them with the assurance and power of knowing. There is something strikingly expansive about the range and complexity of the poems collected in this anthology. This is a distinctly southern book, a distinctly black book, a distinctly American book―it is all these things and more.

(Kwame Dawes author of Wisteria: Twilight Poems from the Swamp Country)

The Ringing Ear brings together a wonderfully diverse group of African American poets under the aegis of the now widely known Cave Canem workshops, which have enabled dialogue and opened doors for hundreds of Black poets in the last decade. In this anthology, extraordinary emerging poets join honored ones like Yusef Komunyakaa, Sonia Sanchez, Harryette Mullen, Cornelius Eady, and those whose names―Thomas Sayers Ellis, Natasha Trethewey, Kevin Young―are becoming indelible. Their focus is the "magnetic South," vexed and compelling as it is in the Black American imagination. Narrative, lyric, surreal, or hyper-real, using meter, multiple voices, verbal deconstruction, informed by jazz, blues, cutting-edge pop, string quartets, and schoolyard rhymes, by history learned in books and told in kitchens, this book pieces a mosaic of American life and of the poem's possibilities.

(Marilyn Hacker author of Desesperanto: Poems 1999&ndash2002)

There is little question Cave Canem is transforming contemporary American poetry . . . Finney's care and sophistication give shape to this wonderful showcase of new talent . . . The Ringing Ear negotiates traditional southern themes such as food, religion, land, labor, and family, and challenges the reader to question how issues of love and sexuality complicate assumptions about race and the South . . . What is most striking about The Ringing Ear is the degree of intimacy in each poem . . . This is a wonderful resource for teaching the craft of poetry and an exciting example of contemporary Southern literature. With The Ringing Ear, Nikky Finney introduces herself as a talented editor, and Cave Canem solidifies its position as a powerhouse in American poetry.

(American Book Review)

By writing about a region with its rich history and racial contradictions, these poets advance the impact of their poetry beyond historical and cultural boundaries. This is a timely, vital collection that insists the uses of poetry must be redefined and examined through the work of some of our best poets.

(Bloomsbury Review)

The Ringing Ear is an intergenerational sampling that is arranged thematically. The effect is that of eavesdropping on a thoughtful, candid, provocative conversation among the poets in each section.

(San Antonio Current)

Offers a consistently strong showcase of Black voices and a compelling and accessible organization, and should persist as an important articulation of the Black experience of the American South . . . wondrous diversity of form subject, of perspective . . . the genius of the book and of Cave Canem's importance is obvious . . . The Ringing Ear is such an heirloom―Cave Canem's gift from the chorus of voices pushing the boundaries and barriers to the diverse and expanding tradition of American poetry.

(Rain Taxi)

This poetry anthology is riveting, perfectly imagined for classroom use as well as for readers who want to stay in touch with the work of young writers. Even better than individual poems―and they are very good indeed―are the ingenious, even brilliant conversations among them that editor Nikky Finney arranges. Everywhere the poems reinforce, argue with, amplify, challenge, and deepen each other. This kind of subtext editing is a gift. We need this book.

(Hilda Raz Prairie Schooner)

There are tons of literary anthologies inspired in one way or another by the Southern states. But to say that an anthology of poems about the South by African American writers is overdue would be an understatement. . . . The Ringing Ear . . . redresses the imbalance, collecting poems by Sonia Sanchez, Cornelius Eady, Nikki Giovanni, Nathaniel Mackey, and more.

(Guardian)

Good Ears
By Diann
"The Ringing Ear: Black Poets Lean South," a compulsively rich anthology edited by Nikky Finney, raises many of the usual arguments about identity politics and aesthetic quality. But another, and more personally interesting, comes from a different quarter: Why is this anthology so much better than any Southern-based collection edited by a white writer in recent years? After all, these have contained African-American writers (and even women).

But they have not been nearly as representative of the old and the young; the native-born Southerners and the emigres, even the visitors; the formalists and the writers of free verse, not to mention Ebonics and spoken word poets. Forrest Hamer, from whose work the book's title is taken, is one of the better-known newcomers; others to watch are Honoree Fanonne Jeffers, Sharan Strange, Thomas Sayers Ellis, Hermine Pinson, Earl Braggs, Harryette Mullen, and Kendra Hamilton, to name only a few.

There are moments in Finney's anthology when readers might well feel that quality has been sacrificed for inclusiveness. Preferring gumbo to poached okra when it comes to such matters, I licked the bowl clean.

Thank you, everything's satisfactory! Being too far, international postal cost is too high for me. Still, I am happy to have it in good condition.

The Darien Journal of John Girardeau Legare, Ricegrower, by Buddy Sullivan

In 1877, John Girardeau Legare of Adams Run, South Carolina, arrived in Darien on the Georgia tidewater. Legare managed Darien-area rice plantations, first at Generals Island, then at Champneys. Nearby was Butler’s Island, made famous by Fanny Kemble Butler in her antebellum Journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation. Legare also served as the clerk of the city of Darien during the first three decades of the twentieth century, maintaining detailed records of public business and documenting local commercial and civic affairs.

Almost to the day of his death in 1932, Legare kept a journal containing his observations and commentary on the development of Darien as a center for timber exports and the gradual decline of the rice industry. South Carolina and Georgia led the world in rice production in the mid-nineteenth century, and Legare’s detailed accounts of planting and management provide one of the outstanding contemporary sources for what was becoming a vanishing way of life in tidewater Georgia.

Legare’s journals are a microcosmic history of Darien and its environs during a time that was perhaps the most compelling in the town’s history. The industrial development of Darien in the postbellum era was the essence of Henry Grady’s vision of the progressive New South, a factor not lost on Legare. He reflects on the difficulties associated with rice planting; Darien’s soaring, then plummeting, fortunes with yellow pine timber; prominent community members; and the development of local railroads. Legare records these developments against the larger backdrop of America, as his journal contains many observations on contemporary national events.

Buddy Sullivan has placed the Journal in context with an introduction and comprehensive endnotes identifying the people and events referred to by Legare. There is also considerable African American history in the volume, as reflected both in Legare’s writings and in the editor’s introduction and supplementary notes.

Review

The editor’s greatest contribution, however, is in the copious notes that identify and elaborate on the subjects of Legare’s comments. These notes, themselves, are an encyclopedia of Darien and McIntosh County history.

(Georgia Historical Quarterly)

Saving the Soul of Georgia: Donald L. Hollowell and the Struggle for Civil Rights (Sarah Mills Hodge Fund Publication), by Maurice Daniels

Donald L. Hollowell was Georgia’s chief civil rights attorney during the 1950s and 1960s. In this role he defended African American men accused or convicted of capital crimes in a racially hostile legal system, represented movement activists arrested for their civil rights work, and fought to undermine the laws that maintained state-sanctioned racial discrimination. In Saving the Soul of Georgia, Maurice C. Daniels tells the story of this behindthe- scenes yet highly influential civil rights lawyer who defended the rights of blacks and advanced the cause of social justice in the United States.

Hollowell grew up in Kansas somewhat insulated from the harsh conditions imposed by Jim Crow laws throughout the South. As a young man he served as a Buffalo Soldier in the legendary Tenth Cavalry, but it wasn’t until after he fought in World War II that he determined to become a civil rights attorney. The war was an eye-opener, as Hollowell experienced the cruel discrimination of racist segregationist policies. The irony of defending freedom abroad for the sake of preserving Jim Crow laws at home steeled his resolve to fight for civil rights upon returning from war.

From his legal work in the case of Hamilton E. Holmes and Charlayne Hunter that desegregated the University of Georgia to his defense of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to his collaboration with Thurgood Marshall and his service as the NAACP’s chief counsel in Georgia, Saving the Soul of Georgia explores the intersections of Hollowell’s work with the larger civil rights movement.

Review

Donald Hollowell―a brilliant and courageous lawyer known as Georgia’s ‘Mr. Civil Rights’―has long deserved a biography to match his talents. In Saving the Soul of Georgia, this lion of the civil rights movement finally receives what he has so richly deserved. Daniels’s book is a magnificent contribution to the literature on the black freedom struggle and the local lawyers who helped sustain it.

(Tomiko Brown-Nagin author of Courage to Dissent: Atlanta and the Long History of the Civil Rights Movement, winner of the Bancroft Prize)

Maurice Daniels’s compelling biography of Donald Hollowell shines light on a pioneer attorney whose work in the trenches was absolutely essential to the civil rights movement. Hollowell was the preferred attorney for the student activists pushing the struggle forward, his contributions ranging from the back roads of Georgia to federal courtrooms, from plotting legal strategy to negotiating and advising. Daniels gives us a wonderful portrait of an important civil rights activist and adds another layer to our understanding of what it took to create a successful movement.

(Emilye Crosby editor of Civil Rights History from the Ground Up: Local Struggles, a National Movement)

Not nearly enough has been written or is widely known about the giants on whose shoulders President Obama is fond of saying he stands. One of those giants is Donald L. Hollowell. Hollowell's shoulders offered more than legal representation. When one of us needed reassurance or bail or defense, he was always there, day or night. Students used to sing, 'King is our leader; Hollowell is our lawyer. And we shall not be moved.' What my generation and the generations to come need to help us keep our eyes on the prize is a book like Saving the Soul of Georgia: Donald L. Hollowell and the Struggle for Civil Rights. It should be required reading for every teacher and student in America, so that they can know that freedom is not free and understand what it takes to bring us closer to a more perfect union.

(Charlayne Hunter-Gault journalist and author of To The Mountaintop: My Journey Through the Civil Rights Movement)

This compelling biography of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People’s chief attorney in Georgia during the 1950s and 1960s delivers on the promise of its title. . . . With his close attention to court proceedings, Daniels penetrates the often-dense tangle of legal procedures. . . . In Daniels's hands, court proceedings come to life with a narrative accessible to lawyers and nonlawyers alike. . . . The inclusion of twenty-seven carefully selected photographs further brings to life one of the best biographies of the civil rights era. (Polly J. Price Journal of American History)

Daniels's book make a point that needs emphasis: that embedded within the grassroots movements that now occupy much scholarly attention were thousands of everyday legal confrontations. . . . A well-researched account that explores much-neglected aspects of the history of the civil rights movement. From the grassroots to the apex of the movement, the author shows how scholars can move beyond the conventional narrative arcs of the freedom struggle, but how difficult it is, in the end, to escape their force. (Kenenth W. Mack American Historical Review)

Dean of the School of Social Work and founder of the Foot Soldier Project for Civil Rights Studies at the University of Georgia, Daniels is well qualified to write about Georgia’s civil rights lawyers. This book will remind teachers and scholars of [Hollowell’s] wider importance to both Georgia history and American legal history. (Sarah H. Brown Journal of Southern History)

A Foot Soldier For Equal Justice
By Eddie Hutchinson
"Saving The Soul of Georgia" does more than just chronicle the achievements of attorney Donald Lee Hollowell, it is a compendium of Hollowell's life's work that, taken en masse, helped to bend the arc of the moral universe towards justice.

While some civil rights demonstrations were in the forefront, overtly displayed domestically and internationally, there was also the legal aspect of confronting Jim Crow and civil rights violations. These standoffs took place in the courtroom; a battleground where this foot soldier thrived:

"While pickets, boycotts, sit-ins, and other forms of direct action played a vital role in civil rights progress, victories were often ultimately won in the courts by Hollowell and his colleagues." (p.184).

Although most remembered for winning the case that allowed Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter to be the first black students to attend the University of Georgia, Hollowell fought many courtroom battles that, individually, were `wins' but collectively they were the momentum builders needed to defeat segregation in the Deep South.

Many of Hollowell's victories and achievements may have gone unnoticed but his legacy of relentless commitment to social justice now lives on thanks to Dr. Maurice Daniels.

Thank goodness for Dr. Daniels. He has captured the essence of a remarkable, "unsung" American hero. The importance of such a book is immeasurable. The documentation of Donald L. Hollowell's life will serve as a historical and inspirational piece for generations to come!

Sea Turtles of the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts of the United States (Wormsloe Foundation Nature Book Ser.), by Carol Ruckdeschel, C. Robert S

Written by two of the Southeast's foremost authorities on sea turtle conservation, this is an accessible, fully illustrated guide to the species that frequent the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts of the United States.

No one who encounters a sea turtle soon forgets it. The leatherback, for instance, can grow to huge proportions, commonly approaching eight feet in length and more than half a ton in weight. Powerful swimmers, they are also among the deepest divers of all air-breathing sea creatures. Despite these assets, the survival of the leatherback, like that of all sea turtle species, is under constant threat from commercial fishing operations, overdevelopment of nesting grounds, pollution, and predation by introduced species.

The guide opens with comprehensive coverage of the sea turtle's evolution, juvenile and adult life cycles, nesting, diet and feeding, disease and parasites, predators, and conservation issues. Each subsequent chapter is dedicated to a particular turtle species: loggerhead, leatherback, Kemp's ridley, green sea turtle, hawksbill, and olive ridley. The account of each species describes distribution, habitats, general appearance, life history and behavior, and conservation. For each species, photographs of hatchlings and adults and a map showing distribution and migration provide further information.

Sea turtles have been swimming the seas for one hundred million years. Yet all of the species in this book―indeed, all sea turtles worldwide―are on U.S. and international endangered lists. Biologists Carol Ruckdeschel and C. Robert Shoop have dedicated their careers to learning about sea turtles-and to ensuring that we understand that we are stakeholders in the fate of these ancient creatures. With this guide in hand, readers will be better equipped to understand sea turtle biology and support sea turtle conservation efforts.

Carol Ruckdeschel and Bob Shoop have produced a compelling guide to sea turtles along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, providing an ideal source of information for amateur naturalists, whether visitors or residents.

(Whit Gibbons Savannah River Ecology Laboratory)

Sea Turtles of the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts is a superb account of the natural history of America's endangered sea turtles. Ruckdeschel and Shoop provide clear and highly readable accounts of these charismatic reptiles; the authors' obvious love for nature is evident in every word.

(C. Kenneth Dodd, Jr. University of Florida)

Sea Turtles of the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts of the United States, by Carol Ruckdeschel and Bob Shoop, will be a new and much valued addition to both my field kit library and office book shelve. It is both extremely thorough and very clearly written and will be useful to folks at all levels of sea turtle involvement or interest. This book is very readable and yet provides a complete course on sea turtle biology and conservation. Bob's very notable background in the academic world as a researcher and university professor and Carol's as an unmatched field biologist and resident barrier island naturalist are well blended in this work. Their vast knowledge and love of sea turtles and our environment comes across very clearly from its pages. Thanks so very much to Bob, in memorial, and Carol, still out on the beach.

Despite the large body of technical literature devoted to sea turtles, there are surprisingly few concise summaries of sea turtle natural history for the general public. Ruckdeschel and Shoop's work provides us with something that has been sorely missing, a well-written comprehensive guide to the biology of sea turtles in the southeastern United States. Particularly interesting are the species accounts that summarize the most recent scientific information on the complex and fascinating life histories of sea turtles. This book is highly recommended as a reference for students, educators, naturalists and anyone interested in sea turtles.

(Mark G. Dodd Georgia Sea Turtle Program Coordinator, Georgia Department of Natural Resources)

Company Towns in the Americas: Landscape, Power, and Working-Class Communities (Geographies of Justice and Social Transformation Ser.)Fr

Company towns were the spatial manifestation of a social ideology and an economic rationale. The contributors to this volume show how national politics, social protest, and local culture transformed those founding ideologies by examining the histories of company towns in six countries: Argentina (Firmat), Brazil (Volta Redonda, Santos, Fordlândia), Canada (Sudbury), Chile (El Salvador), Mexico (Santa Rosa, Río Blanco), and the United States (Anaconda, Kellogg, and Sunflower City).

Company towns across the Americas played similar economic and social roles. They advanced the frontiers of industrial capitalism and became powerful symbols of modernity. They expanded national economies by supporting extractive industries on thinly settled frontiers and, as a result, brought more land, natural resources, and people under the control of corporations. U.S. multinational companies exported ideas about work discipline, race, and gender to Latin America as they established company towns there to extend their economic reach. Employers indeed shaped social relations in these company towns through education, welfare, and leisure programs, but these essays also show how working-class communities reshaped these programs to serve their needs.

The editors’ introduction and a theoretical essay by labor geographer Andrew Herod provide the context for the case studies and illuminate how the company town serves as a window into both the comparative and transnational histories of labor under industrial capitalism.

Review

This work provides a new, cross-disciplinary look at industrialization's impact in the Americas from the late 19th into the 20th century. It also shows that issues of gender, labor, race, and class cut across borders, offering readers and scholars a transnational context for understanding past and future. Summing Up: Highly recommended.

(Choice )

It is not very often that a collection can redefine a whole field; this is one of those times.

(Richard A. Greenwald coeditor of Sweatshop USA: The American Sweatshop in Historical and Global Perspective)

Company Towns in the Americas is a welcome contribution to pan-American industrial history . . . This thought-provoking volume represents a key text on how industrial capitalism and workers shaped and reshaped local landscapes.

(The Americas)

Wonderful and original . . . The contributors’ case studies are exceptionally well done, and the result is a very readable book that should be quite accessible to students.

(Steve Striffler author of Chicken: The Dangerous Transformation of America’s Favorite Food)

By broadening our thinking on company towns, the authors present new opportunities for thinking about the convergence between industrial, military, and state planning. Company Towns in the Americas opens exciting new vistas for those who want to understand company towns as more than an exceptional phenomenon.

(Patrick Vitale Labor History)

The authors here suggest that new forms of communication and transportation have already created an ‘earthquake’ and made the traditional company-owned towns a thing of the past.

(Michael A. Amundson Pacific Historical Review)

We are . . . left with vivid, well-researched portraits of the social relations embedded within a wide variety of company towns across the Americas. The case studies implicitly raise important questions about the ways in which company towns have been made, struggled over, and conceptualized. To those questions, Company Towns in the Americas is an important, if not complete, contribution.

(Robert B. Ross Journal of Historical Geography)

Divine Agitators: The Delta Ministry and Civil Rights in Mississippi, by Mark Newman

The National Council of Churches established the Delta Ministry in 1964 to further the cause of civil rights in Mississippi―the southern state with the largest black population proportionately and with the stiffest level of white resistance. At its height the Ministry, which was headquartered in Greenville, had the largest field staff of any civil rights organization in the South. Active through the mid-1970s, the Ministry outlasted SNCC, CORE, and the SCLC in Mississippi, helping to fill the vacuums when these organizations fell apart or refocused their energies.

In this first book-length study of the Delta Ministry, Mark Newman tells how the organization conducted literacy, citizenship, and vocational training. He documents the Ministry's role in fostering the growth of Head Start and community-based health care and in widening the distribution of free surplus federal food and food stamps.

Newman discusses, among other Ministry successes, the Delta Foundation, which created jobs by channeling grant money to small businesses that could not secure bank loans. At the same time, he details the Ministry's problems from its chronic underfunding to its uneasy relationship with the Mississippi NAACP, which pursued civil rights objectives through less confrontational methods. Newman examines the Freedomcrafts manufacturing cooperative and other ministry failures, as well as mixed efforts such as Freedom City, a collective agricultural and manufacturing community built by displaced agricultural workers.

Divine Agitators looks at many inadequately studied events across a time span that extends beyond the widely accepted end dates of the civil rights movement. It offers new insights, at the most local levels of the movement, into conflict within and between civil rights groups, the increasing subtlety of white resistance, the disengagement of the federal government, and the rise of Black Power.

Review

Divine Agitators fills an important gap in the historiography of the civil rights movement in Mississippi and provides a fascinating view of one of the most controversial organizations in the state. Anyone interested in the civil rights movement, in the history of Mississippi, and in the southern and American religion will profit from Newman's work.

(Randy Sparks author of Religion in Mississippi)

In his meticulously researched study, Newman explains how the Delta Ministry was simultaneously co-architect, product, symbol, and ultimately victim of the African American freedom struggle in Mississippi from the optimistic zenith of activism in the 1960s to the uncertainties and disappointments of the 1970s. As he unravels the complex, often bittersweet tale of the Ministry's relationship to the evolving civil rights and black power struggles, Newman apportions credit for its successes and blame for its failures in a thoroughly judicious and evenhanded manner. Consequently, not only is Divine Agitators an important contribution to our understanding of how religious ideals and practically minded faith-based organizations influenced the Mississippi freedom struggle, but it also represents a sophisticated and respectful corrective to the relentlessly celebratory accounts of the Movement that still dominate civil rights historiography. It is an impressive piece of scholarship.

(Brian Ward author of Just My Soul Responding: Rhythm and Blues, Black Consciousness, and Race Relations)

[A] comprehensive, detailed study of this important organization.

(University Press Book Review)

Exhaustive but approachable . . . This book is significant for several reasons, not the least of which should be its broad appeal. Because of its examination of a faith-based organization, it provides religious scholars and ministers with great insight about how religious denominations and churches could make significant impacts on challenged communities. It should appeal to those who are interested in history, specifically of the South, Mississippi, or the civil rights era, in that it gives detailed insights about post-civil rights leaders and their activities in the South. Students of politics will be interested in the Delta Ministry's community outreach initiative that initially sought to respond directly to the plight of African Americans that had resulted from past discriminatory policies and unfair resource allocations; but it evolved into a major political action committee that organized protest rallies, registered voters, identified and supported candidates for public office, and lobbied policy makers. Lastly, nonprofit theorists and managers, given their focus on identifying and explaining elements of success and failures with the ultimate goal of developing 'best practice' models, would find the book extremely useful.

(Journal of Southern Religion)

Newman’s carefully researched monograph is the first book-length study of this important group.

(Multicultural Review)

[Newman’s] study is the first of a crucial organization that historians have previously neglected or ignored altogether. Yet Divine Agitators does much more than trace the development and detail the achievements of a single civil rights group. In examining the DM’s post-1965 activities, Newman exposes the challenges and restrictions that faced the Mississippi black freedom struggle after federal legislation ended de jure segregation in the decade’s early years. . . . [A]n indispensable contribution to existing civil rights scholarship.

(H-South)

Newman's study of the Delta Ministry is scrupulously researched and skillfully written. In exploring local organizing in the South in the later 1960s, he casts valuable light on areas of the movement currently understudied by historians.

(Journal of American Studies)

A much-needed study of an important civil rights organization.

(Journal of American History)

From the Publisher
The first full-length history of one of the largest and most enduring civil rights organizations in the Mississippi movement.

About the Author
Mark Newman is a reader in history at the University of Edinburgh. He won the Southern Regional Council's Lillian Smith Book Award for "Getting Right with God."

Beyond Walls and Cages: Prisons, Borders, and Global Crisis (Geographies of Justice and Social Transformation Ser.)From University of Ge

The crisis of borders and prisons can be seen starkly in statistics. In 2011 some 1,500 migrants died trying to enter Europe, and the United States deported nearly 400,000 and imprisoned some 2.3 million people―more than at any other time in history. International borders are increasingly militarized places embedded within domestic policing and imprisonment and entwined with expanding prison-industrial complexes. Beyond Walls and Cages offers scholarly and activist perspectives on these issues and explores how the international community can move toward a more humane future.Working at a range of geographic scales and locations, contributors examine concrete and ideological connections among prisons, migration policing and detention, border fortification, and militarization. They challenge the idea that prisons and borders create safety, security, and order, showing that they can be forms of coercive mobility that separate loved ones, disempower communities, and increase shared harms of poverty. Walls and cages can also fortify wealth and power inequalities, racism, and gender and sexual oppression. As governments increasingly rely on criminalization and violent measures of exclusion and containment, strategies for achieving change are essential. Beyond Walls and Cages develops abolitionist, no borders, and decolonial analyses and methods for social change, showing how seemingly disconnected forms of state violence are interconnected. Creating a more just and free world―whether in the Mexico-U.S. borderlands, the Morocco-Spain region, South Africa, Montana, or Philadelphia―requires that people who are most affected become central to building alternatives to global crosscurrents of criminalization and militarization.

Review

Dares to undertake a task of political emergency that is here, now, and deeply historical . . . The thinkers in this collection catalyze a series of debates, conversations, and imaginative possibilities that stretch and vitally distend the existing horizons and languages of abolitionist, human/immigrant rights, prison reform, and U.S. border activisms. A mind-boggling array of critical positions, all informed by on-the-ground political work, is present in these pages. No one will walk away from this book unchanged.

(Dylan Rodríguez author of Forced Passages: Imprisoned Radical Intellectuals and the U.S. Prison Regime)

Bringing together immigrant justice and antiprison organizing, this volume offers an unusual and enlightening mix of writing by scholars, activists, and artists. There is not a lot available on migrant detention, and from what this book tells us it is on the increase, with record numbers of people detained.

(Jennifer Hyndman author of Managing Displacement: Refugees and the Politics of Humanitarianism)

This is an unashamedly partisan book, which nails its colours firmly to the anti-prison and immigrant justice masts – and the success of the collection is all the greater for it. A timely, insightful and diverse collection, it spans an enormous range of issues and perspectives and offers a rich discussion of the connections between prisons, migration policing and detention, border fortification and militarisation.

(Dominique Moran Society and Space)

This is a radical book that strips away any pretense that prisons and policies designed to place as many people as possible in them can be humane. The writers herein issue a clear and thoughtful call to reconsider the entire concept of prisons that US society and its institutions have based their approach to dealing with the poor, non-white, and others with little power in their midst.

(Ron Jacobs Counterpunch)

Beyond Walls and Borders is a resounding ‘must-read’ for any activist, scholar, or those straddling worlds between.

(Ulises Moreno-Tabarez London School of Economics and Political Science Review of Books)

The diversity of voices and perspectives in one of the strengths of [Beyond Walls and Cages], taken collectively the reader is given a complex and multifaceted picture of imprisonment and detention. . . . [it is an] important contribution to the existing critical geographic scholarship on imprisonment and immigrant detention.

(Jill Williams Antipode)
