Dyana Z. Furmansky (writing as Dyan Zaslowsky) is coauthor of "These American Lands: Parks, Wilderness, and the Public Lands." Her articles on nature and the environment have appeared in the "New York Times," "American Heritage," "Audubon," "High Country News," "Sierra," "Wilderness," and many other publications. In 1986 she was part of the team of "High Country News" reporters that won a George Polk Award for Environmental Reporting, for the series Western Water Made Simple. Furmansky lives in Denver."

Rosalie Edge, A Woman Who Can Continue to Inspire Us Today

I just completed my first reading of this inspirational biography of Rosalie Edge(it won't be my last reading), and shall recommend it as essential reading to all of my book lover friends, those concerned with our environment and those committed to advocacy for whatever their cause.
Mrs. Edge (I feel compelled to be formal when referring to her!) was tireless in her pursuit of the best conservation truths recommended by those most expert in their fields. As an independent, she was not obliged to support popularist opinion for political expediency and financial rewards, and cared not one whit for political correctness when taking on powerful entities such as the Audubon Society. Unfortunately, her many,many contributions to the environmental cause were lost to history (and Rachel Carson) until Dyana Z. Furmansky resurrected Mrs. Edge and placed her firmly on the pedestal she so richly deserves.
What a woman! Mrs. Edge found her voice and calling in middle age, and did not stop until old age and death. She quite simply transformed the environmental movement in the USA. She serves as a role model to us today
to learn the advocacy skills she demonstated, and to pursue causes for the good to benefit mankind and worldkind.
Thank you Dyana Z. Furmansky for bringing this woman to view in 2009.

An unforgotten diamond

At last, a book that does Rosalie Edge justice. It shows how heroes are really forged--relentlessly, day by day, doing what appear to be tedious tasks like writing newsletters and attending meetings and stuffing flyers into envelopes and all the material that screams AGAINST writing a book. But this book pulls it off! It shows a great lady in all her social settings; 19th century aristocratic New York; early 20th century Great Nritain (still an Empire then); 20th century pre-revolution Orient; and of course on the two great crusades of her life, women's suffrage and protection of birds of prey. It shows how sheer relentlessness and force of will can triumph and right wrongs all across this nation. One indomitable spirit; one resolute lady. One you all should know.

Rosalie Edge is one of those fascinating historical figures whose puzzling obscurity begs to be rectified. Dyana Furmansky has done just that, with impressively deep research and a writing style that breathes life into the buried story of Rosalie's remarkable personal journey. The chronicle of Rosalie's travels to remote corners of the earth, in a time when few women ventured beyond hearth and home, was our first inkling that our heroine was no shrinking violet. The account of her awakening to the women's movement, on a transAtlantic crossing, reminds us of life's twists and turns. The strength she gained working as a suffragette empowered her to take on a powerful and counterproductive male "conservation" establishment, with dazzling results.
