what Brown has set out to do is grieve loss, his lines move with a
buoyant, marrow-deep music, percussive and rich. They move like ‘a
train, bound to a destination’ and they arrive with ‘the crackle
lightning makes when it hits.'

A beautiful collection

At once heartfelt and thought provoking, I read and re-read this collection several times. There was an almost narrative quality to the collection, as the author wove a takes you first through the experience of fatherhood, which slowly suffuses and alters his understanding of his familial role, from father to husband, to brother to so. By the end, he's woven a rich tapestry of interconnectedness, mapped the sometimes joyful, sometimes painful relationships that bind us to one another. Compelling, beautiful writing.
