Needy is not quite the right description for the characters in Kealey’s strong story collection, winner of the Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction. While they are living on the edge, their powerful sense of self and duty belies their lack of funds, though nothing masks their hardscrabble life. Brother and sister Nate and Merrill appear more than once, working in a grocery store and, later, turning to theft to pay for their father’s medication. Shelby reads the Wright brothers’ diaries while sitting deathwatch for her grandmother. Laika is an assistant camel keeper in the circus. Grady is an assistant groundskeeper for a minor-league ball club. Altar boys Omar and Lewis steal back the stolen boots of a visiting priest. And all display remarkable levels of determination, responsibility, and spine. We see Kealey’s characters mostly in their early years (though a more adult Merrill appears in one story) and can only speculate on what they will be like as adults. Kealey creates both characters and landscapes with a sure hand, making for a memorable collection. --Danise Hoover

Tom Kealey might be my favorite short story writer and this astonishing collection is long overdue.

TOM KEALEY is the author of The Creative Writing MFA Handbook. His stories have appeared in Best American Nonrequired Reading, Glimmer Train, Story Quarterly, Prairie Schooner, and the San Francisco Chronicle. His nonfiction has appeared in Poets and Writers and The Writer. He received his MFA in creative writing from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he received the Distinguished Teaching Award. Tom has taught creative writing at Stanford University since 2003.

A powerful collection from an up-and-coming writer

This collection blew my socks off.
I've read few writers who can pull of quiet intensity like Kealey can. The action of each story is simple--a kid helps his uncle take care of an amateur baseball field, a boy visits his mom who's in prison, two brothers visit the older's girlfriend--but there's so much tension running beneath every moment that these simple actions--cutting hair, swimming in a pond, mowing grass--feel supercharged. Each story is deftly told, and though some of these characters make questionable decisions, they are all treated with empathy.
Simple, powerful, hopeful . . . what can I say? Do yourself a favor and spend the next week reading some first-class stories from a writer who'll be on to the big-time very soon. An easy five out of five for me, and one of the best I've read all year.

Savor this collection!

I read this collection slowly because I wanted to savor it. The scenes in Kealey's stories are so distilled that I spent a lot of time thinking about what must have happened before and after them, and about the possibilities of narrative in general. The whole book had an autumnal feel to me--full of shadows, sudden illuminations, decay, possibilities of death, and huddled pockets of warmth.
"Introduction, or Nobody" sets the September tone immediately, by following a young brother and sister as they wander through a woods and neighborhood, speculating about the lives in the houses around them. The kids are both spooky, and vibrantly alive and familiar. (The boy plays toss and catch with bat, for example, which seems impossible but Kealey is so good that you suspend your disbelief as you read it.) Meanwhile, the tales the boy and girl tell keep adding layers until the whole story is like a giant, glittering leaf pile.
I also loved "Groundskeeping"--it has one of the best endings I've read in a long while. And I nearly jumped out of my seat at one of the plot turns in "Coyotes." Most the collection has appeared in literary magazine titans like Glimmer Train and Indiana Review over the years, but because characters reappear across Kealey's stories, the book feels like more than anthology of his best recent work. It's an overture to youth, imagination, and loss, and it will resonate in my mind for a long time.

Thieves I've Known - Brilliant Short Story Collection

This is a stunning collection. Kealey has the miraculous ability to create a variety of memorable characters while revealing subtle truths about ourselves in the process. I think this is the sign of a great writer. Some of the lives depicted here might be characterized as troubled or difficult, but there is nothing maudlin or sad about the beautiful prose and pitch perfect dialogue he uses to craft these stories. I read a lot of short story collections and this is one of the best I've encountered in a very long time. Impressive, original and unforgettable. Thieves I've Known deserves a wide audience.
