The Viewing Room: Stories (Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction Ser.), by Jacquelin Gorman

In The Viewing Room, two hospital chaplains console the living during the moments when they look upon their beloved dead for one last time in a large urban hospital in Los Angeles. But this room is also a character, linking stories together and bearing witness in chilling testimony of grief and wisdom. Henrietta and Maurice, the chaplains, are ministers who have lost their faith due to devastating personal tragedy. Still, they regain their hold on their own lives through their work, one death at a time.

Jacquelin Gorman lays bare nine parallel worlds of suffering in stories of unflinching detail, vividly told with heart, guts, and compassion. In these pages, the children are both murderers and victims, and the adults fare no better: a teenage father shakes his screaming baby to death; high school surfers kill the homeless for sport as a way of cleaning up their beaches; a Muslim basketball player readies her best friend for burial with a sacred ritual that reveals forbidden love; a scorned ex-wife leaves a message in permanent ink on the body of her betrayer; and a pet therapy dog’s unconditional love for a decaying body memorializes the spirit within.

This moving and unsettling collection of stories shines a piercing light on the dark corners of our modern world, illuminating necessary truths that convey a clearer and, undoubtedly, greater vision of humanity.

From Booklist
Gorman’s nine, hard-hitting linked stories feature two likable hospital chaplains who minister in a Los Angeles hospital. Henrietta is young, new to the job, and assigned to the night shift. Ironically, her faith in God evaporated when her brother died in an accident. Maurice is older, experienced, and has the day shift. Ever since his mother was raped and murdered, he questions the intrinsic goodness of people. This duo’s work is intense, and the suffering they witness is unfathomable. A morbidly obese Pima Indian woman’s body (ravaged by diabetes, kidney failure, and gangrene) is rotting, but her indomitable spirit keeps rising. A 10-year-old girl uses a jump rope to hang herself. A mother who has lost a child pulls a loaded gun out of her purse during a bereavement group meeting and threatens to shoot herself. An emergency baptism is performed on a dying baby whose father shook and threw the infant to quell its crying. Loss, forgiveness, grace, and compassion fatigue are recurrent themes. Perhaps more profoundly than most, these caring chaplains understand “how grief can wear a person down.” --Tony Miksanek

Review

The vivid, powerful, and disturbing stories of The Viewing Room exhibit a deep caring about the preciousness of life and the strength of the bonds that can link us to one another. When love and death are locked in intimate embrace, the only recourse for bystanders is compassion. Brave and honest, these stories whisper to the reader, ‘Take care, take care,’ and, ‘Help one another.’

(Sena Jeter Naslund author of Adam & Eve)

I have never read anything at all like this stark and brilliant book, which examines death, dying, and human love through the perspective of young hospital chaplain Henrietta during her initial year of duty in the ‘viewing room.’ I feel changed and enlarged by these extraordinary characters, their dire situations, and life stories.

(Lee Smith author of Fair and Tender Ladies)

Most insightful look inside the emotions of death since Kubler-Ross
By Glen Williams
It is misleading to call this a collection of short stories(although it is), for the main characters and the setting remain the same throughout. It's like looking through a window and watching the changing cast opening up their deepest emotions and laying them bare in an intensely intimate setting. The situations portrayed are as gut-wrenching as they are inspirational, told with a storyteller's flair for engaging the reader.

Although this compelling collection of interwoven short stories is fiction, it is imbued with the in-depth knowledge of the author's years as a hospital chaplain and legal counsel for a major medical center, as well as her work in the non-profit world aiding the mentally ill, their families and the homeless.

There is good reason for this work to have won the current national competition for the University of Georgia Press' Flannery O'Connor Award for short fiction and to have been nominated for the National Book Award. I highly recommend the book, both as an engaging read, and as a self-exploration of our own emotional connection to how we experience death and dying of one close to us.

Dealing with death compassionately, through stories.
By Kindle Customer
We are sheltered from death, most of us, and hence unready to face it and cope with it. This book offers the perspective of a hospital chaplain who deals with death one way or another every day. The viewing room is the set-aside, sanitized room where family members are taken to view their dead for the last time. Only the hospital chaplains and the janitorial staff have keys to the viewing room. What do you think takes place there? Gorman offers nine stories, each different but all both challenging and full of beauty. I highly recommend this book to anyone who works in the business of caring for other people, whether religion, healthcare, or just making it through life.

An Inspiring Fictional Account of Real Life Stories of Death
By Alice Bingham Gorman
This book of linked stories has rightfully won the prestigious Flannery O'Connor Short Fiction Award for 2013. It has also been nominated for a National Book Award. I can promise you that you have never read anything like it. The stories, based upon "the viewing room" within a hospital where families of the deceased may gather to pay their last respects, are derived from the author's personal experience as a hospital chaplain. They are searing and poignant, full of wisdom and compassion, rising to literary heights only achieved by a consummate writer. Be prepared. They are sometimes painful, but always rewarding.
