About the Author
John Lane is an professor of English and environmental studies at Wofford College. His books include Waist Deep in Black Water, Chattooga: Descending into the Myth of Deliverance River, and Circling Home and My Paddle to the Sea (all Georgia). He also coedited, with Gerald Thurmond, The Woods Stretched for Miles: New Nature Writing from the South (also Georgia). He has published several volumes of poetry, essays, and a novel, as well as a selection of his online columns, The Best of the Kudzu Telegraph.

Nice combination of fact, opinion, and poetry pertaining to coyotes

This book was not what I expected, but I enjoyed it a lot. The author is a poet and environmentalist who teaches at a small college in South Carolina. Intrigued by the recent presence of coyotes in his neighborhood, he visited wildlife management centers, hunters, ranchers, and other people with various forms of coyote expertise to gather their thoughts. Into these facts and opinions, he weaves poetry and other literature pertaining to the topic. I selected the book because I live in a wooded area in Florida and have recently experienced the presence of coyotes in the area. John Lane makes it clear that we are able to coexist with them if we change our behavior in certain ways. They are not beautiful majestic animals like wolves and panthers, but scrawny scavengers who have some use in our ecosystem if we take steps to protect our pets and small livestock.
