Phinizy Spalding traces the development of Georgia’s oldest medical school from the initial plans of a small group of physicians to the five school complex found in Augusta in the late 1980s. When the Medical Academy of Georgia opened its doors in 1828 to a class of seven students, the total number of degreed physicians in the state was fewer than one hundred. Spalding traces the history of the Academy through its early robust growth in the antebellum years; its slowed progress during the Civil War; its decline and hardships during the early half of the twentieth century; and finally its resurgence and a new era of optimism starting in the 1950s.

The History of the Medical College of Georgia

This is an incredibly well written, thoroughly researched, account of the history of one of the South's finest medical and graduate schools. It's clearly not for everyone, and indeed the audience is very limited: If you didn't graduate from the Medical College of Georgia (MCG) you could probably care less, and never even consider reading this book. For those of us who did and who care about history, it was a fascinating read. The late author shows his intimate knowledge of Georgia history, going way back, and he has used that knowledge, supplemented with much research into historic records, to map the development, the trials, and the tribulations, of what used to be MCG. The writing style is excellent, making the book an easy yet informative read.
(The name of the overarching enterprise has recently changed to Georgia Health Sciences University, and many of us who are alums are not at all too happy. Indeed, if the author were alive today and rewrote the book, the final chapter would summarize the rather offensive and ultimately successful attempt to change the name from something we grads cherished to something many of us loathe.)
Realizing that I'm writing for a very few potential readers, I'll simply close by saying "buy this book" if you're an MCG grad, regardless of whether you were in the MD, PhD, DDS, or other health science programs.
