The author makes a strong argument for viewing terrorism as an essentially contested concept and offers a valuable critique of the existing literature on the subject. Using discursive analysis of congressional testimony on terrorism during the 1980s, Dr. Gold-Biss convincingly demonstrates that this literature is produced by a coherent community of expert scholars and practitioners, who have reified terrorism as well as abstracted the problem of political violence from the actors who produce/use it, and marginalized the context for their actions. About the Author
The Author: Michael Gold-Biss received his Ph.D. in International Relations in 1992 from the American University in Washington, D.C. He currently teaches Political Science at St. Cloud State University. His research focuses on the democratization of state and society, and on challenges to sovereignty and political legitimacy in the Americas. He has published articles and reviews in professional journals and is co-editor of Beyond Praetorianism: The Latin Military in Transition.
