In 1870, Louisa May Alcott and her younger sister Abby May Alcott began a fourteen-month tour of Europe. Louisa had already made her mark as a writer; May was on the verge of a respected art career. Little Women Abroad gathers a generous selection of May’s drawings along with all of the known letters written by the two Alcott sisters during their trip. More than thirty drawings are included, nearly all of them previously unpublished. Of the seventy-one letters collected here, more than three-quarters appear in their entirety for the first time. Daniel Shealy’s supporting materials add detail and context to the people, places, and events referenced in the letters and illustrations.By the time of the Alcott sisters’ sojourn, Louisa’s Little Women was already an international success, and her most recent work, An Old-Fashioned Girl, was selling briskly. Louisa was now a grand literary lioness on tour. She would compose Little Men while in Europe, and her European letters would form the basis of her travel book Shawl Straps. If Louisa’s letters reveal a writer’s eye, then May’s demonstrate an eye for color, detail, and composition. Although May had prior art training in Boston, she came into her own only during her studies with European masters. When at a loss for words, she took her drawing pen in hand.
These letters of two important American artists, one literary, the other visual, tell a vibrant story at the crossroads of European and American history and culture.

Review
These letters add to our knowledge of the Alcotts and demonstrate the artistic eye through which May Alcott saw the treasures of Europe. They also inform us about the composition of Little Men and, as many of Louisa's letters were incorporated into Shawl Straps, allow readers to see her at work both as a letter writer searching for literary topics and as a professional author adapting these descriptions to her published stories. Not only is this the only work of its kind about Louisa May Alcott, it is also a valuable addition to the fields of travel literature and nineteenth-century transatlantic studies.
(Joel Myerson University of South Carolina)No scholar of his generation has added more to our understanding of Louisa May Alcott than Daniel Shealy. In his brilliantly researched Little Women Abroad, he outdoes himself. Casual readers will be delighted to share in the humor and exuberance of two irrepressible sisters as they explore the wonders of western Europe side by side. Academicians will feast upon the rich archive he has placed before their eyes and will greatly benefit from his insightful commentary and meticulous annotations. Little Women Abroad warms the heart as it broadens the mind.
(John Matteson winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Eden's Outcasts: The Story of Louisa May Alcott and Her Father)Little Women Abroad tells an engrossing tale in letters. In the spring of 1870, two sisters escape sleepy Concord―'one of the dullest little towns in Massachusetts,' according to the elder―to lead a vagabond life in Europe for eighteen months―'poking round strange cities,' in the words of the younger. The two women pursue their respective arts, writing and painting, and grow independent, meanwhile witnessing 'two revolutions, an earthquake, an eclipse, and a flood.' Best of all, these intrepid correspondents aren't just any pair of innocents abroad. They are the novelist and witty social observer Louisa May Alcott―by 1870, so famous that she vies with the splendors of England, Italy, and Switzerland for the attention of her fellow travelers―and her youngest sister May, the fledgling artist for whom this European tour would prove pivotal in a career that culminated in a Paris Salon exhibition within the decade. Daniel Shealy's expertly edited volume will leave readers with 'heads full of new and larger ideas, [and] hearts richer in the sympathy that makes the whole world kin,' as Louisa herself wrote of this inspiring sisterly sojourn.
(Megan Marshall author of The Peabody Sisters: Three Women Who Ignited American Romanticism)Little Women Abroad is a major contribution to Alcott studies . . . In providing public access to May Alcott's letters for the first time, the volume gives a voice to a woman artist whose accomplishments are becoming increasingly well appreciated.

Excellent book about two extraordinary women
By YA Librarian
After Louisa May's success with Little Women she was financially secure for life. After so many years of tedious work and mounting family debt she was finally able to afford a leisurely trip to Europe. She, her younger sister May and Alice Barlett traveled together across Europe. The letters collected in this book are written by Louisa and her sister May. The letters are addressed to their parents, a few friends and their older sister Anna.
The ladies wrote home about their adventures, both big and small. These letters give a lot of detail into their daily lives. For instance, while they did go on a few outings it seemed that Louisa spent most days sitting around. She was quite ill at the time and was trying to get better. While I knew Louisa was tall it seems May was as well because she writes about an adventures where her clothes were wet and she was given some dry ones but the skirts were far too short. She also had difficultly sleeping on a bed because it was short (5'6) The girls write loving letters to their mother and both want gossip from home. I never envisioned Louisa taking an interest in such things, so this gave me another glimpse into her life. The girls also also talk about the war with France and its impact on Europe.
What really made me love this book was the letters from May. It gives the reader an interesting look into this young woman's life. We know so little about her, because she is eclipsed by her older sister, Louisa, but she was a fascinating person. After reading Little Women Abroad I wanted to learn more about May. Her sketches are in the book as well which I think was a nice touch and adds to the book.
I contacted Dr. Shealy about May and I asked if he would ever consider writing a book on her life. He said he would and is in the processes, but he does not know how long that will take. I'm glad to hear it, because she sounds like a fascinating woman.
I highly recommend this book to any Alcott fan. It is an interesting look at both sisters as they travel through Europe together.

This book is a gem.

I've always wanted more information about Louisa Alcott's sisters, and was always curious about May's ("Amy's") art. This book has a wealth of her drawings included.
Among the letters from the two sisters abroad are included some from Louisa talking about the death of her brother-in-law John, also something very hard to find.
Quite satisfying. Thank you Daniel Shealy!

Fascinating Letters Home from Two Remarkable Sisters
By H. C. T.
I enjoyed this book enormously for the wonderfully intimate and entertaining letters of Louisa and May, for a rare view of May's highly talented drawings and for Shealy's expert guidance and comments.
The letters are so enjoyable because they were never intended for publication and therefore give delightfully honest, spontaneous - and always entertaining - insights into the sisters' thoughts. Whenever I re-read the first chapter of "Little Women" I always feel as though I am right there in the same room as the March sisters. These letters gave me the same feeling of accompanying these two remarkable Alcott sisters on their travels.
I was thrilled to see so many examples of May's drawings and to see just how talented she was. These illustrations also have a poignancy to them because May died so tragically young and at the height of her personal happiness and when her professional career was in its ascendancy.
Shealy's excellent continuity and relevant notes ensure that the reader enjoys these letters to the full.
Like many LMA enthusiasts I have always wanted to know more about Louisa and her family. This book provides just that for a specific time period in their lives. I very much recommend this highly readable and thoroughly enjoyable book. It is also a book which is very well produced, doing full justice to the sisters and their letters.
