Beautiful history of Athens' built environment

Despite "renewal" efforts in the 1960s and 70s that threatened to destroy Athens' historic fabric forever, this small city in northeast Georgia has it all. It's the seat of the flagship state university. It has a thriving cultural and economic life, four complete seasons, and a location far enough from Atlanta to benefit from its presence but remain free of its problems.
This book describes itself as an illustrated history of Athens and the contiguous Clarke county. What it really is is a history of architecture in Athens. That's not a bad thing, because there is a LOT of beautiful architecture here. What Athens lacks in absolute age (the oldest standing structure in the city dates from 1806) it makes up in grandeur. There are more massive Greek Revival columns per capita in Athens than anywhere else in the country. If "antebellum" is your thing, this book is for you.
You'll learn about lost structures but, more importantly, you will also get to see the magnificent things that remain. The chapters of the book are arranged geographically, and the book mantains a narrative style. It is not a catalog of historic sites. There is a mixture of functional black & white and color photographs, but the photography is not really a feature of the book. The University of Georgia is featured prominently throughout, as is appropriate for an institution central to the city's development.
The book also features many short biographical pieces of people who have left their legacy in Athens.
I would recommend this book to architectural historians, local historians, UGA alums, students, and serious amateur historians.
